Don’t Quit Author Unknown
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists & turns, As every one of us sometimes
learns, And many a fellow, turns about When he might have won
had he stuck it out. Don't give up, though the pace
seems slow You may succeed, with another
blow.
Often the goal is nearer than It seems to a faint and faltering
man; Often the struggler has given up When he might have captured the
victor's cup; And he learned too late when
the night came down, How close he was to the golden
crown.
Success is failure turned inside out, The silver tint in the clouds of
doubt. And you never can tell how close
you are, It might be near, when it seems afar; So, stick to the fight when you're
hardest hit; It's when things seem worst
that you must not quit.

3 Months & Counting…
BOOK BOX
OUTSIDE
Last month, Christ
Child Society (CCS),
installed a ‘Book Box’ on our prop-
erty at the entrance off the Orle-
ans Street parking lot. At first
glance, one might mistake it for a
bird house, but a closer look re-
veals lots of books inside for chil-
dren for ages 5 to 12. The purpose
of the program (offering free
books) is to encourage reading and
help build literacy among our
youth.
The book box is stocked with
books and maintained by CCS.
However, if you would like to do-
nate children’s books, please DO
NOT put them in the box itself.
Rather, bring the books inside,
where we have a tote in the Wel-
come Center to collect books for
this purpose.

Beware A Scam… “I just got a call from an ‘860’ (CT) area code. Thinking it was someone I knew, I answered. It was a man claiming to be from customer service (didn’t say what company, only “customer service.”) The first thing he asked was “Can you hear me?” I re-membered something I saw on Facebook saying people are calling and asking if you can hear them, then using the recording of your “yes” reply as a way to sign you up for all kinds of stuff. So, I replied, “I hear you.” To which he again asked, “So you can hear me?” I said, “I hear you.” He said, “I just need a yes or no.” I repeated, “I hear you.” He hung up. Thanks to whoever posted that story. I probably would have answered ‘yes’ the first time he asked.

A Women’s Retreat sponsored by The Women’s Ministry
Written by Sis. Angela Westbrook
Hey Ladies,
What are your thoughts on attending a 2020 Women's Retreat? Our theme is "Going to the Beach." We will be going to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina during their off-peak season next year to meet up with a few other women's ministry groups for a weekend of fun as we share our stories and testimonies.
Currently, it is in the planning stages along with the other churches down south, but you can start saving your pennies so you will be prepared when it goes into action. If you’re interested in setting up a vacation club this year, you can speak to Sis. Kasha' Gabriel with the Pioneer Valley Credit Union for details.
This will be a wonderful experience for all the ladies to get to know one another better. More information will be coming out soon.
MT. ZION TO OFFER A
TEACHERS SUPER STORE
Teachers often spend their own resources to provide students with supplies. (Nationally, it’s about $480 per year). This year, Mt. Zion plans to help.
At the start of the school year (August & September), several organizations provide supplies to teachers and their classrooms. Our plan is to replenish those supplies at the start of the second half of the year (December or January). Once a date is set, we will invite local teachers to come to Mt. Zion for a day and “shop for free.”
We are asking members to donate and bring in school supplies. All supplies will be stored here at the Church until the date of the event. Help us help our teachers help our students.
The Newsletter Ministry is heading up this project.

August Children's Church
Children's Church was held Sunday, August 11, 2019 and was attended by eight (8) kids & three (3) adults. This month's les-son was about Jesus feeding the 5000. We focused on how the little boy gave Jesus his lunch and how Jesus used what He was given to perform a miracle. The children learned that the things we think are small, like giving $1 in the offering plate, or giving our old clothes/toys away, can be turned into something bigger when we give it to Jesus. They also learned that even though they are young, they can be used by Jesus to do something big, just like the small boy in the story. Then the children decorated a lunch bag and wrote down 3 things they could give to Jesus now while they are young that they can use to make a difference. After our snack we prayed and dismissed.
2019 Back-to-School Week Activities:
FREE HAIRCUTS Written by Sis. Stephanie Fahey
On Monday, August 19th, the Youth Ministry offered free haircuts to youth as they prepared to go back to school. Seven (7) young boys received either a haircut, line-up, or a fade from Min. James Coppedge. Min. Coppedge did an awesome job and the boys were satisfied as well as their parents. Light refreshments were served. Youth Ministry Leaders, Sis. Mary Moore and Sis. Stephanie Fahey were present to help where needed.
SUMMER MOVIE CLUB AT EASTFIELD MALL On Wednesday, August 21st, the Youth Ministry sponsored a trip to the Eastfield Mall movies. Eight (8) youth and six (6) adults were ready to watch "Peter Rabbit" but after sitting in the theater for 10 minutes, no movie was on the screen. We were getting a little disappointed but cheered up after the theater attendant told us we would be watching the new "Angry Birds 2" movie since "Peter Rabbit" would not start. After a few more hiccups, the movie finally began, and we settled in with our snacks to watch the movie. We won't give any spoilers, but it was a good movie. After the movie was over, we returned to the church to have lunch at the Soup Kitchen. We were treated to outstanding service by our Soup Kitchen Ministry and enjoyed cold cuts, chips, cookies, and drinks. Special thanks to Sis Mimmie & the Soup Kitchen Ministry and to our van driver, Dea. Dan Jones.
COLLEGE PREP 101 College Prep 101 was held Wednesday. August 21st at 6:30 pm. Our speaker was Mt. Zion's own Sis. Akisha Maddox. Sis. Maddox works at AIC in the Admissions Department and was excited to come in and speak with our youth. We had five (5) adults and nine (9) youth of middle to high school age in attendance to learn some steps to prepare for college. The youth watched a video titled, "College Doesn't Just Happen," and then discussed what they learned. They also asked very good questions based on the video. In case you were unable to attend, here's a summary of what was discussed:
⁃ Step 1: Be a Pain--in a good way: Ask questions about college & others’ experiences when they were in college. Find adults that can help you, like a guidance counselor or your parents.
⁃ Step 2: Push Yourself: Take challenging courses while you are in middle and high school. Try Advanced or Honor classes and make sure you have good time management.
⁃ Step 3: Find the right fit: Think about what field you want to study in college. Research colleges that offer the field you would like to study. Plan to visit multiple colleges to see which is the best fit for you.
⁃ Step 4: Put your hands on some cash: Research scholarship and grant awards. If you are working, save your money to use for school. Try not to spend money on things you don't need and look for things you can give up spending money on to save for college.
Thank you to Sis. Akisha for taking the time to speak with our youth and all the Youth Ministry leaders that helped volunteer preparing refreshments and serving.
IT'S OK TO NOT BE OK On Friday, August 23rd, we held our final program for Back-to-School Week. "It's Ok to Not be Ok" was focused on youth men-tal health. Our speaker was Min. David Lewis, Sr. Min. Lewis is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and Clinical Director of The African Diaspora Mental Health Association here in Springfield. Min. Lewis spoke to the kids about how to rec-ognize signs of mental health issues, told them who they could ask for help from, and discussed the stigma around seeking help for mental health issues and barriers to treatment. After a dinner of wraps, chips, veggies, and assorted desserts served by the Youth Ministry leaders, we played a few rounds of Back-to-School bingo. Zachary Caudle, Jordan Holmes, and Tracetta Caudle were the winners and received Amazon gift cards for their prize. This topic will be revisited throughout the year with different activities. Thank you to all who attended the various events this week.

This is Priceless
Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the much older lady that she should bring her own grocery bags, because plastic bags are not good for the environment.
The woman apologized to the young girl and explained, “We didn’t have this ‘green thing’ back in my earlier days.”
The young clerk responded, “That’s our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations.”
The older lady said that she was right—our generation didn’t have the ‘green thing’ in its day. The older lady went on to explain: “Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So, they really were recy-cled.
But we didn’t have the ‘green thing’ back in our day. Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags that we reused for numerous things. Most memorable besides household garbage bags was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our schoolbooks. This was to ensure that the public property (the books provided by the school) was not defaced by our scibblings. Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags.
But too bad we didn’t do the ‘green thing’ back then. We walked up stairs because we didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300+horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn’t have the ‘green thing’ in our day.
Back then, we washed the baby’s diapers because we didn’t have the throw away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-grabbing machine burning up 220 volts. Wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in the early days.
Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn’t have the ‘green thing’ back in our day.
Back then we had one TV, or radio, in the house—not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana.
In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us.
When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used to wad up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.
Back then, we didn’t fire us an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power.
We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she’s right, we didn’t have the ‘green thing’ back then.
We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of wa-ter. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blade in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn’t have the ‘green thing’ back then.
Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service in the family’s $45,000 SUV or van, which cost what a whole house did before the ‘green thing.’
We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint.
But isn’t it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn’t have the ‘green thing’ back then?
