34th Church Convention!

Theme: The Plan God Has For You

Text: 1 Samuel 16: 6-13

― And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked at Eliab, and said,

Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him. But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look

not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused

him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh at the outward appear-

ance , but the Lord looketh on the heart. Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made

him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this. Then

Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.

Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto

Jesse, the Lord hath not chosen these. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all

they children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he

keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will

not sit down until he come hither. And he sent ,and brought him in. Now he was

ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord

said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and

anointed him in the midst of his brethren: And the Spirit of the Lord came upon

David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.‖

Food for thought:

...And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took a harp and played

with his hand: So Saul was refreshed , and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him…‖

1 Samuel 16:23

There are a few people who understand the effect of music on the mind. The moods of the listeners

change as they listen to various kinds of music. Do you want an example? Put a young man in a car and

let him drive it while listening to fast paced rock music, and see how he drives. Actual tests have

proved that music has a direct influence of the pulse rate, blood pressure, and the nervous system.

Whatever a person allows to enter occupy his/her mind will sooner or later determine his

speech and his actions.

As children of God, I urge you to be more attentive and watchful of the type of music that you allow

into your spirit. Don’t allow yourself to be like a garbage disposal: garbage in, garbage out. Choose to

digest music that brings glory to God, and joy to your souls. Be Blessed!

Q: What encourages you to continue in the path that God has laid out for you?

A: To know there is more in store: We have not even scratched the surface. Also, know-

ing that there’s been adults that has continually prayed for me as a child. As I witnessed

the next generation growing up, I’m here to support them as well.

Q: Can you give an encouragement to those who are struggling to keep on in Christ?

A: That is fitting because our theme is ―The Plan God Has For You‖, meaning our life has

a purpose. Our hope is based on our faith in the Lord, and what He has done for us on

Calvary’s cross. Even as we experience struggles we know that we have the victory.―For I

reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the

glory which shall be revealed in us.‖-Romans 8: 18

Q: You’re being ordained as a Minister of the Gospel on October 16th,

2011. What Bible verse will best describe this place where God has

brought you?

A: Jeremiah 1:5-10 which states ―Before I formed thee in the belly I knew

thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee a

prophet unto nations. Then said I, Ah, Lord God! Behold I cannot speak: for

I am a child. But the Lord said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt

go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their

faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord. Then the Lord put forth his hand and touched

my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. See, I have this day

set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to

throw down, to build and to plant.‖

Also, the latter part of 1 Samuel 16: 12 which states ―...and the Lord said arise, anoint him; for

this is he.‖

Q: If God revealed to you the plans for your life a long time ago, do you think you would have stuck

to His plans?

A: No. I wouldn’t have been prepared. It’s all according to God’s timing.

Q: In your opinion, why is it a great thing for us to trust God?

A: It is a great thing to trust God because he is the author and finisher of our faith. Anyone who begins

a new work and can finish it shows He’s faithful.

The Plan God Has for You: Q & A

Q: When did God’s plan for your life become clear to you?

A: It became clear though a vision in 1967. That’s when I was called to the

ministry.

Q: How important is obedience in following where God leads you?

A: Obedience is very important because it is the source of my success.

-Bishop R. Austin

Interviewed by Sis. Whitney Collins.

Page 5 MT. OLIVE PENTECOSTAL CHURCH OF FAITH

Sometimes we go through life and everything is perfect and going so well,

when suddenly chaos breaks out. We pull out the little bit of hair that we have

on our heads and the rest suddenly turns to gray. Just remember, God still has

plans for you. God says in his word, ―I have loved thee with an everlasting

love, therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee‖ (Jeremiah 31:3). He is

saying to us that He loves us now and He always will love us even to the end

of the world if we remain true and faithful.

God is saying , ―I have hedged you in with my love. No power on earth will

overcome you. Even though it may look so for a little while, greater is He that

is in you than he that is in the world.‖ Job went through the greatest trial of his

life. He lost everything he had, but he held on to the greatest thing, God Himself. This made it

possible for him to win the victory. We have the greatest thing in our lives, the love of Jesus. This

makes it possible for us also to get the victory.

Sometimes, like in the days of Jeremiah, we may tend to become complacent and disobedient, and

God has to chastise us, but if we repent and hearken to the voice of God, He will forgive us and

heal us. Jeremiah 29: 11-14 tells us, ―For I know the thoughts that I think towards you―, saith the

Lord, ―thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then ye shall call upon me,

and ye shall go and pray unto me and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me,

when ye shall search for me with all your heart. And I will be found of you,‖ saith the Lord, (etc).

He also told Jeremiah, in Jeremiah 1:5, ―Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee; and before

thou camest forth from the womb I sanctified thee and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.‖

It was God’s purpose for us to be here and He will fulfill His purpose in us.

Therefore brethren, keep the faith, never give up and God will lead you to the place where He has

designated for you to go, for He has good plans for you.

Be Blessed!

God’s Plan For You by Sis. Colleen Marshall

Page 6 MT. OLIVE PENTECOSTAL CHURCH OF FAITH ENDEAVOR

WHAT YOU DO MATTERS: THERE IS A PURPOSE IN

YOUR LIFE!

Many people go through life feeling discouraged about themselves

and thinking they do not have a purpose in life. But that's not true.

Whoever you are—whatever your life experiences, talents, physi-

cal ability, or role—you have a purpose.

Let's take a look at one of my favorite verses in the Bible:

You Have a Purpose: God Has Great Plans For You!

4. You are created to spread the Gos-

pel.

Matthew 28: 19-20— ―Go ye therefore,

and teach all nations, baptizing them in

the name of the Father, and of the Son,

and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to

observe all things whatsoever I have

commanded you: and lo, I am with you

always, even unto the end of the world.‖

There are countless souls on the highway

to eternal death—and with the help of the

Holy Spirit, YOU have the power to turn

them around!

I pray that this is a wake up call to many

to use the gifts stored up within you. You

were NOT an accident, because we all

know that God makes NO mistakes in his

doings. It would be a shame to leave this

earth without fulfilling not ONE of your

purposes! Time is ticking! Get to work

saints!!

1. You were created to know God!

John 14: 6— ―Jesus saith unto him, I am the

way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh

unto the Father, but by me.‖ One of our pur-

poses in life is to get close to God, and the Bi-

ble tells us that this can only be done through

His Son, Jesus Christ!

2. You were created for God’s glory.

Isaiah 43: 6-7— ―I will say to the north, Give

up. And to the south, Keep not back: bring my

sons from afar, and my daughters from the

ends of the earth. Even everyone that is called

by my name: for I have created him for my

glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made

him.‖One of the greatest purposes we serve

here on earth, is to give God all the glory and

praise that He deserves.

3. You are created to praise God.

1 Chronicles 16:25— ―For GREAT is the

Lord, and greatly to be praised: He also is to be

feared above all gods.‖The fact that God is the

TRUE and LIVING God, above all else, calls

for true worship and praise from his people.

Bishop Mitchell Taylor has lived in and around Queensbridge Houses for the past

forty-three years. In 1991, he was installed as Senior Pastor of the Center of Hope

International (COHI), a non-denominational church adjacent to the Queensbridge

Houses. For over a decade, COHI has provided a safe place for hundreds of chil-

dren in its after-school program and has fed thousands of families each year

through its food pantry.

In 2004, convinced that a single church would not be able to mitigate the mam-

moth issues facing public housing residents, Bishop Taylor founded the East

River Development Alliance (ERDA). In founding ERDA, Bishop Taylor has

created a true alliance of religious leaders, government officials, educators, busi-

ness owners, and residents all working together to effect neighborhood improve-

ment and expand economic opportunity for the 30,000 residents living in Queensbridge, Ravens-

wood, Astoria, and Woodside public housing developments. In December 2009, ERDA received the

federal charter for the ERDA Federal Credit Union (FCU) – the first FCU chartered in NYC in 10

years, the first in Queens in 30 years, and the first chartered nationally in the Obama administration.

Bishop Taylor has been profiled by the New York Times, CNN, NPR, and other leading media out-

lets for his leadership and ministry. Bishop Taylor is also a frequent and host of the Trinity Broadcast

Network. He has received prestigious awards including the New York City Public Library’s Brooke

Astor Award, NYC Neighborhood Achievement Leadership Award, and the JCRC of New York

Martin Luther King Award. He was also a participant in the United Way Executive Fellows Pro-

gram, and was chosen to participate in the highly competitive Achieving Excellence in Community

Development program led by Neighborworks and Harvard University Kennedy School of Govern-

ment.

Bishop Taylor is the author of Unbroken Promises – Learning to Trust Again, published by Whitaker

House (2003). He currently serves as a Commissioner for the City of New York on the Civilian

Complaint Review Board.
