Overview

This is a presentation of the Peruvian proposal to host the next MST meeting in Peru.

The list of potential organizers is presented along with their relationship to this meeting.

We present two alternatives for the types of facilities that could host the meeting.

Potential dates are also discussed. Finally a flavor of Peruvian tourism is summarized.

Why MST10 in Peru?

The pioneered MST work was first developed and tested at the Jicamarca Radio Observatory (JRO) in Peru.

Peruvian scientists and engineers have been heavily involved in different MST developments (radar techniques, signal processing, hardware and software development, etc.)

There are 3 existing wind profilers in Peru (two more will be operating at the beginning of 2001).

South America is one of the few regions in the World where MST radars are not well known, except for Peru.

Current MST radars in Peru

The Jicamarca MST radarLocated close to Lima.

The Piura wind profilerLocated on the Universidad de Piura Campus, ~1000 km north of Lima.

The Machu-Picchu MST radar Located in the Peruvian Antarctic station.

Potential local organizers (1)

Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) owns the JRO and it is heavily involved in the development of regional models for weather and climate prediction.

Universidad de Piura (UDEP) has been operating a wind profiler for the last 10 years. Five UDEP alumnae have done graduate studies in the USA related to MST work.

Ciencia Internacional (CI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to atmospheric radars science and technology. It operates the Jicamarca Radio Observatory.

Potential local organizers (2)

IGP, UDEP and CI have developed a MST radar for the Peruvian Antarctic station. In addition, a similar radar has been deployed on board the Peruvian research vessel Humboldt.

The persons involved from these institutions would be J. Chau (IGP and UDEP), A. Mabres (UDEP), M. Sarango (CI and JRO), and R. Woodman (IGP).

In addition, we will invite scientists from the Peruvian Meteorological community (e.g., SENAMHI) to join the local organizing committee.

Facilities: First Alternative

To be host in five star hotel (Hotel El Pueblo) located ~20 km from Lima but with all the needed facilities (conference rooms, comfortable rooms, variety of restaurants, pools, courts, etc.). The JRO is only a 10-minute drive from the hotel.

The main features are:– There are no places to visit within walking distances. Ideal to keep

the group together and have the always useful informal talks.– Not too ideal for short visits to Lima. However, group visits to

Historical sites, Museums, shopping centers, etc., could be arranged in one or two half days.

– The hotel emulates a small “Pueblo” (country town).

Facilities: First Alternative

All the participants would stay at the hotel. The main disadvantage is that is not well prepared for

handicaps.

Facilities: Second Alternative

To be host in a five star hotel in Lima. Here we have studied up to three different possibilities (1) Hotel Los Delfines, (2) Swissotel, and (3) Hotel Marriot. All of these hotels have the necessary accommodations to host a meeting of ~150 people.

The main features are:– There are good places to visit within walking distances.– Easy to go for short sightseeing visits.– Accommodations are more modern than alternative 1.

Not everyone needs to stay in the same hotel. There are cheaper alternatives close to all of these hotels.

Dates

For both alternatives the months of April and May, or October and November are the best.

During local summer, it is too hot and during local winter it is to “gray”.

For the participants from the Northern Hemisphere, the month of May will be the best.

From Europe. The airlines flying into Lima are: KLM, Lufhthansa, Iberia.

Tourism is Peru (1)

In Lima– Lima, the "City of Kings", is divided into districts, each with its own distinctive

character. Downtown Lima - with its grandiose plazas, mansions and the magnificent San Francisco Monastery - is the oldest, although its streets are now crowded with street vendors and decidedly chaotic. Many Limeños prefer to stay in the more international districts of Miraflores and San Isidro. Their new shopping complexes and landscaped gardens make this a complete contrast. Cafes and restaurant have live jazz and creole music while the old mansions give the streets a relaxed ambience.

– Museo de la Nacion Lima is proud of its newest museum, a large modern structure containing several floors of meticulously prepared exhibitions. They include impressive models of new and established archaeological sites as well as a spacious mannequin showroom displaying Peru's magnificent folkloric costumes.

– Museum of Anthropology & Archaeology It is one of the most interesting museums in South America, with a superb collection of pottery and textiles from all the main cultures of ancient Peru, as well as stone idols from Chavin.

– Museum of the Inquisition Explicit representations of torture methods in the Dungeon, the headquarters of the Inquisition for all Spanish America from 1570 - 1820.
