Stay Cool In the Summer SunDear Friends of the Village:

Anyone who has lived in Washington for more than a year knows that our summers are infamously uncomfortable because of our heat and humidity.  Many residents have the option of hunkering down at home or heading for the beach.  However those who are homeless don’t have this

option, and hyperthermia is a serious concern for those without safe shelter or a home to call their own.

Because of supporters like you, N Street Village is open 365 days a year to offer a place of safety, comfort and healing.  Not only does our Day Center provide meals and a cool indoor

place for any woman in need, we also provide temporary and permanent supportive housing to women and families.  And once a woman has entered our community, she has access to a host of services through our Wellness Center including medical and dental care, and wellness services such as yoga, massage, exercise or one of our many support groups.

Thank you for helping make our city a cooler -- and kinder -- place for the women who need it most.

In gratitude,

SchroederExecutive Director

P.S. – Please be mindful of individuals living on the street who might need safe shelter from the heat. If you see someone in need, please call 800-535-7252 to request transport to a nearby cooling center.

Discovery Communications Impact DayOn Friday, June 20, nearly 50 employees from Discovery Communications came to N Street Village to volunteer. The group worked on a variety of projects including: organizing and cataloguing donations, cleaning and gardening. This day not only benefited N Street Village, Discovery Communications held a global day of service where more than 4,000 employees in 35 countries left their Discovery offices to support 200 organizations in their community. N Street Village is grateful and honored to be a part of this global day of service. Thank you Discovery Communications!

N Street Village Premiers at AFI In June, HOW I GOT OVER by Nicole Boxer (producer of the Academy Award-nominated documentary The Invisible War), premiered at the Silver Spring AFI DOCS Documentary Festival to sold-out audiences. The film took a deep look at the power of the arts -- while also exploring the root causes of homelessness and the truths of poverty in America -- asking one profound question over and over: “Can art save your life?”

In July, over 10 members of Congress hosted a screening of this inspiring film at the U.S. Capitol. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a 2013 N Street Village Gala Founders Award honoree, introduced the film and reminded us that we are all more alike than we are different and that “each of us has to pull from our inner strength to face our challenges.”

HOW I GOT OVER, chronicles the journey of 15 formerly homeless women, living in N Street Village’s Recovery Housing program, as they participate in The Theatre Lab’s Life Stories program. In the end of HOW I GOT OVER, the women take to the Kennedy Center stage, where they step into the spotlight to share their harrowing true-life stories in a sold out, one-night-only performance, which took place in April 2012.

Throughout the powerful documentary, the actors from N Street Village share their experiences of trauma, addiction, recovery, perseverance, and triumph. They find hope, and we as viewers come to know who they are as individuals in our community.

While you can’t see the documentary in your local theatre, yet, we hope you will keep an eye out for it.
