Barbara J. Schafer, director of CareerServices, and Carilyn Penrod, HumanResources coordinator, work dailyhelping students and graduates to be

ready to enter today's workforce orpreparing them to enhance theircurrent professions.

"The workplace remains highlycompetitive in terms of finding a job,"says Schafer. This is evidenced by thecurrent unemployment rate. A U.S.Department of Labor Bureau of LaborStatistics press release reports a slightdrop in the national unemploymentrate, dipping to 8.2 percent in March2012. While the number of new jobscreated was fewer than the job gainsin recent months, the sectors showinggrowth include hospitality, health careand financial services.

No matter what field interests you, itis beneficial to include your soft skillsin your pitch. "Before you can marketyour soft skills, you must know whatthey are. Soft skills are personalitytraits; the things that make you whoyou are," says Schafer. "You seldomlearn soft skills in trade school orcollege. They are life skills that youdevelop through your experiences."

"Confidence and a positive attitudeare important soft skills that manyemployers value as much as technicalability," says Penrod. Examples of

other soft skills include a strong workethic, flexibility, time managementskills, good communication skills andworking well in a team environment. You may already have some of thesecharacteristics listed on your resumewithout realizing that you aremarketing your soft skills.

"The main items I look for ininterviewee, apart from hard skills, are self confidence, eye contact anda firm handshake," says Penrod. These soft skills, combined withintegrity, appropriate dress and goodgrammar, can be collectively definedas professionalism. "Listening skillsmatter, too. Is the candidate payingattention to what I'm saying? Is thecandidate providing thoughtfulresponses?" All of these attributescombine to create an element of trustbetween employer and applicant.

Listing your soft skills on a resume is agood way to introduce them to aprospective employer. However, youwill need to prove you actually havethem by providing examples of howeach manifests in your work. "If yousay you have good communicationskills, you must be able to explain thiswell in an interview," Schafer says."Failure to do so will convince theemployer that you really don't havegood communication skills. This holdstrue with any skill, hard or soft. Knowyourself and address it confidentlywith the employer."

"The initial interest a prospectiveemployer will have in you will be foryour hard skills, your ability to performthe technical part of the job. In theend, however, the things that will helpyou seal the deal on that interviewwill be your ability to market your softskills and match them to the position,"says Schafer.

The origin of our word panicis derived from the Greek godPan. According to the Mer-riam-Webster New Book ofWord Histories, this lusty andmusically gifted god was alsoknown for giving great shoutsthat instilled fear into giantsas they battled the gods. Panwas worshipped in Athensbecause it was believed thathe instilled fear into thehearts of the Persians caus-ing them to flee the Battle ofMarathon. And that is wherewe get our word and idea ofpanic-any sudden andgroundless fear.

AUBURN — When Tarra Arsenault tellsfriends she's a student in precisionmachining technology, they have “noclue what I'm talking about,” she said.

She tells them, “I work on a bigmachine and make metal parts. It's gotto be precise.”

Arsenault, 19, of Rumford, expects tograduate from Central MaineCommunity College in 2013 yearowing $3,500 in loans and to get a jobat a starting salary of $40,000.

A skilled machinist can go anywhere inthe world and get a good-paying job, officials said May 1, unveiling a newprogram to lure Maine high schoolstudents to that field.

The Maine Community College System, the Manufacturers Association of Maineand Great Bay Foundation have joinedforces and created a new program,Future for ME, Maine CommunityCollege System President JohnFitzsimmons said May 1 at a newsconference.

The program next year will offer$4,500 scholarships to 28 high schoolgraduates.

“While some students graduate fromcollege with $200,000 in debt andvery little in job prospects, these studentswill graduate with no debt and probablya $40,000 job,” said Central MaineCommunity College President ScottKnapp.

The Future for ME program will createtwo full-time community college staffersto work with students. Those staffers willvisit high schools to talk to juniors andseniors about what a great career fieldprecision machining is, Knapp said. Thehigh school visits will begin this fall, hesaid.

Candidates will need high skills inreading, writing and math. “You cannotcome into this program with consumermath. This is an algebra-basedprogram,” Knapp said.

Across Maine, precision machiningemploys more than 50,000 workersand is a key export business,Fitzsimmons said. “There are over 900job openings in our state. The industry isfacing a daunting challenge of an agingwork force.”

Offering scholarships to 28 sounds likea small number when considering the900 job openings, Fitzsimmonsacknowledged, adding that thecommunity college system should beenrolling 300 to 400 to catch up.

The new program “is the beginning,” hesaid. “We are very excited aboutattracting students directly from highschool into this program and into theindustry.”

Precision machining courses are offeredat community colleges across Maine, but the Auburn program is one of thelargest. That means Future for ME will bemostly centered on the Lewiston-Auburnarea.

According to Lisa Martin, executivedirector of the ManufacturersAssociation of Maine, 40 Mainecompanies were recently asked howmany job openings they had. “Fortycompanies said over 230 jobs,” Martinsaid. Those jobs pay between $30,000and $60,000 a year.

Companies who need skilled machinistsinclude Pratt & Whitney of NorthBerwick, which makes jet engines andrecently announced it's hiring 400workers. Hussey Seating, also of NorthBerwick, is adding 70 jobs, Martinsaid. Other businesses that are hiringinclude those that manufacture medicaldevices, bioplastics, metal fabrication, electronics, food products and textiles,Martin said.

Workers ages 18 to 24 have thehighest unemployment rate, “yetmembers of our manufacturingassociation echo the concerns of theircounterparts all over the country; theycannot find a skilled work force to fillhundreds of thousands of jobs goingunfilled because of the lack ofcandidates,” Martin said. That'shampering business, she said.

“Companies turn down work becausethey don't have the work force to fill theorders.”

Part of the problem is that the publicdoesn't know what precision machiningis. Martin said the technology is used tomake specialized parts for all kinds ofthings.

“If you are flying in an airplane (or

But I think it might be time for me todo something different.

So, what do I do? Which train of life, which path should I take?

As I think about the possible paths Ican take, the uncertainty andunpredictability of the economy andtrying to figure out a career stressesme out. I get anxiety just thinkingabout it. You can't count on anythinganymore, much less "plan" a career. With so much career uncertainty, what always helps me think clearly isa conversation with a friend. So I satwith my friend Ben to catchup at acoffee shop outside Grand CentralStation in New York City.

I told him that I was thinking of anumber of career paths. All of whichSEEM no better than the one of sittingstill. Path 1 has these advantages butit doesn't pay as well and who knowswhat will happen after the first year.Path 2 seems pretty good but will Ireally be satisfied? Path 3 is a big riskwith a payoff years away...maybe.Path 4 is a radical shift and willrequire me to make a lot of sacrificesand should I be risking so muchduring a tough and an unpredictableeconomy when I have a mortgage topay and a family to feed?

Did you ever feel like all the paths infront of you are all bad?

Speaking to Ben made me feel better. He told me of his experience with thisstart up business he and his businesspartner operate. They started a smallcompany a few years ago andrecently approached a potential bigcustomer. Being skeptical at theirbusiness, this big customer askedthem what they've accomplished todate. Slightly unsure, they scrambledto pull together a presentation thatreflected their achievements sincestarting the business.

When they finished the presentation, they were pleasantly surprisedbecause they had actuallyaccomplished a lot...significantlymore than they thought. They hadn'trealized how much they actuallyachieved until they looked back andwrote it down.

What I learned from speaking withBen is that you can only connect thedots in your life looking back. Thatwhen you take a good hard lookback at all the points in your life, allthe choices you made, all the pathsyou took-it all makes perfect sense. And it usually works out! But whenyou're the midst of all the chaos of life

or deciding which path to go to next, you are unsure where it will lead you.

What I realize is that We havealways lived in chaos and have beenembracing it all along! It onlyappears orderly or connected whenyou look back.

I met my wife by chance. I live whereI live through random coincidence. Imet my friends amidst chaos. I workwhere I work by a stroke of luck. Halfway in my career, I was given what Ithought was the worst job ever. Yearslater, it was the best thing that everhappened to me! So much of my lifehas brought me to my present momentby chaos, luck, chance andrandomness. No path I took backthen had a guaranteed outcome ofsuccess. No path was really all thatsecure. Or perfect.

I believe that as I think about takingthe next step in my career and my life,I don't need to over-analyze thepossible consequences. Instead, whatI need to do is to balance my overlylogical, hyperactive mind with myintuitive mind and choose a pathbased as much on my gut, instinct, passion, personal interest and corebeliefs.

I have realized that if I am to feel less

stress and anxiety about careeruncertainty, I need to accept thatchaos and unpredictable events willlie on every path. No matter whichroad I take, it will be full of bumps, shocks and maybe even LUCK!

And just maybe taking one of thosepaths will put me into what I call the"Sweet Spot" of Luck, Randomnessand Chance! You have to be in it towin it!!!

And maybe the guy who everyonesays is 'lucky' will be me? Maybe theperson everyone thinks has got a'golden chance' might just be me.Why not? In a world full of chaos andunpredictability, anything is possible -bad and good. But why not good? Why not awesome things? Why notsuccess? Chaos favors those whoembrace it!

So, on the road full of chaos it doesnot matter which path I choosebecause there is no sure outcome ofany path. All the dots will connectand everything WILL make sense inthe end. What really matters most isthat I stop staring at the lists of prosand cons and start walking!

Recently I had my 19 year anniversary working for a Fortune 500 company. NineteenYEARS!!! I can't believe it. When I started, I never expected to stay as long as I have— by luck or by choice. Writing a Winning

Be sure to include some accomplishments for each position you’ve

held. For example, if you were a salesperson you might include

information like “increased sales by 25 percent my first year by

attending industry trade shows,” or if you are an accountant, maybe

you “saved the company 20 percent by comparing long distance

options.” Make sure any claims you make are true and that you can

provide proof if asked.
