LOSS OF THE YANKEE BLADE.m cie More Indian Troubles in Oregon, etc. Perhaps the most interesting item of news by our last California mail is the account of b the attack by the combined French and English 55 fleets upon the Russian defenses of Petropo- J5 lovseki, on the western coast of Kamsehatka, in w which it appears they were repulsed with con- 10 siderable loss. The San Francisco Times and Transoript gives the following version of the affair : By the sarrival of the French frigeates Forte ad Eurl- tt dice. and the French brig Obligado, we hare stirringnews cl from the first scene of01 conflict between the Allied Powers tO andthe Rustsianse, on the Pacific.r On the let and 4thof September an attack was made to by the combined fleet on the foetres• of Petrpolokvel. The English vesselsof war eompred the Prelsident. the Pique and the Virego, and the French the Forte, Eari- dice and the Oblgado. The aotion was a very severs one, to the English veMsess firing 3000balls. Two of the Ruatsian batteries were destroyed and two crippled. The loss on the side of the latter wasvery heavy, bot' is not eser. as tained. Of the English and French foree. slxty-four men rfell during the assault. The Russeian frigate Asroa, of forty-four guns, and the Diana, of twenty guns, were a moored inside andprotected by sand banks behind wlhih 1h they eserated as beyond the rerch of thePrench and Oel of the English vesselssuffered severely in the ight, 1 having lost her foremast, but the cfleet is expected to arrive in the course of a few days, andwesuppose willbe B recruited by the addition oftheAmphitrite and Trineo- mnle,l which with the French corvetto Artemeos, now cruising onour cost. Thecombined fleet of five British and four French will then probably proceed to Petropo- i loseki andcomplete the work. . When leasving the port anda short distance outside, the Russian merchantman Sitka was captured by the allied forces andsent te Vancouver. A Rnsslan supply0 vressel wasalso takeus and burnt. Throughout the siege, a we learn that the Ruseians foughtwith great courage, as $ theresult proves, The information afforded in regard te the details of the battle is, however, meager and unoetis-. a factory. It does not appear thatthe British andFrench p havecome of with any very dletingulished honor, but et heymayfare beter ona second trial. The defeees ofe Petropolovs i undnuhtedly render its capture quite a formidable undertaking. The Forte is a ship of sixty guns, the Euridie of thirty gons, and Obligado of thirty cane. Tse fest is anchored off North Beach. The Rtulian ship Silks wascaptured on the8th of Sept. She carried tenguns, a crew of thirty-firve men, and had twenty.five Ifasegers. The crew and passenogers were taken on board the Forte and t Etridie. andthe ship was taken charge of by the Preai- dent, Pique and tentmer Virago.to be conveyed to Van- eoue:'s Iloand. TieSitka woas loadedwith proeisions t for the ltoso•l ecttlements and had touched at Ayan. where she discharged partof her cargo, and was bound shence to Petropolvohki, when she fell In with the fleet h and surrendered at discreotion, declining to engoge in a el conliet wihth the odds ofseven toone. It is reported by the Euridioe that one American vessel was lying atPe- ropolovshti (probably the brig Noble). Off the Bond- wich Islands a Dutc sh hip, 130 days from Hong-kong for san Francisco. was spoken, short of water, and intending to put in at Honoluiu. HIer name w asnot learned. The death of the English Admiral Prisce occurrcd onthe 31st August, and was ast caused by a woundreoeired in C the sirge, but as wegather the factsa, from the dischargee fa pistol which he woaes picking up. There is no reason I to suppose that the act waspremeditatad, anod theonlu- sIon is that this unfortunate occurrence was purely acoi-- dental. Capt. Frederiot, of the Amphitrite. succeeds in command of the fleet. A bearer of dispatches for England has arrirved on the Forte, and will leave onthesteamer ef the middle of the month. TheFrench fleet have been twenty-sixdays from Petropolovskci. We regretthat during thee preseanosf o largs a Prenh I and British force in our harber, there are nne of our osn vessels of war here of a large cla.to reciprocate thos, I oational eourtesles so appropriate to the occasion. In the news summary of the San Francisco Herald, we find the following account of the ex- tensive swindling operations of the two brothers, Henry and John Meiggs: On Saturday, the 7th Inst., the city was thrown into the greatest excitement inconsequence of the circuLa- tion of a rumor that Henry Melggs, late a member of the Board of Alderman, and one of the moeet exteansive lum- ber merchants in the State, hadfailed for $800,00--that several forgeries had been discovered-that Melgge had purchased the barkt American, fitted it op in a splendid style, andtaking with hims his family, and his brother John . Meilggso recently elected Controller. and a large amount of treasure, est eall -for ports in 'the Pacif.e' The greatest excitement prevailedfor two or three days, andfor some time sno kidsa oould be formed astothe ex- tenot of the forgeries. The matter has bseen pretty exten- stvely investilgated since, and the flwlowing is probably not very far rom the true amount of the loss sustained by Meiggs's 6peratlons: Amount of failure ............................ $e00.000 Controller's Warrants forged ................... 600v o California Lumber Company forged .............. 3W0 00 Forgeories on sundry firms...................... 61.000 Total .................- - -..... $....Oe.00 The warrants wre generally made out in favor of Jesse L. Wetmor, and in sums of from $Io0 to$1000. At first it-wes thought that the plate, as well as the signature, were rounterfeit, but it is now conceded thattheformer was genuine. and so admirably were the latter execouted that theMayor and Comptroller eachpronounced them thlir own writing In addition to the above, it is believed that some $300,000 or $400,000O ofthe forgedComptroller's war- rante hare bees hypothesatod.in Now York. p, The amounts here set down areprobably greatly exag- 01 gerated. The Transcript, in eetimatiog the amount real ited by Meiggs outside of the failure in his proper bus- le ness, says: There I, as yet nyore indication of more than $40.000 Sof warrants havirbeenforged; these were received at it0o cets on the dollar, andthe lcsthus ascertained is $200,000. AN ALLEGEDEMBEZZLEMENT. On Satarday, the 14th inet., a greatdealof excitement war created in the city, by the circulation of a rurner that Mr. SmythClark, Secretary of the late Mayer, had been arrested on a eharge of embeaalinu $303,00, inC notes andCity and State seorp. depOsited in hie hand as Secretary of the Committee on Laud Claims, aNdreceived from the purchasers of the Slip Property. On investigs- tion it wasfoundthat the rumor, so far eas the allrations were ronerned wert correto, and that Mlr. Clark was in custody. Onehundre eand ninety thousand dollars of the above amount were in notes drawn to the order of the late teayor, and were depoelted at age, Baeon & Ceas. •nd were not negotiable. The remaining $118,000 were in City and State scrip; and Mr. Clark, It is alleged, when requesrted by the Treasurer to give ao account of the numbersandamounts, returned an ervasive answer. The tRecorder having flied the bailsat$880000, Mr. Clark, on Saturday night, demanded an immediate trial but the application war denied, inasmuch as the ease had beea postponed previously, at the requeest of the defendant, on Monday, and in oonseluence of that poestponementthe proeeutteon were unahble togo on with the triaL LOBE 01 THI yANKEE BLADE. CALIFOR NIA. ,Repulse of the Allied Fleets at Petropolovski.

STUPENDOUS PBAUDS IO 8AN PBRNCISCO.

LOSS OF THE YANKEE BLADE.mcieMore Indian Troubles in Oregon, etc.

Perhaps the most interesting item of newsby our last California mail is the account of bthe attack by the combined French and English 55

fleets upon the Russian defenses of Petropo- J5

lovseki, on the western coast of Kamsehatka, in wwhich it appears they were repulsed with con- 10siderable loss. The San Francisco Times andTransoript gives the following version of theaffair :

By the sarrival of the French frigeates Forte ad Eurl- ttdice. and the French brig Obligado, we hare stirring news clfrom the first scene of01 conflict between the Allied Powers tOand the Rustsianse, on the Pacific.r

On the let and 4th of September an attack was made toby the combined fleet on the foetres• of Petrpolokvel. The English vessels of war eompred the Prelsident. thePique and the Virego, and the French the Forte, Eari-dice and the Oblgado. The aotion was a very severs one, tothe English veMsess firing 3000 balls. Two of the Ruatsianbatteries were destroyed and two crippled. The loss onthe side of the latter was very heavy, bot' is not eser. astained. Of the English and French foree. slxty-four menrfell during the assault. The Russeian frigate Asroa, offorty-four guns, and the Diana, of twenty guns, were amoored inside and protected by sand banks behind wlhih 1hthey eserated as beyond the rerch of the Prench and

Oel of the English vessels suffered severely in the ight, 1having lost her foremast, but the cfleet is expected toarrive in the course of a few days, and we suppose willbe Brecruited by the addition of the Amphitrite and Trineo-mnle,l which with the French corvetto Artemeos, nowcruising on our cost. The combined fleet of five Britishand four French will then probably proceed to Petropo- iloseki and complete the work. .When leasving the port and a short distance outside,

the Russian merchantman Sitka was captured by theallied forces and sent te Vancouver. A Rnsslan supply0vressel was also takeus and burnt. Throughout the siege, awe learn that the Ruseians fought with great courage, as $the result proves, The information afforded in regard tethe details of the battle is, however, meager and unoetis-. afactory. It does not appear thatthe British and French phave come of with any very dletingulished honor, but ethey may fare beter on a second trial. The defeees ofePetropolovs i undnuhtedly render its capture quite aformidable undertaking.

The Forte is a ship of sixty guns, the Euridie of thirtygons, and Obligado of thirty cane. Tse fest is anchoredoff North Beach. The Rtulian ship Silks was capturedon the 8th of Sept. She carried ten guns, a crew ofthirty-firve men, and had twenty.five Ifasegers. Thecrew and passenogers were taken on board the Forte and tEtridie. and the ship was taken charge of by the Preai-dent, Pique and tentmer Virago. to be conveyed to Van-eoue:'s Iloand. Tie Sitka woas loaded with proeisions tfor the ltoso•l ecttlements and had touched at Ayan.where she discharged partof her cargo, and was boundshence to Petropolvohki, when she fell In with the fleet h

and surrendered at discreotion, declining to engoge in a elconliet wihth the odds of seven to one. It is reported bythe Euridioe that one American vessel was lying at Pe-ropolovshti (probably the brig Noble). Off the Bond-wich Islands a Dutc sh hip, 130 days from Hong-kong forsan Francisco. was spoken, short of water, and intendingto put in at Honoluiu. HIer name w asnot learned. The death of the English Admiral Prisce occurrcd onthe

31st August, and was ast caused by a wound reoeired in Cthe sirge, but as we gather the factsa, from the dischargeef a pistol which he woaes picking up. There is no reason I

to suppose that the act was premeditatad, anod the onlu-sIon is that this unfortunate occurrence was purely acoi--dental. Capt. Frederiot, of the Amphitrite. succeeds incommand of the fleet. A bearer of dispatches for Englandhas arrirved on the Forte, and will leave onthe steamer efthe middle of the month. The French fleet have beentwenty-six days from Petropolovskci.

We regret that during thee preseanosf o largs a Prenh Iand British force in our harber, there are nne of our osnvessels of war here of a large cla. to reciprocate thos, Ioational eourtesles so appropriate to the occasion. As the

Untted States steam frig•tls SusquehanOaand Mliseisippiore chortly expected fr,,m China and Japan, we hope theymay arrive before our European frieond take their Idepar-ture.

In the news summary of the San FranciscoHerald, we find the following account of the ex-tensive swindling operations of the two brothers,Henry and John Meiggs:

On Saturday, the 7th Inst., the city was thrown intothe greatest excitement in consequence of the circuLa-tion of a rumor that Henry Melggs, late a member of theBoard of Alderman, and one of the moeet exteansive lum-ber merchants in the State, had failed for $800,00--thatseveral forgeries had been discovered-that Melgge hadpurchased the barkt American, fitted it op in a splendidstyle, and taking with hims his family, and his brotherJohn . Meilggso recently elected Controller. and a largeamount of treasure, est eall -for ports in 'the Pacif.e'The greatest excitement prevailed for two or three days, and for some time sno kidsa oould be formed as to the ex-tenot of the forgeries. The matter has bseen pretty exten-stvely investilgated since, and the flwlowing is probablynot very far rom the true amount of the loss sustainedby Meiggs's 6peratlons:Amount of failure ............................$e00.000Controller's Warrants forged ................... 600v oCalifornia Lumber Company forged .............. 3W0 00Forgeories on sundry firms...................... 61.000

Total .................- - -.....$....Oe.00

The warrants wre generally made out in favor of JesseL. Wetmor, and in sums of from $Io0 to $1000. At firstit-wes thought that the plate, as well as the signature, were rounterfeit, but it is now conceded thattheformer wasgenuine. and so admirably were the latter execouted thatthe Mayor and Comptroller each pronounced them thlirown writing In addition to the above, it is believed thatsome $300,000 or $400,000O of the forged Comptroller's war-rante hare bees hypothesatod.in Now York.p, The amounts here set down are probably greatly exag-01 gerated. The Transcript, in eetimatiog the amount real

ited by Meiggs outside of the failure in his proper bus-le ness, says:

There I, as yet nyore indication of more than $40.000Sof warrants havir been forged; these were received atit0o cets on the dollar, and the lcs thus ascertained is$200,000. Placingo the forged notes at the highest eetim-r- ate. does not add more than $00,000 to this amount ; anod-the extent of the fraudulent Issue of Lumber Company'Stock not yet calculated over $300.000, hypothesated at

twenty-fire cents on the dollar, would be $75,000 moret which maCkes the aggregate each de•lscation amount to
