A Letter from the President’s Desk Dear Minnesota Music Therapists, A happy spring to you all! Since your last newsletter, we have welcomed in a new board and I am honored to have taken the post of president. Jennifer Hicks, our new Public Relations Chair, has done a fabulous job getting our biographies out so that you can get to know us. If you did not get a chance to read these posts, our webmaster, Christy Holland, has created links on our website for you to read all about us. Since convening in January, Vice President Kendri Scarborough has helped put together an exciting line up of speakers for our spring conference – Wellness for the Music Therapist: Mind, Body, Voice on Saturday, May 7 at Mount Hope Lutheran Church in Bloomington. We look forward to learning about how to take care of the bodies and voices we use daily in our work. At the business meeting portion of this conference, we will take a vote on our new Mission and Vision statements. Two years ago, MTAM asked you, our members, to share with us what we do well as an organization, what we value, and areas where we could grow. From your responses, the MTAM board worked throughout last year to create updated vision and mission statements for our organization based on your responses. We hope that these statements will help clarify who we are, guide us where we are going, and aid us in partnering with other professional groups. You can see the proposed changes on page 4. With the steps we have taken in receiving our 501(c)3 status and putting together a mission statement, we are becoming a more mature organization. We will continue to follow this path later this summer by creating a more thorough budget, based on our mission. In addition to our conferences, much of our funds will be put right back into our membership through our many scholarships. Be sure to check out the website under “Membership Benefits” for the full list of opportunities and application procedures. (Scholarships are also listed on page 12 of this newsletter.) We also want to continue broadening our scope and create connections with other professionals. We will be showing our solidarity for our neighbors at the University of North Dakota as they fight to keep their music therapy program at our upcoming spring conference. In addition, we hope to put together a fundraising effort for organizations like Blue Star Connection this summer. The board is cooking up some fabulous ideas and I am inspired by what is ahead for MTAM!

Another huge step forward for our profession here in Minnesota has come through the tireless efforts of Todd Schwartzberg and Melissa Hirokawa. Together with our Minnesota State Task Force, they have worked to educate our Minnesota legislators on the importance of music therapy and the need for professional recognition. I, along with the board, am so appreciative of their efforts this year. It was an honor to represent Minnesota at the Great Lakes Regional Conference in Indianapolis last week. Your work in our state gives us a lot to be proud of! All the best, Claire Claire M Klein, MT-BC Hospice and Palliative Care Music Therapist President, Music Therapy Association of Minnesota

Attention Music Therapy Business Owners! Submitted by Melissa Hirokawa, M.M., MT-BC The Minnesota Music Therapy Business Owners group (MN MTBO) was created in December to foster collaboration, enhance communication, provide support and guidance, expedite placement of referrals between music therapists in private practice in MN, and provide continuing education related to business ownership in music therapy. The group is open to those who are the primary owner(s) of a private practice serving clients in MN. We have had two meetings so far with 11-13 people present. In addition, we have a MN MTBO Facebook group; and ongoing spreadsheet to help identify business needs and successes, areas and populations served, and organizational information. Our next meeting will be June 17th 7-9 in the Roseville Room at J. Arthur Coffee: 2441 Rice Street Roseville, MN 55113. If you own a private practice in MN we would love to see you there! Feel free to contact Melissa Hirokawa with any questions: [email protected]

Minnesota Licensure Task Force Update We want to first thank our entire task force team: Amy Furman, Barb Else, Claire Klein, Glen Helgeson, Maggie Sonsteby, Mark Burnett, Melissa Hirokawa, Mike Silverman, and Todd Schwartzberg – it takes a village and it is a pleasure and privilege to get to work alongside this wonderful group of colleagues. Moreover, we thank you all – our colleagues across MN – for your on-going contributions and support of both HF 2366 and SF 2197, our music therapy licensure bills.

This legislative session continued the great work that has occurred over the last several years. Our chief authors, Representative Jerry Newton and Senator John Hoffman, worked tirelessly and collaboratively to move our bill. In February we had the opportunity to testify before the House Subcommittee on Licensure, but were stalled, primarily due to a shortened legislative session. As a result of this hearing, we offered an amendment that was amenable to

those in opposition. This amendment addressed the excellent question of the burden to the state and/or citizens for education, training, and continuing education requirements for music therapy licensure. We feel that this amendment demonstrates that HF 2366 does not add or impose additional continuing education or training requirements on individuals who seek to practice music therapy in the state. We obtained wonderful support from our community – 12 letters of support from organizations, 3 from family members and 15 from MT-BCs. These letters and the many calls, emails, and in-person meetings that occurred helped us maintain and nurture invaluable relationships with our legislators that will prove to be crucial in our on-going strive towards licensure. On Tuesday, March 15th, we held our 5th Hill Day. It was a great experience and it could not have been successful without the time and dedication from the 20 music therapists and two music therapy advocates who came to speak with our legislators. This year, we had music therapists come from all over the state including St. Cloud, Rochester, and Duluth to meet with 35 legislators, the majority of whom are supportive of our efforts with moving this bill forward. In fact, some decided to sign on as co-authors! We had 5 co-authors sign onto our bill--Representatives Carlson, Lillie, Nornes, Erhardt, and Senator Dziedzic along with our two main authors, Senator Hoffman and Representative Newton. In addition to the meetings, we also provided informational folders to all 201 legislators, educating them about the wonderful work we do as music therapists! While we are currently stalled, our work is not done. The task force is currently assessing and planning for our next steps for the remainder of the current session, during the interim between this and the next session, and for next year’s legislative session.

We continue to need your help and will send updates as they occur. Thank you all again for all that you do. We look forward to our on-going collaborative work, as we strive towards licensure of board-certified music therapists in MN, thus providing greater protection for our clients (ensuring they receive MT from an MT-BC) and increased access to our services. Emma Vogel is originally from Huxley, Iowa. She started her music education at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa and then finished her music therapy coursework at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Throughout her college education she enjoyed being involved in concert and show choirs, jazz and concert bands, and playing organ for her grandparents’ church. In her free time she enjoys spending time with family and friends, cooking up new recipes, and practicing yoga. She is thrilled to be moving to Minneapolis and starting her internship at Park Nicollet Health Services in April. She is looking forward to being surrounded by so many people that will teach her so much and refining her skills during internship. After she completes her internship she hopes to continue working in the medical setting and eventually, would like to start a music therapy program in hospital without one.

Minnesota Internship Updates Park Nicollet Health Services Submitted by Dawn Miller, MT-BC, Music Therapy Internship Director

Nora Turnbloom (University of Minnesota) completed her internship in October 2015. Nora has created a new music therapy position at St. Therese long-term care in New Hope, Minnesota. Anna Eltringham (Ohio University) and Anne Goedtke (University of Minnesota) finished their internships in early January 2016.

Our 109th and 110th interns began on January 18, 2016. We welcomed Yue Wu (she goes by “Wu”) (Colorado State University) and Yinglan He (Ohio University). They are both originally from China. Continuing on until April 2016 are Natalie Young (Baldwin Wallace College in Ohio) and Stephanie Besaw (Wartburg College in Iowa). At the end of April 2016, Daveana Schieler (Indiana Purdue University Fort Wayne) and Emma Vogel (University of Iowa) will be starting their internships. In addition, Amanda “Mandi” Verstegen, a former music therapy intern who finished in April of 2015, has been hired to provide part time music therapy services at the Park Nicollet Burnsville and Maple Grove infusion centers, in addition to covering the maternity leave of Amy Madson, music therapist at Park Nicollet Melrose Eating Disorder Institute. Mandi will continue the good work of a pilot music therapy program that was started by Leanne Barck, another former intern, who is now working a full time music therapy position at Park Nicollet Methodist home hospice. With the addition of Mandi, there are now 6 music therapists at Park Nicollet. Woodbury Health Care Center Submitted by Erin Heidemann, MT-BC, Music Therapy Internship Director

The music therapy internship program at Woodbury Health Care Center was founded by Jessica DeVillers, M.A., MT-BC in 2011. Ashley Holten, MT-BC took over as director when Jessica moved on to a new opportunity. Ashley supervised one intern and then also moved on to a new opportunity. In 2015, Angela

Johnson, MT-BC and Erin Heidemann, MT-BC took over directorship of the program. Our internship program encompasses transitional care, long-term care, and memory care. Interns receive a wide range of experience with residents in all settings at Woodbury Health Care Center. We

Page 16: Music Therapy Association of Minnesotamusictherapymn.com/.../03/Spring-2016-MTAM-newsletter.pdf · 2018. 3. 22. · MTAM 2016 Fall Conference Registration Form Wellness for the Music

16

typically have two interns at a time for them to collaborate with one another and learn from each other. The interns co-lead/lead small and large music therapy groups and have their own 1:1 caseload for which they track progress in the residents medical records. Woodbury Health Care Center is unique, in that we have a large recreation therapy department as well as integrative therapy department that the interns get to collaborate and work closely with as part of a team. Interns experience working with residents who are on hospice and sometimes actively dying. We have a holistic approach to our program, and interns assess and treat the 6 areas of wellness (cognitive, physical, social, emotional, vocational, and spiritual). Under the supervision of Angela and Erin, two interns have graduated thus far, and both have obtained jobs in the geriatric setting. During the course of the program, there have been interns that have come from the University of Florida, University of Wisconsin-Eau Clare, University of Minnesota, Augsburg College, University of Iowa, and others. Below you will find comments from some of our interns about their experience at Woodbury Health Care Center: When I first began as an intern at WBHC, I was thrilled but also very nervous. However, once I met my supervisor as well as the other music therapists and recreation staff, I immediately felt like I was part of a team. The music therapy internship at WBHC not only helped me learn how to become a music therapist that utilizes a variety of skill sets but it also created many opportunities for me to create and develop my own ideas and interventions. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and I hope that interns continue to consider WBHC as a facility to learn and become a music therapist.

- Michaela Helms My music therapy internship at Woodbury Health Care Center is an experience I will never forget. The residents, residents’ families, and the staff taught me more then I ever thought my brain could handle! The amount of support I received from everyone was incredible and they were always willing to help. Through out the internship I gained confidence, found my creative side, and found that working as a music therapist in a geriatric setting is my calling. I am grateful for all the opportunities this internship gave me, and the support and guidance I received from supervisors and staff. This place will always hold a special place in my heart.

- Raina Gamble Angela and Erin are very passionate about music therapy and hope to pass that on to the interns. We strive to help each intern find their unique style in music therapy and guide them to their future as professional music therapists.
