Leonard SlatkinMusic Advisor
“Mozart’s Requiem is one of the most haunting pieces in the classical repertoire. Mozart eerily knew he was perhaps writing this for himself, so he poured his soul into this incredible work. And like many of you, I became acquainted with it through the unforgettable movie Amadeus!”
u “I am greatly looking forward to my appearances
next season with the Nashville Symphony.
Of particular interest is the pleasure of working
with my good friend and colleague Emanuel Ax. We
were students together in New York and always try to bring the excitement of
new discoveries when doing works from the standard
repertoire.”

a note from our conductors
welcome to the2008/09 Season
The most amazing music from your favorite composers, performed by the world’s top soloists…
That’s what awaits you when you take your seat for the Nashville Symphony’s landmark 2008/09 SunTrust Classical Series. Yo-Yo Ma, Sir James Galway and other sought-after headliners join the
orchestra for the biggest and best the classical repertoire offers. That means Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and his beloved Violin Concerto; Mozart’s Requiem; Dvorák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New
World;” Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1; and the monumental Symphony No. 6 of Gustav Mahler. Special events include First Tennessee’s all-Gershwin Gala Celebration; Itzhak Perlman for a Valentine’s Special; and the San Francisco Symphony conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. Join us for our third year inside Schermerhorn Symphony Center and its acoustical jewel, Laura Turner Concert Hall. Our
home continues to revolutionize the classical concert experience, and we’re expecting you!

October 25, 2008HAPPY HALLOWEENNashville SymphonyKelly Corcoran, conductor
Come join us as sorcerers, skeletons, goblins, ghouls and ghosts invade Schermerhorn Symphony Center! The “horrifying” music of Camille Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre, Franz Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz and familiar tunes from recent movies are among the treats awaiting you.
December 20, 2008A SPIRIT FOR THE HOLIDAYSNashville SymphonyKelly Corcoran, conductorMagic Circle Mime Company
Three mischievous holiday spirits have their own ideas of what a holiday concert should be. As two of the spirits squabble, the orchestra is caught in the middle. To the rescue comes the spirit of “Music,” leading the audience in an unusual holiday sing-along that breaks the Grinch-like “curse of noise.”
February 21, 2009STOP THE MUSIC!Nashville SymphonyKelly Corcoran, conductorDan Kamin, guest artist
A policeman threatens to arrest the orchestra, because they’re making too much noise! Can conductor Kelly Corcoran convince him that they have the right not to remain silent? This exciting new show features the return of world-renowned comedian Dan Kamin, who taught comedy moves to both Johnny Depp and Robert Downey, Jr.
April 18, 2009KIDS ROCK!Nashville SymphonyKelly Corcoran, conductor
“Kids Rock!” presents the amazing and moving musical accomplishments of children and youth. Music has long attracted talented kids from ancient history to the present. Hear the music of Mozart and Mendelssohn that they wrote when they were children, and delight to the music of contemporary composers.
Pied Piper Series Fun as well as educational, the Pied Piper performances offer an engaging and enlightening experience for music lovers of all ages. All concerts take place at 11 a.m. in Schermerhorn Symphony Center’s Laura Turner Concert Hall. Pre-concert activities begin at 10 a.m.
