PRECAUTIONS

LASER OPERATION

The optical transmitters used in CFO systems utilise class 1 and class 3a laser diodes, as well as class 3a LEDproducts. Due to the invisible beam radiation emitted by these components, all necessary safety instructions mustbe followed during installation and maintenance work. In a properly closed system, the normal operation of thesecomponents does not cause any radiation danger.

To avoid direct or reflected eye exposure to the beam

- never open the fibre connector under system operation- never look at the open fibre connector output or open fibre cable- never leave fibre connection or fibre cable open or without cover

CAUTION:CLASS 1 AND 3A LASER PRODUCTS, AND CLASS 3A LED PRODUCTS

DO NOT STARE INTO BEAM OR VIEW DIRECTLY WITH OPTICAL INSTRUMENTSAPPLICABLE STANDARDS IEC825-1: 1993 AND IEC825-2: 1993

INSTALLATION ENVIRONMENT

The permitted operating temperature for all CFO series units is -10...+50 oC. The permitted humidity can be inrange 0...90 % in non-condensing conditions. The permitted storage temperature for CFO series units is -30...+70oC.

FIBRE OPTIC CABLES

The CFO 500, CFO 700 and CFO 800 systems are designed to operate at a wavelength of 1310 nm (1550 nm) ina 9/125 um single mode fibre. FC/PC-type fibre connectors are to be used in all cases.

The CFO 100 and CFO 200 systems are designed to operate at a wavelength of 860 nm in 62.5/125 um or 50/125um multimode fibres ST -type fibre connectors are to be used in all cases.

The overall performance of CFO systems is greatly affected by the fibre optic cable installation itself. The environ-ment and nature of correct installations are not covered in this handbook, however it should be noted that thecable itself must be equipped with the correct connectors and meet the correct specifications in order that CFOperformance specifications are themselves met. Further advice and assistance concerning fibre optic cable typesand their installation is available from Teleste.

CFO UNIT ADJUSTMENT

OUTPUT AND INPUT CHANNELS

In programmable channel units, the output or input chan-nels can set using the rotary switches in the front panel. The upper rotary switch selects the first digit of the chan-nel number and the lower rotary switch selects the sec-ond. In the picture to the right, the unit has been set to achannel 23.

Standard programmable CFO units can be set to chan-nels between 01 and 86. Channels in the range of 87...99are optional. Setting the channel to “00” sets the unit tostand-by mode.

The channel allocation table is presented on the follow-ing pages.

SPECIAL FUNCTIONS

The main adjustments and indicator lights are locatedon the front panel of the unit. Special functions are op-erated by the means of DIP switches which are posi-tioned on the upper and/or lower side of the unit.(see next page)

CFO-SERIES ALARM AND CONTROL SIGNALS

GENERAL

Units in CFO-series have remote alarm and control signals together with led displays showing status of the units. In CSR 014 frames, each slot has four input/output lines connected to a controller slot. Two bus alarm lines areused for combining individual alarms into rack alarm signals.Alarms are active, low open collector outputs, with the capability of 30 V/10 mA switching. Control inputs areequivalent active low open collector inputs.

A-ALARM

An A-alarm indicates a hardware failure in the unit. In case of an A-alarm, after checking that the input or outputchannel selection is within the specified range, the unit should be sent for service.A-alarms are indicated by the red LED-display on the front panel.

B-ALARM

A B-alarm indicates a failure in transmission caused by a problem in the incoming signal. Such a problem may bedue to a missing or a too high input signal.

A- AND B-ALARM BUSES

Combined alarm signals from each unit are combined in the A- and B-alarm bus lines. The output is of the opencollector type. Alarms from multiple racks can be combined to give a station alarm output.

CONTROL INPUTS

Units have control inputs for switching RF carrier, RF modulation, RF output or optical output.

TEST POINT OUTPUTSSome units have test point outputs for laser bias current, optical input level, demodulator AGC voltage etc. Testpoints are located on the rear side of CSR-frame mother boards.

POWER SUPPLY STATUS

The CPS 372 power supply model has a voltage sense output, which is coupled to a controller slot. The controller unit detects the power supply status, and in case of failure, activates the PSU alarm.

BACKUP POWER SUPPLIES

All power supplies in a station with multiple frames can be coupled in parallel in order to provide back-up.Externally regulated DC of between +11.5 and +13 V can also be coupled to a frame.

INSTALLATION MECHANICS

STANDARD INSTALLATION FRAMES

The CFO system’s basic installation frame consists of a structure whose dimensions are 19" x 3U x 250 mm.This standard frame contains slots for a power supply, an open collector or a relay output alarms card, and spacefor 14 standard size units. The dimensions for a single standard plug-in unit are 128 X 190 X 25 mm (5 HP).Special ventilation units are needed between frames if several installation frames are installed in same cabinet.

The need for intermediate cables has been minimised. All internal signals are connected to units via the installa-tion frame’s mother board (which has a combiner/splitter unit installed). Intermediate cables are only used whenseveral installation frames are cabled together.

CFO series installation frames fulfill EMC standard requirements. The EN 50081-1 emission requirement is guar-anteed to be met in all frames. Due to immunity requirements, there are two frame types available: the standardCSR 014 model for EN 50082-1, and the enhanced model, designed for EN 50082-2 requirements.

The supply power is provided by a plug-in power supply, which is installed in the installation frame together withthe signalling units. If multiple frames are used in the system, the power supplies can be connected together forpower back-up purposes.

EXPANDED INSTALLATION FRAMES

The CSR 316 expanded installation frame contains slots for two power supplies (primary and backup), an opencollector or relay output alarms card, and space for 16 standard (5 HP) size units. If wider 10 HP size units areused (e.g. CFO 800), there will be space for 8 units in the frame. EMC immunity meets EN 50082-1 requirements.

STAND-ALONE MODULE ADAPTERS

In simple installations, such as single channel applications, a wall-mounted module adapter can be used forinstallation. The CMA 011 module adapter contains a position for one standard CFO plug-in unit. The moduleadapter contains connections for video baseband input and output (needed in sub-carrier operations) as well asoutputs for alarm signals. The supply voltage is provided by a separate mains voltage adapter.

TRANSMITTER SECTION OF A BASIC CFO 700 MULTICHANNEL SYSTEM

As seen in the example below, a single transmitting end frame (CSR 014), with a maximum of 13 video channels, includes an FM video modulator (CVM 201) for each channel, wide band combiners (e.g. CWC 113) and anoptical transmitter (e.g. COT 232).

Audio and data channels can be added with dual sub-carrier modulators (CSM 111). A dual sub-carrier modulatorgenerates two sub-carriers, which are modulated by incoming audio or data signals. The output of the modulatoris fed to the assigned video modulator unit through the rack’s back board.

The FM video modulator’s output signals are combined together by the means of a wide band passive combinerafter which the combined signal is fed through to an optical transmitter.

When more than a single installation frame is required for use, a wide band amplifier (CWA 230), a coaxial cable(e.g. CCC 220) and a wide band coupler (CWA 200) can be used for combining multiple frames.

SINGLE CHANNEL UNITS WITH A BASIC CFO 700 MULTICHANNEL SYSTEM,TRANSMITTER SITE

The example below shows a single transmitting end frame (CSR 014) with the same equipment as seen in theprevious transmitter example, but with a limited number of CFO 700 units in order that three other single channelunits can be shown as being installed in the same frame.

The CFO 700 system consists of an FM video modulator (CVM 201), dual audio sub-carrier modulators (CSM111), a wide band combiner (CWC 108) and an optical transmitter (e.g. COT 232).

The single channel units consist of a CRT 531 (CFO 500) video transmitter, a CRT 212 (CFO 200) video transmit-ter and data receiver, and a CRX 831 (CFO 800) bi-directional multisignal transceiver. These units are installed inthe same frame, but they are not connected to the wideband combiner. Instead, they each have their own indi-vidual optical fibres (CRT 212; two fibres) and thus communicate with the receiver site independently.

SINGLE CHANNEL UNITS WITH A BASIC CFO 700 MULTICHANNEL SYSTEM,RECEIVER SITE

Below is an example of a single transmitting end frame (CSR 014) containing the same equipment as seen in theprevious receiver example, excepting that the number of CFO 700 units is limited in order that three other singlechannel units can be installed in the same frame.

The CFO 700 receiver system consists of an optical receiver (COR 231), a wide band splitter (CWC 108), FMvideo demodulators (CVD 201) and dual audio sub-carrier demodulators (CSD 111).

The single channel units in the example are a CRR 531 (CFO 500) video receiver, a CRR 212 (CFO 200) videoreceiver and data transmitter, and a CRX 831 (CFO 800) bi-directional multisignal transceiver. These units areinstalled in the same frame, but they are not connected to the wideband splitter. Instead each unit has its ownoptical fibre (CRT 212; two fibres) and thud each communicates with the transmitter site independently.

OPTICAL SPLITTERCOS 132, COS 633

GENERAL

Models COS 133/633 are optical splitters, for use withall standard size CFO circuit boards. Both splitters operate on a wavelength of 1310 nm,and use FC/PC-type connectors.

The two modules are identical except for the signalratios after splitting; the COS 133 splits the signal to aratio of 50% / 50%, whereas the COS 633 split ratiois 70%/30%.(In the COS 633 model, the 70% optical I/O port issituated above the 30% optical I/O port)

FRAME INSTALLATION

The module is to be pushed along the guide rails intothe installation frame (e.g. CSR 014) and securedwith the locking srews(2 pcs). The unit can be freely positioned in anyposition in the frame.

FIBRE CONNECTIONS

When installing the fibre optic cables do not exceed theminimum bending radius when connecting the cablesto the system.

Note! For correct optical operation ensure that all opticalconnectors are cleaned immediately before mating.Connectors should always be cleaned using highpurity alcohol (e.g. methyl or isopropyl alcohol).

Dry the surfaces using clean compressed air or otherequivalent pressurised gas.

The female ST optical connectors on the equipmentshouldalways be protected with dustcaps when there is nofibre inserted.
