Gratularer med dagen!

Good News! Our recent request for a new custodian has been filled! Member, Harlan Hagen who has served the lodge for many years at different position, including President of the Trollheim Building Corporation, accepted the position last month. His duties are outlined in a contract signed between the President and Mr. Harlan and was approved by the board at the meeting June 6. Harlan is seen around the lodge on weekends and during the week doing a variety of jobs for the building, the yard, and generally making Trollheim shine for our visitors. He also heads our Adopt-a-Street program. He is indispensable to this lodge. We are happy to have him serve Trollheim in this capacity! Thank you, Harlan!

From the President

Sometimes I feel like I am just running around on a grinding stone…never getting anywhere. On July 21st, I must have slipped off that spinning stone and I landed in a rehabilitation center with complications due to my arthritic knees. I’m now completing this newsletter away from my trusty desktop computer. This may be a” less than perfect newsletter,” but I will try my best between daily physical therapy sessions to get this done by early August. The next week or two, I will learn some tips and self-help exercises to make management of my pain, my medications and scheduling of my medical checkups better so I can be a better president for Trollheim. I expect that I will return to full duties very soon.

I have gone from totally unable to walk to now able to move about on my own in 9 days. But this idea of not getting anywhere on this grindstone has been rephrased this week by my therapists, who remind me, “Take it easy; baby steps are good.” It didn’t seem like progress until I looked back at those “baby steps” taken the past week and realize the progress I made.

For many at the lodge, Trollheim Lodge may seem stuck on a grindstone, doing things the same way over and over with no progress being made. But, when looking at what has happened the last 7 months at the lodge, we have made some mighty fine “baby steps” and 1 giant step with the addition of the sign advertising for rentals. I look at the schedules for the lodge events, classes, meetings, and cooperative events and the several rentals, and it has been a busy, but good 7 months! We all should be proud of the progress we have made! It just takes patience with those baby steps.

Trollheim has much more to come in the next 5 months. August 21, we have our general meeting with a BBQ. Louise Bath, our Cultural Director has some informative programs planned for Sept-Dec general meetings. September 16th is our Walleye Fish Fry. November 3rd and 4th, the Christmas Craft Fair will be held, and Dec 16 will be our Trollheim Family July Party. Please plan to bring the family and kids or grandchildren!

August General Meeting August 21, 2017; 7 pm

BBQ Hamburgers and Hot Dogs

Trollheim will supply the meat and buns: we ask that you supply the sides and salads! We also have ice cream and sherbet from our June social. So bring some coke or sprite and we can have floats or dishes of ice cream. Let’s have a party to end our summer break!

Of course, we need to discuss a bit of business so there will be a formal meeting. After the meeting, we will also view a new DVD that is provided by a member, “Richard Bangs' Adventures with Purpose Norway: Quest for the Viking Spirit.” By this time the Viking exhibition will have vanished from Denver Museum of Nature and Science, but we can always spend another hour experiencing a new video of travel and the spirit of our ancestors! Plan to come and enjoy good food and a good movie!

Tusen Takk from the President! Many thanks to Megan Ingebrigtsen, Linda Ault and Michael Homan who stepped in to handle the RENTAL on July 29th, when this President was in rehab. It is good to know that the wedding ceremony, reception and dance that was scheduled went well in their capable hands! Thanks to Bev Moe, Ray and Michael Homan, Donna Robinson, Barb Bessesen, Barb Hessel and Marcus and Quinn Johnshoy who volunteered to do all the jobs that it took to put together the concert on July 2nd. Your efforts were appreciated.

By Bev King

Uffda! Bev King has had quite a time of it this year. We wish you best of health, Bev. Trollheim misses the both you and Bob at our lodge events and meetings. President Elaine Homan had an unpleasant Uffda on July 21st with her left knee. She is doing well in a rehab facility and plans to be at the August Board and General meetings. With both the Sunshine lady and the President/Editor laid up for a bit, we can’t report much. Please let either Bev King or Elaine Homan know if anyone is sick, has a new grandchild, taking a trip or other item to print in this column. Thanks. From Our Financial Counselor Mike Johaneson Many of our members are buying life insurance these days to have the chronic illness rider. It will give you 2% of the face value each month if you are in need of long-term care. In other words, you could get $6000 per month if you have a $300,000 policy. But there are many other reasons to invest in life insurance:

Final Expenses—Not something you want to leave to your family Eliminate Debt—Auto, credit card or college loans Pay Off Mortgage Emergency Fund Home Care Fund Income Replacement Pay Estate Taxes Provide Business Continuation Retirement Income

Life Insurance can be the solution to many problems. If I can show you how, please call, text or email me. mjohaneson @gmail.com 720-971-0130

Vera’s 100th Birthday Celebration at the May General Meeting

Thank you to everyone who helped celebrate my 100th birthday at the last MAY general meeting. A very special thank you to Elaine who furnished the huge, beautiful and elaborately decorated cake....it was delicious. Due to the small attendance there was enough for everyone to take some home. I really appreciated your singing and all your good wishes.

Tusen Takk...Vera Thorne

Editor note: What a beautiful lady!

Tubfrim Contributions Diane Molter

I just mailed out a four-pound box of Tubfrim stamps and after checking at the lodge yesterday, I will need to mail out another.

Donations were from Herman Waugh, Harlan Hagan, Ron and Vera Thorne, Connie Bartram, Sid Haugem and Bernice Molter J

So far in 2017 Trollheim has sent out 16 pounds of collected stamps for Tubfrim to recycle and sell for TB Mitigation and Research,

Thanks all! It’s great to have the names of the contributors on or in the bags!

Butikken News A reminder…the Norske Butikken is open on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. throughout the summer. A sale item that we missed in the June news is the remaining stock of Sonja pattern flatware, now at a 25% discount. Some pieces could be a gift item even if the recipient does not have a whole set of Sonja. In order to make room for the new fall items, we are running a special for the month of August. All Spring and Summer Ekelund linens such as runners; towels in the different sizes (some of these would make excellent wall hangings); and dishcloths are marked down 20%. Most are made of organic materials. We will continue with the sale items listed in the June newsletter (check to see if there are further reductions.) Butikken Management Team; Joan, Carolyn and Alice

President Elaine Homan is going to give up skateboarding with a walker! But she’s never going to give up! See ya’ soon!

In Memory of Bernice E. Swenson

November 24, 1928—May 19, 2017

Bernice entered into rest on May 19th at the age of 88 years. Bernice is survived by her four children Sharon, Laurel, Ron, and Carol and a sister Mildred Nussbaum. Bernice was born and raised in Garretson, SD just northeast of Sioux Falls. Her grandfather came from Trondheim area and settled in a predominantly Norwegian community in southeast South Dakota. Her Swedish grandmother was a young girl when her family settled in the same area.

After high school Bernice completed commercial college, worked for the phone company was married and moved to Denver in 1964. After her children were in school, she began a career with the Federal Service. She was with the Drug Enforcement Administration for five years and then unto the Internal Revenue Service where she retired after twenty years. For many years Bernice was active in Christians in Crisis. She enjoyed reading, quilting and ragtime music. A very giving mother with a heart full of love for her family. She was a member of Trollheim for twenty years, but not a member at the present time.

Services were held at Redeemer Temple on Saturday, June 3rd, 2017 at 10:00 AM. 3701 W. 64th Ave. Arvada, CO.

God Bless you Bernice. Her obit has a 37-photo gallery available on line – photos # 22,23,28,29,36,37 are of her when she visited Norway with one of Trollheim’s Tour to Norway.

T I D L Ø S (Timeless)

We had an opportunity to book this band for a concert July 2 and what a performance it was! The 5-man band from Norway, arrived from Norway early Saturday and were guests of the President and her family for supper. Their first concert was Sunday in Boulder.

Later they arrived at Trollheim for practice and those of us who were volunteering for setup and cookie duty had an opportunity to listen to the warm-ups and chat with the band members. At precisely 7 pm, the President made the introductions, the lights were turned down the sound system turned on and for the next hour and 15 minutes, the audience was entertained with beautiful music in Norwegian, and some English lyrics. Vern and Cynthia Skari sat in the front row and were invited to sing the English version. They have wonderful voices.

It was a wonderful concert. But don’t take my word for it. Read the comments on the next page from other attendees! T I D L Ø S may return next summer. We will invite them back so plan to see the concert in 2018! (Below, L to R: Tommy; Bjorn; Johan; Jan Martin; Sound Town employee Mike; and Martin. This picture was taken to show their sound tech in Norway that they “found” his replacement-they were a fun bunch of guys!)

We recently received notice of the death of a former Trollheim member, Joyce Onarheim Boe Pavlinski. No info was submitted, except that a memorial service was held July 1, 2017. Joyce was a member of Trollheim for many years. In the 1990’s, her craft in textiles earned her a moment in history when one of her coat designs became a much sought-for fashion statement. Trollheim extends its sympathy to the family of Joyce Onarheim Boe Pavlinski for their loss.

“This was the best cultural coup for Trollheim since 2006 when the princess was here!” Trollheim member Harlan Hagen

“Thanks to the Trollheim Lodge for hosting the Tidløs concert. It was such an awesome opportunity to hear them play since I’ve never heard anything like it before. It was great! The band members were so approachable and friendly. I hope that the lodge can do more of these types of events soon!” Trollheim member Quin Johnshoy (and Regis College student)

“The Norwegian singers, Tidløs were fantastic...thank you for arranging that. Already looking forward to the next time they can come. Programs like that are fantastic and we applaud you getting such good programs.” Trollheim members Vera Thorne and Jan (Thorne) Mason

“Just Awesome!!!” Trollheim member Megan Ingebrigtsen

“They (Tidløs) were wonderful!” Member Joan Enget

"Thank you for letting us know that the Tidløs - 5 young guys from Norway - were coming to Trollheim for a concert of Norwegian music! It was a delightful evening, and I am so glad that I attended the concert! My friend was delighted to be there as well. It was good to see a nice crowd, and hope you can get them back one day and we can encourage even more to share in a delightful evening. Will share their CD with friends at Fjelldalen!”-Trollheim friends and former members Crystal Sundet and Barb Robb

“Those of you who did not hear the Tidlos concert at Trollheim Lodge missed a rare treat. What wonderful musicians the Tidlos are with voices easy to listen to and the ability to play a wide range of instruments. Every one of them was so friendly and polite.” Trollheim member Donna Robinson

And didn’t Trollheim Lodge’s Main Hall look great decked out as a small concert venue?!?!

MAY SMORGASBORD

Our annual smorgasbord was held on May 20, 2017 and was a delicious spread of Scandinavian foods! I thank all those who volunteered to help with this meal and a special Tusen Takk to the team leaders; Louise Bath, Connie Bartram and Donna

Robinson. I don’t know what we would have done without you all! Elaine Homan, President

From Connie Bartram, one of the team leaders for this dinner:

• Dameklub members, friends, and family, you know who you are, for everything you helped with! The lodge couldn't hold these large events without you! We also appreciate Barb Bessesen for her Dameklub leadership.

• Cookie bakers--enough to freeze for the Tidløs performance on July 2nd.

• Deviled egg makers, enough for seconds and for the Monday night meeting.
