Today'slithiumionbatteriesarecriticallylimitedbylowenergydensity.Traditionalbatteriesrelyonagraphite-basedanodetostoreelectrode,whichcyclesstablybuthasalowcapacitycomparedwithotheranodematerials.Onesuchmaterialtoaddresslowcapacityissilicon,whichhasatheoreticalspecificcapacity(4200mAh/g)morethantentimesgreaterthangraphite(372mAh/g).However,continualelectrochemicaldegradationonsiliconandelectrodevolumechangesduringcyclingpreventssuccessfulimplementationinlithiumionbatteries.Thisworkseekstoimprovetheviabilityofthinfilmsiliconanodesbycovalentlygraftingpoly(diethyleneglycolmethylethermethacrylate)(DEGMA)brushesdirectlyonsiliconelectrodesviasurface-initiatedatomtransferradicalpolymerization.Thispolymerfilmisintendedtoactasanartificialsolid-electrolyteinterfaciallayer,whichispartiallylithiumionconductiveandcanpassivatethesiliconsurfacedespitelargevolumechanges.ThegrowthrateofDEGMAbrushesbyATRPonsiliconwasdeterminedtobe20nm/hratroomtemperature.Lithiuminfiltrationofthispolymerlayerwasperformedinanaqueoussolutionoflithiumbis(trifluoromethane-sulfonyl)imide(LiTFSI)toincreaseavailabilityoflithiumions.Initialhalf-cellcyclingofsiliconindicatescapacityretentionfromthefirsttosecondcycleimprovesfrom76.2%withnotreatmentto82.4%withtreatmentof80nmpolymer.Inaddition,lithiuminfiltrationwasdemonstratedtoincreasepolymerconductivityfrom6.66⨉10-8S/cmto3.32⨉10-6S/cmat22ºC,a50Ximprovement.Thisworkwillguidefuturedevelopmentofsurface-tetheredpolymericartificialsolidelectrolyteinterfacesforsafe,high-capacitylithiumionbatteryelectrodes.

Backpainistheleadingcauseofdisabilitygloballyandthesecondmostcommoncauseofdoctors'visit.Despiteextensiveresearchefforts,theunderlyingmechanismofbackpainhasnotbeenfullyelucidated.Theintervertebraldisc(IVD)isaviscoelastictissuethatprovidesflexibilitytothespinalcolumnandactsasashockabsorberinthespine.WhenviscoelasticmaterialsliketheIVDarecyclicallyloaded,theydissipateenergyasheat.Thus,diurnal,regularmovementsofthevertebralcolumnthatdeformtheIVDcouldincreasedisctemperaturethroughviscoelasticheating.Thistemperaturerisehasthepotentialtoinfluencecellfunction,drivecelldeathandinducenociceptionininnervatingnociceptiveneuronswithintheIVD.ThepresentstudywasconductedtoinvestigatethecapacityofIVDtoincreaseintemperatureduetoviscoelasticheating.InsulatedcaudalbovineIVDweresubjectedtophysiologicalcyclicuniaxialcompressionoverarangeoffrequencies(0.1-15Hz)andloadingdurations(1-10minutes)exvivo,andthetemperatureriseinthetissuewasrecorded.Accordingtoourfindings,theIVDcanexperienceatemperatureriseofupto2.5°Cundercyclicloading.Furthermore,undersimilarconditions,theinnernucleuspulposus(NP)exhibitsmoreviscoelasticheatingthantheouterannulusfibrosis(AF),likelyduetoitsmoreviscouscomposition.ThemeasuredtemperatureriseofthedischasphysiologicalrelevanceasdegenerativeIVDtissuehasbeenshowntoproduceasensitizationofnociceptiveneuronsthatspontaneouslyfireat37°C,withaT50responseat37.3°Candamaximumresponseat38°C.OurresultssuggestthatviscoelasticheatingofIVDcouldinteractwithsensitizednociceptiveneuronsinthedegenerativeIVDtoplayaroleinbackpain.

Recentadvancesincancertreatmentshaveincreasedthechildhoodcancersurvivalrate,creatingurgencyforstrategieswhichaddressfertilitypreservationinprepubertalmalesundergoinggonadotoxictreatmentssuchaschemotherapy.Cryopreservationofimmaturetesticulartissuecanbeapotentialoption,fromwhichspermatogonialstemscells(SSC)canbeisolatedandpropagatedinvitro.UsingSSCs,alongwithLeydig,Sertoli,andperitubularcellsofadult(mature)humantesticle,wedevelopeda3-dimensional(3D)testisorganoidculturesystem.Thisstudyoptimizesthe3Dtestisorganoidculturesystemandassessitsfeasibilityforprepubertal(immature)humantestisorganoids.Weshowedthatorganoidsmaintainedtheirstructure,viability,metabolicactivityandproducedtestosteroneover3weeksofculture.Furthermore,weconfirmedthepresenceofspermatogonia,Leydig,Sertoliandperitubularcellsthroughout3weeksofculture.Up-regulationofspecificpost-meioticgermcellmarker(PRM1)confirmedtheformationofspermatid-likecellsinthissystem.

Chondriticmeteoritesprovidesnap-shotsoftheprimordialsolarnebulaandthroughgeochemicalanalysis,theycanbeusedtosheduniqueinsightsonearlysolarsystemprocesses.Thetrace-elementconcentrationsofFeNimetals,suchaskamacite,taenite,andtroilite,areparticularlyusefulandstandardquantitativetoolstodeterminetheregioninwhichameteoriteoriginatedin.Accordingly,wehaveanalyzedFeNimetalsintheNovosibirskchondriticmeteorite;auniquemeteoritefromNovosibirsk,Russiathatwaswitnessedasitfellinthemid-1970s.Alaserablation-inductivelycoupledplasma-massspectrometer(LA-ICP-MS)analyzedvariouselements(e.g.V,Cr,Fe,Co,Ni,Cu,Ga,Ge,As,Mo,Sb,Ag,Al,andZn)intheFeNimetals.OurgoalwastocollecttheelementalconcentrationsofvariousmetallicgrainsinNovosibirskandcomparethemtootherwell-knowncelestialbodiesinordertodeterminewheretheNovosibirskmeteoritewascreatedwithinthesolarsystem.Afterwhich,wecomparedthetrace-elementcontentofourmeteoritewithothertypesofmeteorites,suchasCV,CR,andCH,amongothers,toseeifitoriginatedfromarecordedparentbody.UpondeterminationofNovosibirsk'sorigins,apetrographicanalysisofmetamorphicandshocktextureswasusedtointerpretextremeeventsthismeteoritemayhaveexperienced.Metamorphicandshocktextureswithinmeteoritegrainsarestrongpiecesofevidenceinexplainingregionalizedeventswithinthesolarsystem.ThisanalysisofNovosibirskopensthedoorforfutureworkaimedatfindingtherelativeorabsoluteageofthemeteoriteanditsuniquetextures.

Humansreadilycombinelogicalconceptstohelpusconstructargumentsandmakedecisions.Wefrequentlymakeinferencesbasedonpremiseswealreadyknow,whichisformallytermedasdeductivereasoning.Thisflexibleabilitytocombinelogicalthoughtsisoftenseenasexclusivelyhumanandlanguage-dependent.However,arecentbodyofworkdoneonanimalcognitionhasprovidedevidencethatsomenon-humananimalsarecapableofreasoningthroughsimplelogicalconstructssuchastheequivalencerelation,aswellasmakinglogicalinferencebasedongivenpiecesofinformation.Onewell-studiedlogicalinferenceinanimalsisthedisjunctivesyllogism,whichreferstothestatement"AorB,notA,thereforeB."Thislogicalinferencerequiresnotonlytheunderstandingofnegation,butalsotheabilitytoupdateone'sbeliefaboutBbasedonwhatisknownaboutA.Inatraditionaltwo-cuptask,whenatreatishiddeninoneoftwocupsandonecupisshowntobeempty,manyanimalswillsearchforthetreatintheothercup,whichseemstobeconsistentwiththedisjunctivesyllogism.However,successfulperformanceinthistaskcanreflectnon-deductivestrategiessuchasavoidanceoftheemptylocationinsteadoftruereasoningthroughthedisjunctivesyllogism.Inthisstudy,weemployedanewfour-cupdesigntohelpusteasetruereasoningapartfromnon-deductivestrategies.Weintroducedtwodistinctivebaitingsets,eachcontainingtwocups,whereonerewardwashiddenineachbaitingset.Wealsogavesubjectstwochancestomakeachoiceandprovidedinformationontheirfirstchoice.Therefore,wecouldeffectivelyexaminewhethersubjectsflexiblyintegratedthepieceofinformationtheyreceivedandupdatedtheirbeliefontherewardlocation.Wefoundthatolivebaboons(Papioanubis)arecapableofmakinglogicalresponsesusingdisjunctivesyllogism.Thissuggeststhatnon-humanprimatesmayhavetheabilitytoflexiblycombineabstractthoughts,evenintheabsenceoflanguage.Furthermore,ourlogicalabilitiesmayhavedeeperevolutionaryrootsthanwhatwepreviouslythought.

Thenumbersofstarspotsandtherotationperiodsofstarsarecloselyrelatedwiththemagneticfieldsofstars;therefore,arelationshipshouldexistbetweenthestarspotcoverageandrotationperiodofstars.Additionally,theageofastarisproportionaltothesquareofitsrotationperiod,sowecanrelatethestarspotcoverageinsteadtotheageofthestarortherotationperiodsquared.Wecreate100starbinsbasedonstellarmassforapreviouslyexistingdatasetof3203Keplerstarsandfitthisrelationshipwithasimplepowerlawoftheformaspt=Atβineachbinaswellasforthewholedataset.ThesefunctionsallowustoconstrainthestarspotcoverageasafunctionofageofMain-Sequencestarswhichhasstrongimplicationsfordifferenttheoriesinstellarastrophysics.Theseimplicationsincludetherelationshipbetweenspotcoverageandthecoronalactivityofstars,constrainingparametersinmodelsofstellarevolution,andtheapparentsaturationofrotationperiodsofstarsolderthanthesun(theyappeartohaverotationperiodslargerthanthesquarerootoftheiragewouldsuggest).Inthefutureweplantoinvestigateothermeansofbinningthesestarssuchasstellarmetallicity,aswellastofurtherstudythetheoreticalimplicationsofourresults.

Socialbondingisaconceptcreatedbyfosteringasenseofsocialconnectednesswithinagroupsetting.Accordingtopastresearch,participatinginlivesinginginterventionscausesanacceleratedprocessofsocialbondingtooccuramongagroup(Pearce,Launay,MacCarronandDunbar,2016),andspecificallyfosterspsychologicalandsocialbenefitsfortheelderly(Sarkamoetal.,2014).However,therehasbeenlittleresearchconductedexaminingthebenefitsoflivesingingwithgeriatricpatientswithadditionalpsychiatricdiagnosesinarecreationaltherapysetting.ThecurrentstudyisbeingconductedattheRochesterPsychiatricCenter,examiningsocialbondingwithgeriatricpatients.Onegroupwillparticipateinalivesingalonginterventionleadbyarecreationaltherapist,andanothergroupwillparticipateinarecreationalteatimegroupforaneight-weekperiod.Wewillbemeasuringself-perceptionofgroupinclusionandalsofactorsofQualityofLife,includingmood,energylevel,memory,andinterpersonalrelationships.Atherapyaidewillalsobeinterviewed,askingfortheirperceptionofdifferentdomainsofbehaviorpertainingtothepatientsparticipatingintheintervention.LaurenOey,'18"ConceptsarelikeRulesbutGradient:PreservingGradienceinaLogicalModelofMentalRepresentation"
