2 |MISSION SAN LUIS REY PARISH, Oceanside, California September 4, 2011

    From The Pastors Desk

    Dear Parish Family,

Peace and all good! In this weekends Gospel

(Matthew 18:15-20), Jesus is offering to his disci-

plesand by the way, that means you and me as

wella very sound path and process to effect

genuine reconciliation. When faced with a difficult

situation in family life, marriage, friendship, or

work, we have several options. We can walk away

from confrontation; we can react out of anger,

frustration, or fear. Or we can try to face the

situation and respond with as much calm as we

can muster and try to work things out. It aint

    easy.

Sadly, all too often we are tempted to fire

someone else-- walk away from the relationshipand eliminate them from our lives emotionally.

Sometimes, it may be necessary to do so, but in

many circumstances, we are challenged to hang

in there and try to work things out. In my own

family, I had two older relativesa brother and

sisterwho had a falling out when their mother

died. They stopped speaking to each other for

nearly 25 years! When they finally reconciled,

each of them had to admit that they could no

longer remember the reason for their argument.

What an awful waste of time and energy!

We cant be friends with everyone all the time,

but we can at least try to do the footwork with the

people who matter to us in our lives. At times that

may mean that we have to take the initiative to

repair the broken initiative. It does not mean we

have to be doormats for others. But every sincere

effort to forgive counts for something: it may

never affect the other person, but it changes us

and saves us from the lingering burden of resent-

ment and bitterness. Yes, its hard work. We cantdo it alone, but the Lord is always with us ready to

offer his strength and help when we are willing to

    participate in his reconciling mission.

    God bless,

    Fr. Chuck

    Elsewhere in the Parish

This weekend is Labor Day weekendthe tradi-

tional end of summer and beginning of the new

school year. We welcome back all of our parish stu-

dents, both at our parish schoolOld Mission Mon-

tessoriand in our Religious Education program.

Between the School and the RE program, we offer

religious instruction to nearly 1,000 children andyoung people!

Its an enormous task, and were grateful to the

staff of both the School and the RE program for their

tremendous generosity to our parish family!

Labor Day itself honors the working men and

women of our country. In these very tenuous eco-

nomic times, we keep in our hearts and prayers all

the members of our community who are struggling to

find work and to support their families.

Finally, many thanks to all who worked so hard on

our recent Procession of the Saint/ Heritage Ballevents last weekend. The attendance at our novena

and Masses preceding the feast day of our patron, St.

Louis, King of France/ San Luis Rey de Francia was

truly impressive. Also impressive were the great cele-

brations marking this important event. The proces-

sion, fireworks, and dance/musical events (with free

refreshments!) were an incredible expression of the

talent, generosity, and love of our parish family. I

cant thank everyone by name, but I can and do thank

you one and all as we continue to realize our vocation

to be one mission at the Missionthe evangelizingpresence of Jesus Christ in our community.

Our Koi Pond restoration project is going well.

Thank you to all who worked so hard on this, espe-

cially our MOP volunteers and parishioners Pete

Miles, and Charlie Doherty, a professional concrete

worker, and his crew. The cement work/pump, etc., is

now finished but cement needs to be cured and test-

ing has to be done to the water before the fish come

back. It will be approximately 3 weeks until that hap-

pens. All monies used to fund the pond were raised

thru food sales and by private donations. PS: The koiare on vacation and are doing well.

Welcome home, Father Adrian! Weve missed

you! Welcome back this week to Father Adrian

Peelo, who has been on a well-deserved vacation in

Ireland with his family during the month of Au-

    gust. Welcome home, Father!

    LIBRARY CATEGORY: Franciscans

Most of us are aware that ours is a Francis-

can parish. But if you arent clear about what

that means, our library collection on the Fran-

ciscans includes many books about this reli-

gious order which makes our parish unique.

    G. K. Chestertons book, St. Francis of Assisi, is a bio-

graphical portrait of a very human St. Francis, born into a

society moving from the medieval world toward the

    emerging Renaissance.

In Tales of St. Francis, Ancient Stories for Contempo-

rary Living, Murray Bodo uses a variety of sources and

legends about St. Francis to demonstrate the saints love

and courage living in a materialistic world.

And Marco Bartoli, in his book Saint Clare Beyond the

Legend, tells the story of the enthusiastic first woman

    follower of St. Francis.

ASSIST WITH A BIBLEAt the Easter Vigil our parish community witnessed over sixty

five people receiving the sacraments necessary to completetheir full entrance into the Church. One of the key elements oftheir catechesis is the coming to know the Scriptures, the Wordof God, on a weekly basis. During weekly class and again whenthey gather on Sunday they come to build a relationship withJesus Christ that they will carry with them for all their lives.

For this to take place the RCIA catechumens & candidates aregiven a Bible at the ceremony marking the beginning of their

journey of faith. Our parish faith formation budget is stretchedthis year trying to cover many, many, needs. Your help will begreatly appreciated if you could help us with providing Bibles toour RICA groups (both English & Spanish). A donation of $20.00,or any amount, would help us in purchasing a Bible for eachRCIA catechumen or candidate entering the Church next Easter. If you wish to give, you may make a donation at the Parish Of-fice or Bill Bischoffs office, or drop it into the collection in anenvelope marked BIBLES. Any help you can give will be greatlyappreciated. If you have any questions, call Bill Bischoff at 760-547-0702.

    CRITICISM & RESISTANCE

Is there criticism & resistance to the new translation? Oh

yes, in fact I believe it would not be the Church without

some healthy dialogue, debate, and disagreement over

something as important as this Missal. Fr. Warren Rouse

OFM, my first instructor in the study of the liturgy, saidwhen you make changes to the Mass you are seen as

changing peoples religious identity. So the need for this

dialogue is a healthy sign of the life of the Church.

Yet in many respects the first dialogue is over. There is a

finalized text we will begin to use this Advent, and in a

sense learn as we go along as our liturgical year unfolds.

So, how do we address the criticisms and continue to dia-

logue with those who resist in welcoming the new Missal?

First, let me name some of the criticisms. I am using an

article by Rita Ferrone, a much respected liturgist, to iden-

tify some of these points of concern.

A problem with clarity, language and words confus-ing the laity

A problem of length of some prayers, too long com-

    pared to the present prayers

Some texts used at every Mass not clearly expressing

    what is involved

The tension that arises from the new translation is in the

language, the words themselves and how they relate to the

faith of the people. The criticism is that the language used

will deny the people a clear understanding of the beliefs of

the Church. One example is how the Creed will begin. The

Creed, the Credo, now begins with the words We believe in

God... in Advent we will begin to pray, the new translation

with words I believe in God... One criticism of the new

translation is the loss of the idea of Church as a community

praying their faith... A response for the translation is that by

joining my individual voice and belief to the prayer of the

community I am clearly declaring my faith in what I be-

lieve in. The word Credo literally translates as I believe

The criticism and response above is a clear example of

how this tension arises. The leaders and teachers of the

Church involved in the new translation see the literal trans-

lation of the word as a starting point in expressing and

    learning our faith.

As I proclaim my faith with the other voices in the Mass

I will come to realize that my faith proclamation leads meto the understanding that I also belong to the We the

    greater Church.

So what is the point to all this? It is very simply that the

Liturgy of the Mass is to bring me into a dialogue and

awareness that I will always need to learn more about my

faith. The words of the New Translation are not an ending

    point but a beginning point.

    Continued next week...

    THE CATECHETICAL MINUTETHE NEW MISSAL

man Missal will shape the celebration of the Mass in our

8 |PARROQUIAMISION SAN LUIS REY, Oceanside, California 4 de septiembre del 2011

    Del Escritorio del Prroco

    Querida Familia Parroquial,

Cuan-

Tristemente, a menudo nosotros estamos tentados a

estar all y a enmendar las cosas.

No quiere

religiosa, ofrecemos instruccin religiosa a casi 1,000 nios

y jvenes!

tante evento.

    do muy bien!

Finalmente, Bienvenido a casa, Padre Adrian!

Padre, bienvenido a casa!

    Criticismo y resistencia

As pues, cmo enfocaremos noso-
