MOTORCYCLE RACING ACTION CONTRIBUTORS

I hope everyone had a great holiday season. While the time off was nice, its back to business for all us racers and enthusiast. Depsite our poor “economy” I have been pleased to hear that many of the local riders have been able to continue their winter training and take time off to head south to some warmer weather training.

If you have been living under a rock and not keeping up with the news, you have to check out what is happening in the Supercross series. I think we are still in for some surprises, but it has been a great year of racing so far. J-Law came out swinging at A1, but looks like he might be pushing a little to hard and back off his game. When Stewart went dropped out of the first race, it sure created a lot of buzz on the internet. Depsite his first round blunder, he has sure proven that he is the same old James Stewart and he can take any bike to the winners circle.

Next issue I will start my own column about health and fitness. After the injury that stopped my career, I have slowly slipped away from any kind of riding shape. With the help of Casey Bard at USP Labs and Kevin at LA Fitness of Reading, I will get back on track. What I need from our readers is tips on how you train, or your techniques. If you have any suggestions, please email me at shane@roxstarinc.com. Please include your name and sponsor list, in case I take it to print. More information to follow in the next issue.

Finally, to the point, it’s Motorama time. We all know what that means. While the weather is the typical north east winter temperatures, a weekend of Arenacross racing is exactly what we need to get our blood pumping for the 2009 season. It is also a chance to see what some of your competitors or favorite riders are going to be riding for the 2009 season. With the manufactures putting out some new bikes for ‘09, I would predict a few brand changes, even in the top ranks.

Along with myself, MRA will have several contributors covering Motorama as to not miss a moment! If you recognize me or another contributor, please come up and tell us how of an amazing job we are doing. You are also entitled to your own opinion :).

Glenn Evans #881 - Open C

The 1st Annual “Leave Arthritis in the Dust” fundraiser was held at Delmarva Motorsports Park in Seaford DE November 16th. The event was sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation of Delaware and was held to raise money and awareness for arthritis. Despite overcast skies with cool and windy conditions 97 riders registered their bikes and quads for the event. The race was run in the usual format consisting of 13 motos starting off with the 250B class and Keith Rose #86 taking both races. Zachary Grunden #415 followed his lead by taking both Quad C, Joseph Elliott #152 taking both in Quad A while Laurence Fentress #42 and Tanner Marvel #22 split the wins in Quad B.

Twenty Supermini’s hit the track with Coty Schock #119 taking the lead. Schock won both motos with Cory Callaway #06 finishing a strong second. Steven Wilson Jr. #454 took both Open A motos followed by Tyler Wozney #72. Ryan Canoe

#38 and Donovan Ivory #7 finished one, two in the 50 class and Lewis Mackay won both Open C races. Keith Rose #86 took the overall win in Open B with a first and second while Tyler Wozney #72 finished second overall with a 4th place in the first and a win in the second.

Joseph Elliott #152 dominated the field for a second time in Quad Vet with David Cyrus #0 finishing second. Reggie Powell #195 won both Junior Mini races with Shane Desell #15 finishing second. Twelve riders started in 250C with Lewis Mackay #109 winning both motos and Kobe Vanfossen #60 took both in Quad 50. Broden Carney #17 and Tyler Phinney #116 finished first and second respectively in Quad 90 and Robert Rose #87 took both in the Open Vet class.

Trophies were awarded to the top finishers in each class and raffles were held with over 15 different prizes given away, including a Honda generator, food and racing items. Everything ran smoothly and the track was in great shape despite all the previous rain. It

was an exciting day of racing with well over 150 family members and friends coming out to cheer on their favorite riders. Everyone is looking forward to the 2nd Annual “Leave Arthritis in the Dust” fundraiser to be held next year. Thanks to all the volunteers and businesses who donated time, raffle items, and food to the event. Thanks to the staff of DMP for helping to put on yet another great day of racing. Winter season usually triggers sad feelings for many in the North East, as the snow and cold weather shuts down tracks. On the other hand, it marks the start of the indoor series taking place across the country. When the Arenacross series rolls into town (or nearby), you can bet the local racing scene is on set. There is nothing better to get your blood pumping and your anxiety going for the upcoming season. While the supercross series typically steals the lime light, the arenacross series is no joke. Unlike supercross, an arenacross race is much shorter in and tighter. This combination equates to some of the best racing in the country. While the starting line up is typically diversed among the nation, local Chad Wages took the holeshot on his new Suzuki. Daniel Corbin took his chances on a brand new Kawasaki, but ran into some problems. If you missed this stop, be sure to check

History repeats itself and habits dictate action, and so it is true in most everything that we do. Mothers and Fathers teach their children what they’ve been taught. This is especially true with fathers and some mothers when it comes to our favorite habit that we call “motorcycle racing”.

We fathers can’t wait for the day that we can teach our son’s and daughters to swing a leg over their first motorcycle or atv. In my case, my son was only 4 months old when he got his first ride as I’m sure that many of you can tell similar stories.

This is the case with a couple of local ex racers that are allowing their son’s to follow in their footsteps and that is what today’s history lesson is all about.

Circa, mid 1980’s. Team Speed Boys was a national endurance road race team that had several team members from the District 6 area. They would travel the country with their Yamaha FZ 750’s and compete in 2, 4, 6, 8 and sometimes 24 hour team endurance races. The team was very successful and did quite well nationally.

Current team dad and one of the original team members and now partner at Action Motorsports is local racer and master technician John Yurejefcic. Our other team dad is Steve Heiser, a local business man and ex flat track and road racer whose brother Mark competed with the original Speed Boys team.

I remember talking to Mark several years ago and he was telling me about his young nephew Cassidy. About how Cassidy had just gotten this Honda Z50R and his dad Steve had mounted street tires on it, that one day he was going to be a road racer. At the time I thought, well that’s kinda nuts. The kid’s only 4, shouldn’t he learn to ride in the dirt first.

Well it turns out that Cassidy and his best friend Eric did learn to ride in the dirt. Both Cassidy Heiser (Steve’s son) and Eric Yurejefcic (John’s son) began flat track racing together at ages 4 and 5 respectively. That gives them each 10 years racing experience to date with Eric being a year older than Cassidy.

Both have had great successes racing the D-6 flat track scene and in 2006 the boys with the help of their dads began on their current course of road racing motorcycles as many weekends a year as they can. Hence Speed Boyz with a Z, G2 (second generation).

2006 was a starter year for both boys when they mounted up on 72cc Metrakit road race bikes. Metrakits were 72cc – 2 Stroke spec bikes meaning all bikes were set up relatively the same with only minimal changes being allowed to the bikes like tires and gearing. Both Cassidy and Eric did well that year with Cassidy finishing second in the nation and earning a trip to Spain to compete in the World Mini GP.

In 2007 both boys moved up to race in the 125cc division and unfortunately Eric started his year with an injury that kept him off the bike to mid July. It was their first

year on full blown race bikes and Cassidy clinched the 125cc National Championship in the novice division and earned enough points to start off 2008 in the expert class. Eric regrouped after his injury and raced novice class in both the 125cc and F2 classes on a Suzuki SV650.

The team came out in 2008 with the goal to get really good at what they were doing. Both boys were healthy and racing the big bikes and the team was getting their race day mechanics and strategies dialed in. To everyone’s delight, the goals had to be changed mid year. In what both dad’s anticipated being a learning year for the team, 2008 ended up being a championship year for the G2 Speed Boyz team.

For example: Eric ended up racing in 58 main events between his two classes over a 14 week time period. All toll he ended up on the podium in 42 of those races while finishing first 18 times. Not bad for a 15 year old with only a half year experience on a full size race bike.

Next up Cassidy: I’ve heard people say Cassidy is a natural. That doesn’t surprise me as both his dad and uncle have great racing accomplishments in their own rites. In 2008, Cassidy won the 125cc

GP class in three different regions of the country securing the 125cc WERA National Championship two years running.

The future you ask? Are both of these local racers going to make history? Of course only time will tell. For 2009 the team is anticipating another “learning year”. Both boys will be riding Suzuki SV650’s in endurance classes while stepping aboard Yamaha R6’s for sprint racing. That’s a full blown 600cc – 4 cylinder bike capable of reaching well over 150mph at 14 and 15 years old respectively.

Crazy you ask? No just doing it the right way I say. Move thru the ranks, gain the experience and hope to compete in 2011 in the newly structured 16-21 year old 600cc AMA Supersport division.

What a year!! The District 6 Banquet brings the 2008

season to a close, and with Motorama only a month away, the 2009 season is hot on its heals. It was a great night had by all. A huge turn out even with the ice and snow didn’t stop people from having a great time coming out and support their family, friends, and their riding buddies. Huge prizes and awards adorn the banquet hall at the Inn at Reading from one end to the other. SCOTT Goggles, MSR, Kawasaki KLX 110 pit bike and thousands of dollars more in prizes and awards were handed out to not only riders but to anyone who attended. • 18 A Look Inside Bromley’s

racing, and you think about a name you see around the race tracks across the state, there is usually one name that stands out among the others. You can often spot the Bromley’s racing logo at harescramble races, dirttrack events, and even at the motocross track. Bromley’s Motorcycle sales has been in business since the beginning of time, 1959. The founders Bob & Jean Bromley opened it’s doors at that time at its current location in Trevose, PA and hasn’t moved since. Bob started working at a Mack Transportation company and decided it would be a fun part-time deal working on and selling motorcycles. A few months went by, and he made it his full-time job and found his passion.

Bromley’s truly is a family effort. The triple threat of Joe, Bill, and Steve Bromley now run their father’s creation. Bill can be found at the parts counter most of the time, setting up customers with the right parts and accessories for their motorcycle. Steve is the master in the technical department and serves as the business’s service manager. Joe serves as the the sales manager and the president of the store. In the summertime, you can often find Joe’s two sons, Danny & Joey, also working in the store learning the roots of the business. The founder, Bob can still be found in his office from time to time going through mail and sometimes making deliveries for the business. The store holds sale to three different brands of equipment. You can find the finest line of Suzuki,

KTM, and Polaris in the building. They even hold sales to Victory motorcycles as well. The store is always stocked with a variety of quality used motorcycles and all the parts, riding gear, and helmets you need. Walking into the building, you feel a sense of “home” with the quality customer service that is brought to the table.

Racing has been a huge focus within the Bromley family. Every single member of the family has raced at one point or another. Bob & Jean started the trend back before the business was even around and turned that into

their business. Bill, Steve, and Joe have all raced themselves as well. It still isn’t a rare thing to see Steve at a local harescramble winning the Vet A class or seeing Joe racing the grand national dirttrack races in Illinois every summer. Joe is actually one of the career amateur national championship overall winners of all time. He also blessed with me with some of his Nicky Hayden TT advice over the years as well. Joe’s career is winding down and he has turned his focus to his two sons, Danny & Joey. Danny has multiple PA State Championship harescramble championships as well as multiple Amateur National

Dirttrack championships. Moving up to the 250cc motorcycles, Danny uses his smooth and consistent riding style to get to the front. Joey is also a PA State Harescramble championship in the Quad division and just recently is making the switch back to motorcycles. He even podiumed his first year back at the Amateur Nationals this past year in the 125cc division on the 1/2 mile. He is learning quick and together the boys make a dynamic duo at the racetrack. 2008 also marked an important year for Joe Bromley. He was voted in as the AMA Northeast Board of Directors Member. These

people are the ones who make most of the important decisions at the AMA, for instance the sale of AMA being sold to DMG (Daytona Motorsports Group). They couldn’t of picked a more dedicated member to the team. As for 2008, Joe has been at 63 AMA sanctioned racing events and 14 AMA meetings across the United States. Talk about dedication. PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is pleased to announce the hiring of Joe Bromley as the Director of Racing for the Association. Bromley, who was elected from the Northeast Region one year ago to the AMA Board of Directors, resigned his seat on the Board effective today, Jan. 5, to accept the position. As Director of Racing, Bromley will oversee the day-to-day operations of AMA Racing.“Racing is a large part of the AMA’s heritage, and it is a significant part of the AMA’s future,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “As the largest motorsports sanctioning body in the world, the AMA has a responsibility to maintain a world-class amateur

racing program. Joe Bromley will provide hands-on leadership and help the Association achieve that goal.”Bromley has a long history with motorcycling and the AMA. The Pennsylvanian grew up working at his family’s motorcycle dealership and won his first race at the age of six. He was president of AMA District 6 for 12 years and also served as president of the Road Winders Motorcycle Club, which was founded in 1953 and ran one of the first motocross events in the Northeast.“Leaving the Board and its responsibilities was not an easy decision to make, but I believe that the AMA is on the right track, has its priorities in order and that I have something to contribute to the day-to-day management

of the Association,” Bromley said. “I am very proud of the fact that during the course of my relatively short tenure on the Board, we have made a renewed commitment to amateur racing, which is something that is near and dear to me. The path has been set and I am excited about the opportunity to implement the strategic direction that I helped craft.”Bromley, who has been an AMA member for nearly three decades, remains an active racer and recreational road and off-road rider. He competes in both off-road and dirt track events and has won 21 amateur AMA National Dirt Track Championships in his amateur career.

When I think about my favorite riding memories over the years, I can’t help but think about Breezewood Proving Grounds MX Park. If you’ve never been there before, you’re missing out on a real treat. Nestled 20 minutes off the Breezewood Pennsylvania Turnpike exit, sits MX heaven for bike and quad riders. Breezewood Proving Grounds or BPG offers riders three MX tracks, a three-mile woods trail, fully loaded cabins available to rent, campsites, a shower house, and a clubhouse with good food. BPG is known for their fun and sometimes wacky annual events such as the Fourth of July couch pulled quad races, free style show under the lights, and fallfest mud bog races just to name a few. These events are quite popular, attracting riders from all over the east coast. Several members and their families travel well over six hours to ride at the park and who can blame them? With some of the best tracks on the east coast and one of the friendliest atmospheres you’ll find at a MX park, it’s no wonder BPG is most riders and my favorite place to ride.

I recently got a chance to chat with the owner of BPG, Dan Harris, to learn more about the man behind the operation and hear about what he has in store for 2009.

Most people think you have a dream job, but they don’t always see the countless hours or headaches that go with owning a motocross park. What has been your biggest challenge so far?

I do have a dream job. It’s awesome living motocross 24/7! Yes, there are challenges such as acquiring and maintaining the amount of equipment it takes to run three tracks and having enough water to handle dust control. The biggest challenge I’ve had to face was permitting the property for such use. It took two and half years, three engineering firms, two attorneys and a pile of money to make it through the grueling process. I never had any doubt that it would be worth every bit of it!

I bet there are some nice perks to owning your own park. What’s your favorite part about waking up to three tracks every day?

Aside from having my beautiful woman, Amanda and daughter Abbie here with me, it would have to be the idea that I can go out on the tracks with a machine and create whatever cool jump I dreamed up the night before. Then best of all, I can get on my quad and test it out and can change it if I don’t like it. Then seeing everyone come out on the weekend and ride what I just built is by far the coolest for me.

Tell me what a typical day during riding season looks like for you.

From the time we open in March until the time we close in December Amanda and I keep pretty busy, usually seven days a week. Although I’m busy, for me it’s really not work. I love to ride. It’s my hobby and my passion. So when I’m working on the tracks or doing anything at the park, I’m just enjoying my hobby. With that said, I usually spend Mondays taking care of all the paper work. Tuesdays and Wednesdays when the park is closed, I do the big track changes that take time. Thursdays I start tilling up the tracks and getting them ready for the weekend. Friday is more tilling and discing

the tracks. Then when the sun goes down I water them heavily so the water will soak in overnight. Weekends are spent grooming the tracks in the morning, watering and riding in the afternoon. I know most people think I ride every day, but most of my riding is on the weekends.

With the rising costs of just about everything, you’ve managed to keep your prices the same for 2009. Was that a tough decision for you?

Yes, it was a tough decision to keep our daily riding fees the same with all of our expenses going up. The big challenge I have is that I want to constantly improve the park. I want more land and more trails and another track, just like so many of our

riders. At the same time I understand the economy isn’t in the best shape and that it is expensive to ride. I want the Proving Grounds to be affordable to everyone and I want people to be able to come out and ride for multiple days at a time. That’s the best way to get better. And that’s why you can ride here three days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) for only $70.

Riders come from all over to ride at the park. You have members that travel well over six hours. What’s the farthest someone has traveled to ride?

It amazes me how far people are willing to drive to ride at the Proving Grounds, many of them making multiple trips a year. The farthest has been a group from Canada that came out to ride. We’ve had a family from Texas that was doing a road trip stopping at several tracks. John from Indiana has driven out for a few of our holiday events. We get several groups from New York, and New Jersey and we’ve had a couple people from Florida. We even have a member in North Carolina.

Your membership sales were up 30% from 2007 to 2008. What do you think makes your park stand out and keeps riders coming back?

I believe that our riders enjoy the atmosphere here at the park more then anything. From the time you come in the gate you can recognize that we are a family operated business that cares for what we are doing. This park isn’t just about riding. It’s about the whole riding experience. We’re nestled in the Allegheny mountains and have great campsites with amazing views of the tracks and surrounding mountains. There are plenty of trees to shade the summer sun and our dining hall not only provides great food, but it also gives people a chance to sit down and gather as friends and talk about riding. We have volleyball and horseshoes and a kids play area that all offer a family cookout oriented atmosphere. Best of all we don’t run motos on any of our three tracks. They are open to bikes and quads all day. You don’t have to sit around and wait for your turn on the tracks. You ride when you want and rest when you want. There’s no pressure to hurry up and get out there or get in as many laps as you can. All this makes for a very relaxed atmosphere that riders enjoy.

What would you say to the beginning quad or bike rider who might be intimidated coming to your MX park for the first time?

The best thing about this place is there is no pressure. Take your time and just ride and don’t push things. The tracks are beginner friendly with long landing ramps and no peaky do or die doubles. There are

option lines around all the big jumps that allow you to take an easier route. If you want to try jumping or racing MX then this is a great place to get started and build your confidence. We don’t run motos and we allow people to ride at their leisure so the tracks don’t ever seem to be crowded. With three tracks and a 3-mile woods trail there is always somewhere to ride comfortably.

I’ve heard there are some awesome plans for BPG in the works for 2009 season. Can you talk about that?

Without a doubt 2009 is going to be a big year for the park. In addition to all the great riding and camping you can do at the park, starting in 2009 we will have swimming. We have a beautiful spring fed pond that will have a sandy beach on one side and a “Travis Pastrana style” slip and slide leading into the other side. I also intend to purchase a floating trampoline to increase the swimming fun.

The big news for 2009 is the addition of our motocross “Dream Camps.” In June, July and August we will hold four day three night motocross camps at the park. Camp goers will stay right at the park in our comfortable cabins. All meals will be

provided and served in our dining hall. It’s not your typical menu either. We have a host of people coming to cook their famous meals. In addition to the trainers and staff we will have on hand every day, each camp will have a “Pro Day” where pro racers will ride with and give pro level tips to camp goers. Seminars on equipment maintenance, diet and exercise will be provided. Every aspect of motocross riding will be covered taking any rider to the next level. Dustin Wimmer the number one atva quad racer of the year will be one of the pros at all three camps. I’ll have other pros listed on our website as the final decisions are made. This is sure to be a”dream camp” for anyone interested in motocross.

As always, I’ll be changing the tracks throughout the year to keep them new and fresh to all of our regulars.

BPG is known for their fun yearly events such as the Fourth of July Couch Pulled Quad Race, Memorial Night Races, Mud Bogs, etc. What has been your most memorable event?

I would have to say our July 4th couch races. In 2007 when we ran the race up

our gravel driveway, the team of quad rider Kevin Hill and couch rider Josh Herbie, had their speedometer reading over 60mph - what a sick sight for the spectators. This past summer we moved the race to the intermediate track and made a course around most of the jumps. Everyone at the park that day stopped what they were doing to watch the madness on the track. Couch’s were falling apart, the riders were covered in mud, and the passing action was intense. It didn’t hurt that the winning team got 4 foot trophies and a free membership to the park. This year we plan to keep the race on the track, but we’re going to add a second moto.

Dustin Wimmer, John Natalie, Jason Dunkelburger, and the Can-Am Team are just some of the big names that have made visits to the park. Who is one racer you’d love to come to the park that hasn’t yet?

Yeah we’ve had several pro atv racers out to the park making for same great riding action and spectating. They’ve all been super nice guys and signed autographs and spent time talking to riders. Jason Dunkelberger and Dustin Wimmer even showed up to one of our Thanksgiving weekend rides and when they were done ripping up the tracks they had a Thanksgiving dinner in the dining hall with a packed room full of riders wanting to hang out with them.

There’s a lot of pros who haven’t been to the park who’d I’d like to come. Actually I’d like them all to come. One pro I’d like to see visit the park is Travis Pastrana. We’re both from Maryland where there are very limited riding opportunities. I’d like to show him my version of a motocross park. Of course it wouldn’t hurt if he wanted to do an episode of Nitro Circus here.

Do you have a favorite pro rider?

I hate to pick favorites. Most people know I’m a quad rider, so I tend to keep up with the pro quad racing scene more then the bikes. Of course our 2008 Champ Dustin Wimmer is one of my favorites along with Jason Dunkelberger who I think is a great guy, very fast and hard working. There’s Doug Gust who everyone has to respect, and John Natalie who’s style I can appreciate. I think you could put him on a 300ex and he’d give it everything he had to try and win the race.

It’s no secret that you’re a big Honda fan. Tell us about your sweet quad.

Yeah I’ve been on Honda’s for a long time. My current quad is an 05 450 R Kick start. Thanks to Pappy and Kevin Hill at BK Performance it’s totally decked out. Pappy powder coated everything and Kevin stripped it down and installed all the aftermarket parts. It runs great and is incredibly reliable. I’ve been running the #584 since I was a kid racing BMX bicycles.

How long have you been riding? I hate to say but you’d think after riding

so long I’d be much better. I know kids that have only been riding two or three years that can chase me around the park! The truth is, I’ve been riding around 15 years. I got started with a new 1994 Yamaha Banshee and road at Tower City for several years.

You did quite well with racing back in the day. Tell me a little about your racing career.

I started out racing hare scrambles back in 1999 on a 300ex. I did really well and in 2000 I won the District 7 B Class. The following year I moved up to the A class in the hare scrambles and also decided to follow the District 7 Motocross series. 2001 turned out to be an incredible year of racing for me. Not only did I follow the D7 MX and HS series, but I also ran 11 of the 13 National GNCC’s and in all events I raced the Quad A Class. In the MX series, I won the championship, took second in

the Harescramble Series and 6th in the Nationals.

That winter I purchased the property that is now the Breezewood Proving Grounds and haven’t really made it to many races since.

Would you like to ever get back into the racing scene?

Although I enjoyed the time that I raced, I always preferred just going out and riding with no pressures, no waiting, just riding. I would like to have a few district races here at the Proving Grounds someday but I’m not sure that I’d be racing.

The park closes for the winter months. What do you do for fun in the winter?

We try to take it easy in the winter and rest up for the coming spring. A vacation somewhere warm is usually part of the resting. Last year we went to the Bahamas and this year we are taking Abbie to Disney World. Actually my mother is taking the whole family down. It’s going to be a big event and we’re all really excited about it. I

always try and plan a riding trip somewhere, too. Last year we went North to NEMX indoors. What a great place, I recommend it to everyone. A trip to North Carolina is always nice, too. We ride at NCMP with Jon Kelly. We also like to snow ski and roller skate. This will be Abbie’s first year on skis and I’m going to try snow boarding this year.

What’s one thing most people would be surprised to learn about you?

I’m a pretty open book. There’s not too much people don’t know about me.

What are your 10 year goals for the park?

My ten year goals for the park really depend on the state of the economy over that period. If we have a strong economy and people continue to come out and support the park, I hope to purchase more land and open up for trail riding, possibly one day having a GNCC event. Right now we have a small 3 mile trail but it would really increase our market group allowing 4 x 4 ‘s and sport quads more riding opportunities. In ten years I expect the park to be running very smoothly, with more employees and equipment and a sprinkler system. I expect camping and multiple day riding to be very big here with the addition of swimming and the addition of full hook up sites. I also have a new changing room, shower house and bathrooms planned for the upper parking area. I expect our 4-day dream camps to be huge with riders coming from all over the country to ride with the pros at Breezewood.

Led by patriarch John Henderson’s win in the 125 final, two other member’s of Team Henderson took wins at the middle race of the 34th Annual Baltimore County Trail Riders/Cockeysville Optimist Club sponsored Rodney Farris Memorial Short Tack Series. Nick Henderson repeated his win of the night before in the Adult 100 final and Chris Klinefelter used Nick’s machine to claim the 450 final.

John took the lead off two from Joe Dragunas, Samantha Bergman, Kevin Bills and Joey Alexander. Henderson pulled away for a fairly easy win, while Bergman took second on the sixth lap.

Nick had a lucky start in the Adult 100. A rider had jumped the start and officials were reaching for the red flag when he got involved in a three rider melee off two. Since the race was deemed stopped, the downed riders were not penalized. Off the restart, Henderson pulled clear of Mike Poe, Brian Phillips,

Jason Isennock and Joey Parks. Henderson pulled out to a half lap margin, while Parks and Isennock collided on the eighth lap, dropping back.

Klinefelter took the lead from Rich Heverly, Roy Miller and Dalton Winkler from the start and the order remained the same to the end.

The 250 final was very unusual for here. Normally passing on this tight, seven second oval is by error or nudging through. This had passing for the lead, with no crashing involved!! Dalton Winkler took the lead from Travis Diem, Rich Mellinger, Miller and Dillon Cava. Mellinger got by Diem on the fifth lap, with Miller following the next lap. On the eight lap, both Mellinger and Miller got past Winkler. Two laps later, Cava got by Winkler, making the top three all 30 + class members. Over the final laps, Mellinger and Miller ran nose to tail with neither making a mistake.

The master of small tracks,

Donnie Mullen, again monopolized all events he entered, setting fast time of the night, and breezing through his qualifiers. He won the Dash for Cash on a 250 that Cava qualified since both he and Cava used the same machine to set their class fast time. Off the line, Mullen took the lead from Paul Allison, Isennock and Cory Texter and pulled out to a half lap margin while the others battled nose to tail over second.

After easily winning his heat and semi, Dustin Healey grabbed the 65 lead and looked like a winner until he fell in the first turn. This gave the lead to Devin Owens, Brandon Price and Cameron Smith. Healey remounted just in front of Owens, who fell on the fifth lap giving Price the lead. Healey sliced his way back up through the field getting by Smith for third on the final lap.

Repeat winners were Shawn Rothstein II holding off Chase Smith again in the 50 (7-8) final, while Joey Alexander easily won the 85 again. Matt Langrehr got under Dylan Almony in lapped traffic about two laps from the end.

Lapped riders figured into the other Youth 50 finals. Dillon curry looked like he was going to repeat his 50 (4-6) win of the night before despite pressure from Ramzee Hawk. On the final lap, he tapped a lapper, falling hard in the first turn. Chris Thomas also looked to repeat in the 50 Shaft with close pressure from Tucker Hake. But on the final lap, Thomas took the wrong line entering turn three, letting Hake into the lead. Mike Cortese Jr. held off Joe Gathercole’s pressure for the 50 Adult win.

Donnie Mullen completed his third straight complete sweep of the Pro class at the final Baltimore County Trail Riders/Cockeysville Optimist Club sponsored Rodney Farris Memorial Indoor Short Track series, setting fast time, heat and semi. He then took his third dash for cash for the fastest qualifier in each class, plus the next fastest qualifier. To add a little variety, he used Jake Shoemaker’s 50 to easily win the Adult 50 class. As usual, he held a length lead out of two and increased it to over half a lap, letting Cory Texter, Jason Isennock and Tom Majeski to closely battle for second that surprising stayed in the same order to the finish.

After improving his finishes by one in the previous two races, Roy Miller completed the cycle winning the 250 final. Miller took the lead from Nick Guiseppe, Jake Shoemaker and Rich Mellinger. After a few laps, Shoemaker nudged his way past Guiseppe for second. Shoemaker then stayed close to Miller to the end. Chris Klinefelter repeated as 450

winner, this time over Travis Diem and Corey Hormes. Shoemaker and Miller followed. Miller nudged his way into fourth on the tenth lap, with Shoemaker returning the favor a few laps later, letting Jimmy Owens past for fourth.

John Henderson also repeated his 125 class win with Jeremiah Snow, Kevin Bills and Joey Alexander following. Bills slipped into second at the start of the third lap and stayed close till the end.

Alexander completed his sweep of the 85 class, this time with Matt Langrehr, Colton Smith and Matt Trout behind. Langrehr and Smith crashed out of the race on the second lap, with Ryan Varnes and Dylan Almony moving up to second and third that they held to the end.

Again Dustin Healey easily breezed through the 65 class, but this time he made it out of the second turn and pulled away from Brandon Price and Cameron Smith for the win.

The Women’s class had Erin Kissinger taking the lead from Samantha Resch and Becca Zafia. The front three stayed the same as they circled the track nose to tail.

Joey Parks took the Adult 100 class, leading Nick Henderson, Isennock and Joe Dragunas. Henderson fell out of two, but rejoined, only to collide with Paul Shoemaker later in the race.

The Youth 50 classes had Ramzee Hawk again winning the 4-6 group, Chase Smith in the 7-8 and Tucker Hake winning the Shaft. Matt Langrehr won the Youth 100 while Jeremiah Snow slipped by Cody Bauer for second on the eighth lap.

If you read the article I included in last month’s issue, you’ll know I included ten

tips to keep yourself busy with activities that are ‘moto oriented’. To be honest, I’m picking my way through that list rather quickly. As I write this article, I am sitting in the ‘co-pilot seat’ (aka the passenger seat) on my way to GPF (Georgia Practice Facility). Down there I will be doing both riding and training. Recent events in my racing career have lit a new fire that I am carrying with me to Georgia. Those racing events occurred at this year’s annual Winter Amateur National Olympics in Gainesville, Florida.

This being my first amateur national, I would have to say it was…. A major learning Experience. Going down there, I knew I would have stiff competition. I was on the gate bar to bar with pro women riders! I had made simple goals. I wanted to ride at the best of my ability and to get the feel for this new ‘amateur national world’ that I was completely blind to. Let alone the fact that I was nervous out of my mind (and stomach); I was at this big race out of my norms! Both my parents are always at the races with me. Unfortunately this time they couldn’t make it. Though they couldn’t be by my side, thanks to the handy transponders, they were able to watch my motos a thousand miles away online!

Now, for the racing program itself, we (to the family was gracious enough to take me in for the week,) pulled into Gatorback Cycle Park late Saturday night. Sunday was a day to get everything set up and ready for the exciting week ahead. We walked the supercross track, got registered, and readied our bikes for Monday’s practice. A unique thing about the Mini O’s is that racing is done not only on a motocross track, but also on a supercross track (though the motocross is very much more preferred by the riders). Supercross is raced at the beginning half of the week, immediately following is the motocross. Anyways, Monday was supercross practice, and as it always is a weakness of mine. Upon the finish of practice were the first few qualifying races. I ran my women’s and 250C qualifiers Monday. At the Mini O’s, the program runs continuously until 5:00ish. Tuesday completed the qualifying races, and began the, last chance qualifying races. Thankfully enough, I only had to run one (250C) LCQ, I had made it in the qualifying motos of Women and Open C. Wednesday morning began the supercross main events.I had fun racing super cross, but know that I am stronger on the motocross track. On Wednesday, after the supercross was over, the motocross practice began. I got in two of three of my practice sessions. This track had a very gorgeous layout, being that it was built surrounding a quarry! Thursday began with the last few practices, and beginning of motos. Like supercross, the motocross had qualifiers and LCQ races for the main, which took place Friday. Just as I qualified in both the Open C and Women classes in supercross, I did the same for motocross. Saturday concluded the motocross finals. As you can see this was a very busy schedule. Our pit was very busy with a total of eight classes between the three of us riders (Willy, Garret, and myself). I had an enjoyable experience at the Mini O’s, though I did not ride to the best of my potential, I am now aware at the intensity and speed required

to compete at the national level.

As I was thrown into this new world of racing, and it brought me to a conclusion I would like to share with you. I am not downing the sport in any way. Our sport is divided, and I cannot begin to explain how very distinct the divide is. Though this division is not a negative thing, one cannot relate unless they have been on both sides of the spectrum. What is at either end of this divide is local races and national races. Only recently was I introduced to racing motocross at the national level myself, and now that I have seen either end I would like to share the array of differences. These following differences make the experiences to be like night and day. Each and every individual at national races is there performing at their very best and pushing their limits 100% both during the races, and throughout the week to prepare themselves. Attendance is in the thousands at national races, while back home the local races range in the hundreds. As20one may go20to a national race with expectations of doing well because they are a decent local rider, they will have a rude awakening. Every rider at these ‘bigger races’ is the fast local rider. All the factories and support teams are set up at these nationals to support and provide parts and assistance to the racers, which is a very big help. Speaking of help, from 50 to vet riders I cannot explain to you how many racers at national races have their own personal mechanics!

As this atmosphere is very hyped up, nothing feels like home more than the local races, which I still cherish the feeling of being at, but my experience in this ‘new world’ was priceless. I have learned a lot and have new goals based upon the requirements needed to compete at the level I have been introduced to at the amateur nationals. Upon finishing this article, I am now at GPF, and ready to go to bed and wake up tomorrow to work toward those goals.

Happy New Year everyone, Hope Santa brought everyone what they wanted this year. I was a pretty good kid this year for the most part, I’d say. The holiday break went way to

slow for me. I don’t like sitting around doing nothing for more than one day. Our gym was closed for the holidays so I spent some time at my mom’s house with my family and did some training up there and relaxed for a couple days before we starting going full throttle after New Year’s. I got to do some riding here and there even with the cold weather among us, so that was good. There isn’t a whole heck of a lot I can update you on, but I’ll do my best not to bore you!

The AMA finally released our 2009 rules and 2009 Grand National schedule for this season. The rules can be found on amaflattrack.com & the schedule can be found on my website,

CoryTexter.com. I also have a limited list of district 6 races that I might be able to attend this year. I will not be able to attend all of the ones I listed, but there is a possibility. There is also a lot more district 6 races then I have on my website. For a full list, you can contact Dolly Varnes or call the AMA to find this information out.

We have been very busy the last week or so building our 2009 race machines. I won’t say what we will have in our stable just quite yet, but since I started racing in 2003, I haven’t been this confident with the races bike I will be on to date. We picked up a really good sponsor and I am extra excited to get the season started.

Besides riding when I can and working on race bikes, I have been going to the gym 5-6 days a week now. My trainer, Brian Beddow has me on an excellent program. Since we have started working together at the end of last year, I feel a huge difference already in strength and cardio. I have always had goals for racing, but now we have goals in the weight room also. It gives me the extra strength and stamina to ride these 750’s and also gives me added confidence knowing I am ready to compete. I want to be in better

shape than my competitors so I can go 25+ plus laps and not skip a beat. Thanks again to Brian for all his dedication in kicking me into shape & also to Cytosport for supplying me with all the products I need for my training purposes. They have been awesome as well.

Also want to say big congratulations to one of my sponsors and good friends, Joe Bromley for being chosen as the new “AMA Director of Racing”. This is a very high ranking job. Joe Bromley has definitely earned it though. From all the hard work on the AMA Board this year to his long hours at Bromley’s Motorcycle Sales, Joe is very involved in racing. Hopefully he doesn’t forget about me now that he is famous. Just a little joke there. You’ll have to ask him about the time he told Nicky Hayden to use a front brake when Nicky was a kid. Yes, Joe has been around for that long, but he still rips on a motorcycle and has like 21 amateur national championships. They picked the right guy for the job. Congrats Joe!

An industry leading in the sport and utility ATV market, Yamaha has taken their drive for top quality and performance to change the consumer generator market for years to come. While the EF1000iS model is the lowest on the food chain, it has proven true to the core values Yamaha has built their name on. With a laundry list of selling points and competitive price, we were anxious to put the model to the test and give our readers the scoop. The generator was first tested for run time, testing the stated 8 hour continuous run time specified. Next it was strapped to a utility ATV rack and driven out of cell phone service to a camp site, where it powered lights, a radio, and helped start a dead ATV battery. The fuel petcock became very handy on the trail to keep the model from being flooded and unable to start when reaching the camp site.

Honest Opinion Pros: Ease of Use – The Yamaha control panel was very straightforward and required no reading to get the unit running and operate throughout our test.Lightweight – The generator was light enough to pick up with one hand and toss right in the back of the truck. It was light enough to strap to the rack of our utility

ATV and travel to a campsite, allowing us to bring a little more civilization to camping 5 miles deep into the wilderness. Heavy Duty Cover – The casing stood up to the test of travel as it took a few bangs that surely brought that “opps…” face about. DC Output – Instead of going through all the trouble of hooking up a battery tender, a quick plug in of the included cables and we were able to jumpstart a dead battery and get back on the trail. Sound – Having owned large generators in the past, the quiet purr was a relief when a conversation could easily be held over the sound. The economy setting was even more impressive decreasing the sound more than half of the decibels. While the power was dropped, it was useful when powering a single light or radio at the campsite. Run Time – Tested on two occasions, the generator ran for approximately seven and a half hours, a half hour short of the specified time. Assuming that we were merely testing a different voltage output than the one tested by Yamaha, this is an impressive feat for 2/3 of a gallon of fuel. The economy switch would have nearly doubled out time, but we were more interested in testing a heavier abuse to the machine.

Cons: Cover – The molded cover withstood several bumps, but seemed more acceptable to scratches. Whether it was the nature of our test, our unit acquired a handful of small battle wounds. Light Weight – The light weight is an absolute selling point to this model, however when starting,

one must apply pressure to the handle to keep the machine from falling over on the side. Not that big of an issue, as it typically fired up on three pulls or less. All in all, there is no doubt I would purchase one of these machines for myself and recommend the same to a friend. Yamaha sure did their research on this model, as my listed cons barley merit a complaint. The scratches are

easily avoided with the purchase of Yamaha’s fitted cover for the machine, and if kept on during nonuse, scratches and signs of use would be kept very minimal. This generator would be idea for camping or small jobs around the house. While it may fall short of powering an RV on site, Yamaha has you covered with several other models available.

In my 16 years as a Motocrosser I have always loved that it is an individual sport. Most of the blame and credit goes on the rider. Not to take credit away from the sponsors/mechanics usually known as Mom and Dad. As a racer I learned that it was vitally important that I saw myself as a winner, and that I believed that I had what it took to win. Imagine that you are on the gate with the # 1 board up and your heart is pounding you think to yourself I am going to get stomped they’re all faster than me. It is that kind of mind set that would set you up for losing and possibly injuries.

Some of you see yourself as a winner on the track, but what about in everyday life how do you see yourself? As a winner or a loser. How about the Lord Jesus Christ and your heavenly Father how do they see you? As a loser or a winner? We often view our worth based on what other people say about us. But I am proposing that we should view our worth based on what our Heavenly Father says and thinks about us.

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how

well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed (Psalm 139:13-16).

You see when our creator made us he did not make a mistake, He has a plan for you and cares for you very much. Many of us might say that’s all well and good but, I have done a lot wrong in my life. Friend God’s Word, the Bible, tell us that he will forgive us if we will confess. 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” It’s our job to be honest and up front with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His job is to forgive; which He has already promised, “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us (Psalms 103:12). Transgressions are sins or wrong things we have done. Our Father sees us like you might see James Stewarts 2008 race season as flawless. If we confess then He sees us clean and pure before Him. Our life may not always look like Stewarts race season but know that your creator loves you very much and wants a personal relationship with you. He has made that

possible through Jesus Christ. Put you life into the hands of Jesus today and begin that life of purpose and that relationship of unconditional love.

Hello all, it is great to be writing the

monthly column Dirt Talk again. After a year off from contributing to MRA, I look forward to writing for you and our new owners at Eagle Publishing. The format of the column will remain as it has in the past; it is an open forum for the readers. But for those of you who have not read my previous columns, it works like this. I will write a story on some aspect related to our sport. These stories always conclude with open ended questions relating to the topic. This is where you have the opportunity to submit your response. The goal here is to share your opinions or suggestions on the subject with other riders. You can also

contribute new points on the topic that were overlooked. Whatever the topic is, there will always be something left for you to add. Once I receive your feedback, I will publish all the responses in the next issue of MRA, at the end of the new column. That is all there is to it! You share your insights with the community and you get your name credited in the paper. But, you ask, what if you really want to say something you feel is important to add, but do not necessarily want the suggestion associated with you? For instance, what if you found that putting toothpaste on calluses 30 minutes before a race keeps them from becoming blisters. You would swear by it and

you really want to share it, but you don’t want your name credited to it, in fear that everyone will be calling you Aquafresh from now on. Well all you need to do is let me know that your feedback should remain anonymous and it will. This example is obviously made up (I hope), but you get the point. If you feel something should be shared, then send it in. This year I have some interesting topics to bring up and I am sure you will find the need to add your personal comments. Additionally, if you are curious to hear opinions on a new sport related topic, send that idea in too. I am always looking for topics to write about and throw out there for everyone to read. The bottom

line is that this column is your forum to which you can contribute your ideas and opinions for everyone to share.

What got you started in the Motocross industry?

Just fell in love with it when I was riding with friends at Rausch Creek. But when I started racing and hooked up with Lost Creek Cycles and Shane Hartman, I knew the sky was the limit.

Why choose the motocross industry over others to focus on?

It’s the passion I have for it.

Why work with Motorcycle Racing Action (MRA)?

I want to see this sport grow and the best way to do it is by promoting the local tracks and the young talent coming up threw the ranks.

Where do you see our local racing scene in 5 years?

With the economy it’s tough to say, but with the people that we have in our district, it can only get stronger.

How did you get started doing photography?

When I look at pictures me of 30yrs from now. I want to look back be proud of what I did. I want someone to think the same way when they look at pictures I took of them. So when my friend Shane Hartman gave an opportunity to help in launching RoxstarImages, there was no way I could pass it up.

What is your most memorable moment as a photographer?

‘08 Matt Bartosek race @ Maple Shade. Dustin Wimmer and Chad Weinen were nose-to-tail the whole day. Best race I EVER saw!!!

What are your future plans for your photography?

To expand my knowledge as a photog. Keep writing for MRA and help the local racing scene as much as I can.

From a photographers point of view, what improvements would you suggest to the local racing scene?

I think Patti Toth and the rest of the board are on the right track. Making sure the competition is strong and everyone has a class for them.

Do you enjoy being behind the camera, or would you rather be back on the track?

Tough question...Both are a passion of mine.I think the racing career is over. But there is no way you could ever stop me from riding.

• 34 Getting to know Brandon Robinson

Interviewed by: Cory Texter

AMA Dirttrack has always been a strong point in District 6. As a fellow dirttracker myself, it made me proud knowing some of the nation’s best like Kevin Varnes, Jake Johnson, Georgie Price, Rodney Farris, and many other greats came from right here in District 6. We have many more up and coming stars looking to keep the northeast region at the top of the sport and today I talked with Brandon Robinson. Brandon has accomplished so much in his career so far. With multiple amateur national championships, various special awards, and now the AMA Expert Twins Championship under his belt, he looks to more coming in 2009. Not only is he a super fast and smooth rider, he also most likely happens to be my future brother-in-law. Let’s see what Mr. Robinson had to say.

CT65: Tonight, I am sitting here with fellow motorcycle racer and a competitor of mine, Brandon Robinson. Brandon, let’s talk racing. You had a successful season in 2008. You earned your national number and won the AMA Expert Twins Championship. Are you satisfied with your year?

BR44: It was definitely a great year. All goals were accomplished.

CT65: I’d say it was a good year for you. Do you consider 2008 a learning year or would you say 2009 is going to be more of a learning year for you? You’re moving up to the GNC ranks for 2009. What can you expect for next season?

BR44: 2008 was a great learning year for getting use

to the 750, but next year will be an all around learning year with being able to ride with the best of the best in the world and chasing down the rookie of the year award against my fellow pa competitor Cory Texter.

CT65: Ah yes. You really adapted to the big motor well from what I saw in 2008. Rookie of the year would be the next big step from you next season. You mentioned some Cory kid running for it next year as well, but who else competition wise will be up for the award next season?

BR44: I’d also say the Australian Mick Kirkness has been riding really well this year, so he will be pretty tough as well. There are going to be a lot of fast riders going for it next year and it would be cool to bring it back to District 6 again.

CT65: Yes, Mick was a strong rider this season, I agree. What racetrack would you say was your favorite last season on both the 750 and the 450 motorcycle?

BR44: On the 750 I would have to say Bedford was my favorite track. It was sort of technical and super tacky. On the 450 it was for sure Daytona. I love rough cushion short tracks and plus it’s where I made my first national.

CT65: No surprise for me on that one. What would you say you need to work on most for next season entering the GNC ranks? Certain types of tracks? Holeshots? What is Brandon Robinson’s biggest concern for next season?

BR44: Next year I would say I really need to work on my

TT skills. It’s where I have struggled over the past few years. Also getting good consistent starts will be the most important thing I have to work on. Other than that I feel pretty confident I just have to work hard and stay concentrated on the job at hand. My biggest concern would be having a bad season next year after having such a successful one this year.

CT65: Well, chin up Mr. Robinson. You’re a very fast, young motorcycle racer. We got to wrap things up here. I got to watch the Phillies bring home the World Series. Last lap at Springfield Mile. Your in third behind Shayna Texter and Chris Carr. Who are you drafting off turn four and why?

BR44: I’d have to say Chris because my tall lanky body will be too big to tuck in behind Shayna. I’ll be getting all the wind and no draft. (Laughs)

CT65: Well Mr. Robinson or should I say newly national number 44. Thank you for representing district six proud on the national level.

Supplemental Rules and Classes Announced for the 2009 Air Nautiques/AMA Amateur National Championships at Loretta Lynn Ranch

Morgantown, WV-- MX Sports, producer of the Air Nautiques/AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, has announced the Class Structure and Supplemental Rules for the 2009 National Championship event.

Highlights of the new class structure include the return of the Master’s (50+) class for 2009. The class will run alongside the Senior (45+) class with a staggered start. In order to fit both classes, the Senior (45+) class will be restricted to 30 riders at the National, and the Masters (50+) will be held to 20 riders.

“We added the Master’s class after much discussion with that demographic, as well as analyzing the historical data in the Senior class over the last several seasons,” said Director of MX Sports Tim Cotter. “We would like to welcome the Master’s riders back into the program.”

Another change comes in the age and displacement requirements in Class 32, Girls. The class changes from Girls 65-105 (9-13) into Girls 85-105 (11-15). The Women’s class also sees an age change, from Women’s (12+) to Women’s (14+).

“That change came after much discussion with class constituents, OEMs, and analyzing the data,” said Cotter. “Any changes to our class structure or supplemental rules comes only after several months of careful research and analysis, all based around the foundation of this event, which is to create a fair, fun and safe National Championship chase for everyone involved.”

SUZUKI CONTIGENCY

BREA, Calif. – Continuing its long tradition of supporting amateur and professional racers, American Suzuki Motor Corporation (ASMC) launched its 2009 Motocross Contingency program. At racing events nationwide, Suzuki riders can earn money when they race an RM or RM-Z motocross bike to a top finish.

“American Suzuki has been a leading supporter of amateur and professional racing nationwide, on both street and MX motorcycles,” said Pat Alexander, Sports Promotions Manager for American Suzuki. “Through our continued financial support of amateur racing, we hope to maintain the growth of amateur racing, and to develop future Suzuki champions like Ricky Carmichael and Chad Reed.”

American Suzuki has fostered motocross racing locally and regionally for more than 20 years through its contingency program. With financial support for top finishers in events from Maine to California, the Suzuki Contingency program can benefit Suzuki racers nationwide. New for 2009, Suzuki racers can be paid for strong finishes in two classes per registered motorcycle.

Money is allocated to racers via the Suzuki Value-Added Contingency Cards. Contingency earnings are added to a racer’s card throughout the year of competition. Amateur and professional riders can spend their money anywhere Visa ® is accepted; professional racers can make cash withdrawals at the nearest ATM.

Anyone who buys a 2008 or 2009 Suzuki RM85 or 85L, RM250, RM-Z250 or RM-Z450 is eligible to earn contingency money through the Suzuki program. Riders can find complete details of the Suzuki MX Contingency program on the Team Suzuki website at www.teamsuzuki.com.
