Writing a Winning

Be sure to include some accomplishments for each position you’ve

held. For example, if you were a salesperson you might include

information like “increased sales by 25 percent my first year by

attending industry trade shows,” or if you are an accountant, maybe

you “saved the company 20 percent by comparing long distance

options.” Make sure any claims you make are true and that you can

provide proof if asked.

You're certain you want the job. You knowyou'd be good at it.

So you need to give yourself all the supportyou can at the interview. One way to do thatis to wear the colors that support the impressionyou want to make. Here are some tips for thebest colors to wear as well as colors NOT towear in a fairly conservative, traditional workenvironment.

Colors to wear:Navy carries authority without beingoverbearing. Shades of blue,in general, suggest all of the boy scout attributes: brave, reverent, trustworthy, loyal, etc. Stick with darkto medium blues for interview purposes.

Gray makes you appear balanced, andunbiased. It's a respectable, neutral, calmcolor. Wear it if you need to project a veryconservative image with your most flatteringshade of white. However it is the leastmemorable color, so, if you want to make astronger impression, add a blouse or tie in yourbest shade of red, teal, or purple.

Dark tones of neutralized green, like forestor hunter, give a stable impression. It says "I'mgrounded in my area of expertise." Dark greensare linked with trustworthiness similarly to blue.

Purple is a great alternative to navy or gray inbusiness situations where you need to projectconfidence and individuality. Stick toneutralized medium to dark purples. They'reprofessional and appropriate. However, avoidpurple if you need to fit in rather than stand out.

Burgundy helps a younger woman look moremature and competent. If you're new to anindustry, it can say "I'm refined andexperienced in my field." I would onlyrecommend this as a tie color for a man. Awoman could wear it in a suit.

Colors not to wear:Red gives the impression you're not a teamplayer. You seem to be only concerned aboutyourself, and you want to be noticed! Not thebest message to be sending a prospectiveemployer.

Brown, especially light to medium brown, canmake you disappear into the woodwork. Itwon't cause you to attract attention. It can seemsafe and boring and a bit stodgy. One caveatthough-if it's a particularly rich shade of black-brown that matches your hair exactly, the effectcan be terrific.

Yellow is cheerful and optimistic, but it canalso make you appear flighty, whimsical, so

people won't take you seriously. You'll seemsomewhat impulsive and possibly a poor risk.

Orange is a declassifier. That means you'llappear less than classy. Orange is not goodfor any business situation as it's the leastprofessional seeming color. It can look cheapno matter how expensive the garment.

Black and white are often suggested asappropriate interview colors, but the highcontrast is extremely authoritarian, and youmay seem to be challenging the authority of theinterviewer. This may be a questionable choiceeven in a conservative arena.

Pink is passive. Good for gaining sympathyand soft hearted responses, but don't count onit to send the message that you're a competentprofessional.

Thinking about your color choices pays off. You'll have influence over your interviewers'responses to you And he or she is unlikely toeven be aware of it!

You’ll want to answer questions to the fullest of your ability. Inorder to do this, think about what you may be asked before theinterview and prepare your answers accordingly. You may evenwant to setup a practice interview with a friend or family memberto test your skills. It is useful to have a game plan for answering. I like to use what iscalled the “STAR” approach. Do this by describing the SITUATIONthat you were in or TASK you needed to accomplish, the ACTIONyou took, focusing on yourself and your skills even if you were in agroup, and the RESULT of your actions. How did everything turn outin the end?

INTERVIEW TIP:

Make theMost ofAttending a

Make theMost ofAttending a

Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically toline up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the sameemployer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimesconfusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet companyrepresentatives face-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help make your Career Fair experience a positive one.

ResumesBefore the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are goingto be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’reinterested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not asinterested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Besure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread thembefore you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness onyour part and your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t beafraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you arethere for!

Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of yourresume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about yourabilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very muchlike your objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support yourqualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representativeknow why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, specificity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!

Everyone wants to be successful in the workplace, but sometimes it's hard to figure out how to getyour career moving in the right direction. Followthese five tips to ensure that you build skills andstart movement to where you want to be.

• Start from where you are - Make every effortto build your skills in your current job so that ifand when you make a move or go for a promotion, you have something to take with you or show. It'susually better to go step by step, rather than hopefor a big promotion someday. Focus on doing thebest possible job you can now, and plan future ca-reer moves carefully.

• Sharpen your computer skills - Today, it reallydoesn't matter what your job is - at some point youwill probably need to bee proficient in using a

computer. Try to learn everything you can so thatyou are more marketable.

• Develop a learning attitude - Learningin your career should never come to a stand-

still. Commit yourself to a lifetime of work-place learning and it will pay off nicely.

• Learn to work well with others - In almostevery job, you will be asked to work with others.

• Network - Always talk to others in your indus-try or profession. This will help you to know whatskills you need and keep you on top of job oppor-tunities.

The graduation parties are over, you've moved out of yourdorm, and reality is beginning to set in. The Real World. Notthe MTV reality TV show, but the actual real world. It's naturalto feel a little anxiety (or a lot!), but as with anything worthdoing, a solid plan is required. Though the highunemployment rate makes headlines, there are jobs to behad. There are opportunities out there and they'll go to thosewho position themselves properly in this ultra-competitive jobmarket.

Here are some things to consider as you begin your jobsearch:

Take stock of what you have to offer – Employers lookingto hire recent grads are not expecting you to have pages ofexperience. What they want to see is a well-rounded personwith a variety of transferable skills they've acquired thus far. What is a transferable skill? A transferable skill is an abilitylearned through life or work experience. For example -Managing time effectively, motivating others, being proficientin specific software applications. Make a list of everythingthat you have to offer a perspective employer. You'll use thelist when writing your resume.

Manage your expectations – High paying entry-level jobswith great perks and exciting responsibilities are rare. Morelikely, you'll be joining a company at the bottom, in a service, operations or sales role. These jobs are filled with greatlearning opportunities and are valuable far beyond yourstarting salary. Be open to these roles, it's the "foot in the door"that everyone tells you is so valuable.

Write a great resume – I've seen hundreds and hundreds ofresumes from recent grads in my career as a hiring manager. It's remarkable how many are poorly conceived and horriblywritten. This is your first chance to showcase yourself to anemployer. Anything less than stellar will likely go unnoticed or

be immediately eliminated. Make use of all the greatresources online and at your school's career center, to ensurethat your resume is well-written, properly formatted and currentin terms of style and content. Today's resumes tell employershow you can specifically add value to their team.

Think quality over quantity – Don't send your resume toevery company in the world. Your resume and cover lettershould be tailored to each job specifically, to show theemployer that you're interested in their company. A genericresume and cover letter will rarely if ever be noticed andconsidered.

Network, network, network – The classic job searchcliché, but it works. Everyone you know should know you'relooking for a job. Everyone in your network is a potentialresource. Don't be shy, but always be professional andrespect the time of those from whom you seek assistance.

Clean up your online identity – This is important. Mostrecruiters and employers will look for you online. Be sure toremove all the party pictures from Facebook, and adjust yourprivacy setting accordingly to prevent a "friend" from postingsomething that may not present you in the most positive light.A LinkedIn profile is a must. Google yourself, and see whatyou find. Ask yourself if you'd be comfortable if an employerfound the same thing.

Finding a job is a job, approach it as such. Have a plan foreach day. Set goals and exceed them. Be successful!

A recruiter once gave me anexcellent tip when she said to changemy resume every time I applied for ajob. Why I asked? She told me thatcompany recruiters will often use akeyword search to select thecandidates that they feel matches theposition. This keeps them from havingto sort through the hundreds ofresumes they receive. She said that ifthe resume does not have thekeywords that they look for, then theytypically go into the rejected pile.

Depending on the position you'reapplying for, you should use wordsthat will notify HR managers aboutyour qualifications. For example, ifyou're looking for a position as theVice President of an accountingcompany you might want to includewords such as:

- Tax Accounting

- Reconciliations

- Profit and Loss Statements

It can be very difficult to find a job intoday's economic climate, andlooking for high level or executivework requires a keen eye, and often,

knowing someone whose already inthe organization. After updating yourresume, send it to your friends in theindustry and see if they are able todirect it to the appropriate HR

managers.

If you're looking for a job as anadministrative assistant you should usethe following words when updatingyour resume:

- Ability to type 80 wpm

- Microsoft Office

- Mac office

- Reception

- Phone support

No matter the type of work you'relooking for make sure you ask pastcolleagues or friends if they know ofany open positions within theircompanies. It's always an excellent

decision to put your feelers out andsee what kind of work is available. And always change-up your resumeto meet the requirements of the job. Itmay be a entry-level position, but as

long as you can turn it into somethingdown the road, it may be worthlooking into.

Tips for Working with KeywordSearch Software

Many companies will use a type ofsoftware that identifies keywords inresumes. But what can you do to beatthese machines?

Revise your resume so it includeskeywords included in the jobdescription during your opening. Takefor example, if the job descriptionsays, "Coordinate and developwebsites and blogs," your resume

must include keywords such as"websites" and "blogs". But only if youhave the experience, of course...

Update your multipurpose resumewith frequently used keywords so thatyou do not have to revise it every timeyou have another job interview. Oneidea is to revise it every six months inorder to stay current. Newerkeywords may be used in the future,so stay current with them.

Add the most important keywords toyour cover letter. Don't over do itthough. You just want to have a fewof the choice words that HR managersare looking for.

The origin of our word panicis derived from the Greek godPan. According to the Mer-riam-Webster New Book ofWord Histories, this lusty andmusically gifted god was alsoknown for giving great shoutsthat instilled fear into giantsas they battled the gods. Panwas worshipped in Athensbecause it was believed thathe instilled fear into thehearts of the Persians caus-ing them to flee the Battle ofMarathon. And that is wherewe get our word and idea ofpanic-any sudden andgroundless fear.
