If you look through the ads postedonline or in your local newspaper, you may come to the conclusion thatthe only way to get a job today isby going to college for at least fouryears. Then, the world opens up foryou.

Until then, you'll have to settle for ajob paying minimum wage thatdrives you crazy. Each day will befilled with either too much work forthe pay, or sheer boredom from themonotony of it all.

Well, contrary to popular belief, there are plenty of job categoriesfor those without a Bachelor's (orabove) degree. They are not onlywell paying, but can also developinto very satisfying careers. You willlearn additional skills as youadvance in your field. You maybecome a crew foreman or shiftsupervisor where you will developmanagement skills. You may earncertification on specific equipment, and will be your company's expert

on the operation and maintenanceof the machinery. You may decideto start your own business in thesame field, and you'll developbusiness operations techniques.

There are several fields with astrong demand even in this currenteconomic funk (see the jobprospects for these at the Bureau ofLabor and Statistics websitehttp://www.bls.gov). These includethose in the medical and dentaltechnology fields, the constructiontrades, and commissioned salespositions.

This is a very good thing for thosewith a technical militarybackground, those that haveadvanced training in a technicalfield, or those that will go intoapprenticeship programs for theskilled trades. Your hands-onexperience gives you the advantageof actually having done the job

successfully. While your newemployer may send you to schoolfor additional training on specific

equipment or procedures, they'llview you as an employee that'sready to produce for the company.

Also, when you take into accountthe lower cost of earning aprofessional certification, orearning your Associate's degree, having a four-year degree may notbe the path to the "Promised Land"that's commonly projected.

That isn't to say that having moreeducation is bad. On the contrary, those with higher college degreescould earn twice as much, onaverage, as those that don't overthe course of their careers. If you'replanning to go into engineering, medicine, law, education, or thesciences, earning a Bachelor's,Master's, or Doctoral degree will bea requirement in most occupations.

So what does that mean for you?Only that having a four year degreeisn't the end all; be all that the adsseem to imply. With a bit of

advanced training, either throughformal schooling or anapprenticeship, you may qualify fora career you'll love and never haveto take the "fluff" courses ourinstitutions of higher learning forceonto their students.

For those in the military, you maywant to consider earning yourAssociate's degree before youleave the service. Your courses andtesting are paid for by thegovernment, and you'll find thatyou've earned the bulk of yourcollege credits from everythingyou've done so far in your career.Having a degree along with yourexperience will move you to thefront of the line when it comes togetting interviews as a civilian.

While it's true that the job market isbarely crawling along, there arelots of opportunities for those withthe skills employers are looking for.Don't fall into the mindset that if youdon't have a degree you're

unemployable. Use your skills andexperiences to take advantage ofthe openings that the current jobmarket does offer.

How Important is itthat we Love our Jobs?

Work/life balance expert Jim Bird (www.worklifebalance.com) sayswe hear all the time how important it is to have jobs we love. Yet mostpeople he knows don’t love their work. They either accept it ortolerate it. And that’s okay, Bird says. He points out that while it’snot necessary to be passionate about your job, you should bepassionate about how well you do the job. Why? Because that’swhat you do for yourself.

Lacking passion for your job doesn’t necessarily mean you’re livingyour life less well than the individual who is passionate about work.Your passion may surface in regard to other areas of your life. Birdoffers these suggestions for generating more ardor for living:

• Write the essay or book that’s been in the back of your mind.• Take a class in a subject that engrosses you.• Teach a class in the subject that engrosses you.• Cook dinners that will make your friends swoon.• Go to your favorite sporting events.• Let the people you’re closest to know how much you adore them.

The key is to set aside time for doing whatever it is you love todo. The first step is deciding you’re going to do it. The importantsecond step, Bird says, is to go for it.
