OUR ADJUDICATORS

CAROLINE CLEMMO was awarded a piano scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music where she won many prizes for both solo and ensemble playing. As a chamber musician she collaborated with many instrumentalists and singers and became a founder member of the Hartley Piano Trio, which gained international recognition by its concert and festival appearances, broadcasts and numerous recordings, including the complete trios of Spohr. While also performing concertos and giving recitals as a soloist Caroline derives particular pleasure from the field of chamber music. She has covered an extremely wide repertoire, ranging from the classics and romantics to complex twentieth century works. In addition to this wide range, collaboration with Evelyn Glennie has resulted in performance of percussion-and-piano repertoire. Her many activities have led to numerous London concerts,

regular broadcasts and invitations to major festivals. An important part of her work is the celebrated duo with Anthony Goldstone, described in Gramaphone as “a dazzling husband and wife team”. They are critically acclaimed for their pioneering broadcasts and CD recordings, including the seven-CD cycle of the complete original piano duets of Schubert. Their BBC broadcasts have often included first hearings of unjustly neglected works and they have built up an international following. As a teacher, Caroline is experienced in advanced tuition, with former pupils pursuing music studies in prestigious London instructions and at Oxford University. Adjudication (including BBC Young Musician, International Young Concert Artists etc.), coaching (various summer schools) and examining (for the Associated Board) also form part of her varied career.

STEVEN ROBERTS is Musical Director of Sing Live UK, one of the country’s largest independent adult singing organisations, as well as being Conductor and Musical Director of Altrincham Choral Society, Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir and Honley Male Voice Choir. He is also an adjudicator member of The British and International Federation of Festivals and regularly adjudicates throughout the United Kingdom as well as being a music mentor for Music for Youth. He was Head of Performing Arts and Music at Barnsley College and has also been conductor of the Dodworth and Skelmanthorpe Male Voice Choirs, the Allendale Chamber Orchestra, the Liverpool Welsh Choral Union. He has also been Chorus Master with The Huddersfield Choral Society, for concerts with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Jose Carreras, for ‘The Magic of Queen’ and the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), and for rock classics concerts with the Hallé orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He is in demand as a choral and voice specialist, but studied piano, brass and voice

and has equal extensive experience in each field. He has led choral days and workshops every year since 1993 and continues to inspire singers throughout the country. His work with Sing Live has included concerts with all of the UK based companies and has seen him conduct at some of the countries most prestigious concert halls in the UK. Steven regularly appears on regional and national radio promoting concerts and talking about the benefits of singing. He has also trained singers to appear in concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and the Odyssey arena, Belfast as well as the FM Hallam Arena in Sheffield. He has been privileged to conduct Sing Live in The College Gardens of Westminster Abbey for The Lady Taverners, in St Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City, St Mark’s Basilica, Venice as well as in Florence, Sorrento, Amalfi, Milan and Austria Steven is proud to be a member The Lords Taverners – the cricketing charity that raises money to give ‘young people, particularly with special needs, a sporting chance’.

MARGARET SMITH Born and brought up in Skipton, North Yorkshire, and an enthusiastic participant in local festivals from a very young age, MARGARET SMITH LRAM. GRSM studied the piano, initially with Dame Fanny Waterman, and then at the Royal Academy of Music, with the violin as an additional first study. She spent many years in musical education with both singers and instrumentalists as Director of Music at one of the most prestigious Girls’ Schools in Yorkshire, where pupils won many prizes in national and local music competitions. For 14 years, she was a Moderator for the composition and performance elements of GCSE Music. She has maintained her private piano practice, teaching to an advanced level and has always had a passionate interest in vocal music and choral work in particular. She was the founder-

conductor of the Chippendale Singers, a chamber choir with a wide-ranging repertoire, currently enjoying success in the Yorkshire area. Her many associations with choral societies have resulted in performances of oratorio, cantatas and concert versions of opera, working with both adults and children. Her enthusiasm for the Festival movement and its value in musical education has resulted in an ever increasing number of invitations to adjudicate at festivals throughout the UK including the Channel Islands and Northern Ireland. In addition to a busy musical life she enjoys walking, reading, concert and theatre going and is also an enthusiastic equestrian and a follower of English cricket! Margaret Smith is an adjudicator member of the British & International Federation of Festivals.

MELANIE SPANSWICK is a concert pianist and author. She studied at the Royal College of Music in London where she won many prizes before graduating with MMus (RCM), GRSM (Hons), ARCM and a Dip RCM. A busy concert schedule has taken Melanie all around the world and she has played at many prestigious venues in the UK. She has broadcast on radio and television and made two solo recordings, ‘Liebestraume’ and ‘Another Stage’. Highlights include performing for the Queen Mother and the Queen and Prince Consort of Denmark as well as working with conductors, Andrew Constantine and Sir Andrew Davis amongst others. Festival appearances have included Concert Halls in the UK and Canada where she performed the North American premiere of Liszt’s Bunte Reihe at the International Liszt Festival in Hamilton (Ontario, Canada). Melanie has played for numerous concert societies and universities and has given over 800 solo recitals on luxury cruise liners including the QE2 and QM2. Melanie has taught the piano at Reading University, Royal College of Music Junior

Department, Blackheath Conservatoire, and has recently coached piano classes at the Overseas Malaysian Winter Piano Academy held at the Yehudi Menuhin School. She has examined for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, is an adjudicator for the British and International Federation of Music Festivals and recently adjudicated at the 65th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. The Piano Education Project is a series of short vlogs (or video-blogs) which appear on Melanie’s blog site (ClassicalMel’s Piano and Music Education Blog) and YouTube. It focuses on studying the piano from the beginning and contains an interview series called Classical Conversations. This features established artists who talk about their musical education and work. Melanie regularly writes articles and blogs on piano playing and is currently writing a series of articles on piano technique for. Her first book, So You Want To Play The Piano? is a beginner’s guide; everything you need to know before you start to learn. It has been critically acclaimed and is published by Indepenpress.
