2012 New Member Introductions - Continued
Ted Ebersold: Ted learned about MW from his barber and decided to come to the club meeting. Ted and has wife live in Southfield. Ted is a Ford retiree and he enjoys kayaking and tennis for recreation. Ted is looking forward to being a crewmember this summer on trips in the southeast Michigan area. He would like to fish for walleye or steelhead when there is a spot available. Ted, welcome to Metro West!
Tom Peters: Tom is a Livonia resident and should have no problem getting to the meet-ings. He introduced to Metro West at the Ultimate Fishing Show. Tom is single but has taken his girlfriend fishing and she seemed to have enjoyed it. Tom said “I would like to learn more about fishing myself. I have been into it for about 4 years now. How do I go about becoming a crew member for outings? I usually work during the week but I take time off in the warmer months for fishing and just doing stuff outdoors. I have never caught a salmon in my life, but my parents own a house in Port Austin, and they come through there in early autumn. I’ve been to Flat Rock and fished the river a
little but its usually crammed with other guys, I have caught Walleye out of there, and Curtis Lake in Northville.” Tom added “I my parents are currently living in the Thumb, and I have two brothers, Matt and Joe. Matt likes to fish as well. ... I usually go fishing about 3 or 4 times a week. I like to look for bodies of water on Google Maps and drive there and fish. I think some of the spots i have found are hidden gems. My favorite fishing hole right now is Curtis Lake in North-ville. I can hardly keep count on my hands how many species of fish are in there.” Tom, welcome to Metro West! Bring your friends and family to the meetings.
Russell Napp: Russ and wife Barbara live in Romeo! Russ is sponsored by Martin Van Fossan. Captain Russ has a 22’ Proline and will be fishing with us this summer! We have to get Russ over to Erieau to give the Lake Erie Steelhead a try. Russ has lots of fishing experience that he is willing to share with the group when we all get together on the water. Welcome, Russ and Barbara!
Evan Clark: Evan lives in Northville and is sponsored by friend and fellow fisherman, Larry Tabaka! Evan has a 19’ boat and will be fishing with us in some of the tournaments. We will look forward to meeting Evan on the water and learning more about him over the coming months! Evan, Welcome to Metro West!

The Alternative’s View of The Farm Steelhead Tournament on the Manistee Feb 9 – 12, 2012 Captain Mark Davis has a new drift boat! It is RED with a little White. Mark is THINKING about naming it Bob or Bob-ber; I like THE BOBBER. Mark got his new boat from member Jim Chamberlin and has worked for the last month learning how to handle/operate/equip his new toy. He had several hours in Ohio with Jim and three outings on the Hu-ron River with wife Caryn and friend Fred Bolton to get ready for this weekend on the Manistee. Captain Mark and I left early Thursday morning and headed to The Farm. We arrived about noon and got our room selected and the car unpacked. THEN we were off to Bear Creek launch about 15 miles away. It was a beautiful sunny 35 degree day. What more could you want? The little out-board that could – DID. We headed up steam to find our first spot – 200 yards away. We set up for a long drift down toward the launch and got five lines set and working. Good practice run. We then moved up the river to a good looking spot and started our five rod drift from the right side hole across to the left hand hole. Fish-On! I grabbed the rod and Mark dropped the chain a bit to stop the boat. I handed him the rod and he fought the steelhead and we landed his FIRST FISH on The Bobber!! The Skunk is Out of the BOAT! After a couple hours we headed back to The Farm with our story and our first fish! It was a 5.6 lbs steelhead! Smiles all around! Captain Mark told his story and showed his fish. Lance Hinatsu, put the blood of the fish on Mark’s forehead for good luck!! We sure want more luck! Lance is a veteran drift boat captain and has fished the Manistee for 31 years. He had advice and council each day to help us to be better drift boat fishermen. Thanks Lance! Friday morning we were at Bear Creek launch by 10 am. It was 18 degrees and a bit windy with snow. Not nice! Off we went up the river a bit farther to find a few new holes. We worked our way down the river and backed slowly into a deep hole. We lost a nice steelhead (could see the tail during the fight) when the line broke (10 lbs test); it was taking line slowly when the fight ended. We lost small steelhead a few minutes later when it quickly got off the hook during the fight. We moving back to our hole of yesterday – a strike. Fish On! My turn to fight the fish! A beautiful Steelhead was landed! This one was 7.6 pounds and a lot of fun – for me! Yes, it was cold! Captain Mark did an out-standing job controlling the boat and learning how to put the lures in place. Only 30 years of experience to go until he can call this EASY. The anchor rope continued to freeze mak-ing it difficult to move the anchor on command. Back at the Farm we told our stories and got more friendly advice. Lance agreed we needed 10 lbs line for this river and Mark re-strung the reels to be ready for bigger fish during the tournament tomorrow! Also, we learned we do not need swivels on lures that do not rotate – like the flat fish we were us-ing. OH, Yes! We were using UV Flat Fish lures today.
Saturday morning it was bitter cold again – 13 degrees and snow today. Off to Bear Creek launch to try our favorite holes again! We launched at 10 am but not until we got the waterline defrosted! Captain Mark worked on his little engine and made it work again! We moved 200 yards up river and made our run down the deep water. There was trouble in river city when the anchor rope kept freezing and delaying the release that should slowed us down. We were moving at the right speed to back the fish into the long jam when I called out Fish On! This was a fun fight with a very nice fish! This should be Mark’s fish but he had trouble stopping the boat before we got to the log jam. He finally succeeded just in time to net the big male steelhead – hooked jaw and all! We fished long and hard the rest of the day in cold, windy, snowy weather with no additional hits. Controlling the boat was very difficult in the
low temps but Captain Mark kept us out of trouble and fishing most of the time! The steelhead weighed in at 10 lbs and was 30.75 inches to win the tournament and Big Fish prize! Captain Mark and I split the prize – it is a team sport! Captain Mark had a very heavy work out for three days and learned a lot from our friends at The Farm! Thanks to All! Mark, thanks for the experience! Submitted by Rookie Drift Boat Angler, Henry Nabors.
