ANTI-LOCKING BRAKES WITH EBA

Designed to handle even the toughest tests, the power of ABS will notfade away when it’s needed most. So you can put your foot down as yousteer clear of trouble. And if you don’t press the pedal hard enough, EBA(Emergency Brake Assistance) steps in with a power boost to help bringthe car to a standstill in the shortest possible distance.

ACTIVE STABILITY SYSTEM

STC (Stability and Traction Control) is an anti-spin system that improvestraction in slippery situations by temporarily reducing engine torque.The enhanced version, DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) alsofeatures an anti-skid function that brakes one or more of the wheels tohelp keep the car on course. Both systems react smoothly, efficiently, andinstantaneously. For sportier driving or when driving in snow or sand, theanti-spin function can be reduced by the simple press of a button.

BI-XENON

As darkness descends, you will appreciate the powerful and effective lowand high beam headlights. And for an even broader and longer beam of light,you can add Bi-Xenon headlights. Integrated front and rear side-marker lightsmake it easier for other road-users approaching from the side to see your car.

Like its siblings, the Volvo V70 was conceived in the Volvo Safety

Centre. One of the most advanced facilities of its kind, this is where

we crash test every model we make. Above and beyond countless

computer simulations, we conduct over 400 full-scale collisions each

year. These tests are based on what our researchers discover on the

roads – we’ve investigated over 30,000 actual accidents since 1970.

In fact, everything we do to make cars safer begins, and ends with

real-life traffic situations. The Volvo V70 is testimony to this funda-

mental philosophy.REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCE

This fixed test tunnel is used for collisiontests inside the center, and for rollover testsoutdoors.

Within the center, our 850-ton barrier can bepositioned and configured to replicate thedangers of countless real-life traffic situations.What’s more, this is where collisions take placebetween a vehicle entering the center throughthe fixed tunnel and another entering from apre-defined angle via the movable test track.

The movable test track allows us to test ourvehicles on various outdoor surfaces. As theillustration shows, it even provides the oppor-tunity of crashing into solid Swedish bedrock.

WHIPS (WHIPLASH PROTECTION SYSTEM)

Whiplash is one of the most common traffic injuries, often resulting from low-speed rear impacts. WHIPS helps reduce the risk of long-term whiplash injuries.Integrated into the front seat backrests, WHIPS supports the spine and neck in a controlled manner, and is triggered by impacts of sufficient force from behind.

IC AND SIPS

The inflatable curtain (IC), and a laterally mountedairbag – part of the Side Impact Protection System.These are further examples of the car’s inherentsafety systems developed at the Volvo SafetyCentre in Sweden.

ORGANIC SAFETYINTUITIVE REFLEXES

If a collision is unavoidable, a series of safety systemsinteract. Together with the airbag, the front seat belt pre-tensioners provide a two-phase response to help embracethe driver and front seat passenger during the course ofa collision. The severity of the impact determines the levelof airbag inflation.

BRIGHT EYES

Effective headlights and optional integrated high-pressurewashers assure a powerful beam to help improve your nightvision. For an even stronger, more focused beam of light,opt for Bi-Xenon headlights. To help improve visibility in badweather, the door mirrors come with a water-repellant coat-ing, and the optional rain sensor automatically starts thewindshield wipers whenever they’re needed.

RESILIENT FRAME

The robust safety cage is an extremely rigid constructionintended to form an enclosure around the occupants ofthe car. It is surrounded by the body’s various deformationzones — resilient areas designed to help absorb some ofthe forces generated in a collision.

The V70 expands the scope of personal protection. Approach and Home Safe lightingwith ground lighting in the outer side view mirrors illuminates the area around the carand allows greater safety when approaching or departing the vehicle. An electronicimmobilizer and door locks that withstand most break-in attempts help protect againsttheft. A security system with sensors in the doors, hood and tailgate activate an alarmif someone should ever try to break into the vehicle. And in the event of trouble

– press the panic button in the remote control and the alarm is sounded. For an evenhigher level of personal safety you can add the HomeLink remote garage door opener(included in the Convenience Package). And to increase your capacity to drive awayfrom a threatening situation, even with a punctured tire, your Volvo can be equippedwith Self Supporting Run-Flat Tires, SST (included in the Run Flat Package).

been added to the Volvo V70 to help you avoid threatening situations.PERSONAL SECURITY

PROTECTIVE INSTINCT

Emergency Brake Assistance (EBA) will detect emergencybraking and assist the driver in bringing the car to a stop.And the Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) cradles thefront seat occupants to help reduce the risk of whiplashinjuries. The Occupant Weight Sensor (OWS) monitorsthe weight of the person in the front passenger’s seat, anddisables the front passenger’s side airbag if a child weigh-ing less than approximately 55 lbs is seated in that position.

SENSE OF BALANCE

A broad stance and an advanced chassis promote stability.The Stability and Traction Control system (STC) counteractswheel spin by cutting power to a wheel until it regains trac-tion. The Dynamic Stability and Traction Control system(DSTC) also works to prevent skids by applying the brakeswhen needed. The steering is communicative yet firm. Andfor an enhanced sense of road feedback at highway speed,there’s the option of a speed-dependent steering system.

MUSCULAR BODY

A web of beams and struts interact to help protect theoccupants without adding unnecessary weight. This solidsafety cage incorporates the Side Impact ProtectionSystem (SIPS), which distributes collision forces over alarge part of the car’s body. The sides are reinforced tooffer added protection.

A comfortable interior climate makes you a safer driver.Beyond temperature control, a cabin air filter and anadvanced air quality monitoring system ensure that theair you breathe is as clean as possible. ElectronicClimate Control (ECC) maintains the set temperatureinside the car regardless of the weather on the out-side. Separate settings can also be made for the leftand right sides of the cabin.

SHIP SHAPE

Stay equipped for the challenges of everyday life.The load and shopping bag holder creates an easilyaccessed area for sporting gear, shopping bags andother items. To regain access to the entire cargo area,simply fold down the holder into the floor.

COMFORTABLE KIDS

The integrated booster cushions help position childrenweighing 33-80 lbs at the correct height for the seatbelt. They also provide a high level of comfort and agreat view. And folding down the booster cushionswhen not in use is kid’s stuff.

Arguably, what you can’t get inside it isn’t worth trying to move. Should

you need more than 58 cubic feet of loading space, the roof carrying

system accommodates bulky items of up to 220 lbs – and the Volvo

V70 loves to tow.TEAM PLAYER

Up to five people travel comfortably in thishighly insulated passenger compartment, anda number of clever details increase versatility.The rear seat backrest can be adjusted to oneof two positions: one for maximum comfort,one for greater loading space while still seatingpassengers in the back. The optional retractable60/40-split nylon safety net or a steel safety-grille protect your passengers from unsecuredluggage. And to conceal equipment in the cargocompartment, simply pull out the retractableload cover.

Fold down as much of the 60/40-split rear seatas necessary to combine cargo and passengerscomfortably and safely. The head restraintstuck conveniently out of the way, providing aflat-floored cargo compartment. And to keeploose items under control, secure your loadusing the floor eyelets. You can also add a floor-attached load-securing net and a net-pocketfor the side panel.

For unexpected shopping bargains andparticularly bulky items, fold down the frontpassenger seat’s backrest. This provides youwith a flat-floored loading compartment that’sjust over 10 feet long. Moving up a level, there’sVolvo’s roof-mounted load-carrying system.And for the ultimate loading facility – the optionof a tow bar.

The Volvo V70 cabin filter prevents dust, exhaust particles and pollen fromentering the car through its ventilation system. The optional IAQS (Interior AirQuality System) monitors incoming air for unhealthy gases. If necessary it willclose the vents to ensure that cabin air does not become hazardous. This alsohas the added benefit of shutting out unpleasant odors. To make life more pleasantfor people with allergies or asthma, all the interior fabrics meet the requirementsof Oeko-Tex Standard 100 – an international standard ensuring that textiles andleather are free from allergy-inducing substances, health-impairing ingredients andharmful emissions. Additionally, numerous interior components are tested withrespect to contact allergies.

CLEAN OUTSIDE

More efficient engines mean lower fuel consumption and, in turn, less emissionof carbon dioxide – a greenhouse gas. Advanced emission controls eliminatebetween 95 and 98% of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides.The three-way catalytic converter is positioned to provide full exhaust conversionsooner after cold starting. All Volvo V70 engines meet stringent exhaust require-ments. The 2.4 engine complies with California’s ULEV and PZEV standards.A catalytic coating on the radiator-PremAir® *, converts up to 75% of the harmfulground-level ozone passing through the radiator into pure oxygen.
