he wide system of museums, theatres and libraries

of the City of Bologna offers numerous opportunities

of knowledge and in-depth analysis to citizens,

students and visitors in each field of culture.

The articulated network of civic museums preserves,

studies and enhances the value of a rich historical,

artistic, scientific and technological heritage,

documenting the entire history of Bologna and its

territory, from the first pre-historical sites till today’s

industrial district.

The theatre scene in Bologna, one of the first

nationwide, is particularly rich and varied. Teatro

Comunale is a testament to the operatic and

symphonic tradition of the city, while the best

national and international music, drama and dance

performances are on show throughout the year in its

main theatres.

Research and innovation in the performing arts is

particularly fertile and finds in Bologna a large and

attentive audience. Nevertheless there is no shortage

of spaces for the dialectal and amateur theatre and a

continued attention to the world of childhood.

Civic libraries have a vast book collection and are open

to all citizens, students, readers and scholars either in

the city centre or in the peripheral quarters. There is

a wide selection of multimedia items, offered services

and cultural initiatives in all the libraries. One can

often find readings, book presentations, conferences,

exhibitions, kids’ activities and more.
