Sony Music Entertainment Incorporated is a subsidiary of Sony, and is a company that produces recordings and videos for music artists worldwide. The institution was previously known as Sony BMG Music Entertainment up until the year 2008. With the company being founded in 2004, it then began to expand and headquarters were located in New York City. Various genre’s are covered by the group, with recordings and labels available in rock, pop, country etc.

It is one of the world’s most popular and well known music companies, with its power easily seen as it has ownership and distribution over music companies such as Columbia Records and Epic Records. Some of the artists that have commonly featured through Sony are: Beyonce, Britney Spears, Chris Brown, Glee, Pitbull, Shakira, Foo Fighters and many more…

Artsts tend to be attracted to Sony Music Entertainment inc due to their popularity and quality. They have a worldwide distribution access which helps stream videos and assist artists become ‘well known’ in the industry. Sony will help artists by promoting their music in several countries to increase audience and attract potential fans, this will be done in various ways, for example TV adverts and merchandise.

EMI Music

EMI Music is one of the world’s leading music companies and is home to a large number of popular and very successful music artists. The institution brings fans and artists together by creating value and action wherever music is to be experienced.

At the time of its break-up in 2012 it was the fourth-largest business group and family of record labels in the recording industry and was one of the big four record companies (now the big three). Its record labels included EMI Records, Parlophone, Virgin Records, and Capitol Records. EMI Group also had a major publishing arm, EMI Music Publishing—also based in London with offices globally.

EMI administered the publishing rights of over 1.3 million songs, controlling the libraries of artists such as Jay-Z, Beyoncé, deadmau5, Timo Maas, Dragon, the Prodigy, Megadeth, the Black Eyed Peas, Bloc Party, My Chemical Romance, Avicii, Cannibal Corpse, the Crystal Method, Quarashi, Dragpipe, Avenged Sevenfold, Slipknot, MSTRKRFT, and Sean Paul.

Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) is one of three United States performing rights organizations, along with ASCAP and SESAC. It collects license fees on behalf of songwriters, composers, and music publishers and distributes them as royalties to those members whose works have been performed. In FY 2013, BMI collected more than $944 million in licensing fees and distributed $814 million in royalties.

BMI songwriters create music in many genres, including mainstream pop and country, death metal and hip hop. BMI represents artists such as Demi Lovato, Fifth Harmony, Lil Wayne, Birdman, Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Eminem, Rihanna and Shakira; bands as diverse as Maroon 5, Evanescence, Nickelback and Linkin Park; Sam Cooke, Willie Nelson, Fats Domino and Dolly Parton; as well as composers such as Harry Gregson-Williams, John Williams and Danny Elfman and musical songwriters Richard & Robert Sherman.

BMI tracks public performances for 8.5 million works, and collects and distributes licensing revenues for those performances as royalties to over 600,000 songwriters, composers, and music publishers it represents. Their offices are based in Atlanta, London, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York, and Puerto Rico.
