GENRE• My genre for my music magazine is Rap Music. • I have chosen rap music because I am interested in the

genre and feel as though I understand the conventions, in order to construct a good magazine, for this type of music. Also, with this type of music immersing properly in America I felt that from visiting this location I could incorporate culture and history within my magazine.

PRICE• The magazine will be a monthly edition and would cost £2.99 a month. I

have decided on this price through looking at my competitors in America XXL and The Source.

• I Have decided to set my price slightly cheaper so that I am able to immerse into the market as a new magazine which can be difficult as my magazine are already well established. My price has also been set on the basis of my intended audience of 15-21 year olds who are predominately in education with part time or no work. Having a monthly magazine also links to my target audience as it means that they have enough money to want to pay for it. If it was a weekly magazine the magazine may not get a proper following by the audience.

NAME OF MAGAZINE

• Name: $$$ (3DOLLARMAGAZINE)• Chosen because: The dollar sign symbolises money and wealth

something which rappers constantly mention within their lyrics and music videos. The dollar sign also fits into the American theme of the magazine.

Also the price is £2.99 so 3dollar represents this• Pros: It is short, simple, has bold font, is easy to read, recognise and

remember just like my competition.• Cons: The $ sign is extremely cliché within rap music however as it

is well recognised it could work to the magazines advantage• Slogan: Read Music, See Music, Live Music• Chosen because: The use of a triplet is eye catching to the consumer

it also makes the audience aware that it is a music magazine.

COLOUR SCHEMEI chose the colours blue, red and white as they reinforce my American Theme. They also do not clash with each other and are typical for the unisex audience I am aiming my magazine at.

I have chosen a light grey background throughout also to appeal to both genders.

However, I will use elements of black and gold to emphasis important text.

Here are some examples of my competition incorporating this colour pallet showing that it is successful.

TYPOGRAPHY

• My Chosen Font is called

• I chose this font because as the print screen shows “The Full Pack” is a 12” vinyl. As I am creating a music magazine I felt as though this subtle touch would fit the purpose of my magazine.

•Also Full Pack sounds like Full Back which is an attacking position in American football. Therefore this font will add to my American theme I am trying to portray at advance/attack the market.

FRONT COVER – MID SHOT

• I will be using a medium shot at eye level for my front cover due to the fact from my research I have notice all my competitors have used this shot as you can see from my flipagram in my post below.

• It has the ability to show my cover artist in detail so that my audience are able to connect more with the magazine as the shot is comfortable, allowing room for hand gestures.

CONTENTS – LOW ANGLE LONG SHOT

• My contents page will feature another artist in a pose similar to the one pictured on the right however I will position the camera looking down to show he has less power than my main artist.

• I chose this pose because it is a common pose done by rap artists when posing for photo shoots. It also enables you need see the stereotypical ‘street’ body language associate with the rap genre.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

Page 19: Music magazine pitch

LAYOUT

• The double page spread will contain an exclusive interview with the magazines journalist and the featured artist. The use of an interview will make the magazine seem personal as it will only be featured within this magazine making the audience feel connected to the artist and in turn creating a good selling point.

• The double page spread will be accompanied with two quotes from the interview, both on the right page.

• I will also include two images one on either page. However, these pictures will not be too big as the target audience should be educated therefore the correct balance between images and text is required.

Page 20: Music magazine pitch

THE INTERVIEW

• I will take an in depth approach to my interview instead of it being a closed question and answer interview thus appealing more to my young but educated target audience.

• As my front cover states this is an exclusive interview I will ensure my questions have the ability to challenge the artist and give a lengthy response so that my reader feels that the interview was in fact exclusive and the information couldn't be found elsewhere.

FEATURES

INDUCEMENTS• In order to decide on what offers I should use within my magazine I decided

to look at other rap magazines to see what they had to offer their readers.• In doing so I noticed that as well established brands they didn’t need to offer

inducements in order to attract readers to buy their magazine.• However, as my magazine is penetrating into this market I have decided to

include a discount on monthly subscription of the magazine as this will create a loyal customer base.

• I have also decided to use a blackberry barcode which you are able to scan with iphones which gives you the chance to win exclusive offers through the magazines website. I used the idea of a barcode as the majority of people within the target audience have a smart for therefore are able to use this. It also incorporates the internet into my magazine which is something that is highlighted in my target audiences interests.

UNIQUE SELLING POINTS

Page 24: Music magazine pitch

UNISEX• The first unique selling point I have incorporated into my

magazine is appealing to both sexes through using a female as my cover image and using a mixed colour scheme.

• The reason I chose to do this is because within my research I felt there was a gap in the market and as a new magazine it would be extremely difficult to compete against well established brands. Therefore through being unique and included females as well as different races I hope to gain a larger consumer base than my competitors XXL and The Source in the long term by attract a female auidience.

Page 25: Music magazine pitch

CONCERT CALENDER• The target audience for my magazine being 15-21 year olds means the

majority of my audience will be in education and if they do have jobs they will be of minimum wage.

• Therefore by regarding their lifestyles it is evident that many of my audience are unable to attend concerts and festivals as they do not have enough income to fund them.

• Because of this I decided to include a concert calendar within my magazine which shows the dates and locations of all artists within this music genres upcoming events so that my readers are able to save up in advance to afford tickets to such events.

AMERICAN THEMED

• Another USP I have decided to use is basing the whole concept of my magazine around the American music industry despite it being sold in the UK.

• My reason for doing this is the fact that my two competitors The Source and XXL are American based magazines that are only sold within the US. However, through online sites such as ebay you are able to purchase them for a higher price.

• Through this research I was able to see that this magazine would be extremely popular in the UK as there isn’t any other music magazine of this type on the shelves in shops so I will not have any competitors but already have a guaranteed customer base.
