HAPPY 50th ANNIVERSARY GEORGE & EMELINE THOPPIL

ST. PATRICK’S DINNER Mark your calendars! Our annual St. Patrick’s Dinner will be held on Saturday, March 2nd. A Corned Beef Dinner, Irish Dancers and Irish Pipers add up to a fun evening.

ST. PATRICK’S SEMINARY COLLECTION Today’s Second Collection is for St. Patrick’s Seminary. For over a century, St. Patrick’s Seminary and University in Menlo Park has been preparing men for the priesthood. At a time when the Church needs well prepared priests more than ever, we are blessed with a record enrollment of 112 men. This blessing however, comes with challenges as we contin-ue to provide them with outstanding teachers and academic facili-ties and plan for growth in residential space. We hope that you will help us achieve our goals by con-tributing to the second collection that the Archdiocese of San Francisco has designated especially for St. Patrick’s. We would like to invite you to visit our historic grounds, chapel, campus and library to see firsthand our faith and ministry in action. If you would like to arrange a tour, or have questions about the second collection or our other programs, please contact Lauren John at (650) 321-5655 or e-mail her at lauren.john @stpsu.org Thank you for your generous support. May God Bless you.

HOLY NAME SCHOOL

Dear Holy Name Families, Thank you to Mrs. Jamie Lo (Ryan Fong 8A) and Mrs. Atsuko Saito (Justin 8A) for gathering Blankets for the Home-less on Friday, January 18th. It was a last minute appeal requesting blankets for the homeless people in San Francisco. Thank you to those parents who donated blankets and to Mrs. Lo for bringing them to the headquarters for this drive. We will have Open School on Wednesday, January 30th, from 8:30 o 10:30 a.m. Please feel free to visit the school with friends or neighbors. You can sit in the classrooms and watch teachers and students in action or meander through the school. Additionally, we will have our annual Science Fair on Thursday, January 31st from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. You will be im-pressed with our individual and class science projects, which stu-dents have been working on for many weeks. Scientists from Genentech will judge the projects earlier in the week. Everyone is invited to our Science Fair which will be held in the gym. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos

FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora

I would like to give a warm wel-come to our Holy Name School stu-dents and parents, faculty and staff as we open up Catholic Schools Week this Sunday at the 9:30AM mass. This annual celebration is

scheduled for January 27 to February 2, 2013, with this year’s theme “Catholic School Raise the Standards.”

I sounded like I was complaining when I said at the mass last Sunday that every time the 49ers have a game I am always celebrating the mass. Or vice versa, when I celebrate mass, the 49ers are playing. I celebrated the 5PM Saturday anticipated Mass, the 49ers also had their playoff game at the same time. Then I celebrated the Sunday 11:30AM mass, the 49ers had their Division championship game at 12:00 noon. At both times, they won. I should be happy that each time I celebrate mass the 49ers end up as victors. What time is the Super Bowl next week? Or is it the Super-Baugh or Har-bowl? The fight between the two Harbaugh brothers, Jim and John, coaching opposite teams. The father of the two Har-baugh’s must be so proud as to say, “These are my be-loved sons in whom I am well pleased.” We started this year with The Rose Bowl and Orange Bowl. There were other football matches that came after that, the Sugar Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl. Now comes next week, the big one, the Super Bowl. If I have to celebrate a mass at the same time, it’s okay, be-cause I know what the outcome will be. After all those football Bowls, and as we observe the Lenten season which is just in few weeks time, we will have Operation Rice Bowl. Sponsored by the Catho-lic Service Relief (CRS) this helps us enrich our Lenten journey and live in solidarity with the poor and vulnera-ble around the world as we pray, fast and give alms. More information about this will be available later. It was such a beautiful day on Martin Luther King Day. But it was even more beautiful to visit with two of our long time parishioners who have contributed a lot of their time volunteering. First, I went to see Mani Glanz who is a pillar of our Homebound Ministry. After I gave her the Sacrament of the Anointing, she exclaimed: “Now, I’m ready” to which I responded, “You have been ready all this time.” Then I went to see Lee Kennedy, who is the pillar of our Senior Club. Lee seems to be en-joying her new lovely domicile.

The Second Va can Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospec ve By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back

“Catholics believe that the Church cannot perish….in virtue of the guaranteed assistance of God. [But] the ques on could have been asked, in the years before Va can II, whether the fate of the coelacanth was not likely to be the fate of the Cath-olic Church.” Bishop Christopher Butler, in his book The Theol-ogy of Va can II DLT 1967-82; pp.6-9

Ques on: Who is the author of holiness? Answer from Lumen Gen um: The Lord Jesus, the divine Teacher and Model of all perfec on, preached holiness of life to each and every one of His disciples of every condi on. He Himself stands as the author and consumator of this holiness of life: "Be you therefore perfect, even as your heavenly Fa-ther is perfect.” Indeed He sent the Holy Spirit upon all men that He might move them inwardly to love God with their whole heart and their whole soul, with all their minds and all their strength and that they might love each other as Christ loves them.

Ques on: How are Chris ans made holy? Answer from Lumen Gen um: The followers of Christ are called by God, not because of their works, but according to His own purpose and grace. They are jus fied in the Lord Jesus, because in the bap sm of faith they truly become sons of God and sharers in the divine nature. In this way they are really made holy.

Editor’s Note: The quote at beginning references the very rare coelacanth fish. The coelacanth was a fish that had been thought to have been ex nct for 65 million years only to have been pulled up in a fisherman’s net in 1938. It is s ll exceed-ingly rare and cri cally endangered—living in extremely small popula ons off the eastern coast of Africa. In other words, it never died out, but it doesn’t exactly thrive either.

In the Gospel of Ma hew (16:18) Jesus says “And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”

Jesus doesn’t say that Church will always exist and thrive with great numbers—he just guarantees the Church will always be here and that the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. Bishop Butler seems to be saying that without the guidance of the Holy Spirit working through the Church and its councils, our Church, as established by Jesus, risks its visibility, rele-vance, and purpose 2,000 years later.

We o en find ourselves drawn to dig deeper into our Catholic faith. You are encouraged to explore more at: h p://www.va can.va/archive/ At the Va can’s website, you’ll find a wealth of free and complete Catholic resources including the Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Code of Canon law and the en rety of the Second Va can Council.

January 27, 2013 THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (C) Neh 8:2–4a, 5–6, 8–10 1 Cor 12:12–30 or 12:12–14, 27 Lk 1:1–4; 4:14–21

What if today’s Gospel scene played out in your church this weekend? A man—someone you’ve never seen lector—steps to the ambo and reads from the Old Testament. He’s a com-pelling speaker—you feel like you’ve never heard this passage before, even though it’s certainly been read hundreds of

mes. He seems to give it new voice. And then, a er finishing the proclama on, the man declares that he is the fulfillment of what was just read. The reading he proclaimed was about him.

It’s Jesus, right in front of you—but would you recognize him? Would you have heard that reading anew, or were you thinking about where to go for Sunday brunch, or wondering how long the priest’s homily would be, or worrying about the coming work week? Would you have missed Jesus present in the proclama on of the Word?

Today’s first reading from Nehemiah describes a similarly rapt audience—engaged and focused as they listen to the proclama on of God’s Word. They praise and thank God for the powerful words that leave many of them in tears. Does this scene resemble our weekly gatherings and our experience of God’s Word? I’m not so sure.

It’s far too easy to take the Word of God for granted. We’ve grown up with the Scriptures, we hear them every week at Mass—we might even have a Bible somewhere. But do we truly make God’s Word a meaningful part of our lives?

How a en ve are we to the proclama on at Mass? Do we take me during the week to read a passage or two on our own? Jesus is the Word of God made flesh—and he tells us today that he came to bring glad dings, freedom, and Good News.

Are we listening?
