From the President:

October President’s Letter

First of all, I would like to say HURRAH! for the volunteers who helped Trollheim put on a great Walleye Fish Fry! We really had a great crowd! I also like to thank Coleen Rose, her granddaughter Elisha McDowell and Bonnie Johnshoy, all who gave up 1 day or the Labor Day weekend working in the Trollheim Library. That was a “labor of love” for their lodge! It looks so much better in the library!

I would also like to thank those of you who graciously sent checks to help with expenses in lieu of volunteer time. Your donations are greatly appreciated! I understand that many of us can’t lift, stand, or do physical work like we did in our younger years, and I do include myself in that group. Sometimes we need to call professionals to come help us with tasks that were once normal activity for the lodge.

Last month I ended my letter about bring up options for the future of Trollheim Lodge. Now don’t get the idea that this is something that needs to be decided upon right now; however, we need to be mindful of the direction we want the lodge and its building to go from here. We have had 25+ years with our home here at Trollheim. I’d like to see another 25, or at least 15 more years. However, that is asking a lot for a dwindling membership. So, on that note, I would like to give you some facts to think about as time goes by.

First, we are not in any financial crisis, yet. Our normal yearly expenses are harder to meet with normal income with our dwindling membership but we can thank the Norske Butikken team to make enough to help our budget each year.

Secondly, we have a lot and building that if and when we sell, will provide funds to continue to pay rental expenses for our club for many years to come. As long as we have members, Trollheim Lodge will live on with or without a building.

However, at this time, I personally, feel we should try to keep the Trollheim Building in good shape because: 1. We are the only Scandinavian-associated lodge building in the Metro Denver area. As the closure of other ethnic groups lodges, such as the Sons of Italy and the German Club, Edelweiss, it is more likely this type of hall to rent is quietly moving off the face of the Denver community. I feel, Trollheim Lodge can fill the gap by renting to these groups when needed.

2. We can’t continue having a large store as Norske Butikken without a building to hold it. This store is an important part of our income, and when other Nordic groups visit, our sales go up! As long as we have volunteers to run the store, our store does a great job. Being a Scandinavian gift shop, it would be hard to generate the revenue to keep this store functioning in its own storefront as its niche in the marketplace is quite small.

3. It is nice to have the space and rooms to host classes, dinners seminars, book signings, fairs, exhibitions, without having to search for a venue for each one of these activities or events. We have it here. These reasons seem to be good reasons for each and every one of us to try to do what we can to maintain this. The “Flip-Side” next month.

Calling Trollheim Members with education and/or work experience with bookkeeping, accounting, and/or QuickBooks OR interested in giving it a try.

We need members with bookkeeping and/or work experience background or a member who is interested in learning the job volunteer to run for our lodge Treasurer position. Installation will be in late January. We have trainers lined up to make for a smooth transition. How much time might this position take? Generally, because you will be surrounded by a high functioning board, perhaps 5 - 8 hours a month. THE LODGE NEEDS YOU! Contact one of the members of the election committee: Connie Bartram, (303) 467-3299; Perry Monkelien, (303) 699-1073 or Barb Bessesen, (303) 238-4352.

Don’t forget! Starting in November, we will meet for the general meeting on Saturdays, at 2 pm. Snack foods or desserts are welcomed but not needed, but there is no dinner on Saturdays! Sorry, but I still love to decorate the Halloween issue, even if I don’t have much time anymore! The Editor

Oct 2nd-Meet and Greet

A Visit with a Tourist Group from Norway! On Oct. 2nd, 2018, Trollheim Lodge will host a group of approximately 40 adult Norwegian Tourists (age range between 40-60). This group of friends from Norway travel together every few years to the U.S. One of them remembered stopping to visit Trollheim Lodge for a lovely visit several years ago, and the group leader requested another visit on their tour which begins on Oct 1st. They will fly into DIA, so Trollheim will be the first stop on this year’s tour. (This group does not tour to give a performance. They just wish to meet Americans.) The guests all speak English so this is an opportunity to chat with people from Norway, or practice your own Norwegian! We would also like to extend this invitation to members of all the SON lodges. We have had few events in recent years to meet a large group of Norwegians. Please join us! Let’s give this group a warm welcome on Tuesday, Oct 2, at 6 pm. This special event will include an American Dinner of Pulled Pork sandwiches (BBQ style), potato salad, coleslaw, beets, and pies for dessert for $10. (if you have traffic issues, we will keep the food warm!) Please pay at the door. RSVP, Please with Elaine Homan, at 303-882-8094 or 303-420-8888. Or email her at [email protected]. Now Rosemaling Classes

Rosemaling classes given by Louise Bath at Trollheim Lodge will start this fall on Saturday, Oct. 6. They will then run for the following dates: Oct 13, 20, and 27th; Nov 10, 17, and 24th; and possibly Dec 1st and 8th. Classes are $15 per session. The late start this fall is due to family visiting us from England in September. The style we will be pointing this fall is Trondelag, south of the Trondheim area in Oppdal and especially the work of Knut Horne (1763-1848.) The Horne family (pronounced Hooneh) was famous for its painters and woodcarvers for three generations in the mountain district of Oppdal in South Trondelag. Knut was influenced by European art and often painted cupboards and trunks with scenes of the hunt, officers on horseback, ladies in rococo dresses and gallant cavaliers. He liked to embellish trunks with allegorical female figures symbolizing summer and autumn. I will be giving out examples of these as well as the floral compositions he painted on cupboards and doors. I have used the floral works as the inspiration for our painting this fall.

Looking forward, I am planning to paint the Os Style in the New year. I was lucky to go on the Vesterheim Museum Folk Art Tour in June and studied Os painting with Hordis Juvik and Torunn Rod Farsund, well known Os painters, for the first week. The second week was spent in Sweden, studying Dalmalning or Dala painting. It was a wonderful trip, even though we were stuck in Iceland for two days the beginning. Two other painters were also on the trip from this area; Linda Stern and Toshiko Ogishi. Diane Edwards from Ft. Collins (and Trollheim member) was one of the Tour leaders and did an excellent job. I try to welcome all levels of painters to my classes. However, if you are a beginner, please contact me so I can help you get a better start. - Louise Email: [email protected] Phone#: 303-799-3527

2018 Walleye Dinner

A Great Meal!

Our 2018 Walleye Fish Fry was a success this year. No one reported any negative comments-last year someone did report that the plastic cutlery wasn’t appreciated, so we did it better this year!!! Happy diners, and happy volunteers made for another great Event. Tusen Takk to all of our helpers at this dinner!
