Hello Race Fans! April showers bring May flowers !! Hopefully we can get the spring showers behind us and get on with the racing. The flowers are important too, MRA recommends you don’t forget to give your mom a great big bouquet on Mothers Day (that’s May 9th for those of you that don’t have a calendar). And give her a HUG too, I know that’s mushy but she’ll appreciate it a lot. Well we’re hot and heavy into the spring race season here in the area. We’ve already had three rounds of both the D-6 Championship Point Series and the BP Promotions State Hare Scramble Series. The racing has been intense and I’m sure that is just a preview of what’s to come. No matter what you fancy, there are tons of great events you can attend as a racer coming to a track near you. In the month of May you can check out some National Events as well, including a GNCC Race, a Pro/Am Half Mile and a Pro MX National at Hi Point. As always don’t forget to watch our website at www.mcracingaction.com for all of your racing action photos, and be sure to secure your copy of MRA with a home delivery subscrip-tion. (Your contribution allows us to cover more racing action.) There are lots of places you can check out race coverage from our area, but MRA is the only one you can take with you (well you know where.) We also feature racer reviews, maintenance tips, event schedules and more importantly you, the amateur racer out there doing your thing week after week at the local tracks. We thank you for your dedication to the sport and we thank you for providing all of the great racing action for us to report on. Have a great month and we’ll see you at the track.

rider: Addison Emory IVHometown:Finksburg, MDbike: CobraAge: 8 yrs.District#: 19Aexperience: 2 yearsclass: 7-8 stockSponsors: No Fear, Kincaid Racing, Amsoil, Addison Painting & Restoration, Emory Fireproofing, Inc.

Addison emory iV from Finksburg, MD is the MrA Holeshot Hotshot for the month of May. Addison started racing just 2 short years ago on his Honda Xr 50 and has progressed quite nicely into the 50cc stock and 65cc 7-9 classes. Addison was determined the last few months of the 03 season to be in the MrA Holeshot Hotshot column, but he just never managed to put it all together while we were at the same event. in 2004 at Sleepy Hollows opener Addison came out firing, he new MrA was there and he wanted that hotshot spot. Addison grabbed the holeshots in both of his motos in the 50cc stock 7-8 division and raced on for the win, way to go Addison. Watch out for this young man in the future, he already has some top 5 track championships under his belt from last season and he is off to a great start in 04. Watch out next month, you just might be the next MrA Holeshot Hotshot.

8 year old dylan blettner from hanover, pa got the opportunity of his young life when he and his family trav-eled to the Minneapolis Supercross in february of this year to compete in the KtM Junior Supercross challenge. the Junior challenge is going into its 8th year and offers boys and girls from all over the nation a chance to be a KtM factory rider for a day. open to experienced 7-8 year old riders it allows them to ride the same supercross tracks as the pros. dylan was treated to a factory KtM pro Senior ride with his own mechanic, tons of free gear and he had his very own autograph session. he got to hang out in the KtM rig and meet a bunch of the factory pros then com-pete in front of 50,000 fans on the Minneapolis Supercross course. dylan was also interviewed by nickelodean tV for a segment to be aired in May, check your local listings. the blettner family would like to thank all the people at KtM that make weekends like this possible, talking to dylans dad brian he expressed that ‘it was truly an awesome weekend for his entire family’. dylan would also like to thank all his sponsors that help him along the way, and a special thanks to uncle Mike and Mickel for all that they do.

District 7 bC youth, Women Championship pointsround 3: Happy ramblers motorcycle ClubHanoVer, pa, marCH 28By Jim BullRay Wilt Motorcycles in Hanover, Pennsylvania sponsored the four foot trophy day at the Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club during the third round of the A.M.A. District Seven BC Youth, and Womens Championship Point Series of 2004.Happy Ramblers held a practice day on Saturday prior to the event on Sunday for the over 500 racers that would compete to hone their skills on the rich red clay of the Ramblers course. In the first moto of the 65cc 10-11 division, VPE sponsored Steven

Sparks grabbed the holeshot ahead of the Sanford Engines/ Scott/ MX Bones pilot Brandon Seibold and JT Motorsports/ FMF/ Renthal jockey Jacob Grove. Both Seibold and Grove got quickly past Sparks a few turns into the race. But midway thru the

first lap Grove went down; this allowed Sparks and several other riders to get by. Grove remounted in midpack and began to charge, on the final lap he was able to work his way back to second followed by Sparks, Kawasaki ace Jordan Walker and Joshua Villareal rounding out the top five.In moto number two Seibold and Grove lined up beside each other on the gate. The crowd anticipated a close battle and they would not be disappointed. When the gate dropped it was the 6 J of Villareal with the holeshot this time followed by Seibold, Walker, Grove and Sparks. Again

both Grove and Seibold had the race under control coming out of the rhythm section on the first lap. This time Grove made no mistakes and though Seibold gave him a great race Grove was able to hold on for the moto win and take the overall on the day. In the 50cc stock 7-8 ranks, KTM rider Jacob Runkles got out in front followed

closely by the Kincaid Racing/ 661/ GS3 ride of Bobby Kinsley and the KTM of Camp Hill/ BRX/ Liquid Performance ace Jarek Balkovic. By the end of the first lap both Balkovic and Kinsley had gotten by Runkles, the two would go on to finish that way with Runkles third, Austin Toskov in fourth and Hunter Santa in fifth.

In moto number two it was again Runkles with the hole-shot followed by Kinsley and Balkovic. This time Balkovic made his move early and it seemed he would lead this one to the end. Young Kinsley had other plans though and mounted a charge and caught Balkovic and the race was on. The two were going tire to tire and it was Kinsley coming out on top at the end of this one. He made the pass on the second lap and rode to a six second lead at the checkers and took the overall win. In the Womens division the motos were split with Union Bridge Marylands Ana Ward going 1-2 on the day and taking the overall was Jessica Childs on the Yamaha going 2-1. PR2 Racing technology, inc.pr2racing.com; engine division – 849 North Little Britain Rd, Quarryville, PA 17566 Tel 717.786.8321 Fax 717.806.0516proper Maintenance: four-Stoke MX bikesHello, PR2 Racing here to discuss some maintenance techniques with the modern four-stroke moto-cross bike. Our goal is to cover some of the basics to ensure you get the most satisfaction from your new four-stroke MX bike.Unless you have been hiding under a rock for the past few months it is obvious that four-stoke moto-cross bikes are the future. In professional Supercross the 125 class has been riddled with four-strokes. For example: Anaheim 1 marked the first time in history that more 250 four-strokes were entered than their 125 two-stroke counterparts. In fact, nineteen of the twenty-two bikes making it to the main event were four-strokes! Additionally, it is amazing to see our local district 6 and the rest of the country transition so quickly.Congratulations if you have purchased on of these new dirt super thumpers. You have just purchased a mass produced formula 1 racing engine. This is four-stroke technology at its best. These new MX engines are very similar to their 4-cylinder street bike cousins…operating in a much dirtier environ-ment. Along with the latest technology you will learn to love these engines or hate them if they are not properly maintained. This may sound very basic, however, your air filter needs meticulous maintenance. You now have valves, valve guides, and other components that cannot tolerate any dirt. Either the OEM air filter or an aftermarket unit will work just fine….but there are some rules. First we recommend a biodegrad-able air filter oil system. Use a quality name brand system that has the cleaning agent that makes cleaning a snap. This makes filter maintenance more fun (is there such a thing?) and a whole lot easier. One last item: Do not use spray–on air filter oil!Proper oil selection is critical. Do not use oils that are intended for an automobile. They do not con-tain the additives needed to lubricate a 14,000 rpm racing engine, transmission and clutch. The Honda CRF’s do have a split system which allows a lesser grade in the transmission and clutch por-tion. Torco manufactures some of the highest grade oils specifically for racing. You need to choose a premium grade blend of synthetic and petroleum designed for these engines. You need to change your oils every 1 1/2 hours racing applications and after each ride for 4-6 hours of trail time. You can replace the filter element after every other oil change. Check the level frequently; these engines do consume oil during normal operation. One of the leading failures of these new engines is valve related issues. You will need to inspect (or your dealer) your valve lash periodically. How often? This is based on how well you maintain you engine. We have seen engines run for 40-60 hours with no problems when properly maintained and as little as 5 hours when not properly maintained. We recommend that you have the valve lash checked every 10 hours of operation. Read your owners manual and follow their recommendations for proper clearance. One item that is not discussed in your manual is proper valve sealing. This is how accurately the valve seat and the valve contact one another to form a perfect seal. The 250F’s are all really suspect to what we are going to discuss due to higher heat, higher horsepower per cubic centimeter. After 3-4 heat cycles on the engine we find that the aluminum cylinder head distorts where the steel valve seats are pressed into the combustion chamber. This leads to the valve guide and seat not being properly aligned or concentric to each other. Titanium valves do not tolerate misalignment very well since each time they open and close the stem needs to flex and bend. This can and will lead to very rapid valve failure. The best way to prevent this is to remove the head and have a precision valve grinding done within the first 10 hours of operation. This can only be done with a super precision Sunnen or a Serdi valve seat grinding machine. Do not accept other processes or machines….there is a reason every NASCAR and Formula race team has one of these machines. Be cautious when starting your four-stroke and warming it up. This is when 75% of the wear inside your engine occurs. You should start your engine and allow it to idle until the clutch cover is warm to the touch. There is no reason to race the engine repeatedly bouncing the engine from the rev-limited. You do not need to “clean-out” a four cycle engine like its two cycle counterparts. This goes for the starting line as well. It is important to keep the motorcycle clean. Wash it after each ride, it ensures that dirt will not find its way inside during routine maintenance. And never wash the motorcycle when the engine is hot. This will allow condensation to form inside the engine and contaminate the oil with water. Use the exhaust plugs to keep moisture out as well. In summary, the new Formula 1 inspired four-stroke motocross bikes are marvels in technology. The engines operate at extremely high speeds, high heat and a dirty environment that demand attention from it’s’ owner. You must maintain your machine and you will be rewarded with a reliable, pleasant machine with high fun factor. If you ignore the proper maintenance required, this new machine will cost you a lot of money.

Good luck and see you at the races! PR2 Racing Technology.

MrA would like to feature local Pro / expert racer Dustin Kendall from carlisle, Pa. i’ve only had an opportunity to watch him ride a few times, Dustin spent a lot of time last year racing in D-5 chasing fast guy, now team Suzuki pilot broc Hepler around. Let me tell you, this guy can fly. We bumped into Dustin easter Weekend at the tri-District challenge cup at rocket raceway where he swept both his motos for the overall win. Dustin started riding at the age of 3 on an italijet 50 and by the time he was 5 he started competing in District 6. Dustin has accomplished many things in his racing career but he tells us he’s only just beginning. He has been to Lorettas every year but 2 since he was seven, he has had a top 10 finish at the Mini o’s and he won every moto he competed in in 2000 in the 125c division. Dustin turned expert at the age of 14 and has never looked back. Dustin has big plans for the future, he currently has a full ride from cumberland Kawasaki in carlisle, Pa and Pr2 racing technology in Quarryville, PA does his motor work. Dustin is headed for the nationals this year here on the east coast and has very high hopes. He is fast, has great support and a super attitude, that combined with the support from his family has things looking way up for this young racer from Pennsylvania. MrA would like to thank Dustin and his father bryan for the time they gave us, we wish you the best in the years to come. Keep an eye on this guy, i believe we’ll all see him at the top.

Winsett Whips Trail-Way ST OpenerBy Len Breech Photos by Ben BreechHANOVER, PA. MAR. 21

Ricky Winsett Jr. emerged from Trail-Way Speedway’s traditional Mid-Atlantic area short track opener as the only rider to take a pair of wins. Also traditional was the weather; un-spring-like cold and very windy. Winsett put his Patriot H-D/Arai/Tuff Plates sponsored quickly in front of the Open A and Sportsman finals. Winsett grabbed the Open lead from Brian Phillips, Raun Wood and Bryan Douglas. While he opened up a nice lead, Wood went to the outside to gradually get by Phillips after several laps of inching by him. With three laps left, he successfully completed the pass for second. In the Sportsman, Phillips trailed Winsett with most of the 450 Sportsman riders battling for third, led by John Lewis. The order stayed the same with Lewis battling Kevin Varnes and Shawn Baer for third. After having an excellent amateur series at Daytona, (John) Lewis kept on winning taking the 450 Sportsman final on his ABBA Systems/Bromley’s Cycles Honda. Following him were Shawn Baer, Kevin Varnes and Raun Wood. Varnes stayed close to Baer most of the way, slipping under off four with two laps to go, but he was half a straight behind Lewis . While many of the races were follow the leader affairs, sev-eral had battles for the lead. Coming back from Daytona’s vintage races enthused, Rick Reynolds made a rare non-vintage start in the 500 2 Valve class. He took the lead from Jim Chapman, Dave Smith and Nick Taylor. Smith was quickly in second, and after a few laps took the lead at the start of the fourth lap. Reynolds retook the lead on the following lap. The pair raced side by side for the next few laps, with Reynolds slightly in front. On the next to last lap, Smith bobbled slightly off the second turn, giving Reynolds the breathing room he needed. Jason Isennock looked like he would win the 750 race over Brian Phillips and Jim Chapman, but coming off the fourth turn, he bobbled slightly, letting Phillips shot into the lead. Richard Heverly briefly took the 600 B lead from Nicholas Henderson, Ryan Henderson and Cory Texter. Ryan shot into the lead at the end of the opening lap, while Texter slowly started picking off riders, taking second at the start of the fourth lap, and took the lead off four on the sixth lap. But Ryan stayed close and retook the lead down the backstraight on the final lap. Brandon Robinson jumped into the 125 lead over Shayna Texter and Jordan Harris. Harris took second before the end of the lap and stayed close to Robinson. As they completed the sixth lap,

Harris slipped into the lead and held it to the end. Robinson came back later in the 250 B final and went wire to wire over Richard Heverly and Chris MacCarty. Todd Kendig took the 30 + final, while Lowell Wherley was victorious in the 40 + group. Hayden Avery topped the 85 (7-11) group while Shayna Texter took the 85

(12-15) class. A pair of relatives of national number holders took their first wins in the 50s, Ryan Varnes, son of Kevin, won the 50 (4-6), while Kyle McGrane, Tom’s brother, topped the 50 Oil Injected. Tyler Stacey won the 50 (7-8) while Cassidy Heiser was the 65 victor.

U.S. EASTERN SPRING SERIESMARCH 7, 2004DEVILS RIDGE MOTOCROSSSANDFORD N.C.

“NEW YEAR FOR THE DEVIL”BY MATTHEW MORETZOn March 7, 2004, Devils Ridge Motocross started its year of racing as the U.S. Eastern Spring Series stopped in for the day. Over 615 riders enjoyed the excellent weather as Brewer Cycle and Kenda Tire offered big rewards for the top runners.

In the first moto of 50cc Oil Inj. Class, Austin Toskov had the early lead as Bubba Stone, Dru Campbell, Dillon Knight and Kristan East followed close behind. Toskov wasted no time stretching out a lead on 2nd place Stone. But Stone never backed down as Knight made his move on Campbell for 3rd. Stones hard charging paid off as Toskov started developing bike problems and closed the gap. As Toskov was just about to receive the white flag his bike shut off, Stone made the pass for the lead. With his 50 Honda held wide open he was able to hold off Toskov for the win. The over all order was: Toskov, Stone, Knight, Riley, Belk and Campbell.

The first moto of the Open/4-Stroke Class started with Isha Wood in the lead as Kyle J. Travis, Aaron Stancil, Charlie Wedmore and Jeremy Stroupe followed close behind. Stancil made a fast pass on Travis for second as Wood started stretching out a lead on the pack. With a comfortable lead Wood showed off a little to much and went down which allowed Stancil to take the lead. Wood had trouble getting his 4-stroke started and fell to the back of the pack. Stroape was work-ing on making the pass on Wedmore and with high confidence passed with ease. Stroupe then set his eyes on Travis and chased him down. With a little mistake by Travis, Stroupe rolled right on by him and held him off to the finish. The over all order was: Stancil, Stroupe, Wedmore, Travis and Justin Mcbrayer.

The first moto of the 125c class started out with Kyle Hepner out front on his Landon Racing Yamaha as Brandon Causey, Luke Sutphen, James Kennedy and Dustin Wineberger tried to chase him down.

Christopher Hines made a nice clean pass on Sutphen for third. That’s how the race ended as Hepner had a huge lead on the pack. Watching this kid ride I was impressed. He is going to win a lot of races if the other riders don’t pick up the pace. The over all order was: Hepner, Causey, Sutphen, Mike Lucas and

March 28, 1797 – 1st washing machine is granted a US patent March 28, 1891 – 1st world weightlifting championship heldMarch 28, 1899 – August Busch, beer maker and St. Louis Cardinal owner bornMarch 28, 1910 – 1st seaplane takes off from the water at Martinique FranceMarch 28, 1954 – Reba McEntire, coun-try singer & actress is bornMarch 28, 1963 – New York Titans change name to the New York JetsMarch 28, 2004 – Blue Diamond Park’s 1st AMA sanctioned motocross race

Long known as the “First State” to rati-fy the U.S. constitution on December 7, 1787 Delaware has been given many nicknames. The 45th most populated state is also known as “Small Wonder”, “Blue Hen State”, and “The Diamond State.” Thomas Jefferson gave the nickname “The Diamond State” to Delaware according to legend because he described Delaware as a “jewel” among states due to its strategic location on the Eastern Seaboard. The “Blue Hen State” was given to Delaware after the blue hen cocks that were carried with the Delaware Revolutionary War Soldiers for entertainment during cockfights, hence the colonial blue state flag and state color. It’s no “Small Wonder” that Blue Diamond Park carries the tradition of being a “jewel” attracting many talented racers up and down the Eastern seaboard.

Today’s attraction at the ‘first” AMA sanctioned race at Blue Diamond Park was represented by Dover

International Speedway. The original “Monster Mile” is promoting NASCAR and the MBNA 200 Craftsman Truck Series to be held June 4th & Busch Series on June 5th. Just as Richard Petty won the first race held in Dover in 1969, the Dover International Speedway has seen significant

growth over the years. How fitting that today in 1899 August Busch

descendant of the founder who sponsors the Busch Series was born. Track officials had an authentic race car and simulator onsite for the event. All event entries

received a Dover International Speedway collector pin. The simi-larity to Blue Diamond’s “Monster 1.2 Mile MX Course” is uncanny…so who’s the Richard Petty of the day?

Let history record that Diamond Motor Sports sponsored racer, young Michael Anderson “Kicked Butt” with six 1st place moto fin-ishes. Anderson displayed his skills in the Junior Mini, 65cc 10-11 and 85cc 7-11 classes. Not to go unno-ticed, Angelo Manerchia on his Suzuki prepped ride distanced

himself from the competition display-ing excellent cornering skills and straight-a-way speed that kept the field at bay…but not enough to catch Anderson of New Castle,DE. Manerchia went 2-2 in the 85cc 7-11 and Junior Mini 7-11. After a motocross mara-thon at Atco MX Park last night, Forest Hill, MD. native Jay Rassa #736 put his Honda out in front early and dom-inated the 25+A and 30+A classes. The C class and Vet C class provided for the majority of entries as is the same at most facilities with turnout being divided among Happy Ramblers, Sleepy Hollow, Raceway Park and Devils Ridge, NC. southeast Loretta Lynn qualifiers.

Another history note from today’s event…number of vic-tories in the overall… Honda 10…Suzuki 5…KTM 5…Yamaha 3…Kawasaki 3…and in the individual…Honda 21…KTM 10…Suzuki 9…Yamaha 6… Kawasaki 6.

If you had not yet visited the facility you have…287 days till the end of the year.

Over 300 racers from District Six had to battle harsh weather conditions once again as mother nature dumped significant rainfall on the course in the days prior to the event. With the temperatures in the mid 30’s and the winds raging up to 20 mph the youth racers headed to staging looking to gain valuable points towards the series championship.Several of the youth class racers made the stop for round two of the series on their way home from the Big Buck GNCC including Supermini Division winner Andy Carlson riding the Suzuki out of Newark, New york. Carlson battled another Suzuki pilot, Michael Polaski from Lancaster, Pennsylvania almost the entire race. Polaski grabbed the holeshot but had trouble staying upright in the slick conditions. he and Carlson jockeyed for the front spot for close to an hour with Carlson coming out on top. In the 85cc 12-15 division Leisure Equipment/Reactive Suspension/Bel Ray/Wiseco rider Justin Frederick had big hopes for the day. When the green flag dropped, Frederick found himself second to last coming off the line with a huge pack of opponents between himself and the five foot tro-phy being offered by the Flying Dutchmen on the day. Frederick has been consistent so far this year and would not be denied, he turned up the heat and was running third by the end of the first lap and found himself in the top spot by the end of the second. Frederick crusied to the win in just over an hour turning in five laps in the mud.Another youth racer that traveled though the night from the Big Buck GNCC was 85cc 7-11 sensation Dale “Bugsy” Wakefield. Wakefield copped a second in the mini junior division in South Carolina and showed up ready for battle on Sunday morning in Pennsylvania. The Rizzon Suzuki mounted Wakefield took his second win in as many tries in the BP State Series. In the 200 Expert division, motocross racer turned hare Scrambler Cumberland kawasaki/Off Road Cycle Supply/hobbs Cycle Supply ace Jed haines let the rest of the Pennsylvania riders know he is a serious threat on his 125cc two stroke machine. haines pulled the holeshot and never looked back. Talking to haines after the race he was a little disappointed, he had set his goals high and wanted to also capture the overall win. he came up a little short against the top riders in

the district, haines took the 200A win and finished third overall, not so bad for a first year hare Scrambler. The BP Promotions Pennsylvania State hare Scramble Series is sponsored by MSR and Answer Racing and is offering

over $50,000 in cash and contingencies. Round four will be held at the Foot of Mountain in Neelyton, Pennsylvania on May 2nd. Log onto www.bppoints.com for series details, check out www.mcracingaction.com for complete event photos. Jim Bull MRA

MRA had an opportunity to speak with Jed Haines after Round # 2 of the PA State Hare Scramble Series at the Flying Dutchmen MC. Jed is an Expert racer that has recently switched from Motocross to Hare Scramble racing here in District 6 and is doing quite well for himself. This is his first full year as a Harescrambler and he has already picked up a few wins. Jed took the overall at a D-7 race at Tomahawk MX Park earlier this season and he picked up the 200 A win at the Dutchmen in Round # 2. Fellow Hare Scramble racers would be wise to watch out for this young man, his goal is to take the cham-pionship in the PA State Series this year. My bet is he has a good chance to do it. MRA would like to thank Jed and his family for the time they gave us and we wish you well in your new endeavor. Jim Bull MRA

• 31The Weakest Link

By: Bob Schuler – Total Two Wheel Training

Guys if you are not wearing as much protective gear as you can afford then you are crazy. Take it from someone who knows. At age 42, my knee is bone on bone at 90 degrees because of a torn up meniscus and a partial tear in my right ACL. In moto-cross your knees are one of the most important body parts to keep healthy. They take all the pounding. They are your suspension. Your knees make you capable of standing through the rough stuff and help absorb the impact of all the large jumps of today’s motocross tracks. If your knees and quadriceps are weak you will sit down more than you should and this will reap havoc on your lower back. There are a lot of exercises to keep them strong through the winter months and to keep them maintained through the summer season. Squats, Leg Press, Quad exten-sions and also hamstring curls will help keep a well-balanced and strengthened knee. These exercises have kept me on the bike without getting total knee replacements. In addition to exercise, knee braces will help support your knee so they don’t get tweaked constantly and also helps with hyperextension.Knee braces used to be for just the top-level pro-guys but these days everyone down to the minis are wearing them. Parents if you are reading this article do yourself and your little racer a favor and go out and get them a set of knee braces. Once a knee is torn up there is no orthopedic surgeon on earth that will be able to make it 100%. Innovation Sports makes a brace called the C180 for the little guys and girls to moto in. I don’t have stock in any brand of knee brace. I’m on my second pair. I tried one pair for a season and was unhappy with the fit and strength of the brace. I then went to my orthopedic surgeon and asked for his advice. He told me they generally work with Don-Joy but would be happy to contact some other companies so that I could see what felt best. I found what worked best for me was CTiI2 custom braces made by Innovation Sports, but not at a bargain basement price, $1500-2000 a piece. The fitter fully cast both legs and sent the casts to CA for the custom fit. This was all done with a one-week turn around. Time and money, but the way I look at it is spend the money or else don’t ride at all. We all know that not riding is really not an option.I also found that with a letter of necessity from the orthopedic surgeon these braces are usually covered through your medical insurance company. If you have a durable medical equipment policy then postoperative equipment needed to get around such as crutches and braces are covered. Of course I did not so I had to wait until my policy was renewed. The insurance companies do not make this wide known. They keep it their little secret. With a small fee of about four dollars per month it can be added to any policy. There are many braces out there. It is not necessary for everyone to run right out and get custom knee braces. There are plenty of companies making quality off-the-shelf braces. Exo-Skelton, EVS, and Asterisk to name a few. I found in my situation because of weight training, cycling, and genetics thanks to my grand mom. I needed an extra-large quad brace made with a medium knee cup and a large calf brace. Off the shelf braces were not going to work for me. Generally off the shelf braces will work for most people. The multiple adjustments can accommodate a variety of sizes. The way I look at it, in the long run, braces are a cheap insurance plan. Here are a few phone numbers and addresses if you would like to check out some knee braces. Also, the website www.arthroscopy.com/sp05001.htm provides a computer animation of basic knee motion along with knee joint anatomy and function, this way you will better understand what is hurting if you ever tweak your knee.

When it comes time to replace components on our bikes or ATV's it's nice to know that we have choices other than stock. Let me first say that I am in no way knocking stock parts. They are without a doubt first class in their design and construction. But having other options available is a good thing especially if your first choice is backordered.

Body plastic. Fenders, Radiator Shrouds, Numberplates, with every crash or roost our bikes start to look shabbier and who wants to race an ugly bike. There are 3 major plastics manufactureres but only 2 are of any interest to us and they are both Italian based companies, UFO and Acerbis. Both make plastic replacement parts that are as good as stock but at a much better price. You can get a full set of plastic right down to the mud guard flap on your airbox for about $160.00

Control cables. Motion Pro is a U.S. company that makes high quality teflon lined replacement cables Handlebars Grips Tires and Grafix. These are areas that have a huge selection, nearly everyone has jumped on these bandwagons with their own ideas on what is the perfect design. The benefits to us are that we can personalize not only the appearance but also the performance of our bikes.

Triple clamps. Here is another big choice item, many will be purchased merely for aesthetics but there are some that offer better performance characteristics, two that come to mind are the TAG matrix clamp and RG3's clamps both with their unique rub-ber mounted handlebar clamps. Keeping engine vibration out of the bars is always a good idea but giving us a design that eliminates that annoying bar twist every time you fall is even better.

Linkage bearings. A great substitute for the stock items when you have to do a major overhaul is the All Balls kits. There are three types of kits, one for the swingarm, one for the suspension linkage and one for the shock. They contain all the bearings, seals, spacers and collars that will need to be replaced and at a fraction of the cost of stock parts. They also offer steering head bearing kits, Crank Bearing and seal kits and Wheel Bearing kits, they are also a local outfit located right here in Pottstown just off Rt. 100.

We have plenty to choose from in the engine parts category as well. Two very good choices for pistons are the NIKS Pro-X and Wiseco. The Niks is a cast piston nearly identical to the stock piston and the Wiseco is a forged piston. Forgings are generally stronger than castings but for the amount of time we should run a piston before replac-ing it either one is a very good choice. A benefit of the Niks piston is that it is available in A, B and sometimes C sizes. The benefit is that you can find a piston that is a perfect fit for your engine. The size difference from an A to a B is .01 mm. In the course of a season you can wear .01 mm off your Nicasil bore and being able to purchase a piston that fits that bore more closely is a performance benefit. But a warning, if you don't have the bore gauges needed to accurately measure your cylinder bore just get the piston that was originally spec'd for your engine. Sticking a C piston in an A cylinder that isn't worn can have dire consequences.

Gaskets. My first choice when it comes to gaskets is always stock. Stock gaskets always are a perfect fit and in some instances their make up is superior to an aftermar-ket one. A perfect example of this is Yamaha Blaster base gaskets. The stock gasket has a thin steel inner body that eliminates the possibility of blowing out a base gasket, a common problem on earlier Blasters. No aftermarket gasket I have seen is designed like this for the Blaster. Having said that I have had very good luck with a gasket com-pany from Italy called Athena. Their top end and complete kits are well made and contain every gasket, o-ring and washer that you will need for the job. Definitely a good option. Athena is now offering Cylinder kits as well for the YZ125 and a few otheer models. They include a new race ported cylinder with powervalves, a piston and gasket kit and in the Works package a cylinder head, all for around $500.00 Compared to stock parts that price is a savings of over $200.00

Connecting Rod kits. Other than stock the Niks Pro-X and the IMS Pro series are the ones I recommend, we have installed them in numerous engines with no problems at all and there is usually a generous cost savings in their price. If I am building a Kart or Micro Sprint engine though I prefer the stock rod as they have proven more durable in sustained high rev conditions.

Clutch plates. Here I absolutely believe that the stock stuff is the best, my pet peeve about aftermarket plates is that they tend to drag a bit for the first few hours after which they perform as well as stock. Personally if I don't have to break a part in then I'd rather not.

Air Filters. This is one of those categories where the choice is simple. Twin Air has been making the best foam air filters for as long as anyone can remember and the fac-tory teams must agree with me because they've been using them for over a decade. A quick word on gauze filters, I think they are the absolute best for street bikes but not for

oem vs. aftermarketReactive Suspension By Andy Fleck & Al Carrwww.reactive-suspension.com

off road use. A gauze filter will flow very well initially but begins to clog very quick-ly in dusty conditions. People that use the gauze filters usually are ATV owners and they choose them for their ease of maintenance, for best overall performance in an off road application the foam filter is the best choice. Check out Twin Air's new line of Oil filters as well.

The aftermarket also offers us fixes for design problems that might arise with a new model. Take for instance the new RMZ and KXF250's and their cooling issues. Boyesen now has their waterpump cover and impeller that flows significantly more coolant than stock as well as allowing you to change your oil without draining the coolant. Couple this with some Engine Ice coolant and the bikes are more than able to cope with MX applications.

Bikes have gotten better and better each year but thankfully the aftermarket keeps offering us exciting new options not only to keep them running but to make them better yet. As always if you have any questions about anything concerning your bike please call us at the shop or catch us at the races, we are always happy to help.

sleepy Hollow mini track april 10, 2004The Sleepy Hollow Motocross Park in Fredericksburg, Pennsylvania kicked off their annual pre Easter Race the Saturday before Easter under warm sunny skies with a record crowd on hand. Sleepy Hollow offers two courses at their facility, a larger full blown course for all AMA classes and a smaller beginner track for the peewee and youth divisions. Second year track owner Jere Swarr continues to improve

his facility and is draw-ing larger crowds every time he hosts an event. Over 800 racers from AMA District 6 showed up to do battle on this Holiday weekend. There were 46 different classes available plus Adult 50cc mini bike racing, five foot trophies were sponsored by West Shore Suzuki in M e c h a n i c s b u r g , Pennsylvania.

At the mini track in the first moto of the XR70/XR80 division Devin Sheldon on the (402) bike grabbed the holeshot followed by Justin Ziegehfus, Steven Rambo, and Cory Recla. Rambo made his move early and quickly got by Ziegehfus, Sheldon and Rambo were able to pull away slightly as the (5) Recla and (13) Ziegehfus were doing battle in the third and fourth posi-tions. After a few laps this allowed the two to gain momen-tum and on the final lap they both passed Rambo, and Recla was able to edge out Sheldon for the win. In the second moto,

Austin Ensor from Forrest Hill, Maryland riding a modified XR50 was able to seize the early lead against the bigger bikes, but by the third corner, Recla was able to take the lead followed by Sheldon, Rambo, and Ziegehfus. At the checkers it was Recla for the overall, rounding out the top five were Sheldon, Rambo, Ensor, and Michael Gialloreto.James Heikel riding the Yamaha was able to grab the holeshot in the first moto of the 100/125 four stroke class, followed by another Yamaha pilot Colton Lenig, then Honda mounts, Edgar Bixby, and Curtis Carr. Series points leader Charles Lengle round-ed out the top five. Heikel was able to hold the lead at first, but both Lenig and Lengle had other plans. The two raced head to head for a few laps and as in the earlier XR70/XR80 race, their momentum car-ried them by the leaders with Lengle snatching the top spot. In moto number two Lengle fired out of the gate for the lead followed by Lenig, Carr, Bixby, and the (831) Yamaha of Trevor Bull. Bull finished sixth in the first moto and looked like he had a new agenda to finish out the day. The Yamaha’s of Lengle and Lenig had the lead but the real race was for the third, fourth, and fifth positions. Bull waited for the final lap to make his move, for a moment it looked like he would pull the third place spot going though the finish line rhythm section. It wasn’t to be on this day, both Bull and Carr got tangled up and this allowed Bixby, Heikel, and Justin Massar to round out the top five. slEEPy hOllOw Pre Easter Race – April 10, 2004 Wow, is all I can say. What a day, over 800 racers showed up at Sleepy Hollows Annual Pre-Easter event in early April. The weather and the competition was great. The gates were full in most classes with consolation races having to be held in some cases to be able to accommodate all the riders. In the 125 / 250 A divisions Casey Clark swept all 4 motos edging out Joe Robertson in the 250 ranks and Mike Schneck in the 125 class. Jim Mcilvaine took the honors in both the 25 + A and Vet A races. Robert Huston who was win-

ning races when I was a kid took both motos in Senior A action. Michael Davis Jr. was your 250 C champ with Wayne Powell once again getting the 125 Novice win, Willy Toth took Schoolboy with Keith Santora making the trip from New Jersey to grab the College Boy win. A few mini champs on the day included Broc Schmelyun and Addison Kramer, Kyle Sidle won the Super Mini division with Dylan Brackovich winning both the 85cc 7-11 and 65cc 10-11 classes. In quad action, Andy Ehrenzeller

scored the Open A and Production A wins with Ian Tolbert sweeping both

motos in Production B and the quad Anything class. Tristen Schrader took the 0-301 checkers with Andrew Pruzinsky taking home the 90 Mod win. Sleepy has also added adult mini bike racing to their schedule on their mini course, racers were riding everything from stock production mini cycles to full

blown modified CRF50’s with over 15 HP. What a hoot, Casey Clark took the PRO Class on his 107cc Extreme machine. The adult mini races are being sponsored byR & D Powersports and Precision Racing Components, you can check them out on the web at www.xtrememinis.com Sorry we didn’t have room to publish results from over 46 classes and 800 + racers in the pages of MRA, for complete race results log onto www.sleepyhollowmotocross.com – Jim Bull MRA

tri-DistriCt CHallenGeroCKet raCeWay - april 11, 2004

The first annual Tri-District Challenge Cup was promoted by Mark Carlton owner of Rocket Raceway in Three Springs, Pennsylvania. The Tri-District Challenge pitted riders from three of the largest dis-tricts on the east coast and included AMA Districts five, six and seven. Rocket Raceway is the ideal location for this type of event, it is centrally located between the three districts and they offer a European style grand prix track that is suit-able for amateur riders but allows for the big horsepower bikes and the high speeds of expert racers as well. This years event was held on Easter Sunday and started with a mix of rain and snow flurries in the morning, it was cold and damp but the crew at Rocket had their course in excellent condition considering the extreme weather that had been thrown at them all week long. Not only did the winning district get the cup and the bragging rights, all the class winners from that district got a free pass good for practice on the Rocket course. In the first moto of the 125C division, Yamaha mount Carl

M i c h a e l grabbed the holeshot followed by district six racer, Track and Trail/Valley Drive Racing spon-sored Kyle Messerman then district fives/Angels World of Cycles/Boulevard Cafe jockey Jay Wetzel, then Rockets own Jack Carlton on his KTM. By

the mid point of the first lap Michael was passed by Messerman, Carlton and Wetzel. Messerman stayed on the gas and had a six second atvantage at the checkers. In moto number two

it was Wetzel with the holeshot this time followed by Messerman, Michael and Carlton. Michael made his move early on Messerman but was not able to hold his position. Messerman pushed Wetzel the entire race but was unable to stick the pass. Wetzels 3-1 was good for second overall with Messermans 1-2 taking the overall for district six. Wetzel also competed in the College Boy and the 250 C Divisions where he brought home wins for district five. Kyle Messermans father Ken was also on hand to represent district six. Ken took the gold in both the Vet A and Senior A ranks.

In the first moto of the 250A division another district six rider Cumberland Kawasaki/PR2 Racing/Thor/Smith/Bridgestone pilot Dustin Kendall nailed the holeshot and ran away with the moto. Kendall put on a repeat performance in the second moto, rounding out the top five was Benjamin Bixler, Broc Seiler, Jason Eckard, and Michael Foor. All three districts were represented at this years cup. District six came out on top with the most overall wins followed in second by district five then district seven. JAY WETZEL…Jay Wetzel may be a latecomer to the sport of racing motorcycles, but he asked for his first bike at age 2. He was told he could have a motorcycle when he was 5 and he didn’t forget! He’s been woods riding since.

Now starting his second full season and third year of racing AMA events, Jay secured a new sponsor in ANGEL’S World of Cycles, Rostraver, PA and is now riding for TEAM GREEN out of District-5.

Jay eats, sleeps, drinks and dreams MX, AX, bikes---RIDING!! He tries to practice everyday and races 3 classes in AX and MX events every weekend.

Jay is known at the D-5 tracks as the kid who races in a cast, as plaster has been part of his gear at least three times (broken foot, broken ankle, broken thumb) over the last year or so—he’s even earned trophies while broken!

A broken collar bone, suffered in the practice session at Camelback Raceway during the 03 PA State MX Championships, finally sidelined Jay to the stands and pit-crew for his 6 year old brother, Josh, Cobra #707, 50 Classes I and III. “Joshie” as he is known in D-5, loves racing as much as his brother. Without finishing the series, Jay man-

aged two top ten finishes: 8th in 250C and 9th in 125C classes at the State Championships.

The 2004 season started with a bang for Jay when, as a way to practice and recover from the collar bone injury, he attended the Ohio State Indoor Arenacross Championships in January, finishing 3rd in 125 Novice, 4th in 250 Novice and 11th in Collegeboy class, overall.

Jay’s early practice this year turned to gold when he ended up qualifying, top 3, in 125 Novice class in the Mid America Region for the 2004 Arenacross Amateur World Finals to be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, in conjunction with the 2004 MAXXIS U.S. Open, in October. Jay is very excited at the prospect of battling for the top finishes at the AX Amateur World Finals among the very talented group of 18 racers who have qualified from across the country, in his class.
