Preface

This handbook identifies the usual blooming, harvesting, and marketing dates as well as principal producingcounties and major varieties for the fruits and tree nuts covered in the National Agricultural StatisticsService’s national program of crop estimates. It updates the information contained in the previous edition ofthis handbook issued December 1975.

The Field Offices of the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service compiled the basic information,prepared the estimates of usual dates, and designated the important areas of production and major varieties fortheir respective States. Growers and horticultural specialists were consulted to verify information published.

Definitions

Average Production – Three-year average production data are included to indicate the relative importance ofoutput in each State.

Acreage – The acreage provided is either the 2004 bearing acres or harvested acres depending on thecommodity.

Area – Producing areas within States are shown when available.

Usual Dates – Blooming, harvesting, and marketing dates refer to ‘usual’ dates covering most seasons andexclude exceptionally early or exceptionally late seasons.

Full Bloom – In most instances, the period of time shown covering full bloom indicates when most of theorchards in the specified area usually come into full bloom. In a few instances, a single daterepresents the average peak date of full bloom for most orchards in that area.

Harvesting Dates – The beginning and ending harvesting dates encompass the period in which most of thefruit is usually picked.

Marketing Dates – Beginning and ending dates for marketing cover the period when the fruit is usually soldby the growers in the specified area. Marketing dates do not represent the period when processedproducts, such as canned or frozen fruits, move onto marketing channels. For storage crops, such asapples, the marketing period includes growers’ sales from storage. For the perishable crops, theremay be virtually no lag between harvesting and marketing.

Most Active Harvesting and Marketing Dates – These dates cover the periods when the bulk of the harvestingand marketing usually comes. They do not include the light harvesting and marketing periods at thebeginning and ending of each season.

Principal Producing Counties – The principal producing counties are listed in order of importance within eacharea as determined by the number of trees of bearing age or bearing acreage published in the 2002Census of Agriculture or more recent data. The actual producing section may cover only part of acounty. All counties listed are not necessarily commercially important. The counties shown havebeen selected according to their relative importance within each State.

Varieties – The varieties listed are the principal ones grown in the State and are listed in alphabetical order.
