Research shows early education in a child’s life
is the most critical opportunity for learning.
The early childhood curriculum at Early
Learner’s Academy is designed to focus on the
social, physical and educational development
of young children.
The Academy uses the curricular model
DLM Early Childhood Express as a
comprehensive, research-based program
following state and national early-childhood
guidelines. The program links language and
early literacy, math, science, social studies, fi ne
arts, health and safety, personal and physical
development, and technology. Materials
include lessons plans with 36 engaging
and relevant weekly themes complete with
activities that help children make connections,
expand on experiences, and build new
knowledge on a variety of topics.
Instructors also use the Everyday Math
curricular model to help teach one-to-one
correspondence, shape recognition, patterning,
counting, size relationships, sorting and
numeral recognition.
Students’ growth and learning is assessed
three times per academic year. Instructors
use the early childhood literacy assessment,
IGDI (Individual Growth and Development
Indicators) to track skill assessment in
Bloomington Public Schools is a statewide leader in early childhood education.
rhyming, letter recognition, picture naming
and alliteration. These results are used
by educators to assess the program’s
effectiveness.
Each classroom maintains a teacher-student
ratio of 1:10. No more than 20 students are
admitted into each classroom.
Enrichment ActivitiesThe curriculum also provides enrichment
activities designed to be fun, hands-on and
educational. Some of these activities include:
• Music, art, science and technology
• Spanish and sign language
• Access to media center and gymnasium
• Special events and classroom speakers
• Field trips
Elementary School Benef itsEarly Learners Academy provides families
with a unique opportunity to become
familiarized with Bloomington Public Schools.
Families will have the opportunity to meet
school principals, become involved in parent
activities and explore the elementary school
environment. During Early Learners Academy
students use the media center with the latest
technological tools for 21st Century learning,
a full gymnasium and outdoor playground.
Students also have access to a full-time
health associate.
Focus on Kindergarten Readiness
Research shows early education in a child’s life is the most critical opportunity for learning.
Highly Qualified Staff
Each year, Early Learners Academy (ELA)
conducts a survey to gauge parent satisfaction
with the program and to make improvements
based on families’ suggestions.
Parents have reported that the four most
important factors in selecting ELA was:
• Focus on kindergarten readiness skills
• Qualifi cation of teachers
• Curriculum offered
• Hours of operation
10 out of 10 parents say they would
recommend the program to others and 85%
of parents rate ELA’s quality as higher than
other childcare centers in the area.
Take a look at what parents are saying
about ELA:
“My husband and I were extremely pleased
with all the opportunities that ELA presented
for our child, and especially with the quality
of teachers that ran the program. ELA is a
great program.”
“I had two in Westwood ELA last year. One
moved to Kindergarten and the transition was
so much better than I expected. A lot of it was
due to the fact that she has six others in her
class that were part of Westwood ELA and she
knew the school and the Kinder teachers.”
“I tell everyone about the ELA program and
what a perfect situation it was for us. My kids
love school and I can only hope that continues
for a long time.”
“I work in the district as a licensed elementary
teacher. I did look at other programs; however,
I was so impressed with what Bloomington had
to offer. I now tell parents I know about ELA!”
“Though being located in a school was not
an important factor for our choice, it worked
out well, and I think it is a positive placement.
Being in a school allows for use of the gym (a
very helpful aspect in the winter) and to the
activities of other students (school rallies, etc.)
and to having older children visit the room to
read and interact.”
“We absolutely loved it and our child benefi ted
greatly from the experience.”
