    1.1 This method of statement covers the placing of bituminous pavement areas

    shown on approved drawings.

    2.1 This method statement defines the responsibilities and describes the activities

    and procedures to be implemented for the placing of bituminous pavement for

    *.1 The Site /ngineer S/ will ensure that the site preparation activities are

    conducted according to the approved ethod Statement, and S/ plan.

    *.1.1 /nsure all necessar approvals and wor3 permits are obtained prior to

    start the wor3.

    *.1.2 Conve all technical data to road foreman and to ensure that the

    foreman understood the activities to be e4ecuted.

    .1.* rior to finali;ation of the Eob i4, a trial section at location approved

    b the /ngineer shall be laid for each Eob i4. The trial section shall

    be 2 lanes wide b 80 m long.

    .1.7 The trial section shall be laid to demonstrate the adeuac of hauling,

    spreading and compaction euipment and the suitabilit of the

    construction methods and organi;ation proposed and it shall be offered

    to the /ngineer for inspection and approval.

    .2 rime and Tac3 Coat aterials

    .2.1 rime and Tac3 Coat materials shall conform to @S sections 708 and

    706, respectivel.

    .2.2 &pproval of the material from the /ngineer is reuired prior to use.

    .*.1 The plant shall be capable to continuall produce asphalt mi4es within

    the -ob mi4 tolerances specified at an automaticall controlledoperation.

    .*.2 The plant shall be offered to the /ngineer for inspection and approval

    prior to an asphalt paving activities.

    .7 %ther /uipment

    .7.1 &ll other euipment such as haulers, rollers, asphalt distributor,

    spreading and finishing euipment shall be offered to the /ngineer for

    inspection and approval.

    3.% "ro'e#ures

    D.1 auling of aterials

    D.1.1 Sufficient plant capacit, haul vehicles and storage shall be provided so

    that adeuate supplies of mi4ture are delivered to ensure continuous

    paving can be achieved.

    D.1.2 The dispatching of the hauling vehicles to the -ob site shall be so

    scheduled that all material delivered ma be placed in dalight, unless

    the /ngineer approves the use of artificial light.

    D.1.* $eliver of material shall be at a uniform rate and in an amount well

    within the capacit of the paving and compacting euipment.

    D.1.7 &ll precautions shall be ta3en to protect the mi4 from the weatherduring transit and whilst waiting to discharge.

    D.1.8 The mi4 shall be delivered to the paver at a temperature between 178C

    and 168C.

    D.2 Surface reparation

    D.2.1 /4amine the sub)base?base course and ad-oining construction, and the

    conditions under which the bituminous primer will be applied. $o not

    proceed with the wor3 until unsatisfactor conditions detrimental to the

    proper and timel completion of the wor3 have been corrected.

    D.2.2 &ll base and sub)base courses will be cleaned and prepared b removal

    of dust and deleterious materials b air -etting or mechanicall

    sweeping or an other approved means. & light application of water

    will be made -ust prior to the application of liuid asphalt to facilitate

    penetration.

    D.* rime Coat &pplication

    D.*.1 rime coat will be applied initiall on a trial section at a location

    approved b the /ngineer, using the same materials, mi4ing and

    spraing euipment, and construction procedures, proposed for use in

    the wor3s.

    D.*.2 %nl after approval of the /ngineer on the trial section can the

    application of prime coat proceed.

    D.*.* rime coat shall be applied with same methods and procedure as that of

    the approved trial section.

    D.*.7 rime coat shall not be applied when the ambient temperature is less

    than 10C nor during rain, fog, dust)storms or other unsuitable weather.D.*.8 The application rate shall be between 0.D and 1.8 3g?m2 at application

    temperature between 78C and D0C.

    D.*.6 The prime coat shall usuall be applied to 1?* or 1?2 of the road width

    at a time. #hen applied in two or more lanes, there shall be a slight

    overlap of asphalt material along ad-oining edges of the lanes.

    D.*. The completed primed surface shall be maintained in a good clean

    condition and prior to the application of the ne4t course, an surface

    irregularities shall be corrected and all e4cessive blotter material, dirt

    or other ob-ectionable materials shall be removed.

    D.7 Tac3 Coat &pplicationD.7.1 Tac3 coat will be applied initiall on a trial section at a location

    approved b the /ngineer, using the same materials, mi4ing and

    spraing euipment, and construction procedures, proposed for use in

    the wor3s.

    D.7.2 %nl after approval of the /ngineer on the trial section can the

    application of tac3 coat proceed.

    D.7.* Tac3 coat shall be applied with same methods and procedure as that of

    the approved trial section.

    D.7.7 Tac3 coat shall not be applied when the ambient temperature is less

    than 10C nor during rain, fog, dust)storms or other unsuitable weather.

    D.7.8 The application rate shall be between 0.18 to 0.8 3g?m2 at applicationtemperature between 28C and 68C.

    D.7.6 The tac3 coat shall usuall be applied to 1?* or 1?2 of the road width at

    %. Prior cti'ities+

    (.1 Submit mi4 design and aggregates for 5ngineer6s appro+al as per clause 777 of the

    specifications. The 8ob mi4 shall be made for the Base9 Binder and Surface Courses

    respecti+el,.

    (.% Trial rea of each pa+ement material9 sampling the permanent wor/s will be laid to the

    e4tent and at locations to be agreed upon with the 5ngineer as per clause 77.

    (.' Compaction methods will be sub8ect to appro+al b, the 5ngineer prior to

    commencement of permanent wor/s b, means of demonstrati+e trials as per clause

    &&1.2). Tests will be conducted according to Specs and appro+ed compaction

    methods will be adopted for the 0ro8ect. n, modification will be sub8ect to the

    5ngineer6s appro+al.

    (.( Batching 0lant for asphalt production are located in mghra and another one will be

    erected on Site to ensure the re!uired capacit, for the 0ro8ect. ll plants will be

    calibrated and chec/ed before being put into operation. Regular chec/s will be

    carried out as per clause 77.

    (.) Bitumen and aggregates shall not be heated to abo+e 1$*;C and 1'*;C

    respecti+el,9 and the temperature difference between them at the time of mi4ing

    shall not e4ceed 1$;C.

    Surface Preparation:

    a< ll base and sub=base courses will be cleaned and prepared b, remo+al of

    dust and deleterious materials b, air 8etting or mechanicall, sweeping or an,

    other appro+ed means. The cleaned course will be afterwards lightl, made wet

    0rior to the application of the prime coat.

    b< n appro+ed priming coat of grade MC%* or other appro+ed will be applied to

    non=bituminous sub=base and base la,ers at the rate of 7 to 7. litres per m>

    as per clause 77. Similarl,9 appro+ed bitumen tac/ coat of grade MC %* cut=

    bac/ bitumen or SS1? emulsion or other appro+ed will be applied to binder

    courses at the rate of *.2$ to *.&$ litre per m> as per clause 7.. Spra,ing of

    the prime and tac/ coats will be done b, a tan/er fitted with no@@les at the

    bac/ of the tan/ to allow e+en spreading of bitumen. The bitumen will be pre=

    heated to a temperature of 12*oC in the tan/er prior to the spra,ing. The

    accurac, of rate of application will be ad8usted during the trials.

    Note: Enough time will be allowed for the curing of the prime and tack coats

    before laying the binder course or the wearing course.

    Bituminous pavement material transportation:

    a< Transportation of asphalt concrete from the mi4ing plant to the pa+ers will be+ia &* ton tipper truc/s designated for this use onl,. The truc/s +ehicles will be

    treated b, oil or water or an, other appro+ed means to facilitate the discharge.

    Moreo+er9 the, will be speciall, modified to pre+ent an, spills during the

    downloading into the pa+er.

    Note: The number of trucks to be used for hauling the asphalt will be sufficient

    to avoid any interruption in the paving operation.

    b< The flow of deli+er, will be uniform to assure the best !ualit, of asphalt

    finishing.

    c< ll mi4ed material will be deli+ered to the pa+er in time to permit completion of

    spreading and finishing of the mi4ture during the da, wor/ing hours. Should

    the bituminous material be placed at night9 ade!uate lighting will be pro+ided

    and re!uest for appro+al will be sent to the 5ngineer.

    d< Ma4imum care will be ta/en to a+oid deli+er, interruption. ?owe+er9 in case

    there is a long stoppage between truc/s9 a 8oint will be cut in the fresh la,er9

    loosened material discarded and a +er, light coat of hot bitumen will be applied

    before the ne4t strip is placed.

    Sur'e$in, /ork

    a< Base course9 binder course and wearing course le+els will be determined from

    the finished pa+ement surface as shown on the appro+ed shop drawings and

    will be submitted for the 5ngineer6s appro+al.

    b< The strip width shall not be less than & meters. 0a+er guideline le+els will be

    set using steel wires stretched and ade!uatel, supported to pre+ent an,

    sagging on both sides.

    a< Spreading of bituminous mi4tures shall be done b, automatic controlled

    pa+ers. BA pa+ers will be used in this 8ob. The BA pa+ers are e!uipped with

    automatic sensors that control the grades and cross slopes. The sensors are

    mounted on either side of the pa+ing legs and are indi+iduall, controlled.

    Crowns or continuous grades can be established on an BA inisher. ll

    machines in+ol+ed in asphalt operation shall be in good condition and will be

    chec/ed before and during the operation.

    b< The thic/ness of asphalt shall be controlled on both sides b, the ele+ation of

    the steel wires. The thic/ness of asphalt laid is determined b, measuring

    height from top of wire and b, a measuring gauge a steel rod fitted with a

    circular steel plate which can be ad8usted for depth< throughout the la,ing

    period. The length of each pass shall not e4ceed a one truc/ load.

    c< The material temperature should be more than 12*;C and will be chec/ed

    directl, before its discharge according to clause 7. of the specifications.

    d< -ongitudinal 8oints in successi+e la,ers shall be offset b, at least &**mm from

    parallel 8oints in the la,er beneath. Trans+erse 8oints in successi+e la,ers

    and3or ad8acent lanes shall be offset b, at least & meters.

    e< The material discharge will ta/e place without dela,. Rolling shall commence

    immediatel, after placing of asphalt and will sta, as close as possible to the

    0a+er. ?owe+er9 all loose material shall be remo+ed prior to compaction.

    f< The pa+er shall operate at a speed which will gi+e the best results

    coordinating with the rate of deli+er, of material.

    g< Initial rolling shall be carried out with the Steel Roller at speeds slow enough

    to a+oid displacement of asphalt.

    h< 54cess binder3base course material will be remo+ed b, brooming or light

    ra/ing and will be discarded. d8ustment of surface course le+el b, hand=

    ra/ing or hand spra,ing will be carried out after getting the 5ngineer6s

    i< Rolling shall be longitudinall,9 beginning at low side towards the high side of

    pa+ement. d8acent rolls shall be shorter as progressed and finall, semi

    diagonal steel rolling is applied.

    8< The asphalt shall then be rolled with the 2$ Ton tire Rollers and shall stop short

    of an, crac/s that might appear.

    /< The high powered &$ Ton 0neumatic Tire Rollers shall then be applied to

    achie+e the re!uired compaction.

    l< inal rolling shall be done b, the Steel Roller especiall, at 8oints and points of

    deficiencies.

    m< ll Rollers shall be e!uipped with water reser+oirs and scrapers to a+oid an,
