LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGH711,NORTH, ORMOND SHARE LEAD -,MEET IJALR~POOR KICKING COSTLY TO BLUES, " ~

By GEORGE McTAGGART

After three rounds, North Old Boys and Ormond are the only unbeatenteams in A Section, and they meet at Ormond today to decide outright leader-ship.

North were not altogether convincing in a hard game against De LaSalle last week, although they finished well to win by 20 points, but shock-ing kicking for goal might well have cost "De La" the game - they had fivemore scoring shots than North . '

University Blues also suffered from inaccuracy in front of goal, especiallyin the second half, and they went down to the Blacks by three points .

North looked the better side ingeneral play but often broke downin attack, wasting the good work ofplayers further afield, while De LaSalle, who also failed to capitaliseon the numerous chances they had,at least usually managed to scorepoints.

De La Salle led by 10 points atthree-quarter-time, and North had theuse of wind in the last quarter. Northlevelled the scores, but then "DeLa" in a desperate bid for victory, tore forward in an inspired burst togoal and regain the lead .

They were playing the better foot-ball at this stage and looked as ifthey might take the game, but thenNorth swung into action and went onto win well . North added 6 goals inthe last term .

The Blues led the Blacks by 20points at the interval, but kicked 3-13in the second half, including 1-7 inthe last quarter, to kick themselvesout of it, and the Blacks scrapedhome.

Caulfield Grammar opened up a leadof nearly 8 goals over Marcellin inthe first quarter and still led by 13-

points at half-time. Marcellin kickedtwo valuable goals against the windin the third term to trail by 26 pointsat the final change.

Marcellin added 5-7 to a point inthe last quarter and finished 10 pointsin front .

Old Trinity were no match for Orm-ond and St . Bernard's completelyoverwhelmed Coburg.

Old Melburnians kicked 18-9 (117points) against Old Scotch, but werebeaten by 10 goals, Geelong beat St.Kilda CBC by 9 points, and Ivanhoescored their first win when they beatMonash Blues by 16 points . It wasMonash's first defeat .

Old Xaverians continued on theirwinning way with an 8-goal victoryover Fawkner, Old Ivanhoe crushedKew and AJAX had only 14 pointsto spare over Old Carey.

Alphington scored a big win overOld Camberwell to retain top place .They are up there alone now, as OldGeelong went down to Assumption by16 points in a high-scoring game.Power House surprised St . Kevin'swith a 19-point win and State Bankbeat an inaccurate Elsternwick by 10points .

Old Mentonians toppled AMP Soc-iety and West Brunswick crushedHeatherton . Commonwealth Bank'saccuracy (15-5) gave them a 4-pointwin over St . Bede's (12-19) .

In the Juniors, University Blacksshocked the Blues, winning by morethan 6 goals and Monash Universitytossed the leaders, North Old Boys,by 29 points . Reservoir caused an up-set in Section 2, beating the previous-ly undefeated Caulfield Grammar by9 points in a great game (23-10 to20-19) . It was Reservoir's first win .Fancy kicking 139 points and beingbeaten !

There were some upsets in the Res-erves - De La Salle beat North,Old Melburnians beat Old Scotch,Hampton Rovers beat Melbourne High,Fawkner beat Old Xav's (all by bigmargins), Assumption beat Old Gee-long, State Bank beat Elsternwick,West Brunswick beat Heatherton bya goal, A .M .P. beat Old Mentoniansby a similar margin, and St . Bede'strounced Commonwealth Bank .

PREVIEWING~4Y'S GAMES

A SECTIO NLast week we had a MATCH OF THE

D xY at Elsternwick Park - Well doneNOEL RUNDLE - today we have another .

University Blacks a nd Caulfield Grammar-ians - The Blacks surprised me last weeknd Caulfield let me down . It's a harde to pick but Blacks experience on the

-, ;de Elsternwick oval could give them thepoints .

Evergreen Uni . Blues rover Barry Churchstill picking up plenty of kicks and

bough Coburg's Paul O'B rien will pressim the result of today's clash should not

be greatly affected . Coburg are re-buildingnd it will be a slow process - the 'Bluesould win well .North Old Boys cannot be faulted . I

expected De La Salle to make a closer., .me of it last week. Ormond will undoubt-e :11y worry them at Ormond but not suf-

i I lenity to hamper their progress .St. Bernard's at home will be too strong

for Old Trinity who are struggling. I ex-1,• :t St. Bernard's to further boost per-centage particularly with sights firmly seton second place.

The remaining game is a poser . Neitherillarcellin nor De La Salle can boast aboutheir accuracy - an aggregate between them

! :,st week of 21 goals from 63 scoring shotsis wasteful. Marcellin managed to fallin but De La kicked themselves down theci r : iin .

De La Salle is the better of the twosides and will win but must not take theunspectacular Marcellin lightly .

SELECTIONS : University Blacks, Univer-sity Blues, North Old Boys, St. Bernard's,De La Salle - JIM FIDGE .

B SECTIONOld Melburnians are fi nding wins hard

n come by in the higher grade, eventn ough they turned in a great effort for

t i i ree quarters last week against Old Scotch .with 8 goals, Dave Urquhart showed thatyou are never too old to be effective. I'mt ecting that he can do it again and helphis team to break the ice against MonashBlues .

Last round losers, St. Kilda CBC andCollegians meet down at North Rd. and~hould turn on an even contest. Both team sre leaning heavily on stars Kevin Whitend Chris Roach respectively . The homeide appeals as more experienced and I

must support them, without any great con-viction .

Geelong look very likely to trouble allsides. Wins are a great tonic and, led bythe talented Ian Davis from the pivot, I fore-see them proving too much for the incon-sistent Old Haileyburians .

There is no doubt that Old Paradians andOld Scotch will turn on the match of theday . It is to be hoped that the huge fol-lowing who cheered the Cardinals on tovictory last Saturday, do not desert them .

Scotch full forward Sherwen, looks like achampion of the future and if he firesagain, could well tip the scales againstParadians .

Red has always been my favourite col-our and I'll stay with Laurie Aghan'sCardinal boys.

I must hasten to correct a blunder inthe first issue of The Amateur Footballerwherein I stated that Bill McWhinnie, Ivan-hoe's perenial star had hung up his b^ots .My eagle eye noticed the famous namA inbest players recently and I don't thin'- hehas a young brother . Good on you Bill .

Picking a winner between 'Hoe and Reser-voir is no sinecure . Both play the gamefor keeps and an even tussle is certain .Everyone knows a draw is unlikely so I'mgoing for Reservoir on the grounds ofexperience and more avenues to goal .

SELECTIONS : Old Melburnians . St. KildaCBOC, Geelong. Old Scotch, Reservoir O .B .- ALF. KEAM.

C SECTIO NThe "Crystal Ball" came good again last

week with a 5-win prediction, howeverthe odds are now shortening with teams inthe top four playing each other .

Parkside versus Fawkner looks the matchof the day and Parkside have a big chanceto further enhance their position with an"away" win .

Fawkner are good at home but stillhaven't hit 'top gear - I'm going forParkside to take out the big one.

Top side Old Xaverians will find Kewat home "No lay-down misere" .

Xav's are playing well and even on thesmall ground should pull up in front.

AJAX and Hampton Rovers - both onequal points will give either side a chancefor a break through. It's a toss up jobwith AJAX winning the toss .Old Carey weren't too far behind AJAX

and are desperate to crack the jack-pot .U .H .S .O .B . - not all that strong are hardto beat at home and I'll go for them .

M.H .S .O .B . and Old Ivanhoe will be agenuine battle. After breaking the ice lastweek, Old I's will be looking for another4 points.

The "Old Boys" are already in the "hotseat" and will be out to score . I wouldlike to see them open their account but itwon't be today - O. I's to sneak in .

My Selections : Old Xaverlans, AJAX,U .H.S .O .B ., Old Ivanhoe, Parkside - ALEXJOHNSON.

PREVIEWThe A .B .C. Sporting Session from 3IA

each Friday (which commences at 6 .34 p .m .),will Include a preview of the followingdays amateur matches .

D SECTIONLast year when Syd Whitfield tipped one

winner in "E" Section all thd ather tip-sters were ve ry polite and did not makemention of his tipping ability but I guessa few wondered how on ea rth he madehis selections .

Well, last week I hit rock bottom withmy "no wins" which followed a bad runthe week before. I now know how Sydmust have felt, particularly as I don't use apin to make selections . This week can onlybe better.

Even though Power House broke the icelast week, Old Brighton at home will betoo strong and will take the points .

Old Camberwell really let me down lastweek and I cannot see them winning againsta more rugged Elsternwick even though theyhave the homeground advantage.

Alphington at home certainly producea strong combination and on that note I tipthem to come home ahead of Old Geelongwho weren't very impressive last week .

State Bank will win against a lack lustreLa Trobe Blacks.

St. Kevin's are finding it hard puttingtwo wins together and on last week's show-ing Assumption should have the edge.

SELECTIONS : Old Brighton, Elste rnwick,Alphington, State Iyank, Assumption -KEITH FINDLAY.

E SECTIONWest Brunswick journey out to Old Men-

tonians and should pick up the points un-less (a) they get lost on the way, or (b)start looking for mushrooms .

National Bank versus Brunswick has themakings of a match . I fancy NationalBank.

Beverley Hills and AMP Society is an-other clash where the issue could be indoubt till late in the game . I'll go forthe old fallacy of home ground advantage, and select Beverley Hills.

Heatherton and North Brunswick will beanother solid test for Heatherton and I'mafraid they will have to lower their coloursagain .

Never mind, there is another team fromthe same area where the prospect looksmore hopeful .

The other problem of ANZ Bank and thebye should be safe providing Keith Findlaycan be kept out of it .

SELECTIONS : West Brunswick, NationalBank, Beverley Hills, North Brunswick -SYD WHITFIELD .

F SECTIONMy comments last Saturday were sub-

stantiated by the results . "F" Sectionalready shanes as one with three groupsof teams.

Hopefully my nattern for the Section willreceive more strength today .

Commonwealth Bank added four pointsto its assets last week and 'today backon the spacious Harry Trott Oval the Bank-ers should score again . University Redshave disappointed in April and on perform-

Page 6

ance the Bankers must finish with a creditbalance on the scoreboard .

Thornbury and Footscray I .T. should pro-vide an interesting and tough spectacle .Although Footscray has recorded easy vic, tories I will forecast a Thornbury victoryon the grounds of strength of play andgreater knowledge of the winds across theJohn Cain Reserve.

No one could accurately forecast theoutcome of the Monash Whites-Glenroygame . Success has been minimal for eachside in April . Because I am in a decisionmaking situation Monash are my selection .

The disappointing St. Bede's make thelong journey north to Bundoora where LaTrobe Reds await them. The big La Trobeground will provide a different bounce tothat experienced in Mentone. I will giveSt . Bede's another chance by selectingthem .

In what could be a grand final preview, the boys from Bulleen clash today . A bigcrowd should assemble in Bulleen Villagetoday for the game.

The visitors, Bulleen-Templestowe seemthe big improvers . Already they have scor-ed more wins than in 1975 and half their1976 total . Their forward line has beenquite active - more so than that of theirUnited opponents. The United backlinehas had the more pressure so far althoughthat of the combine has not been fully test-ed . Even allowing for this unknown factorI believe Bulleen Templestowe will win, remain undefeated and head F Section afterRound 4.

SELECTIONS : Commonwealth Bank,Thornbury, Monash Whites, St . Bede's,Bulleen-Templestowe - NORM NUGENT .

JUNIOR SECTION I

The inexperienced Coburg boys are hav-ing difficulty in becoming a settled com-bination and today Monash University willgive them no respite, Monash's aerialstrength and general team work will en-able them to win this match by a bigmargin .

University Blues will have a real battleon their hands to overcome Ormond whoare very confident after last week's gooddisplay against St . Bernard's . I think thevaluable experience gained from that matchwill hold Ormond in good stead and enablethem to win .

St . Bernard's at home will defeat OldScotch by a comfortable margin but onlyif they keep their minds on the game anddo not underestimate the promising OldScotch boys .

North Old Boys will also have benefitedfrom last week's encounter with MonashUniversity but not to the extent requiredto defeat the powerful Ivanhoe side . Thiswill be a real gripping game with both teamseager to gain an early season win andpsychological advantage over the other.

SELECTIONS : Monash University, Ormond,St . Bernard's, Ivanhoe - CLIFF BASTOW .

THE A MATEUR FOOTBALLER -M,ay 7, 1977

JUNIOR SECTION 2Last week saw Caulfield removed from

the undefeated list, going down to Reser-voir, who onened their account by 9 points, although they had 6 more scoring shots .O,P.'s also notched their first win . Con-gratulations again to Alex Johnson on an-oiher 100% success .

In the match of the day, Caulfield Gram-marians meet Hampton Rovers . AlthoughCaulfield may have considered themselvesunlucky last week, they should rememberbad kicking is bad football . Hampton, with Cole and James kicking accurately upforward and the Caulfield players flounder-ing on the big Hampton ground, should

in a hard and close game. The battle for the wooden spoon takes

>>1_,ce at Alphington, where Kew are still;,,ing to win their first game. After a for-

last week, spirit in "Tonner" landmust be very low and I am going for Kew

in this week.Reservoir Old Boys are definitely my

jinx team. Although they are at home-An this week they will find De La Salle

too strong.Undefeated Geelong make the trip to West

Brunswick. After missing out on a gamelast week, they will be ready to "eat a foot-brll" and should have a good win .

The hardest game to make a selection in isOld Paradians at home to M.H .S .O.B . Para-diars have been unimpressive to date, whilst

1VI .H .q . 'nave been patchy, but have enoughin hand to defeat the home side.

SELECTIONS : Hampton Rovers, Kew,Ge , '-g, M.H.S .O .B ., De La Salle - PETERNATHAN .

NOMINATIONS FOR STATETEAMS

The information shown under thisheading last week was not quite cor-rect. Clubs in A and B Sections are tonominate up to four players (in orderof ability), not necessarily followers .C•and D. Section's Clubs may nomin-ate two players and E, F and JuniorSection Clubs may nominate oneplayer .° Nominations close on Monday nextwith Mr. Don McQueen, 12 LandenAvenue, Glen Waverley 3150.

DOUBLE CENTURY TO COMM . BANKERTerry 'Lengthy' Dick plays his 200th1or game today for Commonwealth Bank ,

high high marking, dash and long kickingha :e been a feature in 17 years of football%: idi the Bank . In addition to this he hasii<o played in excess of 50 games with Res-,c :ve and Junior grades kicking well over1(1,-; goals . Everybody at the Bank wishe sLengthy" all the best for this season and

many more to come.

UMPIRE'S CORNERAs mentioned in last week's issue we are

breaking away from the mere Rules andInterpretations of the Game and explana-(ion of various interpretations, and bringyou an interesting article on how fit theumpires must be and how this fitness isachieved .

Aussie Rules' football is one sport wherethe adjudicator, in this case the field um-pire, must attain a high standard of phy-sical and mental fitness .

It can be said - that in actual fact theumpire must reach a standard of physicalfi'ness superior to that of the contestants .

When you consider snorts such as cricket, soccer, tennis, baseball and hockey to men-tion but a few one may be correct in say-ing that this umpire being superior infitness to the Wavers is unique to "AussieRules" .A referee in boxing, tennis or soccer

certainly does not achieve a standard of fit-ness superior to the contestants . This uni-queness is certainly something to ponderover.

UMPIRES AT TRAININGEvery Tuesday and Thursday evening since

the beginning of March the field umpireshave undergone a planned sequence ofphysical training which will equip them forthe season ahead .

A typical Tuesday nights training in Marchwould consist of :1 . 5 laps clockwise of the oval (jogging) last

one done at brisk pace .2. Series of selected exercises designed

especially to develop speed, stamina, strength, mobility and power.

3 . 10 "run throughs" down the groundgradually lengthening stride - jog backto start - continuous i .e . no rest.

4 . 10 "down the ground" incorporating fouror five 10-metre sprints, jog back tostart alternating forward and backwardrunning, continuous (no rest) .

5. Three laps Indian File - last on filesprints up to front alternating inside andoutside of file - last hundred metresall out sprint.

6. In pairs - 4 laps of the oval - ; lapjog, I_ strong sprint, front pair drop offthe rear, repeat with new leaders .

7 . One jogging lap followed by one hardlap of oval .

8 . Replace track suit and practice ballbouncing .

This is then followed by a warm showerand perhaps a short discussion or "hintsseeking" by the umpires with the Umpire'sCoach .

During the course of a game many prob-lems arise for the umpire, upon which hemust make an instant decision . Sometimesan explanation or chat with the advisorcan help an umpire in future matches.

100 UP TO R .O .B . PLAYERCongratulations to big Allan Dunn on

playing his long awaited ton with Reser-voir Old Boys . Al, one of the most colour-ful members of the club, is also a versatileplayer. Reputed to be the best "tap" ruck-man in the club (by A1) he has also playedon the back and forward lines. Al'sstrength is his main attribute, however heis a fine left foot kick and has left manyopponents floundering with his cleverturns . Looking forward to your 150th Al .Well done .

Caulfield Grammarians last Saturday wel-comed back into the senior team their lead-ing goalkicker for the past several seasons,John Butcher, who underwent a leg cpera-t ion late last year . John soon made hispresence felt, booted 4 goals and appearsset to give opposing full backs plenty offood for 2hou 2ht as the season advances .Coach of the Reserves team, member of theclub's executive committee, member of theV .A .F .A . Executive Committee, he still findsa little time to devote to the legal profes-sion, whilst wife Kelly also sees him oc-casionally.
