Root Cause analysis

Problem

• Automated well, pipe, pump, and

filter system producing data

discrepancies. Tasked to

troubleshoot a complex

automated water treatment system.

Solution

• Used RCA to design testing

procedures to be used in any

current and future gauge, pump

controller, and connection analysis.

• Discovered and corrected a meter

which had been programed

incorrectly.

Accomplishments

• Gained extensive experience with: • Implemented Design

• Transducers

• Valves

• Pumps

• Piping

• Wells

• Filters

• Meters

• Gauges

• Ladder Logic Programing

• CAD Drawings • Product Spec Sheets.

• Completed all work in an

independent, timely, and efficient

manner. Produced detailed design

reports including methods, analysis,

and results. 3

“EZ TRAC”

Fender Tire Chain

system

Project Goal

• The proposal was for the design

and construction of a semi-automatic or fully-automatic truck

and trailer chain installation and

removal device.

Design Outcomes

• Fully functional prototype

• Chaining process time decreased

by 80%.

• First Place at BYU-I Research and

Creative Works Conference for

junior mechanical engineering

product design.

Personal Contribution

• Presented initial proposal.

• Assigned to Lead the team.

• Lead concept generation and

selection with the use of HOQ,

Pugh chart, FMEA, Selection

Matrix.

• Assisted in 3D CAD design

creation and iteration using

Autodesk Inventor and Solid

Works to achieve fit and finish.

• Preformed all Iterative ANSYS

Finite Element Analysis for stress

and deformation requirements.

• Worked with team members to

fabricate, install, and test

chaining system. • Created Project reports to

update progress.

“SWAT Bot”

Mechatronic Tactical

Reconnaissance Robot

Project Goal

• Rexburg, Idaho SWAT team

requested a durable remote

controlled camera to view the

interior of a house before entering.

Design Outcomes

• Fully functional prototype allowing the device to easily drive wirelessly

and feed a live video back to the

driver.

• Third Place at BYU-I Research and

Creative Works Conference for Senior mechatronic product

design.

Personal Contribution

• Worked with team members

concept generation and

selection.

• Preformed all 3D CAD design and

iteration using Solid Works to

assure adequate space for

components.

• Assisted in writing Arduino programing and constructing

circuits.

• Fabricated, constructed, and

tested SWAT Bot frame.

• Created project video for

presentation.

“Bone Crusher”

Kinematic Can and Bottle

Recycling Compactor

Project Goal

• Assigned to build a five bar linkage to preform and every day task.

Design Outcomes

• Fully functional prototype allowing

a small child to crush a can with

over 70 PSI of force .

Personal Contribution

• Worked with team members to

brainstorm concept selection.

• Assisted in 3D CAD design using

SolidWorks, and preformed a

motion study to predict velocity and acceleration.

• Used CAD drawings to fabricate,

construct, and test Bone Crusher

with the help of my own four

small children.

• Presented device to a class of peers.

Jack Tester

Project Goal

• To design and construct an frame that could be built and used based

on CAD drawings alone.

• Jack tester required to hold up

under load in high and low

positions.

Design Outcomes

• Easy to build frame with minimal

machining operations

• Device maintained integrity under

excessive load.

Personal Contribution

• Worked with a team in concept

generation and selection .

• Assisted in 3D CAD design using

Solid Works to create DXF file for

plasma cutter. • Preformed Finite Element Analysis

for stress and deformation

requirements using Autodesk

Inventor.

Miniature Cannon

Frame

Project Goal

• To design and mill twenty cannon

frames that could be milled on a

CNC Machine. • Frame required to fit in a final

assembly.

Design Outcomes and

Personal Contributions

• Modeled frame set in SolidWorks and imported to Master CAM to

program and obtain G code file for

mill.

• Assembled frame with parts for

twenty complete cannons.

Hagen Potato

Sizer/Sorter

Design Optimization

Project Goal

• Optimize the production volume of

the Hagen Potato Sorter at Wada

Farms in Blackfoot, Idaho.

Design Outcomes

• Root Cause Analysis resulting in

many test design iterations.

• Solution increasing production

efficiency and resulting in an increase of approximately $3.5

million annually.

• Completed project on time and

significantly under budget.

• Second Place at BYU-I Research

and Creative Works Conference for senior mechanical engineering

project design.

Personal Contribution

• Voted team leader.

• Worked with team members to preform a functional

decomposition of a complex

optical sorter.

• Worked through a Root Cause

Analysis.

• Assisted in 3D CAD creation using

Solid Works to demonstrate the

system organization.

• Worked with team members to

plan, perform, analyze each test.

• Created Project reports to explain RCA process and progress.

• Created project video to

demonstrate process and solution.
