VISITOR BASE An annual study prepared by DK Shifflet estimated the Myrtle Beach destination greeted 18.6 Million visitors in 2016. Using monthly occupancy data as compiled by Coastal Carolina University, it is further estimated that approximately 6.7 Million of these visitors or 36%, visited the destination during the destination’s Summer (peak) Season, defined as June, July, and August. It’s estimated that approximately 5.2 Million visitors or 28%, visited the destination during the Spring Season, the destination’s 2nd most active season, defined as March, April, and May. The average length of stay is estimated at 2.5 to 3.0 days, with longer stays experienced during the Summer Season, moderated by shorter stays during the destination’s “shoulder” seasons. The destination’s top 10 feeder states during the Summer Season include North Carolina and South Carolina (excludes Horry County) ranked #1 and #2, together comprising approximately 38% of all visitors, with Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Maryland, New York, West Virginia and Tennessee rounding out the group in descending order. The seasonal profiles for the destination’s “shoulder seasons” also reflect the Carolinas in the top 2 positions.
