During the beginning of our lives, we are all selfish. How many times do youremember saying “that‟s mine!” or “don‟t touch my toy!”? As we age, we ultimately

learn to think of others almost as much as ourselves. Some learn this in rather interestingways.

Cars were parked outside the household of a middle-aged Duncan and Audrey

Thatcher because it was a joyous occasion. Hazel, their youngest daughter, was about toget married (I‟m sure I forgot to tell you that Duncan and Audrey were blessed twicemore after the third book took place. Well, now you know) to a handsome astronomer.

The house was packed with friends and family that were enjoying the snacks and eachother‟s company.

Upstairs, Hazel was gazing at herself in the full-body mirror while Audrey wascombing her hair. Like the milestones in previous years, she was exited that this day had

finally come.

“I can‟t believe my littlest baby girl is tying the knot,” said Audrey with her British accent, “It almost makes it worth having that awful case of post-partum

depression after you were born.” “That‟s a little too much information, Mom,” said Hazel, who looked just like her

mother sans the British accent.

Adlai and Saul the bassala were in the small living room that was tucked into thecorner of the main floor. Adlai played the song Classical Gas with his acoustic guitar,

though his fingers hurt a bit from not using a pick. His little brother, Declan, was writingpoems on the other side of the couch using his interesting vocabulary and young

imagination. Histadpole person,

Tobiii, was at thefoot of the couch

staring at his

human partner‟s

emerginggreatness.

“What

song is that?”asked Declan, “I

like it.” Adlai

wasn‟t what you

would call a “nice boy” most of the time. He would often pick on those who weresmaller and, in his mind, more annoying.

“Classical Gas,” replied Adlai, “And here‟s some of my gas.” Adlai then liftedhis right leg and emitted a noisy evacuation toward Declan. Declan left the room

disgusted at Adlai‟s bullish behavior. “Tofu hasn‟t let me down yet.” He kept playing

the song thinking that nobody else was going to bother him, but he couldn‟t help butnotice that his foolish monster was sitting beside him trying to read a book. Saul?Reading a book? This he had to question.

“What are you reading?” he asked. Saul thebassala stuck his nose further into the reading

material.

“I‟m looking for Waldo,” he said, “He‟s

bound to be here somewhere…” “Saul, that‟s a PB Teen catalogue and

you‟re reading it upside down.” “That‟s the thing, Adlai. Waldo could be

anywhere – Hawaii, the Middle Ages, the moon –  he could even be with us as we speak.” Saul

shifted his eyes around the room, making sure that no man wearing red stripes was withineyesight.

“Alright, but make sure you don‟t act like an idiot during the wedding.”

Hazel‟s fiancé, Avon, wanted to get away from the crowded household to be byhimself. He wasn‟t in his fancy groom outfit; since men don‟t take as long as women to

get ready, he was still in his slightly wrinkled good shirt. He found a nice place outside

where the grass wasn‟t trimmed and the bushes were

thick. He cleared his voice and took a deep breath. Outcame a slightly cracked musical note of which he

would‟ve been ashamed if he hadn‟t been alone. Hereluctantly cleared his voice again, thinking that would

improve his singing ability. He attempted to belt out aG note, but ended up sounding like a giraffe with

pneumonia. Delilah was outside enjoying the autumnair when she heard the unattractive noise.

“Hello, Avon.” Avon was embarrassed to seethat there were ears outside to hear his poor voice.

“Delilah, I want to let you in on a little secret,”said Avon. He nervously stretched out the collar on his

shirt before revealing the rest. “After the weddingtonight, I want to sing a romantic song to your aunt.

The problem is that I don‟t know how to sing.” “Oh, yes,” said Sasha the nixie, “Some human

males sing to a female in an attempt to woo her. I think it‟s called… „sera-noo-ding.‟”

“As you‟re future niece, it is my obligation to teach you how to sing.” Without

even trying, Avon found a teacher, albeit a young one. “The first thing you should knowis that you have two voices: your head voice and your chest voice. Here is my head

voice.” She then sang a beautiful, operatic high C. Avon clapped and was amazed that avoice like that could come from a mere child. “Here is my chest voice.” She then sang a

beautiful C that was lower on the scale, as if she was using her talking voice to sing thenote.

Adlai became bored with playing his guitar, so he engaged in small talk with his

monster, who still had his nose in the magazine.“You‟re usually stupid, Saul,” said Adlai (a weird way to start a conversation),“But you kicked that other monster‟s butt this afternoon.” Saul the bassala started

reminiscing about the late morning, when hewas involved in a big battle…

Kids of all ages were standing in a circle and observing the monster fight thattook place at the local park. Saul the bassala was battling an antenni (an intergalactic

lizard monster with an antenna on its head) that was partnered with Riley, a girl fromAdlai‟s school. The antenni came very close to winning; she only needed to attack Saul a

few more times.

“Static attack !” she announced. With her lizard powers, tiny sparks raced out

from her antenna, resulting in miniscule shocks that one would get from touching a cardoor. It was Saul‟s turn next, but he needed an advantage. Any advantage would do. Inhis near unconsciousness, he remembered that he had with him a purple power-up ring

that he found on Duncan and Audrey‟s kitchen table. He took it out of the pocketbeneath his fur and put it to use. When he focused his energy on the ring, it started

glowing. Eventually, the glowing stopped and the ring disappeared. The ring‟s power raised Saul‟s attack power for the next move.

“You want some of this?” he asked sharply, “Well, do you?!” He showed hisvicious fangs, grabbed the antenni close to him, and took a huge bite out of her neck. By

doing this, Saul absorbed her remaining health points, healing him slightly and makingher drop to the ground like a fallen brick. The crowd knew that there was no hope left for

the antenni, so they counted backwards.“Five… four… three… two… one…” they shouted. After number one, they

cheered for Saul, for he had won the match. Riley rushed over to her monster to cradleher and keep her from being further harmed. Adlai gave his monster a congratulatory

head rub for his efforts. The antenni opened her eyes a bit and looked at her partner.“You owe me big for this,” she said.

“How about a vanilla milkshake?” asked Riley in a soothing tone. “Yeah, that sounds good.”

“That was a good strategy, man,” said Adlai ending the flashback, “A good

strategy. Where did you get that ring anyway?”

“I found it on the table. Your family probably wouldn‟t mind that I took it, since

they can‟t use it for anything in particular.” Adlai let go of his acoustic guitar in shock.

“What‟s wrong? Did you see the ghost of Rick James? Because you look super-freakedout.”

“You took THE ring, as in, the ring that Avon used to propose to Aunt Hazel?”

Saul the bassala gulped. He didn‟t think the ring was that special to the engaged couple. “Was that ring supposed to be… special… to them or something?” Adlai looked

as though he had steam coming out of his ears.

“HOW COULD YOU DO THAT YOU STUPID, FREAKING IDIOT?!” He

yelled so loud that the entire block of houses could hear his booming voice. A car alarmeven went off.

“Did you hear that? Somebody‟s stealing a car.” Adlai knew that the tone of hisvoice was suspiciously loud, so he continued his venting in an aggravated whisper.

“Avon went through so much trouble to get that ring and if he finds out that youdid something to it, he‟ll totally kill me!”

“Kill you?” “Yes! Because I‟m your tamer and I‟m responsible for your idiotic actions!”

Saul‟s ears, which were usually perky, sulked as he looked toward the ground. Hewhimpered a little, like most dogs when they‟re scolded. Adlai felt so frustrated and

afraid at that moment. He wanted nothing to do with his monster. He sighed and shook his hands to get out the excess pressure building up because he wasn‟t allowed to yell.

“You‟re on your own man. You‟re the idiot who used up the ring‟s power and you‟re theidiot who‟s going to get a new one.” Adlai sat up and left the room to eat some hors

d'oeuvres and forget about this incident. Saul lay on the floor and wished there wassomething he could do. Fate had put him in a tight corner.

“Well… my reason for using the ring was more important! I had to win that

 battle!”

Meanwhile, Delilah was still outside teaching Avon how to sing. He didn‟t

improve since they started.“No, Avon,” said Delilah, “You need to control your breathing. Wait until you‟re

finished singing the current line of the song before you take your next breath.” “I think you should just forget it,” said Avon in despair, “You‟re a great teacher

and all, but I was never meant to sing.” Delilah was actually happy to hear Avon‟swillingness to give up.

“Finally, you admit it. Now excuse me while I go join the others and munch onsome finger sandwiches.”

Saul the bassala was in the yard urinating on the side of a tree. Avon wanted todiscuss his problems with somebody, anybody. Before speaking to Saul, he sighed to

signify that he wasn‟t feeling too happy.

“Do you mind?” asked Saul with his right leg in the air, “I‟m doing stuff.”

“Sorry, it‟s just that I‟m stuck between a rock and a hard place right now.” “Right now, I‟m between a tree and guy.”

“No, what I mean is that I have a problem.” “Tell me about it.”

“I want to sing this beautiful song to my wife-to-be after the wedding tonight, but

I don‟t know how to sing. I think I‟m going to try plan B.” What Avon said positively

encouraged Saul to ask what he had up his sleeve.

“What is this „Plan B‟ you speak of?” “I want to go to the Meon Desert and find Apollo, the spirit of the continent. Each continent in the Rhythm and Melody World has a guardian spirit. Legend has it

that Apollo can grant one wish and only one wish to everyone he meets.” Somethingamazing sparked in Saul‟s head; he was actually getting a good idea! He could go with

Avon to encounter Apollo and his wish could be for another power-up ring for the

wedding. It wouldn‟t matter if Avon finds out that he used the ring because by then, he

would‟ve been granted a new one. “I‟d like to join you on your voyage for a singing voice.” As much as Avon

wanted something to impress the love of his life, he didn‟t want to subject somebodyelse‟s monster to danger. He wanted nothing harmed on this adventure.

“Are you sure?” “As sure as the autumn day is long!”

“You mean „short.‟ Days in autumn are generally short. I‟m an astronomer, so Iknow.”

“Yeah, yeah. Apparently, you‟re also a major in the field of show-off-ology.”The groom and the bassala left the premises and started on their way to the portal station

to fulfill their obligations. The only problem was that they didn‟t tell anybody first.

Little Declan grew sick and tired of the crowd of happy people and of Adlaiconstantly harassing him, so he wanted to escape to a new place along with Avon and

Saul. He ran after them clutching Tobiii the tadpole person and made himself noticed bybreathing heavily while doing so.

“I wanna come, too!” he said. He stopped and put his hand on his knee to catchhis breath.

“Calm down, champ,” said Avon, “You can come with us.” “That‟s great! I wrote this song for you guys today and I want to share it with you

first.” Declan was thrilled that he could finally get his work out into the open. He couldalready sense a song-writing career in his future.

“Let‟s wait until we get to the desert.” Declan felt unsure about going to a far-off desert, but then he figured that any place was better than the household at that moment.

After the trip to the portal station, the group found themselves in the Meon Desert,

the largest desert in the Rhythm and Melody World. Ahead of them were sand dunes andlarge rocks with starlight beating down on them. The air felt cool and almost refreshing

because the sun was hiding all the way on the other side of the planet. At that moment,Avon wasn‟t so focused on finding Apo llo as he was focused on the night sky.

“Wow,” he said, “This night sky is amazing!” Declan and Toby the tadpoleperson looked up, too; it HAD to be amazing since an older person said it was. Up in the

sky were stars in neat arrangements; some were rather close while others were millions of

light years away. “I know all about earth‟s constellations, but these are ones that I‟m stilllearning about.”

“Will you guys PLEASE stop gazing at the stars and get a move on?” asked Saulthe bassala impatiently.

“I apologize. It‟s just that the night sky interests me so.”

Back at home, Hazel was sitting on the couch and fiddling with a squishy ball

because she was nervous. She didn‟t feel like eating

because her goal was to have her baby blue dress asclean as possible for the wedding. Next to her was her

older sister, Melanie (born two years after the thirdbook took place). She was obsessing over her nails,

which were long and perfect, and made sure none of them were jagged. She couldn‟t help but feel sullen as

she was shaping her nails with the emery board.“What‟s wrong, Mel?” asked Hazel. Melanie

stopped filing her nails and put her emery board away.

“It just feels weird that after this day, I‟ll be theonly Thatcher child that‟s never been married.”

“You‟re sad about that? Some people wouldKILL not to be in a commitment. You should cherish this part of your life. You might

not have found the right guy yet, but there are plenty of eligible men out there. You‟llfind the perfect one sometime.” Mel looked up at her little sister with a hopeful grin on

her face. She felt a wee bit better. “Or maybe you just don‟t wanna admit that you‟reugly and you have the personality of a slice of bread.”

The next thing Hazel knew, she was alone in the living room with the bowl of bean dip turned upside down on her head.

“Come back, Mel!” she shouted, “It slipped out, I swear!”

Avon and Declan had been in the desert for quite a while. As the night took over, the winds picked up and messed up their hair. They and their monsters decided to seek

shelter in a rocky cave that was located by two cacti. Tobiii the tadpole person had toblink several times to get the sand out of his eyes since he had no fingers.

“So how do you spell your monster‟s name?” asked Avon, “T-O-B-Y or T-O-B-I?”

“Actually, Tobiii‟s name is spelled with three „I‟s.‟” “Why would you do that ?”

“To help him see well.” Avon laughed at Declan‟s cute answer. Saul the bassalalay down on the hard, rocky ground and closed his eyes like any hound dog would.

“Can I hear that song you wrote?” Declan took a folded piece of paper out of hispocket and opened it so his large, child-like handwriting could be revealed to his eyes and

help him remember.

“I didn‟t write music to it, but here it goes…”

I’m thinking of a woman who’s young, pretty, and bright

Whose smiling face I am happy to see every night

 And then you came along

“That‟s a nice first verse,” said Avon, “But is there more?”

“More?”

“Those three lines shouldn‟t be the entire song. You should write some moreverses. You know – maybe stick a chorus and a bridge in there.” Declan folded up thepiece of paper and felt a little ungrateful.

“I didn‟t think I was finished with the song anyway. Do you have any ideas?” “I‟m not good at writing poems. I think you should be the one who thinks up the

rest of it.”

“Well I can‟t think of anything!” Declan panicked. The wedding was tonight and

he couldn‟t have felt more uninspired when it came to writing a beautiful song. He feltrushed in his effort. To prevent Declan from throwing a temper tantrum, Avon made a

small suggestion for the song‟s lyrics. “How about writing a line comparing her to the stars?” At that moment, Declan

stopped freaking out and started to listen.“The stars?” said Saul the bassala as he lifted up his head, “Do you ever not think

of your day job?” “That‟s why I do what I do. The night sky has a magical feel to it, especially if

you‟re out in the middle of nowhere, like we are now.” Declan dedicated the rest of histime in the cave to deep thought about the next lines in his supposedly beautiful song.

His deep thought didn‟t last very long, since time was a factor.“We should get going, champ.” The group quickly left the cave in search of the

continent‟s spirit, but Declan kept thinking as he kept his pace with Avon and Saul.

Hours and hours passed and everybody who was at the household gathered at aCatholic church that, like a lot of modern places of worship, had unique architecture.

People were excited and all dressed up, chatting up a storm about the reception and whowould catch the bouquet. Everyone was happy except Hazel, who had not seen her

fiancée since she was back at the house. She hadn‟t said a thing to anybody and castherself out of the social gathering to stare out the freakishly large church window. As the

minutes passed, she was getting more and more worried that Avon was one of thoseunfaithful men who ran away from the ceremony at the last minute.

Avon, Declan, and the monsters trekked through the windy desert, still searching

for the spirit that could grant their wishes. The gusts were so strong that there was noway to tell where they came from because their footprints were blown away almost

immediately after they were created. Saul the bassala still had his plan in his sometimes-thick head to wish for a new engagement ring. He had a good feeling about it.

Avon, though he was leading the group, felt a little unsure about the monotony of the journey. No matter how far the group went, there was still nothing of importance in

sight, much less a magical oasis.

“Why did you stop?” questioned Declan. At first, Avon refused to answer him;

he had a tear in his eye, just like his fiancée who was waiting for him at the church. “Sowhy did you stop?”

“Well, Saul,” said Avon‟s voice, “You did something right.” Avon didn‟t strayfar – he only walked the equivalent to a few blocks before noticing the oasis in the other

direction.

At the church, the wedding was just getting under way and everyone sat down intheir correct places – everyone with the bride on one side, everyone with the groom on

the other. In the far back, Hazel was linking her arm to her father‟s, her mind ripe with anticipation. Avon was expected to be at the front, where the priest was, but on that spot

stood nobody.“Is this thing going to start or what?” asked Emmett, who was bearing the ring-

bearing pillow, but not the ring.

“Come to think of it,” said Caitlin II, “Has anyone seen Declan?” “Weren‟t you in charge of him?” asked Adlai. Caitlin II stood up from her pew

and eagerly called out her biological son‟s name.

“Declan Victor Sage McClintock, are you in this building?!” No answer. “How could you have not noticed that he was gone?” Adlai‟s mother sulked a

little.

“I just assumed that he came here in another car.”

“I‟ll look for him!” said May, sitting in back of her Aunt Caitlin.

Page 10: Music Monster Mini Adventures Episode 9: Matrimony Salad

“May, you can‟t go out and search for him,” said Adlai. May couldn‟t let go of anobjection lightly and demanded why she shouldn‟t embark on this mission.

“Why not?!”

“Because you‟re a girl.”  A vain nearly burst from May‟s forehead when she

heard those four words.

“Because I‟m a what ?” “Honey,” Caitlin II told Adlai, “It‟s best not to piss May off. Pissing her off islike pissing four little girls off.” May continued throwing her hissy fit like a cat getting

vaccinated.“I can do anything you can do!” she said. “I‟m a better soccer player!”

“That‟s enough, Sweetie,” said Owen, trying not to get embarrassed, “I think weget the point.” May sat down in her pew and starting behaving again, though she was

still angry.“Just you see, Adlai,” she whispered, “What you say about women isn‟t always

correct.”

The soon-to-be husband of Hazel and his companions starred at the legendaryapparition in awe. Just as they stopped believing in him – poof  – there he appeared. It

was like the reverse Tinkerbelle effect.“Congratulations, travelers. You all have managed to stumble upon Opus Oasis

and find me, the spirit of the continent.” Apollo was an important being but was

flamboyant and didn‟t take everything so seriously.

“Are we going to get one wish each?” asked Declan eagerly. Apollo sighed. “That‟s what I was going to say, Mister Know-It-All. Now, who wants to go

first?” Declan raised his hand as if his teacher had just asked a simple question.  “It lookslike Mister Know-It-All wants to go first. Well, I‟m listening.”

“I want an idea for a song!”  “Sorry, kid, but ideas can‟t appear like magic. They need to be thought up by

somebody on their own. If I grant your wish and make a song idea appear, then it will be

my song, not yours.” Declan looked toward the ground and realized that Apollo had a

point. Song lyrics need to come from somewhere special; an inspiration, an event, abeautiful occurrence.

“Alright, then I wish that my monster is one experience level higher than he isnow.” A tiny ball of light flew out of Apollo‟s hand and landed on Tobiii‟s forehead.

“Your monster has been elevated to level 3.” Declan became giddy about his monster‟sacquired strength, though he still didn‟t have a song yet.

Avon was next with his wish-making.“What is your desire, young man?” asked Apollo.

“I wish to have a good singing voice, one that will make all the women in atwenty foot radius swoon.”

“Your wish is my command.”  Another tiny ball of light flew out of Apollo‟shand and this time it slipped into Avon‟s mouth and went down his throat. Surprised,

Avon massaged his throat to feel if it disappeared or not.

“Now you have a melodic voice. C‟mon, try it.” Avon puffed up his chest like an

opera singer and belted out an F note. His voice was clear and mellowing – it almostmade Declan, Tobiii and Saul swoon. “Be sure to use that voice when you can because it

Page 11: Music Monster Mini Adventures Episode 9: Matrimony Salad

will be gone in twenty-four hours.” Saul the bassala was feeling a little peckish from hislong trek , so he couldn‟t wait to have his wish granted.

“I would like to go!” said Saul the bassala. “I wish that I had a dog bisc-” Beforehe could finish dictating his wish, Saul had an important thought. His conscience told

him to stop doing what he was doing and he listened. What he was doing then was

putting his selfish desires first, which is what he did when he used the engagement ring topower up in battle. This time, he was making his situation even worse by forgettingabout the new ring he promised. What the hell was he thinking? “I‟ll tell you my wish.

Forget all about what I said before.” “I‟m all ears.”

“I wish for a new power up ring.” Apollo granted Saul‟s wish and in his paw ashiny new power-up ring appeared. This one looked as if the stone was freshly mined

from the shafts. Saul looked up toward Avon with an accomplished look on his doggyface. “Here you go, Avon. I‟m sorry about the last ring.”

“Don‟t mention it, buddy.” Before that moment, nobody had called Saul “Buddy”before, not even his own human partner.

The friends and loved ones of the bride were still waiting for Avon to arrive for

the ceremony. People were becoming impatient and started chit-chatting again just likethey were before they sat down. Hazel began to cry but hid it well by wiping away the

tears before they could slide down her face.

“I think my fiancée is afraid of commitment,” she sobbed.

“Honey, that „till death do you part‟ thing doesn‟t exactly apply to this day andage. Nowadays, half of all marriages end in divorce, so your boyfriend can call it quits

whenever he wants.”

“Don‟t give up on me yet!” said Avon as he slammed the church doors open. He

knew exactly what they were thinking because his watch told him that he was tardy.Nevertheless, he made it and gave the new ring to Emmett to place on his pillow. While

people were starring at them, Avon walked to the front of the church and Declan satdown next to his mother, who was a bit cross with him for not telling her where he was

going. As soon as the groom stood at the front of the room, the wedding started and the

organ began playing. As soon as everyone in front of them made their entrance, Duncanwalked gracefully with his youngest daughter down the aisle, getting ready to give her

away. Within moments, she and her groom became the center of attention. Avon was alittle nervous.

Meanwhile, in Avon‟s stomach…

“You wanna really screw with this guy?” asked one of the butterflies fluttering

about. He then whipped out some little dynamite sticks and exploded them, causing moreweird feelings to ensue.

“Ugh…” said Avon, “I shouldn‟t have gotten drunk and eaten those caterpillars at

the bachelor party.“Ladies and gentlemen,” said the priest, “We gather here today to bond Avon

Ralph Simmons and Hazel Ashby Thatcher in holy matrimony…”

Some time later, the ceremony ended when the priest finally said those fatefulwords: “You may now kiss the bride.” Everyone applauded as Avon and Hazel sealed

the deal in the most romantic way possible.

The wedding reception took place at an Italian restaurant. Balloons adorned theprivate room and a karaoke machine was set up for everyone to see. Hazel was proudly

displaying her engagement ring, which she didn‟t know was replaced. Avon and Hazelhad many wedding gifts to open, but Declan was about to give them their most special

gift of all in the form of a piece of paper.“I have something for you,” Declan said as he tugged at Avon‟s tuxedo. Avon

looked at the piece of paper and saw handwriting that was difficult to read because it waswritten by a child.

“Do you mind telling me what you wrote?” he asked. Declan whispered hisnewly written lyrics into Avon‟s ear and he wrote them down on his napkin using a

business pen. “That‟s ingenious. Are you sure you didn‟t pay somebody else to write

this?”
