STEEPED IN THE HISTORY

OF A GLORIOUS PAST

Isfield can claim a rich and vibrant heritage, with much of the growth of this pretty settlement attributed to Isfield Place, a stately home onthe edge of the village. It is thought that King Harold spent the night before the Battle of Hastings at Isfield Place and it was subsequentlyowned by the De La Warr family until 1507 when it was sold to John Shurley, Cofferer to King Henry VII and King Henry VIII. Isfield Place was down-sized during the early 18th century but still maintained its grandeur as a comfortable residence for the gentry.

The village population increased dramatically though in 1858 with the arrival of the railway and opening of Isfield station. The original Victorian station and signal box remain in Isfield and in recent times have been restored as part of a preserved heritage railway called the Lavender Line, which travels for a two-mile round trip between Isfield and Worth Halt.

Central to Isfield is the popular Laughing Fish Public House renowned for its colourful history, as it was first reputed to be a chapel when built in the 1860s and then later catered to 3000 Canadian troops stationed nearby at Sutton Hall during WW2.

There are fantastic walking, cycling and riding opportunities throughout the South Downs National Park, with a lattice of intertwining trails leading all the way to the coast with a diverse array of flora and fauna to appreciate.

Yet despite this rural position, all the day-to-day essentials are still on hand as the Isfield Farm Shop, less than a half mile walk from Lavender Fields, sells a wide range of groceries and has a full butchery service offering local meats.

If you’re out for the evening, why not try one of the many friendly and characterful pubs in the area? Either the Laughing Fish pub at the centre of the village or the Halfway House located nearby on the A26, is ideal for a quiet drink or a lazy Sunday lunch.

A WEALTH OF FACILITIES CLOSE AT HAND

Isfield is located just off the A26, connecting the two towns of Uckfield and Lewes, approximately 4 and 6 miles away putting a wealth of facilities within easy reach.

Uckfield caters for the everyday shopping needs with both Waitrose and Tesco supermarkets. In addition, there is a popular farmers’ market on the first Saturday of every month where you can buy and sample delicious local delicacies.

The Cliffe area of Lewes has been paved to provide a quaint pedestrian precinct with a variety of high street shops, whileantique shops abound. Lewes also has an array of excellent restaurants, bistros and brasseries serving mouth-wateringdelights, including Limetree Kitchen and the original Bill’s restaurant, serving delicious brunches and gastro fare.

Meanwhile Brighton, approximately 15 miles away, offers a world of shopping choice from the independent fashionable boutiques of the North Lanes to the well-heeled stores of the South Lanes, as well as the large shopping mall at Churchill Square.

FIRST CLASS FOR FAMILIES

Parents have a great choice of schooling at Lavender Fields, with Horsted C of E Primary and Manor Primary School in Uckfield both within easy reach. Equally, Uckfield Community Technology College and the Priory School in Lewes are both highly rated by Ofsted for secondary education.

For private schooling, Chailey Prep School and Lewes Old Grammar School, which caters for children from 3 to 18 years old, both deliver consistently good results.

Similarly, there is plenty to see and do for families in and around Isfield. Open throughout the summer months, Pells Pool in Lewes is the oldest documented freshwater public pool in the country, where you can swim in the open air or sunbathe on the grass of the nearby picnic area.
