Welcome to our July edition of the Munce Racing Newsletter

THE 2016/17 RACING SEASON

In what was only Chris’s second full year as a trainer he ended the 2016/17 racing season in 8th place on the Qld

Metropolitan ladder. A jump from 13th spot in the 2015/16 year.

With 185 metro runners for the season Chris racked up 25 wins, 16 second placing and 22 thirds earning just over

$1,050,000 in prize money for his owners.

During this racing season Chris was also successful with winning 4 juvenile feature races. The B J McLachlan Stakes and

Phelan Ready Stakes with Ours To Keep, Champ Elect won the Calaway Gal Stakes and Saint Patricks Day taking the

Dalrello Stakes.

Saint Patricks Day also bought Chris the honour of training the first stakes winner for Coolmore shuttle stallion

Excelebration, in Australia, when he won the 2017 Dalrello Stakes at Eagle Farm back in April.

Chris also had two runners in the 2017 Magic Millions 2-year-old Classic with Ours To Keep and Champ Elect.

There was also plenty of success with his other 2-year-olds Skate To Paris, Johnny Whitesox, Dazzling Grey, Sir Cass,

Lucky Jackson and Helfuchi with some breaking their maidens or showing the potential they have as they progress into

their 3-year-old careers.

It is just not the babies that went well this racing season. Along with stable stalwart First Crush, who gained a start in

the 2017 Grafton Cup by winning the Grafton Prelude, new comers to the stable including Constantine, who chalked up

4 wins in a row, Kings Legend, Jexerlent, Asalwas all stepped-up for Chris.

Munce Racing is very much looking forward to the new racing season as our babies all turn 3 and the new crop of

yearlings turn 2. With the upcoming 2-year-old racing season starting to ramp up there is much excitement in the air

as to what the 2017/18 racing year will bring for all our horses.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE OWNERS OF OURS TO KEEP & SAINT PATRICKS DAY

During the last week of July the nominees for the 2017 UBET Queensland Thoroughbred Awards were announced and

both Ours To Keep and Saint Patricks Day were nominated in the category 2YO Horse of the Year.

The boys are up against some strong completion including Capital Gain, Houtzen, Pardoe & Cellargirl.

Munce Racing wishes everyone good luck and fingers will be crossed that it is one of our horse’s name that is called out

on the night.

Ours To Keep Saint Patricks Day

WE NOW HAVE ACCESS TO THE SWIMMING POOL

The pool at Eagle Farm has now been opened and the horses at the stable have been enjoying the swim sessions both

in the morning and afternoons. Swimming is a great therapeutic tool for injured horses but is also used to supplement

their trackwork. Not sure how the horses feel about taking a dip during these cooler months but come summer we are

sure it will be appreciated.

Wicked Style x Zerotami Filly

An attractive and strong chestnut filly that really fits the mould. She is athletic, elegant, moves well and Chris believes

she was a very good buy.

She recently completed her time at the breakers and is currently having a well-earned break at Oakwood Farm. The

breaker was able to get her to a stage to ride and she now needs time to build strength and mature and a short break is

required. She will have a short refresher with the breaker before coming back in to the stable for her next preparation.

Chris is a great believer in time and patience to give our yearlings time to grow and mature and we do not push our

yearlings but let them guide us as to how they are handling their education and workload. If the filly shows she is ready

to race then Chris would look at the early 2-year-old races at the end of the year.

The filly is paid up for the Queensland Thoroughbred Incentive Scheme (QTIS) and is eligible for nomination to the

Magic Millions Race Series.

Written Tycoon x Verkko Filly

Chris has said that when he first saw her she looked a very strong type and had a good walk on her. A very athletic

type of filly. He thought there was a lot of depth to her pedigree which suggested she was a worthwhile prospect not

only as a racehorse but also as a broodmare in the future. Her pedigree is littered with Black Type winners.

Her sire, Written Tycoon was champion first season sire in Australia 2010/11, champion 2-year-old sire in Australia

2015/16 and is the sire of 3 individual G1 winners – Capitalist (winner of 2016 Magic Millions Classic & Golden Slipper),

Music Magnate & Luna Rossa.

Her dam, Verkko (Flying Spur) is closely related to Almighty Girl and Zodiac Ruler.

She comes from the same family as Laisserfaire, A Time for Julia, Foreplay, Time Thief and Centennial Park.

The filly is a September foal which he thinks may help him come a little bit early with her but whether she is a real early

2-year-old (October to before Christmas) he is not sure. But she does look like the type of filly that will race as a 2-

year-old and then go on to the 3-year-old races.

She will be aimed towards the 2018 Magic Millions 2-year-old Classic in January.

Her full brother, KARISTO, had his first start in New Zealand at Te Rapa on 10 June where he ran a credible second.

Trained by Murray Baker, they have a very high opinion of the colt and there is a bit of hype around him so it should be

very interesting to see how he continues on.

The filly has been to the breakers and has just spent two weeks in the stables at Eagle Farm going through her

education. She is currently having a well-deserved break before coming back in for her next preparation.

Racing Australia’s Trainer & Owner Reforms

Racing Australia is introducing new reforms commencing 1 August 2017.

First announced in November 2016, these measures are known as the Trainer and Owner Reforms (TOR) and have

been incorporated into the Australian Rules of Racing. The reforms will operate pursuant to the TOR Rules, which are

part of the Rules of Racing. Trainers and owners are bound by, and subject to, the Rules of Racing and, as a

consequence, are required to comply with the TOR Rules.

The reforms are intended to provide greater certainty and clarity in the relationship between owners and trainers as

well as between multiple owners of a horse. They are also aimed at encouraging on-time payments of training fees

and introduce a streamlined process to resolve issues where payments are not made in a timely fashion.

Racing Queensland & SKY Racing – SEQ Provincial Trial meeting

Racing Queensland (RQ) had been undergoing consultation with SKY in relation to live broadcasting the Gold Coast

trials, that were held on Monday 31 July, on SKY Thoroughbred Central (STC).

The live footage will not be available on STC, however RQ is able to confirm that website replays (SKY & RQ) would be

available within 2 hours of the meeting’s conclusion.

Whilst the RQ trials strategy has resulted in the resumption of Brisbane RC meetings and with that certainty in relation

to the live SKY coverage of them, RQ continues to work with SKY to secure a broadcast solution for other SEQ

(provincial) trial meetings.

BART AND HIS HORSE FROM HEAVEN

“You had a tear in your eye,” remarked a racing scribe to Bart Cummings, after the Cummings trained Saintly had just

won the Melbourne Cup.

“Yeah, I didn’t have enough on it,” replied Bart.

Thousands of racehorses came and went from master trainer Bart Cummings' bases in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney dating back to the 1950s. As the remarkable horse trainer's success spread across Australia, so did the number of horses filling stables at his multi-state operation. However, many believe the influx made the horse and trainer relationship more difficult. Not so for one horse that walked into Cummings' stable in the early 1990s. To the staff he may have been just another hopeful that their boss was going to train, but Cummings knew that, with lots of work, patience, grooming and an ounce of luck, the horse he named Saintly would reward him handsomely. Not only had Bart bred Saintly he had also had trained his sire (Sky Chase), his dam (All Grace) and his grand dam (Ziegfield Lass). Cummings had special plans for Saintly. When the flashy chestnut dominated the 1996 Cup field, Cummings was

rising 70, so the four-year-old was just what the master trainer required to remind the racing world he had more cups in

front of him.

After the Melbourne Cup, Saintly went to Japan for a tilt at their Cup but became critically ill with travel sickness and

missed the race. He was back to full health the following February to win the CF Orr Stakes, which would turn out to be

his last race.

Sadly, injury prevented Saintly from racing on beyond the autumn of 1997, which is what he would have done given he

was a gelding, and robbed the public of mouth-watering clashes with Might and Power who emerged the following

year. He was retired to the Living Legends in 1998 and then returned home to Cummings’ Princes Farm in New South

Wales where he spent his final days.

Cummings’ love for Saintly was highlighted when he named his Melbourne training complex after him – Saintly Place.

A winner of four Group 1s, Saintly won the 1996 Cox Plate/Melbourne Cup double, missed a top three finish in just two

of his 23 starts (10-8-3), and amassed $3,852,765 in prizemoney.

Saintly was one of just five horses, including Nightmarch (1929), Phar Lap (1930), Rising Fast (1954) and Makybe Diva

(2005) – to complete the Cox Plate-Melbourne Cup double in the same year.

He was also part of the absolutely outstanding class of ‘96 3-year-olds with Octagonal, Nothin’ Leica Dane and Filante

all battling it out with each other. Who could forget the ‘96 Rosehill Guineas or the ‘96 AJC Derby.

Saintly was crowned Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year in 1997 and inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in

2017.

The horse from heaven passed away in December 1996 only 2 months after his greatest rival on the track Octagonal.
