The European wasp wipe out! June 2021
After successive, challenging seasons, WA can breathe a sigh of relief and celebrate some spectacular results.
Insecticide treatment of underground European wasp nest
Season stats: • 68,100 ha (68.1km2) under intensive surveillance • 3,000+ surveillance traps deployed • 14 nests destroyed – all in the Perth metro • 4 confirmed public detections • ALL hot spots ERADICATED! An enviable history European wasps have hitchhiked their way around the globe, establishing and spreading everywhere within their biological range, largely unchallenged... except in WA. Since 1977 when first evidence of this pest emerged in WA, we’ve mounted an attack.
European wasps have permanently established in south-east Australia (SA, NSW, ACT, VIC and TAS) but are not subject to state-wide control programs, resulting in an annual influx of wasps into WA. So, we must not let our guard down, as detections must be made early to have the best chance of eradication and prevent the permanent establishment and spread of this pest. Brush up on your European wasp identification skills, consider trapping alongside us and learn more about this surveillance program at agric.wa.gov.au/wasps or contact our Pest and Disease Information Service. Until next season! WA, we’ve mounted an attack.
The 2020-21 European wasp (Vespula germanica)
surveillance season has finished strongly with nest
numbers plummeting to the lowest they’ve been in 12
years and not a whisper from the destructive pest for
months!
This victory comes after three years of sustained
efforts: additional resourcing, strong community
reporting, multi-government departmental collaboration,
and a WA-first baiting program implemented across
2,530 hectares (25.3km2) of rugged bushland in the
Perth Hills. It took everything from the playbook and a
few new innovative moves to detect, delineate and wipe
out this pest

Who would have thought in this age of Internet that collecting stamps would be a lucrative way of fundraising? 53,000 REASONS TO RECYCLE THOSE STAMPS.
I would like to thank all those people in our community who contributed Used Stamps over the last year. The Foundation
Chairman received a cheque for $53,000 solely from the sale of those Used Stamps.
Just imagine, with little or no effort, what a difference a Used Stamp can make to a child with Cerebral Palsy, not only the
child, but the whole family.
Please continue to collect those stamps. They can be deposited at the Pinjarra Library or you can call me direct on 9531
1137 or 0481 880 072.
Pets of Older People (POOPS) is all about reducing the stress on people over the age of 65, those receiving palliative care or people with disabilities while also improving the wellbeing of their pets.

PHBG takes show on the road for landholders
The Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group is hitting the road to showcase their equipment, programs and activities for landholders, with roadshow events culminating at their annual general meeting.
The roadshow includes a range of community events and open days for landholders to attend to find out how the PHBG can support them in their declared pest management.
‘These events are designed so the community can come along to meet the PHBG team. Each event will be a great opportunity to check out our new piece of equipment, the weed wiper, or sign up to programs and events.’ Teele Hooper-Worrell from the PHBG said.
The weed wiper will be available for landholders to help them control Cape tulip and can be loaned from July to September. Traditionally landholders would have to spray using herbicide at a low concentration to decrease off target impacts which often lead to ineffective control results. The weed wiper is designed to apply herbicide directly onto the Cape tulip plant allowing landholders to increase concentrations. The equipment can be set to a height where the herbicide reaches the weed but misses any pasture or commercial crops that are growing. Two sizes are available, with the smaller size suitable for properties under 10 acres.
‘Recently we were set up at the Brunswick Bowling Club for a carpark equipment showcase and while the weed wiper was a huge talking point, feral pigs were also high on the agenda for locals,’ Ms Hooper-Worrell said.
Feral pigs are a growing issue across the PHBG’s operational area and the group has responded by creating a range of support options for landholders. Feral pigs not only damage productive agricultural land but they are vectors for diseases, like the African swine flu, which put domestic pig industries at risk. Landholders impacted by feral pigs are being encouraged to contact the Group.
The roadshow finishes at the PHBG’s annual general meeting which is an opportunity to meet PHBG volunteers and staff, hear about the work of the organisation and find out about how you can become involved in plans for the year ahead.
For more information on what events are coming up near you check out the PHBG’s Facebook page. If a landholder is interested in loaning out a weed wiper send an email to [email protected] or call 0474 242 223.

The aim of the Historical Society is to research, collect, maintain and share stories of the Murray District that stretches from North Dandalup to Coolup, from West Murray to Dwellingup – and including the vibrant town of Pinjarra. We have a well maintained local history library, interesting displays and a large collection of photographs, documents, and display books.
We also have a strong membership of enthusiastic people and are always looking for additional members to join us. If you have a love of history, in particular of the Murray District, or if you have information to share, please visit us. And if you like what you see, consider becoming a member of our group. Our general meetings with a guest speaker are open to visitors. Other events, including bus trips, are available to members. All visitors are welcome to browse our collections during our ‘open’ hours or by appointment.

Naming of Ravenswood - Additional information
The Landgate website states:
RAVENSWOOD
Latitude 32° 35' S Longitude 115° 50' E
The townsite of Ravenswood is located in the south west region, 83 km south of Perth and 8 km south east of Mandurah. It is located on a bend in the Murray River, and was originally the name of a property taken up in this area by Adam Armstrong in the 1840's. Armstrong's property was known as "Ravenswood Farm". Ravenswood was known as a locality as early as 1895 and following private subdivision in the area in the 1960's the Shire of Murray requested the declaration of a townsite. The townsite of Ravenswood was gazetted in 1970.
Submitted by:
Shellie Cummings
4X Great Granddaughter of Adam Armstrong
I wish to submit this additional information related to where the name Ravenswood came from so that this new information is added not only to our families history but to our States history.
The Armstrong Family story.
My ancestor, Adam Armstrong named Location 16 on the banks of the Murray River, “Ravenswood”.
In researching the naming of Ravenswood, I heard a common story from the various family lines of Adam ’s descendants. All said that Adam named his property of the banks of the Murray River after a location in Scotland in Melrose known as “Scott’s View” where there is a bend in the Tweed River similar to that on the Murray River.
In late 2019, my husband and I travelled to the UK to fulfil a lifetime dream of retracing Adam Armstrong’s life prior to coming to Western Australia on the ship Gilmore in 1829.
One of our many stops was at “Scott’s View”. While we were sitting admiring the stunning view when my husband asked why Adam had named his property Ravenswood after this view. I responded that I didn’t know. Sitting next to us were two local gentlemen. They had overheard me and one asked if we were Australian and what was our interest in this location. I told them Adam ’s story and that I was retracing his life prior to coming to Western Australia and just had to see this view for myself but as to why “Ravenswood” I didn’t know. The two men smiled and then one said, “…Lass can you see the smoke between the trees on that bend in the river’. I could see the smoke. He then went on to say that the smoke was coming from an historic house which was called “Ravenswood”. How Adam knew of this property we will never know, but it is possible he had visited this property when travelling or read about it or seen images, no matter how he knew, we now know conclusively where the name Ravenswood came from. He would not have seen Ravenswood House as it stands today but rather an earlier version, as the current building was commenced in 1824, 9 years after Adam had moved his family to Cheshire, England.
The family mystery had been solved, knowing that the historic Ravenswood house stands on a bend on the Tweed River at “Scott’s View” explains where the name Ravenswood came from. The property obviously created a lasting impressing on him, so much so that when Adam saw Loc 16 on the Murry River he named his property “Ravenswood”.
I have included some relevant details below relating to Ravenswood, Scotland.
Below: Map of Melrose, Scotland 1921-1923, showing Ravenswood.
Research tells us that the “Ravenswood Estate” at Melrose has existed since 1775.
Below are details of an early Ravenswood Deed.

POSITIVE THOUGHTS
A Small Kindness
Most people would have heard of Helen Keller, especially if they have seen the movie “The Miracle Worker”. Blinded as a young child, she also was deaf, and she was written off as someone who would be unable to learn. It was this same supposedly useless person who gained entry into Harvard’s Radcliffe College at the age of 19. Five years later she was the first person with deaf-blindness to gain a University degree and graduated in the top 20% of students in her course. She then went on to write 14 books, travel as an advocate for people with disabilities and also to be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize!
Helen’s public success and passion was made possible by the incredible work done with her as child by another lady who also suffered from a form of blindness – Anne Sullivan. It was Anne Sullivan who took on the task of educating Helen who could not talk or see. Under Anne’s care Helen began to learn, and eventually, working together, Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan had a huge impact on the world around them.
What many don’t know is that Anne Sullivan and her brother had been abandoned by her father and sent to a poor house when she was 10 years old. She uncontrollable and would bite, scream and throw food at staff. What nobody understood was that Anne was almost blind due to a number of bad eye infections when she was younger.
A maid working at the poorhouse felt sorry for Anne and baked a small cake for her. Instead of throwing it, Anne accepted the gift and ate it. The maid began to build a friendship with Anne and because of this the staff were able to discover her eye problem. At the age of 15 Anne was able to get an operation to help return some of her sight. She went on to get an education, finally ending up as the tutor for a young deaf-blind girl – Helen Keller. And as people say “The rest is history”.
Many people know of Helen Keller. Many people of Anne Sullivan. Nobody seems to know the name of the maid who befriended Anne in the poorhouse. However, it was her kindness that changed history for both of these well-known ladies.
When Helen Keller was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, she was asked who had the greatest impact on her life and she said, "Annie Sullivan." But it is reputed that Anne said, "No Helen. The woman who had the greatest influence on both our lives was a floor maid at the Tewksbury Institute."
A small act of kindness can have a huge ripple effect.

With the close of the 2020-21 season, Winter Bowls commenced 23rd May with Thursday Social Bowls commencing 1pm and
Saturday Meat Pack Triples commencing 1pm. Both are mixed and new and prospective bowlers are welcome, an ideal time to try
this great sport for all ages. Coaching is available. Contact Stephen Lee 0417 288 724 or Bruce Greene 0429 441 918.
Presentation Night was the culmination of the year. Phyllis Morrison is the Ladies Singles Champion and Last year’s Champion
Anne Carter runner-up. Tom Ellison won the Men’s Singles Championship from Peter Money.
In Pennants, the Ladies held their positions in 2nd and 4th Divisions. The Men’s Saturday 2nd Division won promotion to 1st Division
and the Finals Flag, while the two 4th Division teams performed well. The Mid-week Men’s 2nd Division finished well, while 3rd
Division were not so successful.
At the AGM, two hard working and highly effective Committee members in Secretary Jan Hall and Treasurer Sandra Krautil took
their leave, after several year’s combined contribution. Margaret Steel remains President, Bruce Greene is Secretary and Carl
Pizzino Treasurer.
New and updated uniforms will grace our greens next season, generously sponsored by Orica.
Barefoot Bowls had 11 nights after one washout and a slow start to the second session due largely to the initial mandated mask
wearing. Overall winners for 2020-21 were Team ABC; congratulations to ABC on their achievement in both sessions. Thank you
to Bruce and Tenille Greene and Grant Watson for running the Community Bowls Summer session, along with all helpers for the
season and thanks to the many sponsors who contributed hugely to the attractive and the novel prizes.
Friday Night Social Bowls followed by bought in eats has been very successful. Thanks to Steve Lee and his assistants for
stepping up and giving it added life; several new members arose from these nights and Barefoot Bowls.
Fortunately, Covid19 has had minimal and manageable effect on our operations. But wearing a mask, with hearing aids and
fogged up glasses in the lock-down was a minor challenge!
The new sand-fill green is progressing slowly, having to compete with the building trade in one stage. But hopefully the top may be
on in a couple of weeks as we look ahead to a much better playing surface.
The season is fast drawing to a close, with the Ladies Pennants completed, Second Division finishing third and Fourth Division
sixth. The Men’s Pennants have two rounds left before the Finals. Currently 2nd Division are 1st on Tuesdays and 2nd on Saturdays,
4th Division Saturday 1st, with others further back.
Val Groves excelled by winning the Murray District Bowling League Ladies Novice Championship.
The Club Championship Singles are the ultimate season enders, Phyllis Morrison proving too strong in defeating Anne Carter in
the Ladies Singles final and the Men’ Singles are currently being played. The Men’s Championship Pairs was won by Ben Cepi
and Allan Krautil.
Bare Foot Bowls concludes this week, and a detailed round-up will be given next month. Those participating have enjoyed the
Tuesday nights immensely.
Darts. We have implemented a new Mixed Darts Competition commencing Thursday 25th March, initially with six teams. While this
round is formalised, expressions of interest are welcome for future competitions: Contact Stan on 0418 926 599 or

Despite the theft of valuable equipment we were able to overcome the shortages and commence our Steam Season on 2nd
May. Members although inconvenienced with the lockdown worked tirelessly to have everything ready for the published
commencement day. As the carriages were parked for several months they required extensive cleaning which was
undertaken by members on several special cleaning days. Coal was bagged and delivered by the Pinjarra crew whilst loco
maintenance men put the final pieces together for safety testing and accreditation.
As it turned out to be a beautiful fine day nearly 200 people came and enjoyed the thrill of steam. The following weekend
being Mothers Day saw another 200 people travel to Dwellingup to travel on the Steam Ranger. This service will now be
operating every Sunday at 10.30am and 2pm until October. Schools holidays will see additional service on each
Wednesday. Bookings are now available.
The resumption of our Restaurant has seen an unexpected demand. Bookings are required and many people have been
disappointed because they cannot be accommodated on their preferred Saturday. Office Manager Mary has been working
long hours to process bookings and advised me that some evenings up to November have been fully booked.
There is no doubt that the expansion of the Trails and Visitors Centre has lured many visitors to Dwellingup. Who in turn,
are giving good promotion for the railway through word of mouth.
Behind the scenes all the end of year paperwork has been completed with the Annual General Meeting to be held at our
new premises at Felsphar St, Welshpool. As with many organisation it is unlikely there will be many changes in the Board
Members.
Do not forget to help the railway by using our Code C10356960 to deposit Containers at the re-cycling depots. Additional
funds are always welcome to assist in many ways including the replacement of stolen equipment.

COVID-19 Vaccine
Who will get the COVID-19 vaccination first?
Some people will have the COVID-19 vaccination first, including
people who are at a higher risk of catching the virus and getting
very sick if they catch the virus. We call these priority groups.
These groups were decided a team of medical experts called the
Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI).
In line with the advice of ATAGI the Pfizer vaccine will be
prioritised for people under 50 years of age.
The AstraZeneca vaccine will be prioritised for people aged 50
years and over.
To find out if you are in a priority group, you can talk to your
doctor, or visit the Covid 19 Vaccine Eligibility Check website:
https://www.health.gov.au/resources/apps-and-tools/covid-
19-vaccine-eligibility-checker. If you are eligible to book, you
will be able to view and select clinic locations based on the
location you enter on the website. More appointments will
become available as more clinics come on-board, and more
vaccine becomes available. People are encouraged to continue
to check the vaccine clinic finder website each week if they
cannot secure a suitable appointment at this stage.
Why is the COVID-19 vaccine administered across 2 doses?
After having a vaccine, your body creates antibodies to protect
you from that disease. Two doses are needed to provide the full
benefit, with the first dose helping the immune system create a
response against the virus that causes COVID-19, and the
second dose working to further boost the immune response to
help provide long-term protection. If you receive the COVID-19
vaccine and are exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19 in
the future, your immune system will be able to respond faster
and better against the virus and help protect you against the
severity of the disease. You will likely be encouraged to book
your second appointment at your first, to help ensure you do
not forget.
Can I get my COVID-19 vaccination at the same time as my
annual flu vaccination?
Due to the nature of these different vaccinations, you will not be
able to receive a COVID-19 vaccination at the same time as
when you get your flu vaccination. The preferred length of time
between receiving a flu vaccination and a COVID-19 vaccination
is at least 14 days, however this varies dependant on the
vaccine. Speak to your pharmacist or GP for more details.
When is the best time to get the flu vaccination?
While protection from a flu vaccination is generally expected to
last for the whole flu season, immunity against the flu is
strongest and most effective 3 to 4 months after you are
vaccinated. The flu season in Australia usually runs from June to
September, peaking in August. It is recommended to get
vaccinated before the start of the flu season, to give
yourself the best chance at protection.
Note that if you were to get a flu vaccination and a COVID-19
vaccination, you will need to visit your pharmacy or GP on three
separate occasions.
For more information or any questions or concerns about
the COVID-19 vaccination and the flu vaccination, please
come and visit TerryWhite Chemmart Pinjarra and speak
with our friendly pharmacists today!
Rob Pearson—Pharmacist/Proprietor
9531 2436 27 Forest St, Pinjarra
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, each of us have
adapted to taking extra measures to help avoid the spread of the
virus. While social distancing and hygiene help with reduced
transmission, vaccination is the best way to help protect yourself and
prevent the spread of COVID-19.
How will a vaccine prevent COVID-19?
The coronavirus that causes COVID-19 has spikes of protein on each
viral particle. These spike proteins allow the virus to attach to cells
and cause disease. The vaccines help the body to recognise these
spike proteins as foreign and fight the coronavirus that has them. The
vaccine will protect a person who receives it by lowering their
chances of getting COVID-19 if they encounter the coronavirus.
Why should I get vaccinated for COVID-19?
Vaccination is the most effective way to protect against infectious
diseases. Vaccines strengthen your immune system by training it to
recognise and fight against specific viruses. When you get
vaccinated, you are protecting yourself and helping to protect the
whole community. COVID-19 can spread quickly and widely. It has
resulted in the deaths of over 1.9 million people worldwide and over
900 deaths in Australia. When enough people in the community are
vaccinated, it slows down the spread of disease. Achieving herd
immunity is a long-term goal. It usually requires a large amount of the
population to be vaccinated.
Is the COVID-19 vaccine safe?
Scientists around the world have made different COVID-19 vaccines.
In Australia, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)
approves all vaccines before they can be used. The TGA is a group
of Independent medical experts. As the TGA is independent, they do
not work for the government to make their own decisions.
The TGA only approves vaccines that are safe and work well. After
they approve a vaccine, the TGA keeps a list of the vaccines they
approve and will keep track of how well the vaccine works and safety
of the vaccine. The TGA has already approved 2 COVID-19 vaccines
in Australia. They are called the AstraZeneca vaccine and Pfizer
vaccine.
The urgency of the global pandemic means that all available
resources and efforts go towards developing and rolling out effective
vaccines. Clinical trials progress more quickly if a disease is
widespread, as is the case with COVID-19 in many countries. This
means researchers can test a vaccine much sooner than they could
for a rare infectious disease.
What should I do before I get vaccinated for COVID-19?
While you wait to be vaccinated for COVID-19, there are some things
you can do to get ready.
Make sure your details are up to date with Medicare. You can do
this using either your Medicare online account through myGov or
calling the Medicare program.
Once you have had your vaccine, you’ll be able to get an
immunisation history statement to prove your vaccination status. You
can get proof of vaccinations from your Medicare immunisation
history through myGov, or by calling Medicare on 1800 653 809.

Happenings at Pinjarra Art Hub in June 2021
The May exhibition entitled ‘What is Art’ in our Liveringa Gallery gave exhibitors a chance to expand the boundaries of what is considered art, and all rose to the occasion with a unique collection of imaginative works some, of which, defy description, but can still be seen until the close of the display on 14th June. We have also been assured by the Council that the Pinjarra Festival will be going ahead on 5
th & 6
th June providing there are no more future lockdowns.
A programme of exhibitions is in place for the entire year and the next one, commencing on June 19th entitled ‘Fibres,
Fabric & Fusion’ will feature the use of fabrics and fibres to inspire creations from collage to patterning and everything inbetween with all mediums applicable. We are now taking submissions for this exhibition and are asking artists to fuse their ideas to create unique artworks in their chosen disciplines. The Drop-Off Date for all contributions for this exhibition is 15
th June.
Pinjarra Art Hub is constantly seeking new artists to display their work in the gallery. For details they can contact our curator Mitch Stone on 0499 517 183 or apply by email at [email protected] or on our website www.pinjarrarthubatedenvale.org. Pinjarra Art Hub’s Reconnect the Community Post Covid 19 program of events, proudly sponsored by Lotterywest is open to all members of the community who are welcome to join us. At the beginning of May, a Family Recipe Scrapbook event was organised, and families were invited to bring their favourite recipes to be combined in a book which was available for the Bake-Off on May 29th. This event was held in conjunction with Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. The various categories of culinary delights were judged by our Leader, Eileen and proceeds went to the Cancer Council. June 19
th is the date for another charity event…Knitting & Crocheting 15cm x15cm squares to be assembled into items
such as blankets for the community. Donated yarns will be available at our craft shop and the event runs from 10am to 1pm. The facilitator will be Sharron Sutton with her Yarns, Threads and Hookers group. All welcome. Jane Peden’s, recycling textiles classes will continue on certain Saturdays and Sundays when participants will be bringing back to life long-discarded clothing items and converting them into something new. Bookings are essential for this popular class, and Jane can be contacted on 0458 513 780 or look for details on Facebook or flyers posted at the shop. Classes and workshops are available if you are interested in painting and drawing, pottery, leadlighting and mosaics and details and contact numbers can be found on Pinjarra Art Hub’s Facebook page. Who’s who at Pinjarra Art Hub Meet Nola Goodall
Nola crossed the ditch as they say and arrived in Australia from New Zealand in 1976 with her husband John, her daughter and son, staying, at first, with friends in New South Wales. They bought a caravan and travelled for a while before settling in Wollongong which became home interrupted only by a three year stay in Queensland. The family’s move to Western Australia came about in 2005 where Nola found employment at Bedingfeld Aged Care facility in Pinjarra. They remained here for six years. During this period, she became interested in quilting and joined Pinjarra Patchwork Quilters whose beautiful creations are on display every day in the old Schoolhouse within the historic Edenvale complex. However, Nola and her family returned to New South Wales for another period of four years and lived in the small town of Thirlmere where she found her fascination for art and joined a group. She claims she knew very little
about art at that time but enjoyed the interaction with the members who taught her the basics of painting. 2015 saw her back in Pinjarra where she rejoined her quilting friends and became a member of Murray Arts and Crafts, also spending a period as a Committee member. Apart from her involvement in the creation of those fabulous quilts, Nola enjoys the atmosphere at Edenvale and has found much pleasure in learning more about painting and drawing techniques from two of our most talented artists, Rita Barry, and Linda Murray. When she’s not wielding a paint brush or pencil, she can be found twice a week wielding a racket on the tennis courts in South Yunderup.

Wallace House Memory Support Unit
The new facility at Bedingfeld, Wallace House, is now home to 24 residents. This beautiful new wing offers them a serene and spacious environment for their daily activities.
The nurses and carers have noticed a great improvement in the happiness of all the residents since moving into the specially designed and furnished rooms.
The huge living and dining area provides room for activities like craft, bingo, TV and movie watching while the secure outdoor area offers space to walk, to garden and to relax in the open air.
New nursing, caring and support staff have been employed to work in the 25 bed wing
Bedingfeld Park now has 75 beds for the frail aged of our community and has over 90 employees on the team.
Volunteers
It would be wonderful to have some more volunteers to visit the residents of Bedingfeld Park – both in Wallace House and the lodge with low care residents.
The activities staff will show volunteers how to give the residents help and company.
Volunteers help with the residents on outings in the 20 seater bus to enjoy areas in the Peel region.
Bedingfeld is a provider with the Jobseeker program.
Volunteers need a police clearance and a current flu vaccination.
If you are interested in becoming a Bedingfeld Volunteer please call Bedingfeld Park during business hours on 9531 1622.

The Men’s Shed is about to embark on our first stage of major expansion this month with the development of our engineering division to the northern end of our building. We are particularly excited to have taken delivery of a metal lathe and CNC router in the last couple of weeks These machines will be capable of projects including Signmaking, Graphics & Print Finishing, Cabinetry, Woodworking, Plastic Fabrication, Metal Fabrication, and many
more. These machines were purchased with grant funding sourced from ALCOA and Lotterywest which leaves our day to day earnings from projects and sales to be used as we see fit for the benefit of our members. They will in time become a significant source of income considering all of the projects we will be able to take on. Only qualified members will be permitted to operate these specialised computer generated machines, comprehensive workshops will follow for those interested. During this expansion we will be developing the area on the railway side of the Shed and installing Colourbond fencing which will ensure the area always looks tidy from the northern aspect. We also expect the solar system will be installed on the roof by the time you read this newsletter.
Our membership numbers are continuously increasing with nine new members signing up in the last month. It is also pleasing to see our members reading up on the potential that our new state of the art equipment is able to deliver. I envisage many imaginative and clever projects being produced by our talented members.
It is pleasing to report that our recent Open Day was a huge success. Members mingled with people from our community whilst enjoying a bacon n egg roll and perusing our sales table which generated $1500.00 in excess tool sales. There are still more tools and equipment available which will make valuable space so everyone is invited to come and make us an offer. We have applied for a stand for the Pinjarra Festival where we will promote our Men’s Shed to the wider community which will in turn attract new members. Anyone wishing to volunteer to man our stand will be greatly appreciated, please submit your details to Bob, Rob or Jim. Many hands make light work.
We have been extremely busy repairing and restoring furniture for community members which is so rewarding to see a piece of furniture receive some TLC from our talented team and return it to its former glory.
The development of bird, possum and micro-bat nesting boxes is looking promising and if we continue with this project we will in time significantly reduce the need to spray for sandflies and mosquitoes. One micro-bat can consume as much as 50 mosquitos in an evening; this project has been a huge success in reducing the mosquito problem in America.
We still intend to take a trip to the RAAF Aviation Heritage Museum at Bullcreek later in the year but the expansion of the shed is currently our priority. We will be inviting Boddington and Waroona Men’s Sheds to join us which will significantly reduce the cost per person on the bus hire.
The Management Committee feel we have a responsibility to look out for our members’ well-being and we remind members that we have a welfare fund in place to assist members, this may comprise a cab fare or petrol voucher to see a doctor or funding to help with general day to day care etc. We always have members on standby that can assist with transporting members who are incapacitated or unable to drive, if you can’t get to the Shed but would like to come down for a cuppa and some company we are only a phone call away, the kettle is always on.
The Shire of Murray Council is in the process of developing the area around the historical railway buildings that were built by C.Y. O’Connor who was Engineer in Chief in WA in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. He is best known for the construction of Fremantle Harbour and the Goldfields Water supply scheme, which ranks as one of Australia's greatest engineering achievements. The lake created by Mundaring Weir is now known as Lake O'Connor, and still provides drinking water for the towns along the pipeline to Kalgoorlie. Pinjarra was a major hub of rail in the early 1900’s which employed more than 60 people and was a Junction Station to Narrogin and Bunbury. Today this line is operated as a heritage tourist railway by the Hotham Valley Railway. We are prepared to assist in any way we are able as this community project has excellent potential to become a tourist magnet for Pinjarra, particularly for rail enthusiasts. This project will need to be managed by a team that respects the input of volunteers who are eager to help.
We are currently seeking expressions of interest for a knife sharpening and maintenance workshop. Richard McAlinden has kindly offered to facilitate this workshop. Could all interested members please submit your details to Bob, Rob or Jim via email, phone or in person at the office. Bring your favorite knife, sharpening stone and sharpening steel if you have them.
The committee also wishes to advise that Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays are designated to allow members to focus on their own personal projects and Tuesday, Thursdays are days we’d like to focus on maintenance and anything that needs attention including income generating projects. This will ensure our Shed remains a safe and friendly place for everyone in our community to enjoy. We will continue to have our Saturday BBQ at no cost to financial members.
In conclusion, our regular team is keen to see your face at the Shed and the Aircons will be heating the Shed during the winter months. Come on down and check our progress, the kettle is always on. I hope everyone is enjoying good health and staying safe in these unpredictable times.

PINJARRA LIONS ROAR
Winter is upon us and it feels like it’s going to be a cold one. Our May Meat Raffle
was Di, congratulations and we hope you enjoyed the meat you won through Pinjarra Meat Supplies.
I hope everyone enjoyed the Pinjarra Festival. I was actually attending a wedding in Broome so
missed out.
Recycling has taken a bit of a tumble with cans now being recycled by each household instead of
being dropped off to our Lions Recycling Shed. Thankfully Murray Engineering has come on board
and placed collection bins at their premises for employees to recycle cans and bottle on our behalf.
We thank Murray Engineering management and staff for their support to our Club. Spectacles can
still be dropped off at Spud Shed Barragup. Another box full was recently sent off to Queensland for
sorting. Postage Stamps will soon be able to be dropped off at Spud Shed when we place a special
box there for this purpose. Funds from postage stamp recycling help the Lions Australian Children
Mobility Foundation raise funds to help purchase devices for children with cystic fibrosis.
Newspapers can be left at our Recycling Shed in the Pinjarra Industrial Area. Please ensure they
are stacked neatly and are weighed down.
Time to sign off for another month. Keep safe and warm and remember - smile at strangers and you
might just change a life.
