Hello Race Fans! Happy October - Where did the season go? It seems like just last week we were at the Motorama Season Opener. One good thing the temperature has cooled down, no more 90 degree race days. I guess the down side is that winter is right around the corner. We have a few more weeks of MX Racing left here in the district with 3 more D-6 point races. On the flip side, the Hare Scramble and Short Track Racing is picking up again, so there is still plenty of racing action out there to participate in this year. New this month in MRA we've started an "ATV Section", even though we call our paper 'Motorcycle Racing Action' we plan to include all types of off road racing in our publication. In the coming months, we are hoping to pro-vide coverage for Hare Scrambles and Short Track Racing along with Motocross for both bikes and quads. The bottom line is we want to recognize all aspects of our sport and provide more coverage to you, our readers. The October issue will be the last regular monthly issue of the season. Keep your eyes open around mid-November for the next issue of MRA. If you're not a subscriber, you'll have to look for that issue at your local dealer. We then take December and January off and get ready for the season opener in early February to kick off the Motorama Speed Show. Watch that issue to feature Track Champions and Points Series Winners for this year. Again, thanks for making our first year as new owners of MRA, a success. We look forward to the coming season to making more new friends and to provide you with more exciting race coverage. Any ideas or suggestions please let us know, and remember your support helps support the Sport.

• 4 The Beta Story

Like James Brown says in his opening song "I'm back". I hope some of you remember me. I am the guy that gave you such stories as "there ought to be a trophy" and "Have you heard the one about" or "insurance for racing" or happy pit fathers day" and my first story, titled "I stopped my mid-life crisis on the first lap", that was my favorite. All of those stories I wrote were about the crashing and bending or braking of parts (mine and the bikes) during my comeback in racing after 8,400.75 days off. That's 23 years for those of you without a calculator.

In the story "have you heard the one about" I wrote about my big crash and the flag man that undoubtedly saved my life. Well in that crash I blew out c4 and c5 disks in my neck and have been out of competition since. I did run one race after the big get off but the pain was a pain. I have spent the last 2 years getting my neck back in shape and as soon as I can get the extra tonnage off that I accumulated since being inactive I intend to try it again.

Some advice for those that want it. I went to two doctors that wanted to fuse my neck. They both had average offices, no partners and expensive cars in the parking lot. One was a new Porsche Boxer. The last Dr. I went to had a beautiful huge office with lots of partners. I have no idea as to what he drives since "his" parking lot was full. Dr. number 3 said that if I could handle the discomfort for a while he could manipulate my neck with therapy. I handled it and he manipulated it and I am just fine today. Don't let any doctor tell you that you have to get welded; there is a very good chance that your Dr. is in the market for a new hot rod.

What I then did to keep active in racing was get a job in the motorcycle industry. I went to work at Cosmopolitan Motors in Hatboro, PA. I used to get help racing from "Cosmo" back in the early 70's so here is where I wanted to work. The president of Cosmo knows everybody in this industry. You name the racers from Bobby Hill in 1951 and Bart Merkel to Evel Knievel, in some way or another they all rode for or with Cosmo's help. I've met Nixon, Kuruthers, Du'Hamel, Fisher Mann, Farachee, Rottigni, Weil and the list goes on through Cosmo. Knievel used to get his tires from Cosmo before he was Evel and Lance Weil is now working here too. You might remember him as the man who helped pioneer the disc brake. He was Road racing for Harley in Europe and he had the first disc on two wheels. He has the distinction of winning more races in Europe that any other American racer and I think that record still holds. He had the first 3/4 helmet in that venue and the Bell helmet Company gave him their first full cover helmet to race in Europe and the Europeans wouldn't allow it. After looking over the market we decided to start in the peewee class. We found a chassis manufacturing Company and then mated them up with an engine Company. We all know that everything good comes from Italy. I say that not because my mom is Italian but because it is a fact. The Beta Co. had been manufacturing great bikes since the Stone Age. Their Trials bikes have more world titles that anyone. The bottom end of the engine that they make for us is the same bottom ends that KTM, Lem and Husky use. It is bullet proof and a superior design. KTM, Husky and Lem, as we do also use our own top end. We went one step further and we use our own clutch too.

Water-cooling is not very important in this class so we opted to loose the feature. That saves a bunch of money. Beta and their people come up with an exclusive clutch for this bike that no one has. The porting and piston work are so well finished that you would not believe it could be done in a production run. The Barrel is cast Iron and has no nicasil plating. There again a huge savings. The cast iron warrants a 3 minute warm up only. A 19mm De'llorto feeds the case fed engine. A 12mm is on the Jr. model. We have Paoli forks and a Paoli adjustable shock. The bike has disc brakes fore and aft with cables. The 10-inch aluminum San Remo rims are mounted with Pirelli tires. Stock gearing is a 10-tooth counter with a 43-tooth steel rear sprocket. Others are available in aluminum rear and steel counter. Tomasilli controls round out the picture.

This bike is so nicely built that we knew we could get top dollar for it. Now, I need to get a bike on the track so we started looking for a rider. I asked around and tried out a few kids without any real luck. A dealer I sell to in Hammonton NJ came to me with a proposition. He had a kid who was running out of his shop who could probably get the job done.

Charlie Perna of P & L Cycles in Hammonton NJ got the contract. I set him up with our first bike to get to the U.S.A. He has been racing himself since the 70,s and has been tuning bikes as long. He built the motors for Jake Johnson who currently is a pro flat tracker and from the gossip on the dirt about to sign a big contract himself. Charlie's current riders are always in the point's race each year and he is know for fast bikes.

We got 105 of the Beta's here in time for AMA certification but had already missed the first two Loretta Lynn qualifiers in our District. My kid "Brett Forman" road the Beta for the first time in the Budds Creek qualifier of this year. He hadn't had time to get it dirty before then. There were a mess of Cobra's and as many KTM bikes in that first ride. I think the field had 38 bikes in it all together. Bret was also a little overwhelmed at the class of riders and the expensive haulers at this particular race. He did his best and with the wrong gearing and bad jetting he pulled off a 12th and a 14th, not bad for a fist time outing.

Brett has since turned into a little monster on the "Mongoose" as we now call it. It was a long and hard road tuning that bike and getting him comfy on it but now the work has paid off. I have to give some of the credit here to Brett's older brother Chris. Chris races a KX65 and a YZ 85. 12 year old Chris is coming off a broken foot and has worked his way back to 3rd in the 85 class and 2nd in the 65 class points standing. He takes Brett out on practice days and spanks him pretty hard. I wish we had a bike for Chris to ride that would be neat with the two brothers. Maybe next year. Brett's parents, Linda and George also put in a lot of time with this. George also races in the over 40 class. He has his hands full on race days when I am not there and Charlie is too busy to work on the bikes.

That is what we do here at Cosmo. When Cosmo is at the track I work on all the Beta's. There is another Beta rider who is coming along nicely. He is Michael Frankenfield. He rides the #188 Beta. He got his first 1st place finish just this month. He usually runs in the top 5 so I am looking for good things from him. One other little guy here on a Beta that is just beginning would be Sebastian Arcana. He rides the

#11 Beta and is new to this. He's come a long way in a short time and is just now starting to wick it up.

Sebastian's dad Joe has a deli and we try to get him to bring hoagies to the track. He can build a screaming hoagie so we want to keep him coming. Michael's dad races also, he rides a KTM. This father and son thing is great and it really is good quality time and produces some good results. All my kids are good kids. They are respectful and well behaved. This is a good confidence and character builder. I work on all the 50cc bikes at the track. I will help any dad who asks. All the parents are nice and most try to be helpful. There are a few challenges every now and then. But we will be weeding them out with some new rules. This is a good sport for a family outing.

We here at Cosmo want to offer a quality product for a reasonable price with good parts availability. I think we have achieved that. We will never "not have a part". Anyone who needs a part can get it when they pay for it. I have a vast parts supply. If for some unknown reason we would not have a part on the shelf then I will personally pull it off a bike in the box. You will never hear otherwise.

I have held the introductory price of $1999.00. The new 2003 bikes will be here shortly. The only improvements to the 03 bikes will be the 12 inch front wheel and Hydraulic brakes fore and aft. These parts can be refitted to any of the 02 bikes at any time. We will also have the Jr Mongoose here soon. It will be very much the same bike as the pro but with a 12 mm De'llorto and possibly a smaller rear shock with the 10-inch tires I am now waiting to here the new rules from the AMA.

So here is the deal. You buy a new Beta Mongoose for $1999.00 and race it in any Sanctioned race and send the results to me, Joseph Purshock III at Cosmo and we will give you $200.00 on the books in BB's or a $100.00 cash refund. That's $200 in Beta bucks that can be exchanged for parts or a payday of $100. It's your call.

The price of the 2003 bike is not worked up yet. But since it will have the upgrades we all know it's gonna put a bigger dent in your kid's allowance.

The following are the race results for this season in no particular order thus far for Brett Forman on the #7 Beta.

To maximize airflow and release the hidden power in your race nike, replace your stock intake valve with a Boyesen RAD Valve.

Integrated into the seamless, tenzalloy chamber is a quadrant of aerodynamic directional dividers. This patented, dyno-proven system power channels the charge evenly for instant, explosive movements of air at velocities of up to 500 MPH. Intelligently controlled by a set of Pro Series Reeds, you’ll get maximum flow velocity across the entire RPM range, and at all throttle settings.

Each Boyesen RAD Valve is unique — tailor-made to a single model, year and displacement. While other aftermarker valves might change flange sizes or bolt patterns, they’re basically generic — and require you to irreversibly cut your intake boot to install! But with the RAD Valve, there are no compromises in power, no modifications needed.

A true, bolt-on power boost: no kidding, no cutting.

The 1st Ruleof Two-Stroke Performance:More Air = More PowerOnly maximum air intake, correctlyaccelerated and distributed into the crankcase can deliver maximum power.

In life there are many odious tasks we must undertake but none more so than a mud race. The easiest way to deal with racing in the mud is simply not to. Check the weather forecast and if there's more than a 70 percent chance of rain, stay home. Hey that works. But that's not for everybody. Sometimes you have to do it, like it or not. The key to winning a mud race is preparation. Many people lose before they even start because they just aren't prepared for the mud. Lets face it its hard to concentrate on racing if your cold and wet, right? So we need to start with plenty of extra gear. Most of us have old race gear from past years so dig it out and carry it with you. You need to arrange for at least three sets of gear to wear through the day. These would be practice, first motos and second motos. If you can't assemble that many sets of gear then go out and buy a couple of pairs of cheap coveralls at the local Walmart, you may look a bit unstylish but at least you'll be able to peel off that layer of mud after the race. If you can assemble more than three sets, that will be helpful if you're racing more than one class. Also don't forget plenty of towels, extra socks and underwear, dry MX pants over wet underwear do little to put you in the right frame of mind for racing. Extra goggles are a necessity as well as plenty of tear offs. You should have all your goggles prepped before practice and wrapped in paper towels to keep rain drops off them on the way to the line. Rain has a nasty habit of getting not just on but under the tearoffs, nothing like trying to race while looking through a goldfish bowl. Another essential item is an umbrella it'll keep you out of the rain between motos when you're out walking around checking out how the track conditions are changing and it'll keep you dry that extra bit longer on the line. Mom, Dad, Brother, Sister, Wife, Girlfriend, Husband, Boyfriend (politically correct) there's always someone you can shanghai to come down to the line with you and hold that umbrella.

Your helmet visor is designed to help deflect roosts, in a mud race it needs to be longer. An old goggle lens taped to the end will help keep a lot of roost off your goggles, also some guys like to tape a sponge to the top of their hel-mets, this minimizes mud buildup keeping your helmet light. Handguards are also a big help. Acerbis flag handguards are well designed and will work quite well to keep mud off your hands and grips while you are upright and riding, if you fall and drop the end of the bars into the mud you are pretty much screwed as its nearly impossible to get the mud off without getting it all over your gloves as well. Some pros tuck a rag into the back of their pants. This is the part of you thats going to see the least amount of mud so the rag stays fairly clean if not dry. If you do crash the rag

can be used to wipe off your grips and gloves so you can continue. The key though is not to crash so lets cover what we need to do to not fall.

Riding in deep mud is a bit like riding in deep sand, you want to keep the power on and the front end light. Backing off will make the front end sink, you need to keep your weight back over the rear wheel for traction. If possible avoid using the brakes if the mud is deep, instead back off a little on the throttle to cut your speed before a corner then when you have slowed enough get back on the power before entering the corner and power through and out of the corner. Jumps should be treated with caution as they may only have one line. This line will generally lead to the best landing spot. Getting off this line can mean landing in some deep mud, if this happens just make sure you have the throttle pinned before touchdown, hopefully the bike will continue to move forward and not stop dead. Winning a mud race is about falling less than the other guys and most get offs will occur when you are not on the throttle.

When the pros anticipate a mud race their mechanics will add preload to the fork and shock springs or simply install heavier springs. They do this to compensate for the added weight of the mud on the bike. This is a bit too difficult for the average rider at a race but you can turn your compression clickers in which will help compensate somewhat for the 25 lbs. of added ballast.

Generally only one racing line forms in a mud race which makes passing difficult. The biggest advantage you can give yourself in a mud race is mud tires. I can't tell you how many guys I see racing in the mud with the same tires as they use at a dry dusty track. Having a good set of mud tires is like cheating. Mud tires have wide spaced knobs, the reason for this is it allows the mud to fling off while the tire is spinning. A hard terrain tire will simply load up with mud and supply very little traction. With the correct tires you will be able to use other lines to pass. The majority of us cannot afford an extra set of wheels with mud tires installed but we can afford to carry the tires. If you are a racer you should know how to change a tire, if you don't then start practic-ing at home. Changing a tire should take about ten to fifteen minutes, with practice this is easily achieved. If you can get confident changing tires then you will have the advan-tage of always having the right tires for the right conditions. If you can't be bothered then don't expect to win.

A pressure washer is also a necessity at a mud race, I won't go into how to wash your bike thats a whole 'nother article and since nearly everyone at the races these days brings a pressure washer with them you all know how to wash your bike.

Finally I'd like to talk about the end of the day clean -up. Bring along some plastic gar-bage bags so you have someplace to put your wet muddy gear, As soon as you get home take it out of the truck/trailer and put it all in a tub full of cold water, thats right cold water. Hot water will actually cause the dirt to set in the fabric resulting in stains, this is probably why so many racers have brown race gear. Let it soak overnight and then machine wash the next day, I used to use Electrolux carpet cleaner as a detergent to keep my white JT pants their whitest and it worked, but any of todays modern detergents should do just fine. Jerseys can be thrown in the drier, while pants and gloves and goggles (which can be washed in the washing machine after removing the lenses) should all be line dried.

Remember, wining a mud race is all about being prepared so start getting your stuff together because sooner or later its gonna rain.

Designed to help you keep your bike in tip, top shape.

How can I improve the handling of my bike through simple maintenance?

Many people neglect simple maintenance procedures that could improve the handling of their bikes. Suspension performance definitely plays a large role in your bikes handling characteristics. If your bike isn’t valved correctly you can bet it won’t handle very well. We covered all this in another article, so moving on, what else can you do to make sure your bike handles well? Be sure that your linkage, swing arm and steering head are greased and cleaned regularly.

We get customers coming into the shop all the time that complain of poor handling and find out that they have no linkage or swing arm bearings left. The main cause for this is simply poor maintenance, but pressure washers also contribute to this type of problem. As everyone and their brother goes out and buys the biggest pressure washer they can find, then proceeds to wash their bike at a distance of two inches, it is no wonder that bearing and seals get destroyed. If you are going to wash your bike with a pressure washer be sure not to get to close to any bearing or seals. You will end up blowing mud and dirt into the linkage instead of blowing the mud off the bike. Instead of doing this use a brush or some other type of tool to get the big chunks of dirt off and then rinse off what is left at a respectable distance.

The next reason we see most linkage and swing arm bearings fail is because of a lack of mainte-nance. I have seen linkages in such bad shape that they will bind the rear end, and keep the shock from rebounding and compression at the proper speeds. You should completely disassemble and lube your linkage and all bearings at least three times a year, more if you are riding more than once a week. Although this job is not something most people enjoy, if you keep on top of your maintenance you should not have to replace any of the parts for a long time. The easiest way to do this job right is to completely remove the swing arm and all the bearings. Then clean out the inside of the linkage or swing arm and spray it down with carb cleaner or a similar solvent. Then replace all the bearings and apply a liberal amount of high quality grease. While your bearings should last a long time if taken care of, it is a good idea to replace the seals if they have any wear marks on them. The seals are what protect your bearings from water and dirt, and are rather inexpensive to replace. Having a well greased linkage and swing arm will allow your shock to work to its full potential. Remember to follow all your manufactur-ers recommendations when it comes to torque specs for all linkage and swing arm bolts.

Your forks also have some simple maintenance procedures that can be taken care of to keep them working to their potential. First of all make sure to keep your fork tubes as clean as possible. One mistake some people do make is to use contact cleaner on the tubes. This does clean them well, but leaves them very dry and can cause the seals lips to

stick, roll under and tear. The best way to clean your fork tubes is to wash them down will water and a mild soap. Then carefully pull down the wiper. Once you have lowered the wiper, take a strip of negative film or a similar material and slide it under the lip of the seal. Gently move it around the fork tube and pull down at the same time. This should pull any dirt that is between the lip and the fork tube out. This works especially well when you have a leak do to one or more pieces of dirt holding the seal lip open, after a muddy ride. Then before you slide the wiper back into place squirt a small amount of assembly lube into the wiper.

Your steering head bearings also need to be lubed and maintained on a regular basis. The easiest way to do this is to remove the front tire, the forks and the handlebars. Remove the nut that holds the top triple clamp and remove it. You should now see another nut that has to be removed before the bottom triple clamp is freed. Once apart all you need to do is clean both the top and bottom bearings. Rinsing them both with some sort of solvent if possible, then apply grease to both bearings and reinstall them. Be care-ful when reinstalling them to follow the instructions in your owner’s manual. If you over tighten the bottom bolt on the steering stem you will cause binding and friction when trying to turn. If you leave this nut too loose you will cause undo wear on the stem and bearings. Once you have properly installed your forks to the right height, torque the triple clamp pinch bolt to the specs in your owner’s manual. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. If you over tighten these bolts you can actually inhibit the performance of your forks and damage the interior components. Once your forks are installed, replace the front wheel. This is another step that many people do not take enough care in doing. When you tighten the axle, and it’s pinch bolts, do not pinch the bottom of the forks together. Before tightening the pinch bolts on the axle, make sure that the fork tubes are free to find their own relaxed position on the axle. If they are squeezed together at the axle, the forks will bind and not give you good performance at all. These last to things are common mistakes and we have seen many a novice mechanics cause themselves problems by not being careful on these steps.

Your suspension components are not the only parts on your bike to affect handling. If you don’t keep up with the maintenance on their corresponding components, you may find yourself chasing your tail and changing compression and rebound clickers, when the real problem is in your linkage, swing arm, steering head bearings, or axle pinch bolts. Your bike is a complete package, and in order for it to perform to its’ optimum potential, every aspect of your bike must be in perfect working order. Remember to prevent problems on the track or trail; you need to spend a few hours in the garage checking your bike over on a regular basis.

ADuLT MINI-CROSSTHe LANDINg MX 9-15-02 The Adult mini-cross was plagued by the weather channels view of horrible rain. The turn out was grim but the race action was fun. The biggest class was the stock 50 class. The mid sized/open carriage was less than half full and the open class had a few good riders. Michael Fink had a great day of racing with a sweep in the Open carriage/Mid class as well as in the Open class. His statement is he wants to have a Carmichael year in mini-cross. Phil Smith in the Stock 50 class took a solid 2nd to a friend and 1st place 50 winner Denny Williams on a borrowed Z50. The 50 Mod class was excellent with the 2 mod riders in the gate with the stock class. The Sayers brothers, Scott (#335) AND Mike (#198) showed us all what you can do with a 50. The skill it takes to race a 50 is incredible and these boys seem to have it figured out. By David Segal

Adult Mini Race 9/22/02Rausch Creek MX & ATV Part What a hoot? Adult mini bike racing at Rausch Creek MX & ATV Park. The day was overcast with occasional showers but I believe everyone that straddled a mini and strapped on a helmet had the time of their lives. The Jersey crowd was there on their Honda 50's - Split Rail SX made the 6 hour trip from Ohio on their full blown race 50's and their were a couple of good ole boy's from PA just having a blast on the big outdoor track on a cool September day. The day went off without a hitch - Rausch creek did a great job running the event. The format for the day was 2 twenty minute moto's, YES, 20 minutes + 2 laps. Hey, any of you motocross guys out there want to get some serious training in - come play with us on a Sunday. I would like to give honorable mention to 2 particular riders that entered 2 classes each. Ted Seeley & Timothy Flynn both deserve the Roger Decoster Iron Man Award. These guys ran 4 moto's back to back, that's 80 minutes for those of you without a calculator. Way to go guys. I'm telling you, if you want to have a ton of fun for not a lot of money, check out some Mini Bike Racing. Watch MRA & Rausch Creeks schedule for upcoming events in the near future. If you want to get in on some action this year yet, check out thelandingmx.com in Easton MD & also pitbikeracing.com from OHIO. See ya at the races. - Jim Bull, MRA

ATV maintenance is a very neglected area. Many people who race their machines on Sundays, put them away until Saturday night or Sunday morning of the next race week. You can have the fastest engine, and the best han-dling suspension, but if you break down or something falls off your quad in the middle of the race, it doesn't matter what you are riding. Here are a few tips to get you through race day with no surprises.• First thing to do is to clean your quad. It is much easier to work on your quad when it is clean.• After washing your ATV, start it up and let it run. No matter how well of a job you did, some moisture has probably gotten into your carburetor or engine.• Next, place your ATV on a work stand.• Check all parts, nuts and bolts on ATV for tightness.• Spin wheels to make sure they are rotating freely.• Remove all plastic and visually inspect your frame to detect any cracks or breaks.• Remove and clean air filter, let dry, then re-oil.• Remove wheels and inspect the brake pads, and remove any mud which may have built in the calipers.• Check spark plug and plug boot to make sure it is tight.

• Check chain and sprocket for wear and adjustment.• Double check all nuts and bolts for tightness. (It is also a good idea to put loctite on bolts for extra insurance. No one wants to be out there with parts falling off during a race or being in the middle of a jump and losing a part.)• Grease your a-arms, hubs, linkage, pivot bolt, and check and grease your carrier bearings.• Check and lube all cables, replace frayed cables, and lube your chain.• NOW, YOU ARE READY TO GO RACING.• Tips for between Moto's• Wash and/or remove heavy dirt from your quad. Then restart engine.• Do visual inspection of your quad.• Clean air cleaner and replace if necessary.• Lube and adjust chain.• Check all nuts and bolts for tightness.• Spin front and rear wheels to make sure they are spinning freely. Check tire pressure.• Finish by checking all fluids. (Gas, oil, and antifreeze)

Remember, the race only counts if you finish! Any questions you may have, feel free to call East Coast ATV at (215) 541-4985. We will be happy to help you out in any way we can.

District 6 Racers at the NationalsGrand national Cross Country is fastly becoming one of the premier ATV series in the world. With races spanning from Florida in March to Indiana in Oct. its a highly competitive 13 round series that sends racers into over 8 miles off back woods terrain. The GNCC series brings racers from all over the country, from the deep south and even Washington sate. Over the past ten years the series has seen champions from Indiana, Kentucky and of course Pennsylvania’s own eight time champ Barry Hawk. Here in PA the quality of our D6 harescramble series is reflected in the GNCC series by a number of very talented local riders. District 6 represents over 5 of the fastest running classes, Pro, Pro Production, 250A, Open A, 4strk mod, and the highly competitive Women’s class.

The most accomplished D6 ATV racer for the last ten years would have to be Saylorsburg, Pa’s Matt Smiley. Matt has dominated every D6 Harescramble he’s signed up for nearly ten years, with a grueling GNCC schedule Matt try’s to make as many D6 events he can. Matt has been all over the top ten in the GNCC Pro class and in recent years has set hinself apart from the rest by being the most consistent racer in the field. He now wears the #2 plate from last year and is leading one of the tightest points battles the series has ever seen! Matts’ new ProParts racng sponsored ride seems to be just what he needs to finally hold that number 1 plate.

Although he’s one of the sports young guns, Chris Borich from Sunbury, PA is setting a blistering pace not only on the track but in his accomplishments as well. He has one GNCC Pro win to his credit from 2001’s Wilderness race and finished fifth in the Pro series points in only his first attempt. This year he wears the #5 plate from 2001 and is currently on track to better his national standing to 4th fro 2002. This 19 year old D6 racer could be next in line to be one of only 4 Pro riders to hold the #1 plate in a 13 year span.

A new class for 2002 in the GNCC series is the Pro Production class. This class allows Production/stock frames and engine cases and was introduced to promote the participation of the major manufacturers. This class brings a large diversity of currently available sport ATV’s. We’ve also seen the return of another D6 racer Mike Krachun owner of Pro Parts Racing in New Jersey. After several top five years in the Pro class Mike took a few years off to explore some other types of racing. After several years away from the sport Mike is back promoting his business and tearing up the Pro Production class his sonsistent pace has landed him a position in the top three for points at this point in the season. Mike also leads the D6 harescramble series points with a slight lead over D6 veteran Daniel ketterer. Dan is currently fighting for a top ten points position at the GNCC’s and rides a modded 400EX with support from PowerlineATV /Herrmannracing.com and East Coast ATV. other 4 strk. stand outs from D6 include Pro team Cannondale Racer Tyson Thomas. Tyson is currently tenth in points in only his first year as a PRO. Tyson is also one of only four riders in the country to receive a full factory ride, something that hasn’t been seen since the late 80’s.

The other fast four stroke class at the GNCC’s is the 4strk Modified class. Rich Cecco has been on a roll this year and with a few more good finishes the class championship will be in his reach. Traci Cecco is still turning consistent laps in the women’s class at the nationals and even competes against the guys at D6’s. The Cecco’s are yet another PA based family race team thats atop there class at nearly every GNCC event they attend. For our big bore fans and Banshee riders the GNCC series offers a number of open classes, the fastest being the Open A class. Currently leading the class points in Open A is Lykens, PA’s Mike lucas. mike has been around the D6 Harescrambles for almost ten years and is currently in 3rd. for D6 A class points. mike has the place to hang with the nations top riders and we’ll have to see what class he decides to run in 2003.

Rounding out our list of top District 6 ATV racers is the Hertz Racing team of Rob and Tom Hertz. The Hertz brothers have been around since the beginning and have to my knowledge attended every D6 harescramble since 1992. tom races one of the series sharpest looking 250R’s in the highly competitive 250A class. He has shown new found consistency at the GNCC’s and has his first class championship in reach. Rob Hertz is another D6 fast guy that races at the PRO level. Rob currently wears the #14 plate from 2001 and is within he top ten in points. This could prove to be Robs best year ever as he leads the D6 harescramble points race as well as the PA State Championship over riders like Borich and Smiley. For 2003 Rob will be competing on a complete herrmannracing chassis (Herrmannracing.com) prepared by Powerline ATV. The Powerline/Herrmann Team will be the first major sponsorship deal of its kind for the Brookhaven, PA brothers, its already sparked 3 wins in the last 5 rounds of D6 competition. Best of luck with the new ride guys!!!

There you have it, ten fast District 6 ATV racers, 2 potential PRO class champions, 5 top ten PRO points contenders, 3 current class point leaders, 3 potential pro/am class championships and all of them compete against each other here in PA at the District 6 Harescramble events. Remember ATVing is an ever growing sport that has a number of local and Natinal venues. We will try to report as much action as our schedules will allow with upcoming reports on local MXers “going big” at the MX Nationals as well as a report on our visit to some local ATV Flat Track events. In addition to race reports we will be evaluating and testing new products, from a complete chassis to engine and pipe combos. remember to ride smart and support the sport you love, together we can take our sport to a new level!!!

Sleepy Hollow Bike

Giveaway 9-2-02

Sponsered by Bromley Suzuki, KTM & Polaris

KTM Pro Jr 50 winner 4 yr old Ryan Rand form Jackson, NJ. pictured above with Joe Bromley of Bromley KTM in Trevose, PA

True Sportsmanship My name is Russell Shutt, I am the father of Matthew Shutt, #5m, 4-6 Stock Rider in District Six. This is a short story that hopefully will show the true sportsmanship of the sport and why so many of us are involved in it with our children. This is our first full year of Motocross racing, so we decided to start out small and see if we had interest to follow the sport into our future. Matthew's previous experience only included one race at Motorama and one race at Sleepy Hollow in 2001 in the 4 to 6 oil injected class on his first bike, a Suzuki Jr 50. Matt was getting too big for the Suzuki and kept breaking the rear shocks after his big jumps. It was time to look for a bike that could handle the abuse that he was going to put it thru for the following year. As luck would have it, I found a used 2000 KTM 50cc pro-jr. in the paper for sale and decided to move Matt into the 4 to 6 stock class and let him get some experience for our first full season. To our surprise Matt was doing well right from the start of the season, winning in only the third race of this year. This sport was not only new to Matt, but to the whole family including myself. I had little experience with motorcycles and was at times in trouble if not for the help of a friend and the other fellow racing parents at the track. I didn't realize how much some of the other parents could mean to us until this past Monday, Sept. 3rd at Sleepy Hollow. During the practice session for the 4 to 6 stock class the KTM had shut off, the engine locked tight. We quickly tore it apart only to find that the rod bear-ing had seized to the crank. With some frantic work we had loosen the rod bearing, replaced the piston and rings and restarted the bike, but it was to late, the damage was already done to the bearing and there was no hope for the KTM to race today. Normally I would not have minded if we missed the race but Matt was second in points with only a tree point lead over the third place rider. As I was walking up to the sign in shed to withdraw Matt from the race I noticed several bikes for sale, I thought to myself "if only someone would let me borrow a bike for the day, we may be able to hold our points position." I had nothing to lose and decided to ask some parents for a loaner, my first stop was to a family I never met before. They had several bikes for sale, but the one that caught my attention was a 1999 Cobra CM50. I had told them that I had a strange request and gave them my predicament, offering to rent the bike for the day. With very little hesitation Scott Seal said yes and began to show me everything on the bike. These people were complete strangers to me and my family, I never met them before today and don't even know if they are regulars at Sleepy Hollow or if they were just there for the day. With a quick lesson to Matt and no practice time on the bike we got ready and prepared ourselves for a day of racing. In the first race Matt got the hole shot and was first into the turn, but unfortunately with not time on the bike he had locked up the rear wheel and went down, he regrouped and ended the race with a third place finish. With a minor adjustment to the rear brake we prepared ourselves for the next moto. Once again Matt go the hole shot and lead the entire race until and encounter in the last turn with a lap bike left the second place rider slip by for the win. Our family would like to thank the entire Seal family for loaning us the fast Cobra and helping my son to a second place finish overall in the days race and to the 2002 Sleepy Hollow MX points race. Without their kindness and generosity we would have been done for the day, and I would have had a very dejected little racer. Without a doubt, the Seal family has shown us what the sport is all about, SPORTSMANSHIP. To the entire Seal family, Scott, Fancy, Scott Jr. and to Porsha who told dad she didn't care if he loaned us her bike, From the entire Shutt Racing family we say THANK YOU! Sincerely, Russell Shutt
