Allah is warning us in different ayat against our enemy – our enemy is the shaitan, and he declared his

enmity towards the human before we were born. And out of Allah’s mercy, Allah is telling us about our

enemy and his plots. The Quran draws the map on how we should be in this life, and what we need to

overcome in this life.

SURAH AL AN’AM 68

And when you (Muhammad SAW) see those who engage in a false conversation about Our Verses (of the Qur'ân) by

mocking at them, stay away from them till they turn to another topic. And if Shaitân (Satan) causes you to forget,

then after the remembrance sit not you in the company of those people who are the Zâlimûn – Surah Al An’am 68

IF WE SEE A CERTAIN TYPE OF PEOPLE TALKING…

This ayah is not just about the shaitan, but even the people who are trying to mislead others.

( وإذا رأيت): And when you see. This ayah is addressing especially the Prophet Mohammed (Pbuh) and to

his ummah that are reading the Quran. The Quran is telling us what are the ways to guidance and what

are the obstacles to guidance so that we may be on the Straight Path.

Allah is telling us about a group of people that if they are doing something in particular – there is

something we must do. What are they doing?

(تنا ـ those who engage in a false conversation about Our Verses (of the Qur'ân) by :(ٱلذين يخوضون فى ءاي

mocking at them.

فى يخوضوا حتى عنہم فأعرض ا تن ـ ءاي فى يخوضون ٱلذين رأيت ا وإذ

( خوض): means someone who engages themselves without thinking of the consequences – especially

someone who is adventure-seeking and is heedless of the consequences. Like being under the ocean,

and not knowing what is out there.

WHAT ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT?

( تنا فى ـ ءاي ): Our signs. These include signs of ( هللا اال اله ال ):

1. The Quran

2. The creations of the universe – sun, moon, stars, etc.

When we combine (تنا ـ does that mean that they are seeking to engage themselves in (يخوضون فى ءاي

pondering the Quran and the signs of Allah? No. They are crossing their boundaries regarding ayat

Allah. How? By engaging in talk that is contrary to ( هللا اال اله ال ).

When we reflect and ponder upon the Quran, it is supposed to make us submit to Allah – that is our

boundary.

HOW DO PEOPLE TALK DIFFERENTLY ABOUT THE TRUTH?

The truth is ( هللا اال اله ال ), so when we see the signs of Allah, we believe. But those people, when they see

the signs of Allah, they deny and belie the signs of Allah. They will also reject and mock the signs of

Allah.

IF WE COME ACROSS SUCH PEOPLE, WHAT SHOULD WE DO?

If we come across people in a gathering that are mocking the signs of Allah or rejecting and denying

them, we should ( فأعرض عنہم) – stay away from them.

These people are speaking contrary to the truth, so they are raising doubts. Allah is telling us this is an

obstacle to guidance, so Allah tells us to turn away from them – leave them and do not sit with them.

Anything that can affect your guidance, whether it is through temptations or doubts, it is best to stay

away from it.

WHAT IS THE CONDITION AFTER TURNING AWAY?

( .till they turn to another topic :( غيرهۦ حديث فى يخوضوا حتى

You can go back to being seated with them until they change the topic – when they stop mocking Allah

and His signs.

This shows us the moderation in dealing in such matters. It is not about saying we are strong enough

and that we need to engage and make a rebuttal and we should not cut them off completely.

Re-engaging with them after the topic has changed is not to show that you accept them mocking the

deen, but that there could be a chance for you to advise them after they have changed to another

topic.

Trying to advise them while they are engaged in talking in falsehood will not reach them and it can

make the situation worse and both parties could escalate the matter and make it worse. There is great

wisdom in following this manner of approach, subhan Allah.

This is not just about sitting with people who are talking falsely about the deen, but also engaged in

haram acts – it is haram for us to sit with them. Haram acts also includes those who gossip and

backbite against others.

So in this situation we were dealing with the human jinn, the shaitan will come into play soon.

SOMETIMES WE SEE OURSELVES IN SUCH A SITUATION, BUT DO NOT LEAVE, WHY?

( ن ـ يط ا ينسينك ٱلش .And if Shaitân (Satan) causes you to forget :(وإم

The command is to leave to the gather and not sit with them.

It’s not because we want to engage in the sin, but the shaitan makes us forget to obey the commands

of Allah. In times of ease, we can understand this ayah, but we are there on the spot, then the shaitan

makes us forget to get up and not engage with such people.

WHEN WE FORGET, THERE IS NO HARM, BUT WHEN WE REMEMBER, WE SHOULD…

( لمين ـ ڪرى مع ٱلقوم ٱلظ then after the remembrance do not sit in the company of those :(فل تقعد بعد ٱلذ

people who are the Zâlimûn.

As soon as you remember the command of Allah, then do not sit with the wrong-doers.

The wrong-doers are the ones who talk in falsehood, or act contrary to Allah’s commands – those who

are crossing their boundaries.

So we see that forgetfulness is one of the characteristics of the human, but Allah will not punish us for

our forgetfulness – but when we remember the commands of Allah, then we need to take a valid

action.

Sometimes we blame people for forgetting, but this is an in-built quality of every human. For example,

it is a valid reason if we forget to pray, but as soon as we remember, we have to immediately take

action.

We need to remember that the way to Allah is to know ourselves, know Allah, and to know our enemy

so that we may reach our final destination.
