T HE strategic plan recently adopted by the Heritage Fund Board of Directors states that we can do a better job of: • Expanding and Deepening our Donor Base • Communicating our Message • Proactively targeting areas of the community where we can invest to create lasting positive change We’ve made some good progress, adding 302 new donors in 2016. We listened to millennials and emerging leaders and have expanded our committees to include their enthusiastic participation. Working collaboratively with local experts at Healthy Communities, Community Education Coalition, Chamber of Commerce, Columbus Area Arts Council, City of Colum- bus and United Way, the HFBC Board adopted five Areas of Impact that will focus proactive grant activity on measur- able improvements in the following areas; Youth Develop- ment, Innovation and Creativity, Neighborhood Revitaliza- tion, Substance Abuse and Welcoming Community. We look forward to keeping you updated on that work. Our communication improvements have moved more slowly but have revealed some important information about how Heritage Fund is viewed by the community we serve. We heard positives like trustworthy, compas- sionate and knowledgeable. But we also heard stodgy, elitist, and traditional. Using that feedback, we defined how Heritage Fund should be perceived. 1. Bartholomew County’s charity of choice because donors (of all sizes) always come first. 2. Franklin Square is a welcoming, approachable and vibrant place. 3. All our work reflects a dedication to excellence, trust- worthiness and compassion. 4. A proactive and forthcoming source of knowledge that provides a long-term benefit for the community. What sparked your interest in helping us with Grant A Wish?

I saw a Facebook ad come across my newsfeed one day and thought it would be a great opportunity to partner with Heritage Fund to raise money by using social media. I had recently attended the EcO conference at The Commons and was looking for a chance to combine the public, private, and social sector to accomplish something I’d never seen done on social media.

What is it about social media that inspires people to give?

I think people responded so well on social media because unlike other “telethons” they were a part of the audience and we were able to interact with them in real time. People in Columbus give when they see a need in our community. We all want Columbus to continually get better for future generations. Being able to see, hear and talk with guests helped build a relationship with the organizations and present needs in a tangible way.

How do you think Heritage Fund helps people be more philanthropic?

I think Heritage Fund allows people to financially partner with their community to ensure that our community will be able to live up to the vision that families of our past dreamed of for us. As Mr. Miller once said, “We want Columbus to be the best community of its size in the country.” (Paraphrased) Heritage Fund allows people to invest in our community to make sure this happens.

We are pleased to announce 2016 was our best year ever for the Grant A Wish holiday gift-giving program. A big thank you to every-one who participated and title sponsorship from Elwood Staffing, assisted by MainSource Bank. Also contribut-ing to our success this year was a promotion of the program by Josh Burnett and the #celebratecolumbus show, in which we exceeded our goal of raising $24,000 in 24 hours live on Facebook.

Elwood Staffing support enables record year!
