MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES
What do you remember? What do you remember from the card activity
that we did last week?
Spend a quiet moment jotting
down some thoughts on the sticky notes
provided. (One idea per sticky note)
Multiple Intelligence Theorist
The theory of multiple intelligences was
developed in 1983 by Howard Gardner,
Professor of Education at Harvard
University.
Multiple Intelligence Theorist
Howard Gardner suggested that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on IQ testing, is too limited. In the past we have concentrated on word and mathematical intelligence as being the most significant.
Gardner argued that we should also value other kinds of intelligence, and he proposed 8 intelligences. (Discussion re ‘existentialist’ and ‘spiritualist’ intelligences has also occurred)
Your opinion
Do you think that the theory is a good one?
Discuss with a partner.
Verbal / linguistic Intelligence
Talking
Reading
Writing
Word smart
Verbal/Linguistic IntelligenceThese learners have highly
developed auditory skills and are
generally elegant speakers.
They think in words rather than
pictures.
Their skills include:
listening, speaking, story telling,
teaching, using humor,
understanding the meaning
of words, remembering information,
convincing someone of their point
of view.
What types of jobs do you think would suit a person with this intelligence? Poet, journalist, writer, teacher, lawyer,
politician, translator
Logical – Mathematical Intelligence
Maths
Playing Chess
Designing computerprograms
Number andreasoning smart
Logical/Mathematical Intelligence Ability to use reason, logic
and numbers. These learners thinkconceptually in logical andnumerical patterns makingconnections between piecesof information.
Their skills include:problem solving, categorisinginformation, working with abstractconcepts to figure out therelationship of each to the other, performing complex mathematicalcalculations.
What types of jobs do you think would suit a person with this intelligence? Scientists, engineers, computer programmers,
researchers, accountants, mathematicians
Visual / Spatial Intelligence
looking at pictures
watching movies
drawing
painting
Picture smart
Ability to perceive the visual.
These learners tend to think in
pictures and need to create vivid
mental images to retain
information.
They enjoy looking at maps,
pictures and movies.
Their skills include:
Puzzle building, understanding
charts and graphs, a good sense of
direction, painting, creating visual
metaphors and analogies,
manipulating images, constructing,
fixing, interpreting visual images.
What types of jobs do you think would suit a person with this intelligence?navigators, sculptors, visual artists, inventors,
architects, interior designers, mechanics,
engineers
Bodily – Kinaesthetic Intelligence
Dancing
Acting
Exercising
Swimming
Sculpting
Building
Body smart
Bodily/Kinesthetic IntelligenceAbility to control bodymovements and handle objectsskillfully. These learners express themselvesthrough movement. They have agood sense of balance and eyehand co-ordination. (e.g. ball play, balancing beams).
Through interacting with the spacearound them, they are able toremember and process information.
Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence
Their skills include:
dancing, physical co-ordination,
sports, hands-on experimentation,
using body language, crafts, acting,
miming, using their hands to create
or build, expressing emotions
through the body.
What types of jobs do you think would suit a person with this intelligence?Athletes, physical education teachers, dancers,
actors, firefighters, artisans
Musical Intelligence
Playing music
Listening to music
Singing
Music smart
Musical/Rhythmic Intelligence
Ability to produce and appreciate music. These musically inclined learners thinkin sounds and patterns. They respondto music. Many are extremely sensitive to environmental sounds(e.g. crickets, bells, dripping taps).
Their skills include:singing, whistling, playing musical instruments, recognizing tonal patterns, remembering melodies, understandingthe structure and rhythm of music
What types of jobs do you think would suit a person with this intelligence?musician, disc jockey, singer, composer
Interpersonal Intelligence
Socialising with people
Doing things with other
people
Working in teams
People smart
Interpersonal IntelligenceAbility to relate and understandothers. These learners try to see thingsfrom other people's point of view inorder to understand how they thinkand feel. They often have an ability to sensefeelings. They use both verbal and non-verbal language to opencommunication.
Their skills include:seeing things from other perspectives, listening, understanding other people's moods and feelings, counselling, building trust, establishing positive relations with other people.
What types of jobs do you think would suit a person with this intelligence?Counsellor, salesperson, politician, business
person, teacher
Intrapersonal IntelligenceSpending time alone
Meditating
Writing a diary or journal
Day-dreaming
Reflecting
Self smart
Intrapersonal IntelligenceAbility to self-reflect and be awareof one's inner state of being. These learners try to understandtheir inner feelings, dreams, relationships with others, andstrengths and weaknesses.
Their Skills include:Recognising their own strengths andweaknesses, reflecting and analysingthemselves, awareness of their innerfeelings, desires and dreams, evaluatingtheir thinking patterns, reasoning withthemselves, understanding their role inrelationship to others.
What types of jobs do you think would suit a person with this intelligence?Researchers, theorists, philosophers, religious
leaders
Naturalist Intelligence
Collecting rocks
Collecting insects
Observing animals
Planting trees
Spending time in Nature
Nature smart
Naturalist IntelligenceAbility to identify and classify patterns in
nature. During our prehistory, hunter/gathererswould rely on naturalist intelligence toidentify what flora and fauna were edible.
Today, naturalist intelligence may be seenin the way we relate to our surroundingsand the role each part of our surroundingsplay. People who are sensitive to changesin weather patterns or are adept atdistinguishing nuances between largenumbers of similar objects may be
expressing naturalist intelligence abilities.
What types of jobs do you think would suit a person with this intelligence?Environmentalist, farmer, botanist, chef
