Beach, Boating, and Water

Does visiting an island make you love the water, or does a love for water make you visit an island? Don’t worry about the answer – just get your gear and dive into the wonderful waters of and around Nanaimo.

Islands and IslandsNewcastle Island is a popular spot for locals and visitors, and one of the many islands just off the coast of Nanaimo. Kayak or cruise to Protection Island, one of the smallest of the Gulf Islands, where the locals use golf carts to get around. Look for Brother XII’s hidden gold, thought to have been hidden on De Courcy Island in the 1920s. Enjoy the scenery off the shores of Mudge Island, where the night sky is clear enough that you can almost touch the stars. Explore the Malaspina Galleries of Gabriola Island for an entirely different perspective of these sandstone giants shaped by the ocean, one grain at a time.

Board LifeBalance your board as you navigate the waters of Departure Bay, watching the ferries come and go. Easy breezes are perfect for windsurfing and kiteboarding, and the gentle waves bring a little something special to your stand up paddleboard session.

Kayaks and CanoesGo out for a rip to enjoy the sea breeze and warm sun, or pack for an island excursion to explore the not-so-distant shores. Jump in and enjoy; bring your own kayak or canoe – or rent from a local vendor – and launch from an excellent assortment of accessible spots.

Chart Your Course• Visit AhoyBC.com for boating information about

Choosing the right image of Nanaimo’s Harbour is a challenge when you have so many great options. As a favoured boating destination, a growing cruise destination, a harbour of many festivals or one of Canada’s most beautiful harbours – it’s an incredible burden to live with! Why not visit and see why people keep coming back. To choose YOUR favourite image, visit:

Nanaimo Port Authority

Marine LifeSnake Island, a few minutes past Newcastle Island, is home to 250 harbour seals who bask, frolic, eat, and live on the rocky shores. Capable swimmers can snorkel with the seals as they investigate you and play in the forests of kelp.

Freshwater AdventuresDive into the lakes of Nanaimo to enjoy the clean, clear, and crisp freshwater. If you’re brave enough, you can do it any day of the year. Long Lake, Brannen Lake, Cathers Lake, and more all offer excellent water for swimming and fishing.Westwood Lake is a popular swimming hole with a sandy beach, accessible change rooms, swim dock, excellent parking, and warm water. There’s an easy-hiking trail around the lake, with a sprawling off-leash dog area, and for seasoned trail runners and bikers, there are advanced tracks to explore and enjoy. The Nanaimo River is a popular spot where the locals spend sunny summer days, basking on the rocks and cooling off in the deep, clean pools. Watch for spawning salmon and wandering crayfish, living their life on the riverbed, or bring your rod and reel to test your luck against the fierce steelhead salmon.

Catch a WhopperThe Gulf Islands protect the waters of Nanaimo from the elements, and combined with the mild climate, excellent fishing can be found just about every day of the year. Local marinas offer accessible moorage with full services so you can stay and play on your own vessel, or charter a boat and go after the winter chinook, lingcod, flounder, and sole. Remember to drop a trap for prawns and Dungeness Crab. Be sure to apply for a fishing license and check regulations.

Dive DeepWith an abundance of dive locations just off the shores of Nanaimo, including sheer walls, pinnacles, and Dodd Narrows – rated the second-best dive site in BC – you’ll be planning your next trip to Nanaimo before your gear has dried. Find large colonies of Cloud Sponges and Plumose Anemones, and spawning Rockfish, Lingcod, Spiny Pink Scallops, and the Giant Pacific Octopus. Three sunken ships – the former HMCS Saskatchewan, HMCS Cape Breton, and the Rivtow Lion, a 150-foot deep sea tugboat – provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore diver-prepared reefs and rediscover your love of the dive.

Ride the train in the BC Forest Discovery Centre in Duncan, then make your way downtown to find over 40 totem poles, including the world’s widest. On the southern tip of the Island, Victoria offers excellent shopping, gorgeous gardens, and an outstanding selection of world-class restaurants. At only 90 minutes apart, you can spend the day in Victoria and still have time for supper and a stroll in Nanaimo.

The seaside communities of Ucluelet and Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island are just a few hours away from Nanaimo, and offer excellent surfing, salmon fishing, and bear watching opportunities. Drive out to catch the first set of the day or a lightning show from Mother Nature, and on your way back to Nanaimo, stop to see the goats on the roof in Coombs, then explore the world under the massive tree canopies of Cathedral Grove on the Alberni Highway.

20 Min Nanaimo Seaplane TourExplore the beauty of the nearby islands and incredible coastline by air! Soar over Historical Nanaimo, Snake Island, Pipers Lagoon, New Castle Island and Gabriola Island’s lime stone bluffs.

Sunshine Coast Air

Unit #7 - 90 Front St, Nanaimowww.sunshinecoastair.com877.461.5749 | 250.591.1810

Time estimate based on major routes. Scenic routes available for slightly longer driving time.

Island HoppingJump on the ferry, leaving from Nanaimo Harbour almost hourly, to visit Gabriola Island and explore the Malaspina Galleries: sandstone cliffs carved by time and the ocean. Walk under and around the intricate designs, or rent a kayak and get a better view of this natural beauty. While you’re here, visit the museum to learn about the community’s history, or play a round at the Gabriola Golf and Country Club.Drive to Chemainus to enjoy the impressive outdoor murals in this ‘little town that did’, then find the BC Ferry dock for Thetis Island, one of the Gulf Islands that has much to offer but is a closely guarded secret for many Islanders. Hike, sail, or bike your way around the island, enjoying the breathtaking scenery or watching the marine birds and sea creatures bask in the warm climate.

Follow the Artisan TrailIn Cedar and Yellow Point, just a few minutes south of Nanaimo, there’s a trove of talent waiting to show you their farms and fields, studios and shops. Chat with the artists to learn what inspires them, then watch as they create artistic masterpieces. Visit the farms to meet the growers and learn how the local terroir produces delicious honey, fruits, and vegetables, then break bread at one of the many B&Bs or local restaurants. Bring home fragrant local soaps, comfy quilts, one-of-a-kind pottery creations, as well as fresh herbs, honey, and a bouquet of beautiful flowers that brighten your room and your stay.

Nanaimo BarTreat YourselfThe Nanaimo Bar has captured the world’s attention because of its delicious blend of butter, cream, semi-sweet chocolate, coconut, and almonds, layered to deliver a perfect balance of sweetness and richness. It’s hard to say exactly who first started this tasty treat: fun debates argue that it came from the early Dutch settlers or the creative hearts and minds of the region’s coal miner’s wives, when the growing community was called Colville. This world-renowned treat has been a delicious part of Nanaimo ever since its first printing in the 1952 Women’s Auxiliary to Nanaimo Hospital Recipe Book.

Take the Nanaimo Bar Trail to find a delicious assortment of creative interpretations of this local favourite, and enjoy your next Nanaimo Bar in a martini; a latte; deep fried; as a fudge; vegan; organic; in a shooter; as a cupcake; in your ice cream – mixed in or made that way, and so many more options. What’s your favourite?

There’s no wrong time for a Nanaimo Bar
