Halloween not only brought out the ghouls and goblins this year, but also the champions of the 2009 MDRA Race Series. On Oct. 31, the fastest racers of this series got together for a practice/fun day at Doublin Gap MX Park followed by one of the best buffet meals you can get anywhere in the Tri-State region

at the Lighthouse Restaurant in Chambersburg, PA. On top of that, trophies, cash and products were awarded to this year’s champs to the tune of over $28,000.

Did I say “Wow” somewhere in all that mess? That’s right, the MDRA, now in its fifth year, continues to impress. Not only do they offer

some of the most competitive racing of any of the series out there, they are well organized and offer some of the best payouts around.

In 2010, they will be retaining their main series sponsor in Tucker Rocky Distributing. They are the parent company of the MSR, Answer and Pro Taper brands. Racers, please check out their contingency program. This year participants earned close to $2,500 total just for riding in their gear. Hey, you gotta wear something; you might as well get paid to do it.

This year’s big winner came in the form of Mike Bear riding out of Action Motorsports in York, PA. AMS is a sponsor of the MDRA Series, and Mike was able to notch out three class wins against some of the best “older expert riders” around (just kidding guys). The age classes offer some of the biggest turnouts and some of the most competitive racing in any day’s event. Many of these guys are warriors who have been out their doing it for a long time, and most of them can still get the job done.

2010 will also offer a new venue in

the form of the Pagoda Motorcycle Club. A 13th round was added to next year’s series, and the gang from Pagoda has always offered a top-notch facility. I’m sure it will be an exciting addition to the racing action. From what I’m told, the new schedule should be available soon, and you will be able to find that at www.mdramxracing.com along with the sign-up forms for the Tucker Rocky program. Also be sure to check out www.jimbullphoto.com for the year’s exciting race images.

The MDRA would like to thank you all for your support. Every single one of you are champions in their

book. Keep on racing, and we’ll see you in the New Year.

Correia and Tompkins Take Tri-State Championships The promoters of Broome-Tioga, Hurricane Hills and Raceway Park have teamed up to bring about a new event that would determine

a Tri-State motocross champion. This event was by invitation only, and all that was required was that racers finish in the top 20 of three very prestigious events: the New Jersey State Motocross Championship, the New

York State Motocross Championship or the Pennsylvania State Motocross Championship. A $3,000 guaranteed pro purse and special prizes for the top three of each class included custom hooded event sweatshirts, product contingencies from Bel-Ray and Factory Connection and tons of other prizes.

Miguel Correia and Jacob Beaudoin battled for the holeshot and the lead as the two led the pack out of the second turn in the opening Junior Mini moto. Correia had secured the point position by the fourth turn of the opening lap. Beaudoin, Schae Thomas, Trevor Pritchard and Joseph Tait rounded out the top five. Thomas passed Beaudoin on the flat track section, taking second. Beaudoin was displaced to third. Correia started lap three with a three-second advantage. Pritchard and Justin Yedinak rounded out the top five. Just after starting lap four, Thomas made a mistake, and Beaudoin re-took second. Thomas was displaced to third. Correia took the checkers 12 seconds ahead of Beaudoin. Thomas, Tait and Pritchard completed the top five.

Beaudoin, Pritchard, Danny Colachino, Correia and Thomas led the start of the final Junior Mini moto. Correia quickly diced his way to second by the start of lap two, then caught and passed Beaudoin to take the lead on the flat track section of the racecourse. Beaudoin was relegated to second. Thomas, Pritchard and Colachino rounded out the top

five. Correia took the checkered flag with a nine-second advantage. Beaudoin, Thomas, Pritchard and Tait followed.

Correia (1-1) topped the podium. Beaudoin (2-2) finished second and Thomas (3-3) third.

Thomas, Beaudoin, Correia and Kevin Tompkins led the start of the opening Mid Mini moto. Correia passed Beaudoin in the third turn and set off after Thomas and made the pass for the lead just prior to the start of lap two. Tompkins and Addison Emory diced past Thomas, taking second and third. Thomas was relegated to fourth. Tompkins reeled Correia in and made the pass for the lead after two and a quarter laps. Correia was relegated to second. Tompkins quickly pulled a gap

MAMA held the final race of the 2009 season Halloween weekend at Middleford Speedway in Seaford, DE. A total of 410 riders signed up for the weekend events, consisting of 33 classes held in 23 motos. Saturday started with a round of practice with periods of light rain and mist. The weather did nothing to stop such characters as big Turtle or Superman from getting into the spirit of Halloween and enjoying the day.

Senior Open and Support hit the gate to start the first set of motos, with Claude Willett #161 going 1-2 to take a first-place finish

in Open, while Mark Walker #29 won both in Support, with Gene Kaczka #17 taking second. Kaczka went on to win both motos in Super Senior Support as Jim Mandrin #79 went 2-1 to take the Open class. TJ Irvin won both motos in Collegeboy, as did Amanda Brown #293 in the Women’s class.

In Schoolboy, Zachary Page #479 won both motos, followed by Jace Zeman #137, who finished 2-2 in a field of 14.

Saturday evening brought activities for all, starting with the Race of Champions followed by a pig roast hosted by Mike Bowman, family and friends. It was Mike’s way of saying thanks for all the support he received following his injury earlier in the year. Donations were accepted to benefit the Fallen Riders Foundation. The celebration also included a chili cook-off with some excellent recipes as well as a variety of covered dish items. As the sun went down, the revelers began to appear

in their costumes to enjoy a night of trick-or-treating through the campsites. Yummies held a costume contest and games with prizes awarded for the kids.

Sunday brought another dreary day with the threat of showers making the track slippery and challenging. 250 A and B classes hit the track first, with TJ Irvin #77 following up on his success from Saturday with dual wins in the A class. Irvin want on later in the day to take the win in Open A over Andrew Benson #191, who finished 3-2 to take home second. Brock Richardson #909 won both motos in 250B, followed by Kyle Farren #37, who finished 2-2. Open C and 250C each held gates of 33 riders, with Zachary Page #479 finishing 2-1 to take the win in 250C and Cody Heath #882 going 1-3 to take the overall win in Open C.

Kenny Haday #21 went for back-to-back wins to take home first place in 250D. Austin Simmons #77 went 3-1 to take Jr. Mini, with Dalton Blettner #33 finishing 2-4 to take home second. Blettner also split wins with Nick Carruba #189 to take overall first in 80B 9-11. Sam Gale #529 won both in 80A, and Jakob Lopata #321 in C. In 80A 12-15 Charles Wernig #31 ran unopposed for the win, and Austin Moore #717 finished 2-2 to take the win in B over Dylan Blettner #32, who ran 1-3. Fabian Toye #8 made a great comeback after finishing 12th in the first moto and went on to take a win in the second, giving him a fifth-place finish. Samuel Fowler #159 showed his riding skills once again by sweeping the C class over 15 other riders.

Nick Carruba #180 split wins with Shane

Desell #71 in 60A to take the win, and Justin Rodbell #58 had a great day going 4 for 4 in 60B and 50A and following it up with a sixth-place finish in Jr. Mini. Austin Wood #12 finished off the 60 class with dual wins in C over a field of 31 other riders. Kyle Farren #37 traded wins with Travis Struder #122 to take first place in Schoolboy 14-16 4-Stroke, while Amamda Brown #203 split wins with E Wernig #31 in Mini Women Open. Haleigh Jowett #24x finished 2-1 to take the win in Support.

Parents and friends lined the track for the 50 classes assisting riders who were struggling with the wet conditions and getting them back on track. The conditions did not seem to bother Cody Groves #125, who went on to win both motos in 50B. Jonah Eng #54 also took the high line and avoided trouble and won both in Oil 4-6. David Valdez #530 won both in 4-Stroke, and Charles Canter Jr. # 605 also stayed on track and won both in Oil 7-8. Supermini ended regulation racing with Colin

As the sun was setting, the parents hit the track for the annual Parents’ Race. The races consisted of Moms, Racing Dads and Non-Racing Dads. Fun was had by all, especially those watching and cheering on their favorite rider. Parents race photos and Halloween photos are free to download at www.delmarvaspotsphotography.com.

President’s CornerD7 President’s CornerNext year for 2010 District 7 has three new tracks to welcome to its programs. Tomahawk MX has been a member of District 7 since its inception in 2004. Chad Gochenour has opened Tomahawk MX Park to the motocross series. Also, Chad has signed a lease with the owners of Mountaineer and is working on all of the permits so that he can re-open this facility back to motocross in District 7. District 7 welcomes the Gochenour family back to motocross in District 7. We wish them much luck and success and hope that all the cards fall in line so that our racers will enjoy these two new venues for 2010 in motocross. In addition to expanding the series, District 7 has followed suit to keep up with the rest of the region by forming a promoters’ group to run its motocross series. It will have new leadership and additional sponsorships to award the series contenders. With the addition of the new tracks, along with Evansville, The Landing Delmarva Motorsports Park, Rocket Raceway, Virginia Motorsports Park, Southfork and the internationally famous Budd’s Creek Motocross Park, our series should offer every racer a complete and exhilarating series. This promoter’ group promises to make enjoyable racing experiences for all participants. The third new track addition to our programs comes in the form of an invitation from Sleepy Hollow to host a District 7 ATV Motocross event at their facility. Jere Swarr would like the District 6 and District 7 competitors to race each other for the bragging rights. Jeremy Brandwein, District 7 ATV Chairman, is working with Jerre to make sure our dates will match. This opens up a new challenge that ATV racers from both District 6 and District 7 can enjoy.Steve Engel has taken on the position of ATV Hare Scrambles Chairman. Along with his wife, Laura, they promise to rejuvenate the series and get back its national prominence. Andy Langsdin, a top ten

ATV GNCC racer from the past, will give additional support to the series through his shop, Dirt First. Steve is currently working on the 2010 schedule and has posted a you-tube video on the district website, www.amadistrict7.com. Steve is looking for any additional sponsors and races venues for his 2010 series. On or around Dec. 1, District 7 mailed membership renewals for 2010. Please review your renewal and make any changes and return your form with payment. New for 2010 also will be online registration. We have aligned with Pay Pal to allow riders to join or renew and pay for their memberships online. This will expedite the renewal process and help us to update our records. So many of the applications, particularly those received from the tracks, are either incomplete or illegible. We hope that the online process will help with that. You can go to www.amadistrict7.com and select JOIN D-7 on the navigation bar. If you have any problems, please email [email protected] with questions or comments.Wayne Sody

MDRA President’s Corner

Hey All Racers…

I’d like to start by thanking

all the tracks and sponsors

of the MDRA Series for the

great 2009 season. Without you we would not be the series with

the HIGHEST AVERAGE RIDER TURNOUT in the vicinity. Thank

you all!

The MDRA should announce the 2010 race schedule in the next few

weeks. We do send out e-mails each week updating our members/

riders, so if you want to be added to our list, send your e-mail

address to [email protected].

Please keep referrals for sponsors in mind; any leads I receive are

appreciated and will be followed up on. We received many kudos

and compliments at the banquet on the series, and although we are

proud of what the series has become, we’ll never be done.

MAMA President’s Corner

MAMA Members,2009 has proven to be another wonderful year for the Mid Atlantic Motocross Organization and our members. Out of the 14 races scheduled, we were able to run 13. For 2010, we are continuing to look at various contingencies and other programs that will benefit our membership. There may also be a couple new tracks added to our agenda in 2010. We would like to thank all of our sponsors from 2009, as your support is essential and much appreciated by all of our members. Thank you to Cernic’s, JT Motosports, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kenda, Shenandoah Honda, Bletner Power Sports, Cycle Effex, RPM Graphics, Trackside, Motorcycle Racing Action, Jarmin, AJ Yummies, RNB and many othersRemember, this time of year is a time to reflect on our family and friends. We must be thankful for what we have for there are many that are less fortunate. Please keep our troops in your thoughts and prayers as they continue to deal with conflicts overseas.Thank you to the 2009 board, and congratulations to the incoming 2010

board. I also want to thank all the other volunteers for the awesome work that will continue to make MAMA the premiere motocross organization on the East Coast. As I have stated many times, it is our members that make this organization so successful. It is absolutely inspiring to see the teamwork and camaraderie within MAMA. Regardless of the competition or outcome of a race, at the end of the day it is about the MAMA family and how everybody will go out of their way to help a friend in need. May you have a wonderful holiday season and see you in 2010!

The Blue Diamond MX Park, located in New Castle, Delaware, held its final motocross event of the 2010 season with the seventh annual Blue Diamond Fall Classic. The event drew a decent crowd, but the entire staff at Blue Diamond made sure everyone had a fun race weekend. One huge supporter of the event was Amsoil/Pro Shop’s Greg King, who donated over $2,000 in Wawa gas cards to the day’s top three finishers. The gas cards put smiles on the riders and their parents for sure

at the end of the day! The amazing weather conditions made up for Blue Diamond’s last event, the Delaware State Championship held in late September, which was a huge washout after a Nor’easter struck the region throughout the weekend. The

blue skies and sunny weather put smiles on everyone’s faces throughout the day. Let’s check out who was on top at Blue Diamond!

The most talented class on the day was the Collegeboy 14-24 class. With top names out of the A and B classes like Stephen Stella, Tyler Wozney, Michael Anderson, Aaron Lampi, Charles Sherby, and many others, this class was a popular fence grabber for the fans. In moto 1, Tyler Wozney, on his Kawasaki, got a great start and led the entire

moto for the moto win. But Stephen Stella, who suffered a bad start, worked his way up to second and quickly gained ground on Wozney by moto’s end. Wozney held off the charge from Stella late in the moto, but it was Wozney in the end. New Yorker Aaron

Lampi, who is fresh into the B class after qualifying for Loretta Lynn’s in the C class, threw down the holeshot in moto 1 on his Suzuki RM250 two-stroke but finished out third in moto 1 behind Stella and Wozney, respectively.

Moto 2 saw Stella grab a much better start and lead the entire way. Wozney had the bad start this moto but made his way through the pack until he was held up by Kawasaki rider Michael Anderson, who held off an impressive charge from

Wozney. Anderson made a number of mistakes but was still able to grab the second in the moto. At the end, it was Stella going 2-1 for the overall win. Stella was also your Open A winner at Blue Diamond. Wozney, who also grabbed the 250 A overall win at Blue Diamond, betters out Anderson’s 4-2 finish with a 1-3 finish for second overall. Lampi goes 3-4 for fourth overall, and rounding out the top five was Charles Sherby, who threw down a consistent 5-5 finish.

The Super Mini 12-16 class was another exciting class to watch, as a duo of Blue Diamond’s top 85cc riders, Coty Schock and Nick Ferrell, went against each other for the first time. Both riders qualified for Loretta Lynn’s this year for the first time, and they both train and ride at Blue Diamond regularly. But Schock was the new kid

on the block in the Supermini class, as he has raced in the 9-11 age class this whole year until today’s race at Blue Diamond. Since Schock was 12 at the event, his family decided to get his feet wet in the older and faster 12-15 age group. In moto 1 of the Super Mini, it was Schock throwing around his YZ85 to the moto win over Ferrell. Suzuki riders Dallas Shahan and Dylan Blettner finished out third and fourth, and Kawasaki rider Ronald Perry finished fifth.

In moto 2, it was Ferrell grabbing the holeshot with Schock on his tail all moto long. Ferrell, who said this was his last race on his KTM 105 since he is planning to move up to the 125’s full time, ended the moto on a good note with the moto and overall win with a 2-1 finish. Ferrell is already making the transition to the 125cc machine, as he also took the win in the Schoolboy 12-16 two stroke class today at Blue Diamond. Schock goes 1-2 for second overall but came away with his first overall win in the 85cc 12-15 class at the Blue Diamond Fall Classic. Shahan was not too far behind the Ferrell/Schock

duo out front and finished out 3-3 for third overall. Perry got a 5-4 finish to beat out Blettner’s 4-5 finish for fourth overall. Blettner rounds out your top five in the Super Mini class.

More notable rides at the Blue Diamond Fall Classic:

- New York’s Aaron Lampi finished fourth in Collegeboy and sixth (Moto 2 winner) in 250 B.

- Maryland’s Lewis Mackay came away with two 2-1 finishes over Cole Martin to win the 250 C and Open C classes.

- New Jersey’s Charles Sherby goes 2-2 in 250 B over Brian Wasson and Jason Astudillo for the overall win.

- New Jersey’s Gage Solis swept the 65cc 7-9 class in

dominating fashion at Blue Diamond.

- Virginia’s James Shockey gets second overall in 65cc 7-9 but dominates the 50cc 7-8 class with a 1-1 finish.

- New Jersey’s Brandon Hartranft swept the Junior Mini 7-11 class and finished second in 85cc 9-11 behind Kirschner.

- Delaware’s Josh Willin’s 2-1 finish in Open B grabs him an overall win over Suzuki rider Cameron Siegel (1-3).

Tyler Wozney got second overall in Collegeboy and Open A but came through with the 250 A overall win.

Tyler Kirschner was unstoppable in the 85cc 9-11 and 65cc 10-11 classes with 1-1 sweeps.

HARRINGTON, DE-Honda rider Perry ‘Ace’ Phillips, of Coatesville, PA, earned a trio of wins Sunday Nov. 8, at Delaware Dirt Track Association’s Harrington, DE, 1/5-mile clay oval. Phillips produced wins in Pro, 450A and the event finale’s Cash Dash. In all three, he fought off challenges from National rider #88 Raun Wood the whole ride.

In 450A Phillips rocketed into the early lead with Wood getting beside him down the straights. Phillips went low in the turns to hold off Wood’s challenges. Wood looked high and low, but couldn’t get by Phillips’ Honda.

“I just tried to be smooth. I knew it was slippery,” Phillips described. “I knew I had to get a good start, be cool and keep smooth and not let him (Wood) get by me. The Honda bike handled good. The track got a little slick, and I had to be easier with the throttle than in the heats and practice. I want to thank #21 Racing and my girlfriend, Kim, No Fear, Super Trapp and Saddleman.”

Close behind Wood’s Honda in the top five were Suzuki pilot Ken Yoder, Rotax rider Tom McGrane, and Mike Poe’s Honda. Suzuki rider Travis Deim and Dalton Winkler rounded out the field.

Phillips finished the day winning the 10-lap Cash Dash for which he pocketed $100. After fighting off Wood for four laps, Wood went

down, giving Phillips an easy win.

“I just had to be smooth again,” Perry, noted adding. “I didn’t get a chance to change anything so I knew what to expect.”

Steve Lerch led 450 B riders across the stripe with brother Greg Lerch challenging him. Dan Jenkins was third across the finish line, followed by Bergman and Zafia for the top

five. Rounding out the field were Shain Bourassa and Cliff Diem.

Phillips wasn’t the day’s only multi-winner. Riders Billy Boram and Kyle McGrane earned double wins. Boram, of Cambridge, MD, soloed 65 and the ATV classes. McGrane did the same in 85 and 125B.

Phoenix, MD, based Suzuki bike rider Samantha Bergman captured the event’s first checkered flag, winning 100cc over Matt Langsher. “You just have to watch where everybody else is going and pick the right lines and make sure they don’t get in front of you,” said the 20-year-old winner. The bike handled great, but the sun was a little bit in the way.”

Honda-mounted Mike Poe led 10 Sportsman riders across the finish line with Rotax rider McGrane trailing close behind.

A very talented field of veterans trailed McGrane across the stripe.

Yoder took third, followed by Steve Lerch in fourth, with Deim rounding out the top five. Further back, Dalton Winkles, Roy Miller, Nick Henderson, Nick Arment and Ken

Haldman completed the top 10.

“Tommy McGrane runs a good race. It’s just that I got the holeshot and took advantage of that and won that one. The Honda bike was handling good I want to thank John Zafia for letting me ride their new ’09 450. It works real well and I appreciate it a lot.”

Rebecca Zafia ruled 250 B. The 16-year-old Baltimore, MD, based Kawasaki rider grabbed the holeshot and never looked back. Honda rider Greg Lerch and

Kawasaki-mounted Ron Mercer offered her early race challenges, but after a couple of laps Zafia stretched out her lead for the final laps.

“I got a perfect start and I just stayed focused, rode smooth, and led from start to finish. The Kawasaki bike handled perfectly. My trainer/mechanic Raun Wood set it up perfect for me.”

Ray Jenkins and Anthony Brandt bested the Vet classes, with

Jenkins leading the A riders and Brandt the B class. Jenkins had Scott Mullen’s Honda threatening from second, while Brandt fought off challenges from Ron Hipple.

“I got a good holeshot, and the

track came around,” Jenkins said after his win. “They watered it down a little bit, and it really hooked up and really worked well. The holeshot is everything here.”

Behind Mullen were Halderman, Dan Mullen and Arron Humphrey. Trailing Hipple were Wayne Dill, Dan Daugherty and Jerry Evans.

250 Sportsman’s checkered flag flew for Roy Miller, who had Nick Henderson and Ron Mercer trailing

him across the finish line.

The PA State Hare Scramble Series Awards Banquet was a great success. There was a great turnout for the event and a lot of awesome sponsors supporting it. The main sponsors of the event were Thor, Moose, and Parts Unlimited. They really helped out the series, and the riders are lucky to have such great companies backing them up. Moose is going to have a contingency program for the 2010

racing season – a great opportunity where you buy a Moose jersey and pants, and they will give you a free pair of gloves. Then throughout the season,

when they participate in 80% of the races, riders will earn Moose Bucks, $200 for adults and $100 for youths, toward the future purchase of Moose products. This is an awesome program that

gives back to the riders who sign up.

There were also some local dealerships that gave their support, including Scott Power Sport, Don’s Kawasaki, Rizzon Cycle, Montgomeryville Cycle Center, Bromley Motorcycle, Excess Energy Drink, Smith goggles, and tires by Pirelli. These dealers donated door prizes and also contingency prizes to the banquet. All the

sponsors are a great help and a big thanks to them for supporting what you all love to do. Just remember, these are the guys that are supporting you, so you

should return the favor and support them!

There were a ton of awards given out. If you were able to attend, you were definitely surrounded by a lot of really talented racers. Landon Wolfe won

championships in both youth m o t o r c y c l e and adult ATV classes; this is the first time in nine years that someone has done so. He was also awarded the KTM Support Ride along with Dieter W i l l e n b r o c k . These two lucky guys get to ride a brand new KTM for

a year given to them by KTM. Both were shocked and super excited by the award. Another noteworthy rider is Chris Borich, who was unable to attend, but is and has been the ATV champ for eight years now. So a big

congratulations to them and all the other award-winners of the night! All the winners got to go home with a lot of cool prizes and some awesome looking trophies.

The banquet also had the honor of MRA’s own Chuck Lister in attendance. He was able to go up and talk a little bit about MRA and its continued coverage of the D6 racing series as well as other races around the area. Also announced, there will be some class changes to next year’s races. There will be a 30+ C class added to the motorcycles. ATVs will have an AA , B 16+, B 30+, women’s, C 16+, and C 30+ classes added. Big thanks to ATV rep Jason Hughes, who did all the

necessary work to figure out all the changes that needed to be made.

Pictures from the night and 2008 and 2009 racing seasons are available at my website, egofocused.smugmug.com. Be sure to check them out and the amazing merchandise, which make great gifts for the holidays!!

I hope to see everyone at the D6 Banquet on January 30, 2010, back in Grantville. This will be another awesome banquet with more awards and prizes for a job well done. Award-winners will be getting their invitations soon. For more information, you can go to the D6 Hare Scramble website.

Recently at the PA State Hare Scramble banquet, our family was giventhe Sportsman of the Year award. This was so unexpected that we wereleft speechless. Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity toexpress our words of thanks and appreciation, which we were unable to at that moment.First we would like to thank the Bromley family, whose support to theriders and their families and their dedication to this sport is a trueinspiration. We would also like to thank everyone who nominated us and who supported Cody throughout the racing seasons. We are honored to receive an award for doing what many others would also do. That is the true pleasure of being part of this series.Everyone is like family, whether you only met them once or are runningdead even in points with them.So many people have helped Cody over the past several years, for example:Mr. Delong, whose son Craig was running one point away from Cody with only one race to go. Cody fell and got stuck. Cody looked up and saw Mr. Delong running down the hill to help him. There are so many others that have been there to give their support that we graciously share this award with them. Even the track owners themselves support the riders above and beyond. Codyrecently competed in Las Vegas. Dwayne and Tracy Fisher, ownersof Evansville MX Park, drove Cody’s bike to Vegas in their truck, sayingthey did it only because they wanted to help.Sincerely,The Gerhards,Bill, Donna, and Cody
