ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: The Pelicans fell short in their bid for their seventh straight win, dropping Wednesday nights game6-3 to Wilmington. It was tied 3-3 in the top of the seventh when two ineld singles set up Nick Van Strattens RBI single that gavethe Blue Rocks the deciding run. Van Stratten had a game-high three hits on the night while four Pelicans notched two hits each.Zach Zaneski extended his hitting streak to 17 with a pair and Jared Hoying had two singles as well. Leury Garcia singled anddoubled, as did Jared Bolden, who picked up his eighth-straight multiple-hit game. Down 6-3 with two down in the ninth, the Birdsput two on against Ryan Dennick to bring the tying run to the plate, but Jared Prince grounded to third to end the game.

VS. THE BLUE ROCKS: The longest-distance matchup in the Carolina League has been evenly matched in 2011, with theBirds going 8-7 so far in the season series. The home teams have dominated, with the Pelicans going 7-2 in Myrtle Beach and theRocks going 5-1 in Wilmington. The Blue Rocks swept Myrtle Beach at home May 20-22, but the Birds returned the favor by takingall three games a week later at BB&T Coastal Field. Injured third baseman Mike Olt killed Blue Rocks pitching to the tune of a .500average (13-for-26) in nine games. Jared Bolden has also fared well against Wilmington, batting .383 (18-for-47) in 13 games withve doubles and two home runs.

    - TODAYS PITCHING PROBABLES -GRIMM:Justin makes his ninth start after returning to the rotation on Friday against Salem. He allowed three runs, twoearned, in a ve-inning no decision. Grimm was outstanding through his rst three outings in Myrtle Beach, only allowing twoearned runs over 18.2 innings pitched (0.96 ERA). Since then, the righty from the University of Georgia has surrendered at leastthree runs in each of his last ve starts and seen his ERA move up to 3.42, but he has yet to pitch fewer than ve innings in a startat the Class A Advanced level. Rated as the Rangers 18th-best prospect entering 2011 according to Baseball America, Texas loveswhat it sees in his projectable 6-3, 195-pound frame. A 2010 fth-round selection out of Georgia, he has a mid-90s fastball, a sharpoverhand curveball and a changeup.

ARGUELLES:The Cuban defector makes his fourth start of the season against the Pelicans in his rst year of professionalball Stateside. The lefty from Guira, Cuba was signed by the Royals on January 5, 2010 after defecting along with Red Sox shortstopprospect Jose Iglesias while at the World Junior Championships in Edmonton in July of 2008. Arguelles, a member of the Royals40-man roster, pitched for La Habana Vaqueros in the Cuban National Series prior to his defection and also competed for the CubanJunior (18U) team in the COPABE AAA Pan American Junior Championships in 2007. There, he was the winning pitcher in thegold-medal game vs. host Mexico, tossing eight shutout innings of three-hit ball while striking out 11 in a 6-0 victory. In three startsagainst Myrtle Beach, hes 0-1 with a 4.32 ERA. On Friday against Frederick in his last start, he was rocked for ve runs while re-cording only ve outs in a 6-4 loss. Noel ranks ninth in the Carolina League in ERA (2.99) and third in walks per nine innings (1.38).

MATCHING THE NUMBER ON HIS BACK: With his RBI single in the rst inning last night, Pelicans catcher Zach Zanes-ki became the rst Carolina Leaguer in 2011 to hit in 17 consecutive games. The All-Star moved past teammate Ryan Strausborgerand Fredericks Miguel Abreu, who ran up 16-gamers earlier this year. Zaneskis run began when he went 2-for-10 while catchingall 23 innings in a June 12 marathon in Kinston. Z is batting .308 (24-78) during this stretch and has raised his average to .302.

TWO STREAKS SNAPPED: The 6-3 loss last night snapped the Pelicans six-game winning streak. It was their second six-gamer of 2011, Myrtle Beach swept Lynchburg and Winston-Salem in April. A win last night would have made the streak the Birdslongest since 2008, when they Birds ran up 11 straight wins from July 30th to August 8th. Another streak came to an end last nightwhen Kennil Gomez allowed two runs in relief in the eight inning. Gerard Halls two-run single broke a streak by the Pelicans bull-pen of 25 and one-third consecutive scoreless innings. Nine Myrtle Beach hurlers contributed to the streak over the past ve games.

NOW ITS JUST GETTING RIDICULOUS: Jared Bolden earned well-deserved Carolina League Player of the Week hon-ors on Monday and hes making a charge at doing it again. With a single and a double last night he now has eight straight contestswith multiple hits. During the streak hes 21-for-39 (.538) with four homers, 13 RBIs and 11 runs scored. Batting .247 on July 1, theLynchburg, VA native has hit .492 (29-59) over his last 15 games to raise his average 54 points and soar to fourth on the CarolinaLeague leaderboard, second among active players, with a .301 mark.

HUGE TURNAROUND: Both Jared Bolden and Jared Prince were mired in brutal slumps to begin the 2011 season, and bothhave recovered remarkably to rank in the CLs top ten in batting average. Bolden started 2-for-32 (.063), but has hit .335 since toraise his average to a .301 clip that is now the fourth-best in the Carolina League. Prince was in a 2-for-34 hole (.059) before raisinghis average to .282, ranking seventh in the loop. Prince also moved past Frederick outelder Steven Bumbry for the league lead inon base percentage at .384. He leads the circuit in hit by pitches with 19 and with only 35 strikeouts in 394 plate appearances, isthe second-toughest hitter in the league to whiff.

LEADING THE LOOP: The Pelicans lead the Carolina League in a number of categories. They have the best run differential inthe league (+80) and lead by at least ten points in both batting average (.268) and on base percentage (.337). On the hill, their 3.20staff ERA is tops in the circuit and they lead in both strikeouts per nine innings (8.8) and Ks per walk (3.2) as well.
