Join David Finckel and Wu Han on a spectacular journey to Russia and a week in dazzling St. Petersburg this fall. David and Wu Han join other Music@Menlo and Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center musicians for private concerts in three exquisite venues plus a concert open to the public in the city’s oldest concert hall. St. Petersburg: the evocative Venice of the North. Founded only in 1703 by Peter the Great—New York was already seventy-seven years old—and built to be a very European capital of the Empire, St. Petersburg today carries itself with serenity and grace as the cultural heart of Russia, a fountainhead of Russian literature, music and dance. The city grew up on the banks of the Neva River created by Italian and French architects. Exploring its principal sites we’ll stroll through the superlative collections of the Hermitage Museum, arguably the most beautiful art museum in the world, visit backstage at the Mariinsky Theatre, glide along the city’s canals in our own boat, and sample its fine cuisine including our own Taste of Russia culinary adventure. Best of all we’ll hear superb chamber works in remarkable concert halls: the Glinka Academic Capella was built as a choral hall in the 1780s—Glinka and Rimsky-Korsakov performed there; the superb wood-carved hall of the House of Composers hosted Dimitri Shostakovich, the Union’s President in the 1960s; at the sumptuous Yusupov Palace, home of one of tsarist Russia’s wealthiest private citizens Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood Tour Cost: $8,350, double occupancy, ground only. Tour limited to 25 participants.
