the Torah, were central to everyday life both in Judæa and in Jewish com-munities elsewhere, regulating religious, social, and civil interaction—although at this time the Jews were also subject to Roman law. Teachers of the law, who were also religious teachers, were called “Rabbi,” which is the source of the english word rabbinical (Science and Health citation 26), which means “having to do with religious or legalistic teaching.”

I AM so GRATeFUl for Christian Science and the many healings I have experienced over the years.

One morning, at the beginning of this year, as I walked down the stairs to breakfast I suddenly felt a lot of pain in one of my knees and could barely walk. This pain was a surprise to me because I hadn’t remembered injuring myself at hockey practice the day be-fore. I immediately began to pray with a line from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy,

that I love, “Become conscious for a sin-gle moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual, — neither in nor of matter, — and the body will then ut-ter no complaints” (p. 14). I soon real-ized that it was not my knee that had a problem; I needed to change the way I was thinking about it. I was seeing my knee as unsupported, weak, unstable, painful, and injured. In order to see myself correctly, as “purely spiritual,” I decided to see the useful purpose my knee served and pray about the

true spiritual qualities I ex-pressed, such as strength, support, stability, and completeness. I then went off to school claim-ing my spiritual perfec-tion in this way. In my third lesson at school, I suddenly remembered my knee. It had not hurt since I turned to God that morning. I was so grateful!

Next year, I finish high school and the topic of future plans comes up of-ten at school. I find that I sometimes feel afraid when think-ing about the fu-ture because I have not quite decided what I want to do and which univer-sity I want to attend. My Sunday School

teacher recently pointed out this help-ful passage to me from Science and Health:

“If you venture upon the quiet sur-face of error and are in sympathy with error, what is there to disturb the wa-ters? What is there to strip off error’s disguise?

“If you launch your bark upon the ever-agitated but healthful waters of truth, you will encounter storms. Your good will be evil spoken of. This is the cross. Take it up and bear it, for

t h r o u g h it you win and wear the crown. Pilgrim on earth, thy home is heaven; stranger, thou art the guest of God” (p. 254).

After studying this passage I soon realized that I had no reason to fear the future because it is in God’s hands and I just needed to trust Him. I needed to make sure that I was always listen-ing so that I could clearly hear what God was telling me. This passage also made me feel an excitement and joy. It reassured me of God’s care and my responsibility to “strip off error’s dis-guise” and immediately deal with any negative thoughts about my future. When I come across challenges in the future, these ideas will help me prove what I know to be true about God and about me.
