I  hope  the  holidays  are  a  time  of  re;lection,  fellowship,  and  rejuvenation  for  everyone.    2018  can  be  your  best  year  yet!

Have  you  focused  your  priorities  for  your  studio  this  year?    Some  aspects  to  consider:

• What  is  your  ratio  of  teaching  time  dedicated  to  Technique,  Theory,  Repertoire,  and  Creative  Activities?

• Do  you  including  aural/rhythm/sight  reading  at  each  lesson?

• How  much  is  challenging  repertoire  versus  “one-‐week  pieces”?

• Do  you  include  creative  activities  such  as  improvising/composing,

• How  about  lead  sheet  playing?  • Do  you  incorporate  “games”  in

your  studio?  on-‐line  activities?                                    continued  on  next  page

(Con&nued  from  page  one:  Celeste)                  •    Challenges  between  students?

Do  you  have  a  set  curriculum  and  then  tweak  it  for  different  students?    Do  you  use  one  method  series,  or  a  variety  of  method  book  series?    I  use  a  few  because  I  don’t  want  to  hear  the  same  material  all  week,  every  week,  and  some  students  just  respond  better  to  one  format.

All  of  this  is  just  food  for  thought.    I  would  love  to  hear  your  thoughts,  or,  better  yet,  come  to  a  meeting  and  have  live  discussions  with  your  peers!

So  many  wonderful    activities  are  going  on.  I  would  like  to  give  a  giant  hug  and  shout  out  to  every  teacher  who  has  stepped  up  and  taken  a  role  in  helping  these  programs  continue.    You  are  my  inspiration!!!!    MTAC  Teachers  are  the  Best!!!

Happiest  of  New  Years  to  you,

Celeste

( Continued  from  page  one  :  Marine  )      Mariné Ter-Kazaryan – Soprano“A  Nightingale  Sang  on  Los  Feliz…”      This  is  how  Zen  Thompson,  music  critic  of  Los  Angeles  Times  described  Mariné  Ter-‐Kazaryan’s  ;irst  performance  in  the  United  States.    Ms.  Ter-‐Kazaryan  has  been  on  numerous  concert  tours  both  as  a  singer  and  a  pianist  to  different  cities  of  Armenia,  Soviet  Union,  Canada,  Mexico  and  the  United  States.  She  made  her  Armenia  Philharmonic  debut  at  the  age  of  5,  and  her  recordings  since  that  age  are  still  aired  on  the  Armenian  National  Radio.  She  has  received  warm  recognition  and  high  ratings  from  Soviet,  American,  Mexican  and  Armenian  music  critics  and  professionals.

She  is  an  honorary  member  of  the  Golden  Key  National  Honor  Society,  Pi  Kappa  Lambda  Music  Honor  Society,  and  is  af;iliated  with  NATS.  She  has  performed  many  voice  and  piano  solo  recitals,  as  well  as  had  performances  with  orchestras  such  as  the  Armenia  Philharmonic,  Riga  Philharmonic,  USC  Symphony,  Nayiri  Center  for  the  Arts  Orchestra  and  appearances  with  the  USC  Opera  and  Euterpe  Opera.    She  has  been  a  regular  solo  recitalist  on  Enlightenment  Music  Series  and  Classics  Become  Eclectic  concert  series.    Recently  she  was  the  featured  musical  artist  on  the  Life  Changes  radio  show  on  the  BBS  network,  where  she  gave  an  interview  and  a  live  performance.

Mariné  Ter-‐Kazaryan  is  a  performing  artist  who  searches  for  perfectionism  and  emotional  ful;illment.  She  strives  to  deliver  her  music  to  the  audience  with  a  high  professional  quality.  Being  exposed  to  the  audience  from  a  very  early  age  she  realizes  that  her  audience  has  to  go  home  with  his/her  emotional  spirit  uplifted.

The  application  and  $25  enrollment  fee  is  due  in  hand  on  or  by  Saturday,  January  20.    Schedules  will  be  out  by  Saturday,  January  27.    The  two  programs  are  at  10  a.m.  and  11:30  a.m.    Teachers  need  to  be  available  to  help  with  one  program.    If  you  cannot  help,  a  nonparticipation  fee  of  $25  needs  to  be  remitted.

Students  are  expected  to  dress  nicely,  per  the  branch  dress  code.    Memorization  is  required  for  all  disciplines,  except  winds,  per  CM  regulations.    An  original  score  must  be  provided,  with  measures  numbered,  in  order  for  the  judge  to  provide  detailed  and  useful  comments.

There  is  no  minimum  time,  but  maximum  song  length  should  be  no  greater  than  5  minutes.

If  you  have  any  other  questions,  please  feel  free  to  contact  me  at:

                                                                                   [email protected].

For  your  convenience,  the  application  is  available  in  both  the  newsletter  and  the  branch  website.    Many  students  enjoy  this  festival,  and  love  to  come  back  year  after  year.    If  you  haven't  already  started  this  tradition  with  your  students,  perhaps  this  is  the  year  to  start!
