2018 ACCC BOARD MEMBERS


Fellow ACCC Members,

Another month in the books and the year is half gone. I still miss

seeing a lot of our members at our events; Six months into 2018

and some members I haven’t seen since the Christmas party. You

just missed a good cruise to Miche Tavern in Charlottesville, led

by Skip and Marie. The trip to the local winery afterwards was a

nice cruise through the local farmland and vineyards, three times,

but we finally made it for a refreshing glass of wine. One of our

members nearly ran out of gas on the way. Suggestion—get your

gas before the cruise, as you never know.

Next week is the Fourth of July. Some of our members are par-

ticipating in the parade at Aquia Harbour, have a great time and I

know you will represent us well. Many of us are out of town so be

safe on the crowded roads. Later on this month we will be cruising

to Luray Caverns (see the VP’s events article, page 5) for break-

fast, the caverns, lunch, and the auto museum. Skip should be

good at attempting to navigate the maze located at the caverns.

Club members appear to be healthy once again and that is good.

Pete was out to the June meeting and it was good to see him back

in action after his fracture. I understand he has a bike for sale.

He also has a surprise Corvette presentation (see flier on page 12)

for us at the next meeting, so it would be good to see some more

members at the meeting. There may be cookies for the presenta-

tion.

By the time you receive this newsletter, many of our members will

have celebrated Corvette’s 65th Birthday at a cruise-in with BCC in

Fredericksburg on June 30th. You should have gotten a couple of

emails on this, so maybe we celebrated together. It was fore-

casted to be a hot day so the celebration should have been a suc-

cess. Details will follow.

letter, and in future newsletters to follow.

June 19, 2018, ACCC Business Meeting Minutes ACCC June 2018 Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 7:34PM by President Al McCloud. There were no guests or new members.

John Horvath and Mike Truelove motioned to accept the May Minutes as written. The motion carried.

Vice President. Bud Donnor went through the Club’s calendar of events. Events include our monthly break-

fast, which will be at Juke Box Diner in Manassas on 7 July at 9AM; the big Corvette cruise-in in Manassas

is on Aug 11 and we will meet at the Golden Corral for breakfast at 9AM, then caravan over to Sudley Plaza.

NCM Ambassador. Bud Donnor discussed a series of events coming up at the Museum. Please check the Mu-

seum web page for more information.

Treasury. Al reported that the Treasury is in good standing.

Membership. Al reported that we had 49 members.

Newsletter. Pete Rutledge said the newsletter will be out on time, as usual.

Sunshine. Nan Wehmeyer reported no news, which is good news!

Old Business. Al McCloud reported on Carlisle. The club will have a tent as we did last year. Some members

will be staying at the Hilton; We have four members signed up for the National Night Out at the Stafford

Market Place on 610 on 7 August. Lee Morton requested spots for 7 Corvettes and we will know more as the

date approaches; Al will have more information on the National Caravan in August; the Club picnic will be at

Leesylvania State Park at Pavilion 1 on 9 Sept at 11AM.

New Business. Al brought up the Hickory Bridge Farm cruise. Members suggested Nov 4th as a possible

date; Hershey Corvette Racing Weekend is on 9th and 10th of November; contact John Horvath for infor-

mation. Al received 3 volunteers for the 4th of July parade at Aquia Harbor; Mike Truelove has an assembly

instruction manual available for free if anyone is interested; Pete Rutledge offered to give a 20 minute

PowerPoint presentation for the July meeting; Pete also suggested that the Club attend NASCAR Night at

Dominion Raceway in Thornburg on July 14th. Look for more info in this newsletter.

Al McCloud read the June Birthdays and anniversaries.

Steve Argubright won the 50/50 and donated his winnings to the treasury ($34 was handed off to Al

McCloud for the Treasury).

John Horvath motioned to adjourn, seconded by Mike Truelove. The motion passed. The meeting adjourned

at 8:10PM.

AQUIA CREEK CORVETTE CLUB

The purpose of this organization shall be to provide educational needs for those with Corvettes, and

for the preservation, restoration, and enjoyment of all Corvettes.

Aquia Creek Corvette Club (ACCC) was formed in September 1987 by a group of die-hard Corvette

enthusiasts from Aquia Harbor in Stafford, VA. The name was selected reflecting the Club's geo-

graphic and historical origins in the Old Dominion. Through hard work and commitment, ACCC has en-

joyed constant growth and now boasts 54 members representing nearly 70 Corvettes, from a 1953 to

2018. ACCC membership consists primarily of Stafford County residents, but has members from

Prince William, Fairfax, Fauquier, Spotsylvania, Orange, Culpeper, Loudon, Louisa counties, and two in

Florida. Since September 8th, 2014, the ACCC Facebook Group has been limited to ACCC members

only, except for a few that were already group members.

Only 13 months to go to the Caravan! There

is a lot of work to do before this big event –

participants must register, our Club must plan

the drive from our area to the kick-off in

Concord, NC, and we need to solicit donations

for the Route Book, which will be printed well

before next August. I was at Richmond Race-

way last week (for a dog show) and took the

opportunity to meet with their manager of

marketing, who was very interested in putting

an ad in our Route Book. You can help us find

sponsors, too. Check out and make copies of

the Order Form (page 18 in this newsletter) –

any kind of business is welcome, except Chev-

rolet dealers; Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet is our

exclusive dealer and main sponsor. (Ads are

NCM AMBASSADOR NEWS – JULY 2018

Time flies – It’s been five years since I took the position of ACCC Ambassador. It has been interest-

ing – the Museum staff are great folks and the Ambassador program gets better every year. I cele-

brated (?) my 80th birthday recently and I’m hoping that one of you will step up and volunteer to be our

next Ambassador when election time comes around later this year. If you’re interested, or at least

curious about the position, go to the Museum website (corvettemuseum.org) and click ”support,” then

”corvette clubs/ambassadors.”

Thinking about a new C7? A recent Ambassador Newsletter gave details on the options available from

the NCM delivery department:

Museum Delivery ($990) new car orientation, membership and tour of the museum, comemora-

tive wall plaque and gold decal. Delivery shown on museum webcams. Touring laps in Museum’s Corvette

if track is available.

Build Your Own Engine ($5,000) – assemble your Z06 or ZR-1 engine with a technician at the

Hello ACCC,

This is the first in a hopefully long line of columns about Corvette racing activities. Our es-

teemed President Al McCloud asked if I would write a column of what Corvette was up to in the

world of racing. I foolishly accepted. I say foolishly because the most important June racing

event the 24 Hours of Lemans has come and gone. Our beloved Corvettes did not do well, with

a best finish of fifth in class and twenty-first overall. Thanks to Velocity channel I was able

watch the entire 24 hours. No, I did not sit in front of my TV but it was nice to flip to the

channel from time to time and see what was happening.

As I write this column the Corvette racing team is running the IMSA six-hour race at Watkins

Glen, NY. This is a great race at a world class road circuit. I will be reporting on this race in

next month’s Acccelerator.

Senator Robert F. Kennedy is shot in California after celebrating presidential primary victories.

1968 marked a dramatic, long-awaited evolution in Corvette design; the end product of experiment-

ing, improving, testing, and tweaking that marked the first 15 years of Corvette's development.

Legend has it that Bill Mitchell, GM's styling chief, went deep-sea fishing in the Bahamas in 1960

and, upon landing a shark, dreamed up the concept of a new body shape for the company's sports

car. Over the ensuing years, that dream bore fruit in the experimental "Shark" series that culmi-

nated in the Larry Shinoda-designed Mako Shark II test show car unveiled at the New York Inter-

national Auto Show and the General Motors Pavilion at the World's Fair in 1965.

Unofficially dubbed the "Shark," the 1968 Corvette embodied modern, clean, aerodynamic lines

complementing its powerful small- and big-block engines.

Gone were the boat-tail rear deck styling, humped fenders, and sleek hood of the Sting Ray genera-

tion. In their place was a long pointed nose, bulges over the wheels, a slimmed-down waist or midsec-

tion, and a somewhat concave, notchback rear deck treatment. Coupes featured flying buttress pan-

els flanking an upright, removable flat rear window, and removable two-panel T-roofs. Four louvers

or "gills" were added to the fenders behind the front wheel well to help reduce underhood air pres-

sure.

Overall, the 1968's were seven inches longer and two inches lower in height giving them a bold,

sleek, lusty appearance.

Other innovations included the use of high-tech fiber optics to monitor the functioning of front and

rear lighting, vacuum-operated hidden headlights that popped into position, rather than rotated as

in previous versions; side vent windows were eliminated; windshield wipers were hidden under a vac-

uum-operated panel, and the battery was moved to a compartment behind the seats for better

weight distribution. A three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission replaced the two-speed Power-

glide and aluminum heads were offered as an option on the 427ci displacement engine. In one speed

test, a 427-equipped coupe notched 0-60 in 5.7 seconds and a quarter mile in 14.1 seconds.

Despite initial trade media criticism, the public embraced the 1968 and new sales records were set.

Over 9,900 coupes and 18,600 convertibles were produced, better than 5,600 over the preceding

year. Sticker prices for the basic car increased nominally.
