Multiple Intelligences Robert Sternberg and Howard Gardner Sternbergs Triarchic Theory of Intelligence There are three distinct forms of intelligence. Three forms of intelligence 1.Analytic Intelligence= refers to the mental processes used in learning how to solve problems, such as picking a problem- solving strategy and applying it. 2.Creative Intelligence= is the ability to deal with novel situations by drawing on existing skills and knowledge. Inventive 3.Practical Intelligence= involves the ability to adapt to what is commonly called street smarts. Howard Gardner Theory of Multiple Intelligence (MI) Theory Different mental abilities are biologically distinct and controlled by different parts of the brain. Support for the theory 1. Examined the skills and products that are valued in different cultures. 2.Studied brain-damaged individuals, noting that some mental abilities are spared when others are lost. Continue from previous slide 3. Studied people with Savant syndrome: the presence of an exceptional skill despite otherwise limited abilities. Score low on IQ tests. Ex. Kim Peak, knew 7,600 books by heart, all U.S. area codes, zip codes, and local TV stations. Continue from previous slide 4 in 5 people w/ S.D. are males. Many also have autism. Matt Savage (16), jazz pianist, has his own band. Alonzo Clemons, create perfect replicas of any animal he briefly (seconds) sees.
