The ancient Greeks referred to the area around Karachi as "Krokola," which was the site where Alexander the Great once set up camp after his Indus Valley military campaign. In the 8th century, the Arabs called the area "Debal" port, and Muhammad bin Qasim launched his invasion of the southern part of Asia from there.

The present location of Karachi was first inhabited by a Sindhi woman called Mai Kolachi, who set up her home there with her family. Later on, she was joined by other settlers, and the settlement grew into a village, which was named Kolachi-jo-Goth. The village became an important trading post in the late 18th century as merchants from Muscat and other parts of the Persian Gulf started arriving. The Talpurs took control of the village in 1795 and established a mud fort there.

British Colonial Rule

Kolachi continued to be a small village for several decades, but it would see great improvements after the British took over the village in 1839. Charles Napier led his British troops to conquer the entire Sindh province, and he decided to move the province capital to Kolachi. Under the governorship of Napier, Kolachi was renamed Khurachee Scinde, or Karachi Sindh, and the population grew to about 50,000 by 1847. Also, the city started to undergo massive develop-ment projects, with the construction of streets, highways, railroads, port facilities and European-styled structures.

Around the latter part of the 19th century, the city of Karachi had a population of around 105,000 people, which were made up of Hindus, Muslims, Jews, Europeans, Iranians, Lebanese and others. In 1900, the city became so con-gested that it had to build a tramway system, which was the first in India. By the year 1914, Karachi became the Brit-ish Empire’s most important grain exporting port, and a decade later, the city had its first aerodrome, which became the main port of entry by air into India.

Modern Era

In 1936, the province of Sindh was no longer under the rule of the Bombay Presidency, and Karachi was named the capital of the province. In 1947, a new country called Pakistan was formed, and Karachi became the capital city. In the following years, the population increased rapidly because of a great influx of refugees and immigrants from other countries. Despite the rise in population, the city managed to maintain its cultural diversity, and it continued to experi-ence tremendous economic and cultural growth. Karachi was the capital of Pakistan until 1959, when Islamabad was named the new capital city.

I am pleased that the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry will be staging 12th sequel of My Karachi – Oasis of Harmony 2015 Exhibition from April 10th to April 12th, 2015 at the Karachi Expo Center.

This mega event is regularly being staged since 2004 when I, during my tenure as President KCCI, came up with an idea of organizing a unique exhibition which particularly focuses on improving the positive image of Pakistan with a view to clarify a number of misconceptions about the overall security situation of Karachi.

In spite of current economic, political and social difficulties, My Karachi exhibition has become a signifi-cant event and one of the leading business platform for trade and industry. Since its inception, My Kara-chi exhibition has expanded significantly which not only attractsvisitors and exhibitors from all over Paki-stan but also lures foreign delegates from various destinations who take keen interest in various products and services displayed at the exhibition. It also provides a perfect platform to local and foreign business communities to hold B2B meetings and seek avenues for undertaking joint ventures.

I would like to convey my heartfelt appreciation to Governor Sindh, Dr. Ishrat ul Ebad Khan and Chief Min-ister Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah for extending full support and becoming part of this exhibition as co-host. It is heartening to note that Sindh government’s support to the business community of Karachi clearly depicts the close liaison being enjoyed by both stakeholders.

I must say that KCCI is undoubtedly playing a praiseworthy role in safeguarding the interest of local busi-ness community and I am fairly convinced that during its quest to highlight and resolve the issues being faced by businessmen and industrialists, the Karachi Chamber has succeeded in attaining a prominent position which has been acclaimed by everyone.

Lastly, I would like to congratulate the Karachi Chamber, its present Office Bearers, Chairman of KCCI Special Committee for My Karachi and the Managing Committee members for making all out efforts to make this exhibition yet another resounding success. I must also extend my prayers and well-wishes to all the exhibitors, delegates and visitors of the exhibition for making 12th My Karachi – Oasis of Harmony exhibition successful. I look forward to give them a very warm welcome.

May Almighty Allah bless you all and be with us in all our endeavors.

Since its first edition in 2004, My Karachi Exhibition gained the status of a unique mega event which brings together buyers and sellers of consumer goods, appliances and service providers under one roof and provides a window of opportunity for promotion and branding of Pakistani products as well as busi-ness to business exchanges between Pakistani and foreign entrepreneurs.Every year, My Karachi exhibi-tion attracts almost a million visitors who explore and discover pavilions and cultural events staged by the participants including national and international exhibitors.

Muhammad Idrees Chairman Special Committee for

My Karachi

It is a privilege for me to be assigned the task of chairing the Special Committee for ‘My Karachi-Oasis of Harmony’ exhibition, and have been tasked to organize the 12th annual event “My Kara-chi” with its theme “Oasis of Harmony “at Expo Centre Karachi from April 10th to 12th, 2015.

The prime goal of “My Karachi – Oasis of Harmony”, exhibition is to ensure that a large number of visitors come and shop in style, to ensure corporate entities meet and strengthen relationships and to ensure that the image and prestige of Pakistan and Karachi is enhanced and projected. Our aim is to encourage and bring various potential sectors in limelight and facilitate their product’s export through B2B and B2C meetings.

Being Pakistani, I have a desire to play my role that could strengthen & benefit the Pakistani economy, as this event serves as an effective channel to highlight the label of “Made in Pakistan” in the domestic and international markets.

The exhibition has undoubtedly gained international recognition as it is being attended by busi-ness representatives belonging to many countries. A provision has also been made for entertain-ment, children show and food court. Resultantly the exhibition would send positive signals abroad about Karachi as a peaceful city.

We sincerely believe that the 12th “My Karachi – Oasis of Harmony” exhibition would provide an exclusive source of marketing and a unique platform for interaction between the local and foreign businessmen.

I would like to express my sincere wishes and gatitude to the participants of “My Karachi – Oasis of Harmony” Exhibition.Wish you all the best!
