Staying positive can be hard in today's world, buthere's one small way to work a little positivity in yourdaily routine. Each day, before you sit down to work, grab a small piece of paper and write a nicethought down about someone you work with. Later, when you see that person, work your positivethought into your conversation. It's a small way ofmaking the world just a little nicer, and it just takes aminute to plan and a short time to deliver.

Enhancing your career can depend on how ready youare to take advantage of opportunity when it presentsitself. That means that you need to be ready tointroduce yourself quickly to people you might run intocasually in the office or in other business settings.Mike Myatt, in the article “How's your elevator pitch?”

on the Ezine Articles Web site, says that he hasseveral versions of his own introduction prepareddepending on audience, environment and need.

Myatt says that a good introduction imbues youwith credibility and confidence and allows you to tellothers what you do and how you are workingtoward eliminating fears the company has, eradicating painful situations the company faces, ormeeting needs the company has pinpointed foritself. And Myatt says you should be able to do thisin 50 words or less.

So, for instance, when you run into a manager, you could introduce yourself by saying: “My nameis Jim Johnson. I'm a marketing representative. Ispecialize in making sure new clients arecomfortable in their knowledge about our servicesbefore they commit their money to us. And thisyear, I'm working toward the goal of 100 percentclient satisfaction.”

Once you have an introduction that you like, work to perfect it. Practice it – and then use itwhen the opportunity arises.

Preparing for small moments canopen doors to a bigger future.

Why is it that the resume business seemsto dry up during the months of July andAugust, and again during Novemberand December? "That's easy," you'll say."Everybody goes on vacation duringthose times. Nobody's hiring."

While it's true that quite a few vacationshappen during the aforementionedperiods, one thing that never takes avacation is job openings. The widgetassembler who gets a better offer in Julyisn't going to wait til September to leavethe job and create the opening, right?Nor is the CFO going to hold off a fewmonths until "vacation season" is over toannounce her retirement.

So why aren't you taking advantage ofthe summer months? Job-hunting is a full-time job that doesn't take time off forvacations or sick days. You should bedoing something every day that pushesyou close to your employment goal.

As noted at the beginning of this article, the resume business dries up during Julyand August, and again duringNovember and December. If yourcompetition's out taking those months off, doesn't that improve the possibilities foryou, even if only slightly?

Successful people develop a talent forseeing opportunity where others do not. It's reminiscent of the story of two rivalshoe salesmen who were on the sameocean liner. The ship suffered somemechanical upset and they foundthemselves on the proverbial desertisland, populated by friendly peoplewho wore no shoes in the tropicalweather.

At the end of their stay on the island, each salesman communicated to hishome office. The first one's communiquesaid simply, "Desert island with noopportunity. Nobody wears shoes." Thesecond salesman's communique said,"Unlimited opportunity here! Everybodyneeds shoes!"

Opportunities exist everywhere; yousimply must learn to discern them. Somecases will be fairly obvious; an island fullof barefoot people just waiting for you tocome along. Others won't be as easilyrecognized; a vice president who stepsdown, enabling a manager to take hisplace, which leaves an opening for thatmanager's job which you just know youcould do. The job you know you want todo.

The point is, job openings don't go onvacation. You must follow the news fromevery company that might be a targetevery day, and be aware of every move, every opening created by a move. Howelse are you going to know when thatvice president decides to leave?

The new job arena is one of instabilityand uncertainty. Are you drifting alongin your job at the mercy of theeconomic waves? Staying on top ofyour career and your resumé has neverbeen so important. The way to manageyour career in an unpredictableenvironment is by being proactive. Evenif you are one of the rare breed thathave a written plan for your careerpath, you need to be open toalternatives for the bumps along theway.

John Kromboltz came up with atheoretic approach to careerdevelopment called "PlannedHappenstance". It involves using whatyou learn along your life path in variousexperiences to direct your career future.Planned happenstance is not to beconfused with lack of planning. Manypeople are working in jobs they neverexpected to have because various lifecircumstances and lack of planninglanded them there. For example, I don'thear children say, "I want to be agrocery store manager when I growup," but there are plenty of grocerystore managers out there. They mayhave started as cashiers and perhapslacking direction or completion of ahigher education, simply worked theirway up over a number of years.Planned happenstance is having ageneral or specific direction, guided bylearning from activities over time. However, it seems traditional career

planning combined with plannedhappenstance may be the bestproactive choice of action.

1. The first step in planning is toupdate your resumé. That way, if anopportunity arises, you are prepared. Also, you really need to complete aprofile on LinkedIn, the most used newtool by recruiters. The website is user-friendly and gives tips on improvingyour profile.

2. Next, develop what you wouldlike your career path to look like, including positions you would liketo hold, education you plan toobtain, and new skills you plan todevelop. Use a blank sheet of paperand put it on a timeline with expecteddates for each step and how you planto accomplish the progression. ONEThas a wealth of tool that can help youdo this.

3. Then, you incorporate "PlannedHappenstance" into your careerpath. Broadening your horizons is agood way to begin. This is achievedthrough engaging in interesting, exploratory, and beneficial career andpersonal growth activities such asongoing learning opportunities, participation in industry associations, volunteer work, or other activities. Thinkabout what your passions are andspecial skills in which you excel. Writepossible activities on a separate sheetof paper. Then, make branches off your

timeline with possible areas from whichyou may consider deviating and whatalternatives you might consider.Deviations could be alternativepositions, careers, and/or industries. Also, consider self-employment orstarting your own business.

4. Another critical piece ofplanned happenstance is keepingin contact with your network offamily, friends, acquaintances, andcolleagues. You never know when acontact may learn about an opportunitywhich piques your interest. Researchshows that 60-80% of jobs are neveradvertised and are filled throughnetworking. Interestingly, most jobsobtained through networking arethrough "weak connections". Weakconnections are people to whom youdo not have close or strong ties. Forexample, weak connections could belong lost classmates, casualacquaintances, former co-workers, ordistant relatives. Be a network resourcefor those people as well, and they aremore likely to think of you when hearingabout an opportunity.

As our careers progress through theyears, life happens as well, throwingroadblocks, detours, and potholes inour paths. It's how we plan for andhandle unplanned issues thatdetermines how well we developmeaningful careers in the midst of it all.Planning for experiences that will keepyou going in the direction you desireand incorporating what you learn intoyour career plan is the basis of plannedhappenstance. Plan, experience, adapt, and excel.

How Important is itthat we Love our Jobs?

Work/life balance expert Jim Bird (www.worklifebalance.com) sayswe hear all the time how important it is to have jobs we love. Yet mostpeople he knows don’t love their work. They either accept it ortolerate it. And that’s okay, Bird says. He points out that while it’snot necessary to be passionate about your job, you should bepassionate about how well you do the job. Why? Because that’swhat you do for yourself.

Lacking passion for your job doesn’t necessarily mean you’re livingyour life less well than the individual who is passionate about work.Your passion may surface in regard to other areas of your life. Birdoffers these suggestions for generating more ardor for living:

• Write the essay or book that’s been in the back of your mind.• Take a class in a subject that engrosses you.• Teach a class in the subject that engrosses you.• Cook dinners that will make your friends swoon.• Go to your favorite sporting events.• Let the people you’re closest to know how much you adore them.

The key is to set aside time for doing whatever it is you love todo. The first step is deciding you’re going to do it. The importantsecond step, Bird says, is to go for it.
