Believer’sbaptism

Baptism is today defined asa Christian rite of admission andadoption, almost invariably withthe use of water, into Christianitywhich may be performed by achurch approved ministerby sprinkling or pouring water onthe head, or by immersion inwater either partially orcompletely.

Baptism was used by the Jewsand called Tevilah which is a fullbody immersion. It is a bathused for the purpose of ritualimmersion in Judaism to achieveritual purity.

The Greek verb báptō meaning"dip", from which theverb baptízō is derived, had thegeneral usage of "immersion,""going under" as in a material ina liquid dye or "perishing" as in aship sinking or a persondrowning.

The Believer’s Baptism

“Now, we immerse a person orthing in a liquid. We cannot saywith propriety, "immerse withwater," for the water is theelement in which the person orthing is plunged.” (A Catechismof Christian Baptism by J. D.Cramp D.D. 1866).

Therefore, Luke 3:16 in KJVsays, “John answered, sayingunto them all, I indeed baptizeyou with water” wheretranslators, have added theword “with.” [Please look at thefootnotes of your bible].

It ought to have been "baptizein water", William Tyndale, whowas killed for translating thebible into English, did this in1525. His translation reads, " Ibaptyse you in water." This wasdifficult for the church of thetime who still baptised childrenand adults by sprinkling (Greekword Rhantizo) and Pouring(Greek word Ekcheo).

Because of the accuracy of hisinterpretation copies of his bible wereburnt on the steps of St. PaulsCathedral and he was executed by theHoly Roman Empire in Netherlands bybeing burnt at the stake on the 6thOctober 1536 aged 42.

The problem for the establishedchurches was that if the bible could beread and understood by commonpeople the role and power of thechurch would change radically. Yet noone could hold back the tide and thebible today is translated into more than3324 languages according to theUnited Bible Societies.

Having discovered what the wordmeans, let us examine the practice inour church.

WEEK 1: Believer’s Baptism

Every Christian should know and understand howsomeone becomes a believer.Mark 1615-17 NIV15 He said to them, “Go into all the world andpreach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoeverbelieves and is baptized will be saved, but whoev-er does not believe will be condemned. 17 Andthese signs will accompany those who believe: Inmy name they will drive out demons; they willspeak in new tongues;

In part one we will look at what is meant by being abeliever. It has been said that just because youvisit a garage once a week it doesn’t mean you area motor car. In the same way going to church oncea week doesn’t make you a Christian (a believer).Christianity is first and foremost about relationshipsrather than rituals or regulations.

It is about the most important relationship of all,our relationship to God.

My NotesI think we were created to live in a lovingrelationship and until we find that relationship therewill always be something missing in our lives.

People have described this feeling as “a deep,deep void’ while others have spoken of a Jesusshaped hole in their heart.   I believe it was NeilDiamond who wrote the words

“But I got an emptiness deep insideAnd I've triedBut it won't let me goAnd I'm not a man who likes to swearBut I never caredFor the sound of being alone”

Years later he wrote the song pretty amazinggrace.

“Pretty amazing grace is what You showed mePretty amazing grace is who You areI was an empty vesselYou filled me up insideAnd with amazing grace restored my pride”

No matter how wonderful human relationships arethey cannot fill that void. People have tried tosatisfy that hunger with money, drugs, alcohol,sexual promiscuity and controlling behaviour butthese things only give short-lived instantgratification.

Jesus said he was the bread of life (John 6:35). He alone is the onewho can satisfy that hunger.

He satisfies our hunger for meaning and purpose.

Everyone at some point asks the question, “What am I here for, what isthe point?”Until we are in a living, personal relationship with God we can neverdiscover the true meaning and purpose for our lives.

He satisfies our hunger for life beyonddeath.

Most people do not like to think aboutdeath, we push those kinds of thoughtsaway. When we do this we fail to faceup to reality and death reveals ourfragility as human beings. Yet the bibletells us that God offers us eternal lifethrough Jesus Christ.

Peter tells us, that it was not with perishable things such as silver orgold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed downto you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, alamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation ofthe world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.

He satisfies our hunger for forgiveness.

We have all done things that are wrong.More than that there is a self-centredness about our lives which spoilsthem. Jesus tells us, ‘What comes out ofa person is what defiles them. For it isfrom within, out of a person’s heart, thatevil thoughts come – sexual immorality,theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice,

deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils comefrom inside and defile a person.

Our greatest need is for forgiveness and recognition. Just as a personwho has cancer needs a doctor whether he realises it or not, so we needforgiveness.

By his death on the cross Jesus made it possible for us to be forgivenand adopted as children of God. Through his sacrifice he has made away for a relationship with God. In this way he supplied the answer to ourdeepest need.

If you are hungry for god or simply more of God, remember the Psalmistwrote “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takesrefuge in him.”

Come to church this Sunday and taste something of God’s presence.

Baptism that is full immersion in water is closelylinked with believing in Jesus Christ. Somescriptures place them side by side as part ofbecoming a Christian:Mark 16:16   "Whoever believes and is baptised will

be saved, but whoever does notbelieve will be condemned."

Matt.28:19   "Therefore go and make disciples of allnations, baptising them in the name ofthe Father and of the Son and of theHoly Spirit."

This explains why water baptism is regarded ofbeing of such importance, it is a public declaration ofwhat has happened through believing in Christ.Please note Mark 16:16 that salvation is not basedon baptism but on faith in Jesus Christ.

Paul explains (Colossian 2: 11-12 TLB) When youcame to Christ, he set you free from your evildesires, not by a bodily operation of circumcision butby a spiritual operation, the baptism of yoursouls. For in baptism you see how your old, evilnature died with him and was buried with him; andthen you came up out of death with him into a newlife because you trusted the word of the mighty Godwho raised Christ from the dead.

Therefore Baptism is a symbolic way of showing that;a) that the old you has died with Jesusb) that the old you was buried in death with Jesusc) that the new, Christian (literally ‘little Christ’), you came up out of deathd) that the new you was raised to a new life with God as your parent,Jesus as your example, and the Holy Spirit as your guide and counsellorin the new life.Really simple to understand; you see a recognition of the truth of God’srevelation of redemption, not merely in a detached, historical sense, butin such a way that it radically changes the individual person when werecognise and accept the salvation offered in Jesus Christ, which issaving faith. There is no doubt that, logically, repentance and theknowledge of sin precedes the faith that yields to Christ in trusting love.

What does baptism do for thebeliever?

1. It is an act of obedience to Christ -a clear-cut demonstration that weknow and acknowledge our new Lord,who said: "Go therefore and makedisciples of all nations, baptising themin the name of the Father and of theSon and of the Holy Spirit, teachingthem to observe all that I havecommanded you." Matt.28:19-20.

There is great blessing and satisfaction in obeying the Lord. Ourbaptism will set a pattern of obedience to his Lordship in our lives aswhole.

2.There is a cutting away of the old nature as the dominant power inour lives. So God's new-born children today receive at their baptism aspiritual circumcision, or a circumcision of the heart. Like all  God'sblessings, this must be received by faith.

"In him also you were circumcised with acircumcision not made with hands, but in a(spiritual) circumcision (performed by) Christ, bystripping off the body of flesh (the whole corrupt,carnal nature with its passions and lusts). (Thusyou were circumcised when) you were buried withhim in (your) baptism, in which you were alsoraised with him (to a new life) through (your) faithin the working of God (as displayed) when heraised him up from the dead." Colossians.2:11-12Amplified Bible.

My Notes

Baptism is an establishing and consolidation in ourlives of all that Jesus has done for us. Let us justremind ourselves again what Jesus has done forus. Again this is from Colossians 2:13-15 (TPT)This “realm of death” describes our former state,for we were held in sin’s grasp. But now, we’vebeen resurrected out of that “realm of death” neverto return, for we are forever alive and forgiven of allour sins!He cancelled out every legal violation we had onour record and the old arrest warrant that stood toindict us. He erased it all—our sins, ourstained[b] soul—he deleted it all and they cannot beretrieved! Everything we once were in Adam hasbeen placed onto his cross and nailed permanentlythere as a public display of cancellation.Then Jesus made a public spectacle of all thepowers and principalities of darkness, strippingaway from them every weapon and all theirspiritual authority and power[d] to accuse us. Andby the power of the cross, Jesus led them aroundas prisoners in a procession of triumph. He was nottheir prisoner; they were his.

My NotesColossians 2:9-119 For in Christ there is all of God in a humanbody; 10 so you have everything when you haveChrist, and you are filled with God through yourunion with Christ. Because you trusted the word you became a newperson, with a new life of purpose and meaning, witha new hope and a new destiny. Baptism affirms whathas happened in your life and demonstrates thepromise to be like Jesus.

Week 3: The Promise of Believer’sBaptism

A New youFrench writer HenriBarbusse (1874-1935) tells of aconversationoverheardin a trench full ofwounded men duringthe First World War.One of themen, who knew heonly had minutes tolive says to one ofthe other men,

“Listen, Dominic, you’ve led a very bad life.Everywhere you are wanted bythe police. But there are no convictionsagainst me. My name is clear, so,here, take my wallet, take my papers, myidentity, take my good name, mylife and quickly, hand me your papers that Imay carry all your crimesaway with me in death.”The Good News is that through Jesus,God makes a similar offer. Somethingwonderful happens to us when we believe.When we are baptized, weidentify ourselves with Jesus in his death.We publicly declare what has happenedand our intention to strive to be like Jesusand follow God’s will for our lives.

A new LifePlease remember you were made anew through Jesus Christ by theHoly Spirit, but you have to learn to live this new life by faith. Wecontinually learn to live this new life for no one is perfect on this earth,as the perfectionist movement proved.

In baptism we rise up out of the water to live this new life, leavingbehind the old life. This is more than just symbolism; it is a personalstatement that you are free from the past. Jesus paid the ransom foryou. He gave you the freedom to live this new life.Jesus when he ascended to heaven did not leave us alone. He sentthe Holy Spirit to be with us. When the Holy Spirit lives with us and inus we have a new freedom.

2. The freedom to love.

John says “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). When welook at creation we can see that God loved all he had made. When welook back at the cross we can understand God’s love for us, you andme, personally. When the Holy Spirit came to live in us we experiencedthat love for ourselves.

As we do we receive a new love for God and for other people. We areset free to live a life of love, that is to live a life centred around lovingand serving Jesus and serving other people rather than a life centredaround ourselves.

1. The Freedom to know God.

This doesn’t mean we can know aboutGod. Rather that we can know God ina deep, personal way in a lovingrelationship. We can know him as ourLord, our Saviour, our Friend, ourFather.We can experience him walking withus through life caring for us, protectingus, he guides and keeps us safeforever.

3. The freedom to change.

Have you heard the saying ‘you can’tteach an old dog new tricks,’ meaningthat you can’t change. People havesaid “You are who you are, you can’tchange. It is passed on from yourparents, it is your DNA.

Now that is change! If you look at each of these9 fruit of the Holy Spirit and consider how muchof each is visible in your life, what would youscore on a scale of 1-10.

Now take the total and write that down here…….  This is your score out of 90.

Then in one month see how much you havechanged, grown and developed.

The good news is that with the help of the HolySpirit we can change. You became a brand newcreation in Christ when you were born again.Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth.Paul in the letter to the Galatians tells us that asthe Holy Spirit lives in us he produces love, joy,peace, patience, kindness, goodness,faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Week 4: Baptism in The Holy Spirit

Matthew 3:11 “I baptize you in water for repentance. But after mecomes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am notworthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire.”

There has been much debate over the term Baptism in the Holy Spirit,remembering it cannot be ‘with’ or ‘of’ but immersion means ‘in’.

Baptism in water and Baptism in the Spirit are meant to settle foreverfor the new believer, the question of their assurance of salvation. At ourwater baptism we put on the uniform of a soldier of Jesus Christ. Wehave changed sides and joined up. Everyone, men and devils, shouldnow know it. It’s now known to whom we belong, and whom we serve.

But it is baptism in the Spirit that gives us the available weapons weare to fight with – “And you will receive power when the Holy Spiritcomes upon you” (Acts 1:8). The Gk. word dunamis (‘power) – theword used here – is not related to justification or sanctification, but todynamification.

You cannot be a Christian without the Holy Spiritindwelling you (Rom. 8:9), but you can be aChristian without him empowering you to live lifeas you should (Eph.5:18). Jesus had told them towait for this at his Ascension. They waited just tendays, until Pentecost, the Jewish harvest festival.From that day on, they began to ‘reap’ the nationsfor Christ!

As Pentecostals we believe that the baptism(immersion) in the Holy Spirit is an enduement ofthe believer with power for service, the essential,biblical evidence of which is the speaking withother tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.

My Notes

Enduement is to invest or endow with somesupernatural gift, quality, or faculty. To empower aperson for service through that gift, quality orfaculty.

I know today that speaking in different tonguescan be embarrassing. I was in my officeoverlooking the retail store I managed. I wouldregularly pray in tongues over the store, I thinkthat it was this that made it the most profitablestore in the company. As I was praying my deputymanger walked in and heard me. Well he wasmore embarrassed than me, so I sat him downand explained it to him.

It made perfect sense to him that God would give you your personallanguage to speak to him. He thought it was quite obvious because itmatters not to God if it is the language of angels or of men, heunderstands us.

Bob Gordon asks the question why be baptised in the Holy Spirit?

This is how he answers1. It is commanded (Ephesians 5:18). We can only be filled to ourcapacity to receive. This may be very small at the start, but as we goon to maturity our capacity will increase. We therefore need to becontinually filled to whatever our capacity is at that moment.  Theword “be filled with the Spirit” in Ephesians 5:18 would be bettertranslated from the original Greek as “be continually filled with theSpirit”.

2. It gives new power and boldness to witness (Acts 1:8, Acts 2:14,Acts 4:31-33).

3. It is necessary for the release of the gifts of the Holy Spirit (ICorinthians 12:7-11)

4. It is necessary for the maximum evidence of the fruit of the HolySpirit (Galatians 5:22-23)

5. It is necessary to live a life for God’s glory (John 16:14).

6. It makes Jesus more real to us (John 15:26, John 16:13-15, Acts9:17).

7. It produces greater effectiveness in prayer (Romans 8:26-27, 1Corinthians 14:4 &15).

8. It enables true worship of God (Acts 2:11, Acts 10:46, John 4:23-24,Ephesians 5:18-20).

9. It brings a fresh understanding of and love for the word of God (John16:13, 1 Corinthians 2:9-16).

10. It gives us power to do what God calls us to do (Acts 1:8). Bob Gordon writes in conclusion.

The baptism in the Holy Spirit is given to those who seek it by faith(Galatians 3:2-5). It is not to be struggled for, agonised about, beggedfor, tarried for or bargained for. It is a free gift of the Lord Jesus Christ tohis disciples to enable them to walk as he did (Luke 11:11-13).

Week 5: Baptism in Fire

The dictionary tells us that the meaning of the phrase is

1. (Military) a soldier's first experience of battle, an initiation to the artof war and is described as baptism by fire.

2. Any initiating ordeal or experience. Such as starting a new job ortask in difficult circumstances is described as a baptism with fire:

3. (Ecclesiastical Terms) Christianity the penetration of the Holy Ghostinto the human spirit to purify, consecrate, and strengthen it, as was believed to  have occurred initially at Pentecost.

As we can now easily identify that the correct wording with baptism is“in”, we can start to grasp the enormity of the promise.

What we now see in Matthew 3:11-12 is the dual work of the HolySpirit as identified on the Day of Pentecost. Acts 2:1-4 from ThePassion Translation;“On the day Pentecost was being fulfilled, all the disciples weregathered in one place. Suddenly they heard the sound of a violentblast of wind rushing into the house from out of the heavenly realm.The roar of the wind was so overpowering it was all anyone could bear!

Then all at once a pillar of fire appeared before theireyes. It separated into tongues of fire thatengulfed each one of them. They were all filled andequipped with the Holy Spirit and were inspired tospeak in tongues—empowered by the Spirit to speakin languages they had never learned!”

Empowerment.This empowerment by the baptism in the Holy Spirit,we have an inspired boldness, there is the release ofspiritual gifts in our lives as the Holy Spirit distributesthem.

My Notes

Sanctification.Louis Berkhof says, sanctification may be definedas that gracious and continuous operation of the HolySpirit, by which He delivers the justified sinner fromthe pollution of sin, renews his whole nature in theimage of God, and enables him to perform goodworks.

In our everyday life this process means that in thedifficulties and trials we face, God will enable us todevelop, change and grow through the experience.The Holy Spirit is at work strengthening and enablingeach of us.

The phrase baptism by fire or baptism of fire isa phrase originating from the wordsof John the Baptist in Matthew 3:11-12

“I baptise you with[a] water for repentance. Butafter me comes one who is more powerful thanI, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. Hewill baptise you with[b] the Holy Spirit and fire.His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he willclear his threshing-floor, gathering his wheatinto the barn and burning up the chaff withunquenchable fire.’ “

Bob Gordon explains the chaff spoken of is anything that is worthless. Itis perhaps necessary for the growth of the wheat, but there comes atime when it is no longer needed.

God allows things to cross our path to cleanse and purify us. We needthe times of breaking and purifying so that God can change and mouldus into what he wants us to be. This process can be painful but in theend we become more like Jesus.

It is like the refiner’s firedescribed in Zechariah 13:9and Isaiah 48:10.

When the rubbish or dross isremoved from our lives webecome more whole in thatarea. Instead of beinghampered or entangled orhindered by that problem area,be it pride, addiction,immorality or simply wrongthinking, we can be purifiedfrom it and released more fullyinto what God has for us, andmake no mistake God has thebest for you and for me.

My NotesGod chose us for a purpose; these circumstancesand pressures in life help us, through our co-operation and the work of the Holy Spirit along inthe process of purifying our lives. As we trust Godwe are reminded he will not allow anything toodifficult for us to endure. It is for us to take onboard the pressure and let it change our lives sothat we can persevere and overcome.

Some Christians ask God to change them;pressure comes, they cry out to him for it to beremoved.

The baptism in the Holy Spirit and in fire givesus the power to live as disciples of Jesus and tochange to be more like him.

Now can I ask you to name three areas in whichyour life has been changed by the work of theHoly Spirit?

What we need to explain

The UK Government confirmed the move to step 4 of their Covid-19recovery roadmap from 19 July. This removes all legal requirements.Church worship is affected in the following ways:• All remaining limits on social contact are removed. People may meetwith whom and with as many as they wish, both indoors and outdoors.• Social distancing is no longer demanded in any setting.•  All  restrictions  on  the  numbers  at  and  activities within weddings,funerals and other life events are removed.• Face coverings are no longer mandatory in any setting.• There are no restrictions on singing.Nevertheless,  as  infections  continue  to  rise,  the  Governmentrecommends continuing caution. Good ventilation, diligence in hygiene,wearing a face covering in enclosed and crowded spaces, and limitingcontact  with  those we  do  not  live with,  are  all  noted  as  beneficialbehaviours.

In  the  light  of  this,  we  recommend  that  it  is  bothsensible and appropriate for the church to continue totake some measures to limit the spread of Covid-19.

Changes as from the 19th of July for Watton PentecostalChurch

Please be aware that:

● We will maintain a careful hygiene routine for our building.

● We will ask that on entering the building you sanitise your hands.

● We will ask people from different households to sit apart.

● You will no longer need to pre-book a seat but you must book in atthe door.

● We will expect that everyone will remain in their seats until the end ofthe service. Please do not move around the building to talk to others,remain seated.

● Pre-filled communion cups will be available at the door.

● We will ventilate the building as much as possible.

● We will expect those attending to avoid physical contact such ashandshakes and hugs inside the building.

● We will expect those attending to use face coverings.

● We will expect congregational singing to be at low volume levels andwith face coverings.

● FLOS will run but not every week.

● Please do not attend the service if you are feeling unwell.

Please follow the instructions to keepeveryone safe.
