    Hello Doggers,

So, I guess the biggest question is about the Finals. They are going to happen. Too many people have worked too hard getting their dogs qualified not to have the Finals. They are going to happen. Last Thursday we had a meeting and decided because of Wyoming being closed and the Canadian Border being closed, the decision was easy, well not easy, but the right choice was to postpone. We decided that we will need about six weeks to get everything prepared, so once these places open back up, we will start moving forward with our Finals. The fairgrounds folks have been contacted and have a couple

options for moving the Finals to different dates. We should be good to go.

The cattle are secured and being worked over as we speak. It will be ready to go. It can be warm in Cheyenne in the summer, July looks to be an average high of 83 and average low of 55 with low humidity. Still better than southeast Kansas where it’s 100 with huge humidity. The Board will try to do what’s best for the members so please contact the board and help keep your thoughts in the loop.

The futurity has also been postponed. I haven’t talked much about what to do because frankly I have no idea. What do you do? It’s going to get hot enough right now that rescheduling this event would be difficult. For those that had dogs getting ready for this I am truly sorry. I know how I would feel. There is talk and a thought that maybe we reschedule for the fall and change the rules to where the dogs can go run at SWCD then come here for a field futurity. Again, please send me your ideas. We truly need ideas.

As I started this newsletter article about two weeks ago it has been a huge struggle for what to write. Let’s face it, if no trialing is going on, no planning for Finals, what else is there to talk about? But as I have delayed this idea some trials are starting to move. High Roller is going to have a trial as well as Todd Jessen and the MSSA guys are starting to have something. Thank goodness. We at Creeper are also going to have one. Let’s run these dogs. Everybody I am sure is ready for that. Please check the websites to see when these trials are and get entered up.

One thing that is worth mentioning here is even though we aren’t trialling, take full advantage of training and maybe get in some clinics with different folks in your area. Even though we aren’t supposed to travel far, it would be great time to get some schooling and improve your skills as a trainer and get those dogs ready for the season coming and Finals. There are many places to find these folks, Facebook, the different associations websites, and even contact the Board. We would be glad to point you to a great clinician in your area to help you.

As always, if you have any questions, suggestions or anything please feel free to contact me. I would be glad to do what I can to improve our Association and most importantly, our dogs.

    Keep them doggies rollin!!!!

    Sonny Mahurin, NCA President

  • NCA BOARD NEWS to showcase. Board decided that 2019 Traveling Trophy winners will bring the awards back to 2020 Finals. If Cheyenne has a place to display the trophies we can leave them there, if not, the trophies will revert to the people who have them currently (won in 2019).

    9. Open 50. Nursery 35. Intermediate 30. Horseback 20. Sonny explain that based on historical entries usually 40 percent of point earners enter the finals., it makes sense to allow up to 35 Nursery.

    10. Can do online entry but will be billed immediately. If handler not in the finals then will be refunded the money. We will adjust the entry to allow for postmark date.

    11. Horse back selection. 1. Horseback Points any class. 2. Next should we select on way received or by class. Open then nursery then intermediate.Horseback points earn priority. Current process will remain in place.

    12. Scoreboard both arenasSonny will research scoreboards for both the field and arena.

    New Business:

    1. 2020 Election Info: According to the bylaws anyone interested in wanting to run for the board needs to let the office know 90 days in advance of the Finals. We also need to list the positions that will be up for consideration. According to my research that would be the South Central position currently held by Steve, the Northeast position currently held by Patty, and an At Large Position currently held by Sonny. I will need the date (March 10? March 11?) for declarations to be in to the office, as well as when we can anticipate ballots being sent out, and a voting deadline.  Sonny will get to Lori Herbel for the newsletter the information about open board positions.

    2. Canadian Regional: Campbell motioned to have a Canadian Regional permanent and sponsored by the NCA. Duane seconded. Motion passed. Duane moved that Barry Breemersch is approved to host the Canadian Regional finals on May 10. Seconded by Lincoln.

    3. South Central Regionals will be held by Sonny Mahurin unless anyone else wants to have it.

    4. Intermediate Rules running dog. Stay on course. No changes at this time.

    Next Meeting, March 19, 2020.

Motion to Adjourn by Campbell. Meeting Adjourned.

ELECTION RESULTSThere were three board positions up for election this spring. Only one person filed for each position, so an election was not necessary.

According to the NCA By-laws, changes to the board will take place on the first day following the conclusion of the National Cattledog Finals. The President, Vice-President, and a Secretary/Treasurer will be elected by the Board members at that first meeting following the conclusion of the Finals. Due to the Finals being postponed, the date for new incoming board members and election of officers will be announced at a later date.

The North East Director position will be retained by Patty Koller of Iowa, the At Large Director position will be retained by Sonny Mahurin of Kansas, and the South Central Director position will be be held by Charles Holt of Oklahoma. Steve Knipmeyer previously held this position. We are grateful for the time Steve has put in for the NCA, and we know we will see still him at the trials!

Charles Holt to represent south central region

    O k l a h o m a r a n c h e r Charles Holt will be the new NCA South Central region director following the 2020 National Cattle F i n a l s . T h e S o u t h Central Region includes Kansas, Ok lahoma, Texas and New Mexico.

Charles is a familiar face at many of the trials in the central part of the US, as well as at the last several Finals.

He is a third generation r a n c h e r l o c a t e d i n Southeast Oklahoma near Scipio. The Holt Ranch operation is primarily commercial Angus and Angus cross cow/calf pairs and yearlings. Dogs are used daily in one aspect or another in the ranching operations and have to work and trial.

“I’ve had dogs off and on for years, but got my first “good” border collie as a pup in 2012,” said Charles. “He ended up being good enough to trial and I competed in my first cattledog trial in February 2015. I was hooked, and haven’t look back since then. The dogs have taken me all over the US and the friendships that I have made through the dogs have been invaluable to me.”

Charles was elected as a director to Central Cattledog Association board in 2016 and he is proud to be a part of CCA. He was elected President in 2017 and still remains in that position.

"The main thing that I would like to accomplish with NCA is to help educate the livestock industry about the value of the working dogs,” explained Charles. "I would like to see more demonstrations, clinics, etc. It is getting so hard to find good ranch help and the dogs help so much with low stress cattle handling. Using a horse and a couple of dogs, I can move about anything on the place and hardly get out of a walk.”

We look forward to welcoming Charles to the Board after this year’s Finals!

Lessons of Life I Learned from my Border Collie˝By Patty Koller ˝

❖ Patience: For the times I am doing things wrong my dog will have tolerance for what I am doing………..patiently waiting in the hopes that I will eventually get it right.

❖ Loyalty: Unconditional loyalty, both to me and to their heritage. If I were the one getting a good kick from a cow I’m not sure I would keep going time after time!

❖ Forgiveness: No matter what happened earlier, there is still unconditional feelings. The forgiveness comes quickly, without delay. It’s up to us to make it last.

❖ Faith: Have faith that my dog knows what to do in their own way.

❖ Warmth of a Greeting: The joy of being greeted by a wagging tail (or in a human, a smile), no matter what kind of day you had or what kind of mood you are in. What an impact you can have on someone with something as simple as an energetic wag of a tail (or warm smile)!

❖ Friendship: The real definition of a true friend, one that is always there for you, always with an open ear, always with a furry shoulder to cry on.

❖ Open mind: Showing me that I don’t always know the ‘right’ way and that centuries of breeding can yield more intelligence than a human brain. It can be rather humbling to realize a four legged ‘creature’ knows more than I do when it comes to handling livestock.

❖ Life: Greet each and every day with a big tail wag (or smile) and with love in your eyes. Life is good. And if today doesn’t end up being so good, then there will be tomorrow.

❖ See the world through puppy eyes: Curious, innocent, playful & joyful, no prejudices, no hate, no knowledge of suffering or pain.

❖ Believe in one’s self: For a 40-50 lb. dog to be able to move tons and tons of cattle is even more amazing than David and Goliath. They’ve gotten kick, rolled and chased but yet they know in their hearts that they can do the job and will do the job. I need to believe in myself as much as they believe in themselves.

❖ Love: Combine all of the above and you get Love. They love me for who I really am. They can’t be fooled by the clothes I wear, the house I live in, the pickup I drive or the friends I have. The material things mean nothing to them when it comes to their love of me. It’s my heart and soul they look at. We all need to be more that way.
